Gun Thread: Commie Bastards! [Weasel]

Last week we spent some time discussing the AR-15, and it's a topic and a subject I suspect we'll see again over time as I begin to run out of other ideas. This week, however, I think it only fair to give the commies a nod and take a quick look at their masterpiece of reliability, functionality, and the favorite of rogue guerilla movements everywhere.

Avtomat Kalashnikova
Mikhail Timofeyevich Kalashnikov is to the Rooskies what John Garand or Eugene Stoner is to us non-Commies. Born in 1919 as the seventeenth of nineteen children (with eight surviving to adulthood), he was conscripted into the Red Army in 1938, eventually rising to the rank of Lieutenant General. To say he was a prolific designer is an understatement, and his life - from humble beginnings as a peasant to Hero of the Fatherland - was remarkable. Probably his most enduring achievement was the design of the Avtomát Kaláshnikova, or Automatic Rifle, the AK-47.

8.1 Stoner_and_Kalashnikov.jpg
Stoner and Kalashnikov in 1990 with their respective designs

Designed in 1945 by Kalashnikov and introduced to the Soviet Army in 1948, the AK-47 is a gas-operated "assault" rifle, chambered in 7.62x39mm, firing a 120gr bullet at muzzle velocity of around 2350 fps. It has been estimated that as many as 70 million of these weapons have been produced by more than 30 countries worldwide, and have seen use by the militaries of countless nations as well as nut-job radicals, insurgencies and revolutionaries the world over. By any measure, this has been a wildly successful product and it's popularity as an inexpensive, easy to produce and highly reliable combat weapon cannot be overemphasized. The accuracy and quality of the AK-47 is often debated, but in the hands of a competent shooter they're good enough to ruin your day to a distance of several hundred yards and often beyond.

Welcome to the PLA, the Fu Jian Province and State Factory 386

8.2 PolyTech scaled 2.jpgPoly Technologies (PolyTech) Legend AK-47/S

Although the AK-47 is produced at factories around mainland China (and the world) with varying standards of quality, some of the most sought after examples were made by Poly Technologies at State Factory 386 in Fu Jian Province, PRC. These rifles were exported to the United States for two years only; 1988 and concluding with the implementation of the import ban in 1989. Established in 1984, Poly Tech is essentially the export division for the People's Liberation Army, or PLA, and the Legend Series represents their deluxe model with a milled (rather than stamped) receiver and a number of other upgraded features. They are actually very nicely made, very collectible and command premium prices. They are also a lot of fun to shoot and parts are abundant and relatively inexpensive should something break.

So are there any strong opinions, for or against, the AK-47? Does the origin of this particular firearm influence your answer?

***This Old Gun***

This week's Old Gun comes from our pal Blake. It's a Swiss made K31 purchased from the now defunct SAMCO Global. Blake tells us three things make this rifle interesting: the straight-pull bolt, the legendary accuracy, and the very consistent 7.5x55 Swiss military ammunition. It also sounds like Blake has shot the rifle competitively and has scored well with it. However, like many of us, he's convinced the rifle shoots better than he can.

8.3 Blake k31-1 scaled.jpgSwiss K31 courtesy Blake

Blake mentioned one other thing I'd never heard of. Apparently, a lot of these rifles have a tag under the butt plate with the name of the last person the rifle was issued to. Looks like Karl Bannier had this one... how very cool is this?!!

12 By the way, worked out the 1911 and Garand yesterday.

We won't mention my failures with the .243.

Anyway, the range I was at, there's a steel plate hanging at 175 yards, 10" x 14".

Made a wonderful sound when being whacked by a 30 cal bullet.

Paper targets are all well and good, but give me a good steel target any day!

13 I have shot a K31, and they are fine rifles, as are their ancestor, the schmidt rubin. Workmanship on both are excellent. When they brought in large batches of M11's in in the 60's and 70's, ammo was a problem,as the Swiss wouldn't cut loose with something still in use. Norma stepped up and started to offer it. Also, handloaders could use .284 Winchester ammo , fireforming and loading with .311 bullets. Now the guys with Winchester 88's and 100's in .284 use the Swiss brass(Norma, Partizan) to keep running.

