40 After a long Hiatus - the Saga:

When we last left everyone Caitlin was dressed as Miss Lindsey at the McCain funeral, he punishment for dropping Joe "creepy hands" Biden. Brad was training for his new job, sticking pins into a Trump voodoo doll, Fu Manchu was addressing a diner:

"You been here long enough drinking tea! You go now!"
"My Indian stunt didn't work," Lizzy Warren complains, "I have to get some minority cred or I'm toast in this party!"
"You go to Curry Palace, bother them! Maybe they make you other Indian-American!"

And Trump is riding Bigly the Elephant, off on a quest to find "that little furry guy" to recruit him for his team. Crossing the continent he comes upon a man on a bear.

"Donald."
"Vlad."

Government goes on despite Trump's absence, the Court hearing cases like always. Mostly always.

"Oyez, oyez, the Court is now in session. All those with business before this Court step forward. God save the United States and this Honorable Court. Remain standing for the morning dance."
The sounds of "Louie, Louie" start playing as the justices dance and drink from Kavanaugh's pony keg.

Elsewhere, a caravan of migrants heads towards Mexico, destination the USA.

"Stay together, everyone! This caravan's safety depends on us remaining together," the leader says.
"Why are we on camels," one of the migrants asks.
"Idiot! This is a caravan, all caravans are made of camels!"
"Wish it was a Dodge Caravan," the migrant mutters.
"What was that?"
"Nothing."
Suddenly a Mexican police van pulls up and starts to bounce on its shocks, Mexican police officers pouring out.
"Halt this caravan! You cannot go to Gringo Land through Mexico!"
"But we must or we will not get paid by that Chinese fellow! And where are your badges?"
"We don't need no stinkin' badges, but we want you! Grab him! We will take him to the Tijuana Jail!"
The caravan leader is seized and pushed into the van, the siren blaring "La Cucaracha" as it roars away.
The migrants look at each other until one says "You want to stop here, maybe see if we can get a Dodge Caravan?"

Back in Washington the Golden Scalp Weasel lounges in the sunlight on the Resolute Desk, napping away.........

43 This looks like there was a body model and the head was added later. Or that is not the original face.

Back in ancient Rome, sculptors used to have "body shops" where a customer would search premade bodies, looking for a specific pose, style, or feature. Then the sculptor would carve your (or someone else's) head and put it on the shoulders completing the work. I'd never heard of it outside Rome, or even outside the Classical era, but that's what this reminds me of.

44 That painting looks like it should be called "Photoshop - the Early Years."

Posted by: Mikey NTH - The Outrage Outlet presents Last of the Fauxhicans starring Lizzie Warren at October 19, 2018 09:53 AM (hLRSq)

45 Back in the day, traveling artists would paint unfinished portraits - i.e., the backgrounds and the bodies but not the heads or faces.

They would set off with their unfinished portraits and sell them/finish them once they found a buyer. The time spent finishing the portraits was a lot less than they would otherwise spend doing an entire portrait from scratch.

It would appear that this portrait started out as a portrait of a small girl, then became a portrait of an adult along the way.

Sad!

72 Looks like a perfectly normal young lady to me. The artist just emphasized the shadows a bit more he should have - when drawing young women it is better to underemphasize certain details of shade and line, otherwise they tend to look too old or too masculine.

Without looking it up, I am going to guess that this is late 18th or early 19th century American Primitive.

121 a note about Beto and Gun Control that came up in the last thread: J.J. was right, it's about positioning after the election is over, and it's also because Beto's people really have studied the trajectory of Wendy Davis, and have learned from it.

One of the biggest long term mistakes Wendy made was that she actually believed her own hype, and thought she had a chance to win, and saw that her gun control stance was hurting her with a lot of Texans. So, two weeks before the election she made this big statement that she was all for Gun Rights and posed with a shotgun. Of course no one on the right believed her, and it pissed off a bunch of her leftist followers, so that move put the final nail in her electoral coffin.

BUT what was worse for her was that after the election, liberals around the country denounced her for "betraying the cause", and even though she wrote a full public apology in which she said that she knew she was lying, she has never been able to get a media job anywhere - and don't know what she's doing now, but she toils away in obscurity somewhere, probably gaining weight in a house full of cats.

That's the fate Beto is determined to avoid. He's going to take his ship down with every Progressive Flag proudly flying. And he's going to continue to be a darling of the prog's because of it.

123 I'd be kind of curious to know how many people criticizing this girl's face have ever tried to draw a portrait of a pretty girl, and learned something of the pitfalls of doing so....