14 I love my Walther P 38 pistol. I saw them listed as one of the guns most likely to hold its value the other day. I try to go to the range on weekdays, since I am retired and the range is busy on weekends. The outdoor range here in Tucson, however, is only open on weekends. That's for the AR 15 and the Winchester 30-30.

18 One of the reason the AK is reliable as a gas operated system is because it's a gas piston operation.

What ever happened to the 'fad' of making gas piston ARs?

I like the paper targets with the layer of yellow chalk beneath the black. A hit makes a nice yellow circle easy to see 100 yards away.

__________

You still have a bullet that was simply too small.

AKs have their own issues, most of which is the production quality was all over the place.

Still, had the American military made something more simple and rugged like the AK with the larger caliber, I think it would have been way better than the M-16 experience.

Posted by: Blago at October 14, 2018 07:31 PM (UfkIY)

56 It's important to note that the AKM's - and later AK-74's - reputation for reliability was earned by models that were put together right. (AKM is the more modern, stamped-receiver variant that most US clones are coped from)

Crap AK's will have crap reliability, especially with crap maintenance. Just ask anyone who had to train Iraqis and Afghanis on AKM's.

The good news is that most copies available in the US are decent from a functional standpoint, even if you sometimes have to watch out for things like canted front sights. There are a ton of good resources, and even a cursory effort at doing your homework should net you a good rifle. Usually this is a matter of avoiding canted sights, improperly heat treated receivers and fire control parts (resulting in egged out holes and peened components).

Now, on the longevity front; ability to operate in dirty conditions does not automatically equate to longevity. It's not uncommon for the rails bent into the top of stamped AKM clone receivers to start cracking at around 30k rounds. These can sometimes be repaired with welding. You have the option of getting rifles with thicker RPK pattern receivers, though. These can be distinguished from AKM receivers externally if you learn what to look for.

They are an effective rifle that will last a few lifetimes of real use. The round counts needed to clap them out usually require deep pockets and recreational use.

M16/AR15's on the other hand will usually have the lower receiver (as long as you don't get stupid messing with the fire control parts) and bolt carrier last forever, with upper receivers giving up the ghost from wear after you hit 6-figure round counts. On the original pattern 20" rifles you might never break or wear out a bolt; on the shorter ones, the shorter you go, the more rapidly you will break bolts and shoot out barrels (gas ports on the shorter ones erode faster, even if the throats don't).

It seems to reach out 50 -75 yards more with a little better accuracy. I liked the milled recvrs too.

I guess thats why I have a pile of SKS's 15 high now (just got in 2 paratroopers this week).

I have a model M sks that takes the AK mags which is the best of both worlds.

I love those Swiss rifles also and have 2 1896/11's, 2 1911's, and 7 K-31s (2 of em unissued) and a 1889. They all shoot better than I can.

One of the 1911's is a P series (the soldier took it home with him when his service was over).

I like the 1911s and 1896/11's a little better because the longer sight radius is good in case these ole eyes ever need to line up on one of them antifa snowflakes during the burning times.

You're doing it wrong.

Spend 'bout $350~$400 on the rifle. Savage w/ Accu-Trigger, or Ruger All-American, Mossberg MVP, etc. Those are all true near-MOA rifles, and many of the Rugers are proving to be Sub-MOA...luck of the draw to get a "sweet" one, but they're not rare.

Spend $500 ish on the scope, and another $200 on bases and rings.

Thousand dollar rifle with a $200 scope is only going to result in your realizing 1/2 the rifle's capability, at best.

Put some more money into top-end lessons from Weasel, or someone he'd recommend in your area.

Oh, and buy a huge variety of factory ammo till you find the recipe your rifle likes best. Then buy a case or pallet of it, to last you a lifetime.

Or, learn to reload and cook up your own. Either works.

Good luck.

AIM SMALL.

Blake, that is so correct. When I introduced my niece and her husband to the wonders of a Rolling Block with 45-70 black powder cartridges, they were shooting at a steel target 200 yards away. Once they figured the range and started hitting the steel there was no stopping them. I had brought 80 rounds and could have brought 10 times more. They loved that 405 grain bullet making the target clang.

72 The placard in my K-31 showed the owner to be from Gruyeres. I got a kick out of that since I love Gruyere cheese so much.

It shoots well and I've always wanted to take a deer with it. I even bought some hunting ammo for it and tested it out at the range. But every time I think about taking it hunting, I imagine a monster buck walking out in low light conditions and me trying to pick up those iron sights with my old eyes. I need to take a buck early in the season and then take the K-31 out later to shoot a doe under good light conditions.

73 When you've got two rifles that are essentially world co-standards, the reason is niche.

AR-15: the professional's rifle. Accurate. Shits where it eats, so it's the choice of well-trained forces who have the discipline, resources and opportunity for proper cleaning and maintenance.

AK-47: the slob's rifle. Inaccurate, stone-axe reliable, the choice of semi-literate peasants who can keep it running in their Third World shithole with a motor-oil soaked knotted shoelace.

in?

Sorry to be "that guy" but you are not going to be happy with a $200
scope. And don't forget to budget for the mount and rings. That could
easily be $100+. On plus side, there are many good rifles for <

Completely agree about the glass. I have heard people complain about overpaying for a gun, for ammo, but never, ever overpay for glass.

A few years ago I was at the rifle range, one of the semi-regulars paid something like a thousand for a scope on his custom .308. When someone grumbled about the price, he just said, "here, take a look".

Silence and nodding followed.

79 My favorite AR's are in caliber other than 5.56. Two 6.5 Grendels and a Rock River in 7.62 x39. The Rock River uses AK magazines and has been flawless. Never hiccuped even when shooting mostly 3rd world steel ammo. Still, I think a piston version of the AR would be superior to the direct impingement system. I run all the AR's wet and clean religiously. If you do that, they are reliable as AK's.

99 " You still have a bullet that was simply too small. "

This usually results in people talking about bore diameter, but it is becoming very evident with modern ammunition development that caliber is probably the least important element as long as you keep it reasonable. For a general purpose intermediate round -

- You need a certain amount of mass, probably at least 75gr, possibly all the way out to ~125+

- If your mass is too low in proportion to your caliber, you will have stubby projectiles with crap ballistic coefficient (7.62x39, x35, and 7.92x33). These work fine at shorter ranges but we can do better.

- If you have too much mass - for example, if you are trying to make the projectile longer for a higher BC - you will have trouble getting up to a good speed to get a good ballistic coefficient far downrange, and/or you will have more recoil than you want for a general purpose round.

The end result of this is - pick the mass you need to get the job done, then pick a mix of projectile profile (and thus caliber) and powder you want to use to get the job done.

Posted by: Surfperch at October 14, 2018 07:49 PM (tKF1g)

102 Question for y'all gun experts:

I guess this is hypothetical since I do not own a weapon, but I was wondering something. You know how places like movie theaters say no weapons allowed and yet make no effort to ensure compliance? (I don't usually perceive a threat at these places, but I do feel the most likely place a person might get shot is in a gun-free zone.)

Anyway, what if a person carries a gun in anyway and is somehow discovered? (I mean a responsible person who would never display the weapon or shoot someone except to save a life.) What happens then? Does the person just say "Oops, forgot I was carrying" or what?

Posted by: Emmie at October 14, 2018 07:50 PM (4HMW8)

103 Ben Had, if you mean physical deflection of the round, steel is always either hanging, or on some move-able arm/spring-linked base/hinge, so it can fall back and then "self heal" (stand upright again). Or a hinge with no spring, so it just falls back (popper).

Distant targets, for rifle, the deflected round should not be an issue (though often they are housed inside heavy wood shelters, to capture side-riccochets). Soil at the base should be soft. Gotta watch which ammo you use - AR500 steel will take a beating, but no reason to abuse if faster, so steel-core ammo is usually verboten.

For handgun, obviously steel is much closer, same considerations apply - steel moves/swings/falls. No magnum ammo.

Surprising how much lead splatter can travel back towards the shooter, but it's something that typicaly just stings, at most, normal protective wear more than adequate.