The problem isn't the girl's face, it is that the artist screwed up the overall effect by painting in too much shadow with too heavy a hand, I think. Overall I think it a pretty decent effort by someone who was probably largely self-taught, but still shows a bit of amateurism. But then, I like American Primitive and folk art.

204 I live in WA state. No income tax here either.

Seattle imposed a local income tax but miraculously a judge struck it down since the state constitution strictly forbids a city from doing that.

There was a ballot measure in 2010 to impose an income tax, funded by Bill Gates. It went down 65-35. Were it to be up for a vote today, I think it would pass.

WA Was always leftie, but in the past decade it has gone full bore communist. There are few safe places left. Even across the border in Idaho things are slowly getting worse as the locusts from Cali invade.

274 In all seriousness, I suspect that the model for this painting was a fairly normal, pretty-but-not-stunningly-beautiful young woman, and probably looked better in person than most of the used-up whores that kdabear puts up for y'all to drool over. Kind of aggravating to see her derided like this.

The artist had a lot of limitations, but given the environment he learned and worked in, it isn't too bad. This was probably the most realistic and lifelike image to be found at that place and at that time - we today live in a culture that is saturated with cheap and readily reproduced visual images, so we interpret lines and color much differently than did our forefathers.

As most people are aware, I have a great love affair with the Kentucky rifle, and I've spent a lot of time in consequence thinking about the differences between the way our modern minds interpret visual images versus how folks in the 18th century saw such things. A lot of modern attempts to duplicate everything from rifle stocks to powderhorn engraving tend to be "off" in way that is hard to define, and I've come to the conclusion that a lot of that is that the modern visual culture causes our minds to interpret what we see differently their do - folk art is definitely feel from from poorly done modern attempts.

I'm predicting a version of 1964.

Republicans knew they weren't going to win, so the Rockefeller Republicans didn't fight as hard against Goldwater as they could. Goldwater got the nomination, lost bigly, and got painted as an electoral loser for generation.

The less insane wing of the Democratic Party will see that they have no shot of winning the nomination, or the general election, so they'll largely sit out 2020, wait for the electoral bloodbath, and claim victory within the party afterwards.

Exactly. Interestingly, once you have learned the basics of drawing, it is really hard to switch them off again, which makes it hard to get that untutored spontaneous look even when trying for it.

I've also noticed a similar phenomenon in rifle architecture - antique rifles stocked up in a rough and ready manner tend ugly, but have quite different mistakes than those stocked up by modern unskilled hands. The older generation was used to working wood in 3d shapes out of trees and were working solely from the memory of guns they had held in their hands, whereas we look at pictures of guns all the time and are used to working from pre-planed squared lumber.

413 The older generation was used to working wood in 3d shapes out of trees and were working solely from the memory of guns they had held in their hands, whereas we look at pictures of guns all the time and are used to working from pre-planed squared lumber.

You just hit an associative thinking button. It's about pre-planed lumber.

There's a thing called an Adirondack guide boat which can't be built from pre-squared lumber. It requires the crooks of spruce trees, the natural curve where the tree goes into the root, to make the stems and ribs.

416 371 Yes: it is untutored. There is often a tremendous amount of native talent in folk art, but there are conventions of drawing that allow people to capture what the eye sees more readily, and it is hard to simply invent them on your own. "

We have some prints and other items decorated by Clementine Hunter, the well known primitive artist from Melrose Plantation, Louisiana. VERY primitive, almost child like, but the scenes depicted and the colors used grab you and are very compelling. "Baptism" is one you can search for that we have a print of, and it uses an older style of "narrative painting" that shows up in folk art, in which the painting isn't of a single scene as though you were looking at it in real time, but instead contains several scenes from a narrative storyline. So it's a visual story, not a photograph.

Dont get me wrong ID isn't Cali, yet.

It's just not what it was 10 or 20 years ago. For example it was one of the last holdouts to expand Medicaid. It is on the ballot this year and will easily pass. Also a few years ago the legislature cut spending on schools, shocking as that was. The Dems got those cuts overturned by putting them on a ballot as well. For the children donchtha know?

Plus despite being a "conservative" state the taxes are quite high.

Camera Lucindas were quite the rage at this time but required the artist to define his full proportions first before moving in to define things like eyes, mouth, nose, etc. The detail of the flowers suggests he did it correctly while the face seems disproportionate to the rest of the figure.

479 We have some prints and other items decorated by Clementine Hunter, the well known primitive artist from Melrose Plantation, Louisiana.
Posted by: Tom Servo at October 19, 2018 11:02 AM (Kpl3J)

As long as it has trees in it, it's art. Goes for folk art too. I wish CBD would remember this. It would make the art thread so much more classy.