If you plan to eventually install optics (red dot, scope, etc.), get folding back up iron sights. They will fold down out of the way. And the optics should be quick-detach so you can easily remove them when they shit the bed.

125 Somewhat related to the gun thread, since everything involving guns here in California ends up in front of the 9th Circuit sooner or later...
Trump has nominated three new justices to the 9th Circuit, and they're all members of the Federalist Society. That's still not enough to give us a sane majority, but it's three more steps toward that eventual goal.
Harris and Feinstein are, of course, both throwing hissy fits. They're complaining that the White House didn't consult with them and get their approval. But the article about the new nominations over at American Thinker stated that the White House had been negotiating with them throughout the summer.

140 Anyway, what if a person carries a gun in anyway and is somehow discovered?

Depends on your local laws. In Texas, if the notice does not conform to certain specific laws, you are not actually violating any criminal statute, only the business's policy. If you refuse to leave after being given proper notice, then you are trespassing.

142 On the subject of AK accuracy, both of mine are accurate enough with iron sights. Minute of man at 300 yards. My Yugo SKS might be a tad more accurate at at that range but it's milled and short stroke piston driven so I would expect it to be slightly better.

143 Another Lurker here... I have a Saiga 7.62x39 hunting rifle converted back to AK status, just so it looks/handles better. The weird thing about my rifle is that the damn thing is LOUD. I shoot a number of calibers/rounds but the AK is by far the loudest. At the range, I always get looks from others whenever I start firing. Anyone else have any comments on this sound issue with this caliber? (I use cheap Tula metal case ammo).

Does the person just say "Oops, forgot I was carrying" or what?--------------------
It really depends on local laws and attitudes. If the policy is a corporate one, and you're in a gun friendly area, then you might get off with a "warning". But here in LA County, I think it's pretty safe to say that you'd be asked to leave at minimum.

--------------

Here in GA, if they would like to make places off limits to carry, then they have to use a state approved sign. If you go in carrying anyway and they notice it, they first have to ask you to leave. It only gets legal if you refuse that request.

156 Unless it's federal or state - airport, state or federal buildings, schools, etc, gun free zones are just corporate policies. They can ask you to leave the premises and you must comply. But the constitution and a state CCL come first. Corporate policy second.

159 Considering that a lot of people seem to be getting firearms, or perhaps just rifles, for the first time and are getting them for non-recreational purposes - a note on scopes:

~$200 Wal Mart blister pack scopes are largely a complete waste of time and money. Especially consider that you're using time, gas, and ammo (and maybe range fees, for some of you) to try and zero them. A scope that won't hold zero or track correctly is worse than no scope at all.

The cheapest magnified glass I would consider for serious use are the lower end SWFA SS scopes: specifically the 1-4x, the fixed 10x, and the 3-9x. Their entire schtick is no-frills glass that tracks correctly and is durable. They will be heavy, the glass will not knock your pants off, and the reticles are basic, but they should work.

That said, if you are looking at glass for this sort of reason and can actually afford $1k plus rings, stop being cheap and do so - roll over to SnipersHide and see what is a good bang for the buck with a good track record.

Need a red dot on a budget? For serious use, a new Aimpoint PRO or a used one, depending on budget. Period. If you can't afford that, get acquainted with your irons. I don't care if you have astigmatism; use a rear peep sight co-witnessed to clear up the dot, because anything with a similar level of ruggedness and no astigmatism issues will cost twice as much.

160 . . . . rifle layaway jar (hypothetically) as full as i want it: i set aside $300 for ammo, $200 for optics, and an even $1000 for the rifle itself. Are there any other expenses i should hypothetically) factor in? On that budget, what would you buy?

Another layaway jar?
Rule of thumb is ½ rifle cost is the minimum optics cost, and 50-50 is my recommended split. If you're target shooting you prioritize power and repeatability, the ability to keep zero through power and range adjustments. For hunting you want simplicity, bigger objectives, and high quality glass for deep woods and dusk brightness. For self defense you don't need an optic --the perp is right there!

If you're just plinking or recreational shooting, you don't need $1000 for the rifle, split some off for the optic. I've learned the hard way firearms are more accurate than humans, and humans are limited by what they can see.

180 One time, at a steels match they used to have up in Corona (SoCal gun nutz morons may know it, Rahaague's, mostly a shotgun range), there was a funny steels incident.

There was one of those 6-plate plate racks, at the end (inside the U of the berm), up against the end. RO with timer is back behind me, everyone else is much further back.

On the 2nd or 3rd plate, when I hit it, I felt a sting on one side of my nose, and felt blood trickling down. Didn't hurt much, I knew it was just a nick, so I kept shooting, and wanted to shock the squad if I could. When the rack was clean, I stopped/cleared/holstered, then turned around.

Hilarious. Various people exclaimed "oh, he's hit!" and stuff like that, but the excitement was brief, as I was laughing and wiping the blood off. That was with jacketed 9mm ammo (factory, before I was reloading).

RE: Bullets on steel - soft lead bullets deform like throwing a scoop of ice cream at a wall. Jacketed bullet are similar except the jacket turns into light weight high-velocity shrapnel, the lead core is still like ice cream. Paint the targets with white paint, the bullet splash makes a dark gray splash mark between 1 and 2 inches across on the steel - you can see and hear it.

The jacket and lead splash makes a trench under the target. Water collects there. In the rain, sometimes the only way to be sure of a hit is to see the bullet splash hit the water in the trench and throw water all over.

If you put steel targets inside a wood frame, find some old semi-truck mud flaps or rubber conveyor belts, cut into strips, and screw them into the wood frame around the target. The jackets will bounce off. Better yet, hang targets from old swing sets.

I regularly shoot steel from 100 to 1,000 and I have never seen anything come back.

I'm torn on them too. They are great for long range feedback but it's hard to use them to zero in for accuracy.

At CMP, I tried dialing in at 600 yards for wind, elevation, grain, etc but the target kept reporting hits in the exact same spots. So I'm not sold on how accurate they are other than to say you hit the target somewhere.

211 Well, my big gun moment this week was driving up Cade's Cove outside of Sevierville, TN, to see the Kentucky rifle exhibit before it closes on the 25th. Whole bunch of mountain rifles, ranging from 1790 up to 1875. For those that aren't familiar with the Southern Mountain Rifle variant of the Kentucky rifle, they were the original "black rifles," usually made with walnut stocks and iron furniture instead of the maple and brass of the lowland rifles. Very plain at first glance, but these examples were well shaped and proportioned, so the overall effect is understated elegance.

I a lot of fun, though I didn't enjoy Sevierville traffic or getting stuck behind flatlanders who are apparently frightened and confused by the concept of an S-curve and consequently drive fifteen miles below the speed limit.

It's my understanding in NC that, comically, if you don't have a concealed carry permit you'll get in much less trouble than if you do. I don't remember the details, but I think it's essentially the difference between a misdemeanor and a felony.

Funny how that sort of perverse incentive works.

Turkey - and the Saudis - of course lie all the time.

The press, almost anywhere, cannot be relied on in matters of this sort. Certainly not in the MidEast, outside some Israeli outlets.

The guy's connection to the Brotherhood and jihadism don't really help understand anything, as long as ......

The actual facts aren't known. Which they don't appear to be. And it seems the "fiancee" got some facts wrong.

224 Since gun thread and all - just got back from grocery shopping at Kroger's. High end white professional neighborhood, well lit, last place on earth you'd expect trouble.

Long story short, a minor fenderbender in the parking lot resulted in a *my dick's bigger than your's* shouting match and then a fair bit of shoving and punches being thrown - it had that bad feel to it and it got ugly. The lot was full of other shoppers and families. My wife and son were with me and son had gotten in front of me and was ready. I looked around and an awful lot of folks had pulled their kids and spouses behind them and had a hand on a hip.

I had left my EDC in the truck when I went into the store. I know better but I thought it was always a safe area. Stunad!

LEO showed up in force and deescalated after a bit of head cracking it but the moral of the story is, any place has to potential to go red.

231 102 Question for y'all gun experts:

I guess this is hypothetical since I do not own a weapon, but I was wondering something. You know how places like movie theaters say no weapons allowed and yet make no effort to ensure compliance? (I don't usually perceive a threat at these places, but I do feel the most likely place a person might get shot is in a gun-free zone.)

Anyway, what if a person carries a gun in anyway and is somehow discovered? (I mean a responsible person who would never display the weapon or shoot someone except to save a life.) What happens then? Does the person just say "Oops, forgot I was carrying" or what?
Posted by: Emmie at October 14, 2018 07:50 PM (4HMW

In TX it depends. IF you are found to be carrying in an anti-gun location AND they do not have the Red 51 or the official 30.06 sign (concealed) or 30.07 (open carry) sign, the most they can ask you to do is to leave. With the presence of the signage indicated, you can be in serious hot water if caught by the cops while carrying.

Yeah, the Ruskies knew all about the StG44 since they were looking down the wrong end of the barrel of them. I do believe that the Kalishnikov took quite a few design features of the StG44 for his AK-47. Set those two firearms side-by-side and the heritage of the AK-47 becomes very apparent.

My wife used to raise an eyebrow at the places I carried, until the church shootings took place.

Anyway, my philosophy is this: One cannot pick and choose as to when one will run into trouble.

Plus, how is this for a hypothetical: One is in court, defending oneself because the gun had to be used in self-defense, and, it turns out, the prosecution finds out one hasn't been diligent about carrying.

The prosecution will then paint you, the defendant, as "looking for trouble, because you don't carry all the time."

Huge range of options out there. I would go to a reputable gun dealer, find a nice used smith or sig in 9mm. Either would make a great first gun.

I avoid Glocks for first time handgun owners because of their safety feature being on the trigger. I'd get an ambi safety on a 6" 9mm.

I'm a big fan of beretta too but they can be heavy for first timers.

266 Lurker touched on it a lot of posts ago. The AK/AKM and its reputation for reliability is well over egged. Like any mechanical device its suffers as it wears and a lot depends on initial build quality. The bullshit "mud" comparison test between AK and AR as a means of reliability gauging is a joke. In most cases a closed up AR with a mag in place is less likely to have a mud/debris stoppage than a AK will have a failure for the hammer to go forward when full of mud. Reliability is more than the joke mud tests you see on Youtube. Having said that, I had about 7 AR rifles have various stoppages to out-rite
failures, out of about 30 shooters on the range shoot I ran yesterday. 90% was lack of lube the rest, crap magazines or bloody safety chamber flags breaking off and sticking in the chamber causing a nice failure to feed or worse case a barrel obstruction and the drama that that can cause. I have banned chamber flags on my range due to the problems they cause. The weapon is safe if the working parts are locked to the rear and the mag is out after inspection of chamber.

A Ruger P95 could probably be had for $200 or less. They're ugly and heavy but reliable as heck and very accurate for social work. They also have a de-cocker which is sort of nice safety-wise for non-enthusiasts, too.

The P95 is 9mm and there's a P90 in .45 (iirc), but I have no experience with the P90. I wouldn't hesitate to buy one if I found it, though. I've got other fancier and more expensive stuff, but my P95 is probably my cheapest, ugliest, heaviest, and most favoritist gun.

What do you use for AK-patterns that don't lock open?
Posted by: hogmartin at October 14, 2018 08:57 PM (y87Qq)

"For inspection, parallel arms. Clear, ease springs."

If the rifle has been cleared of rounds it is clear. Rounds do not leap into the chamber and lock in by themselves, especially if there is no magazine present.
Assume everyone is dangerous until you have checked yourself of course but our range procedure is safe.

316 I think the first gun I ever shot was some sort of .22 pistol owned by a friend. the Very first gun I owned was a .50 percussion CVA carbine I built from a kit.

However, I tend to forget about those, because the first gun that I was ever really attached to was a .50 caliber flintlock that I built from a lock kit, a barrel, and a chunk of maple. That was the gun I wanted and had been working towards since I was about 14. That is my real first gun.

317 Most of the old 70s/80s ex-military/police Sigs (P225?) I remember seeing for really cheap a decade or more ago are probably in safes now, but:

If you find an ex-police or military weapon make sure it doesn't have the magazine release at the heel of the grip unless it's really what you want. They can be hard to find magazines for and expensive when you finally do.

319 Weasel, you're not at Weasel Acres, right? So this is in some inhabited part of the greater Beltway Swamp-plex?

Heard some handgun shots, at a distance (pop pop is quite easy to recognize, on a quiet night) one Saturday night, last month I think. Several, in a few spurts, over 5 minutes. Then, same night, middle of, about 3AMish, when up to answer nature's call, heard a rifle shot (definitely), and much closer.

WTF? Not a lot of gun-play in my area. As in none. But that's the second time the last few years I've heard gunshots at night. Previous time was middle of night, definitely rifle, not *that* far away, loud enough to wake me up, I think, though not sure about that.

327 Greetings:

Mr. Stoner's "buffer group" for the win.

I've fired the M-16 (with its regular front end and with a CAR-15 front end ) and a number of different AK-47s. I was a fan of the 3-shot burst with Mr. Stoner's equipment and it wasn't really feasible with the AK.

My big M-16 gripe (68-70) was the Army's fixation on the 20-round magazine. We actually had 30-rounders (contraband, no less) smuggled in from the States and borrowed from the Green Beanies.

do her and your marriage a favor, and let someone else teach her.

first suggested step is to get her to attend a "Women on Target" class by the NRA at a local range.

they start with the basics, in a class room, then move to the firing line after lunch.

by women, for women, so no stress, no/low testosterone, and it's a solid block of instruction.

then, shell out for a certified trainer at a local range for a some classes. if your experience is anything like mine, you'll have a wife that is not only as good, or better with the firearms, but one who *wants* to go see what's for sale at the toy store, go to the range, hunting, and even get into reloading.

it's a great kind of monster to create, IMHO.

331 There's a youtube video (search for hrfunk) where he tries to qualify for a LEO handgun test with a modern Remington 1858 cap and ball revolver. It's shot at distances of 4 feet out to 50 feet, sometimes with the weak hand. I'm wasn't surprised that he qualified easily but folks who dismiss the old guns might not expect it.

The one varience was for the tactical reload. The test is designed for semi auto or double action revolvers with speed loaders. He used the historic approach: pull a second revolver. Think Josey Wales.

Kinda a fun video.

I was rather shocked at how close the distances were.

I'm so sick of the "AK is inaccurate" myth. The truth is that the AK is "battle accurate" and perfectly capable of scoring aimed hits at 300 yards and more.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=chiTUvryG5U&t=38s

Posted by: Guzalot at October 14, 2018 08:30 PM (schB/)

The main problem with AK accuracy is that the sights really aren't as conducive to pinpoint use, with the short sight radius being the biggest drawback. The rifle itself is perfectly capable of excellent combat accuracy, within the ballistic limitations of the round itself.

The long sight radius with peep sight of the Valmet and Galil AK variants are one of the best improvements to the platform.

They rationalize it as a safety issue but it's mostly because they collect and resell the used brass to commercial reloaders and steel cases aren't reloadable.

On the other hand, steel-JACKETED rifle rounds definitely have the potential of causing fires in dry conditions. I've seen it happen. Virtually every outdoor range in SoCal is absolutely killer on magnet-checking your rifle ammo.

I used to pull the bullets from surplus Russkie 7.62x54r and replace them with commercial Prvi Partizan non-magnetic bullets so that I could actually shoot my M39 Finnish Mosin. Shot just fine, but it was only partly successful, as the PP bullets were boat-tailed and didn't have a crimp groove, so there wasn't as much bearing surface. I'd have to single-load rounds to keep the clunky Mosin action from dinking the rounds in the magazine.

I quit doing that when I got overeager once while loading, ended up with a couple of rounds rim-locked and while clearing the rifle ended up pulling the bullet and spilling powder all over the action. Ugh. I can be a dumbass sometimes.

That's 'bout a $2,000 Christmas Present.

Though it's a piece of jewelry that shoots, it's not made to hold up under heavy .357 Magnum usage. Frame cracks right around the firing pin bushing, from absorbing the high-pressure recoil there. Cartridge head bears directly against the frame at that point.

Stick to .38 Special +P, or softer .357 loadings.

You looking at classic, High Polish Blue or Nickel, Satin Nickel, or one of the later Stainless variants?

He brought the mangled remains into our shop for repair because the insurance company insisted on an estimate to repair.

When the equipment came into the shop, the technician recorded on the check-in paper under 'Complaint', "Struck by bus".

All the Carbon Steel ones, for sure. And I'm not aware of the status of the Stainless variants, one way or another.

The Trooper Mk III & Mk IV are substantially beefier in that area of the recoil shield and bushing area.

Plus...Troopers don't give in to spring fatigue, being coil powered. Pythons are "V" type leaf mainspring....smooth harmonics, but can and do fatigue.

It MUST be remembered, that the Python's origin was not as a heavy duty combat gun, but from a target frame and lockwork.

460 My favorite subject - the AK.

I have been evangelizing this point of view for over a decade on the nets, so let me give my two kopeks here and now. (I am at work so this will be brief and a hit and run.)

The AK was designed for revolution. It has a couple attributes that set it apart. First though, understand that all design is a tradeoff between competing goals. I am not saying that it is perfectly this, or perfectly that, but that these attributes weighed more heavily in this design than in other guns.

Those attributes. - cheap and easy to manufacture in volume, easy to use for untrained peasant troops, reliable under low maintenance conditions (peasant troops). The tradeoffs are accuracy, long life, and robustness--those are things you want when you place a high value on the person behind the gun.

Early versions, and prototypes had even more stampings than what was later produced and that is the give away. Stampings are great if you plan to make 100k units, but that means a factory, and in the commie East, that means the state. The gun was produced to hand out to peasants to revolt.

Machined parts can be distributed to many small factories outside of state control. This is nothing new, and look at the innovations of Harper's Ferry to see that these things were at play in the early days of the industrial revolution. Craft built guns empowered the people to defend themselves. Pioneer guns. Mass produced weapons are something else again.

It is no accident that there are so many companies making ARs but not AKs, that is inherent in the design.

The best part about this strategy is that you kill off all the Kulaks and land owners, and then take over governement, and now you have a factory so you ship the guns off to your neighbors so they too can join in on the slaughter.

It is also no accident that the AK is the gun our troops run into in every third world shithole around the world. That was the plan.

I fucking hate that gun. No, I don't hate the gun, but I hate the ignorance that makes people glorify it and the guy who the soviets say designed it.

516 You have hit upon what should be a continuing theme in the gun thread: com-bloc small arms genius. Was Kalashnikov's automat derivative? YES. He borrowed from every available design he could... but, was it genius? DECIDEDLY SO. Imagine designing a rifle system that could be
1) built with substandard materials
2) so sloppily toleranced it will run, effectively, with substandard ammunition
3) so intuitive to operate that a total idiot can run it.
Browning knew his designs would be appreciated and used by a nation accustomed to rifles, handguns, and shotguns. Mikhail, Simonov, Tokarev and Makarov built guns to be used by beet farmers.

518 how many americans have been killed by ak-47?

Essential none in the great scheme of things, Joe, even counting the Vietnam War and the recent Middle East conflicts. The big victim of the AK47 are the brown people of Africa and Asia, numbering in the millions, but they are acceptable losses, right?.

519 515 488 The AK had a lot of teething troubles, and didn't reach the Russian army in large numbers until about 1956.

I didn't know that. I always thought the Norks had them in the Korean War.

Wikipedia has a pretty good rundown under the title "List of Korean War Weapons," Allied as well as Communist. The Norks and Chicoms employed a vast miscellany of surplus weaponry from both world wars, plus Chinese-produced versions of WW2 guns, but the AK didn't make the Korean scene.

520 The AK-47 had many features. You could teach a man or woman to make a urine stream and make holes in the snow or whatever other target was handy and then apply those principles to the functions of shooting this rifle. You could then hand it to a third world Uneducated soldier/Guerrilla and he could kill, maim and terrorize with it and never worry about cleaning it.It's number one feature though was unmistakably the best "It was given to every Nation that opposed the West, NATO, SEATO and the US FREE!The M-16 and it's variants are much better Rifles.
