The Morning Rant

talking ape.jpg
"Now that the massive 'stop Kavanaugh' efforts failed as miserably as has Kathy Griffin's career, get ready for a whole new bunch of rule change proposals from progressives, including reworking the Surpeme Court, screwing up the Senate, and of course, getting rid of the Electoral College. Not that any of these have a prayer of succeeding, but it does tell us what they plan to try to do should they regain power. Oh, and impeach Drumpf. Anything except running smart campaigns and winning elections."

And this brainiac is the "Intelligence and national security reporter for the NBC News Investigative Unit." Who, apparently, has never read the U.S. Constitution. I suspect there's not a lot behind that fancy-ass title he's got. Kind of like seeing 'petroleum transfer engineer' on a job resumé. Just one look, and you know it's bs.

To be fair, he may know and just consider it unfair.

Which probably just indicates that he doesn't understand the reasons why Madison and the other Framers went with the structure as it was.

It'd be nice if the connection between the Senate and the states was clearer, like, for instance, if the state legislatures appointed Senators instead of the people electing them.

But that's just crazy talk.

I do wonder what an Article V convention would produce.

Any changes would need to pass 3/5ths of the state legislatures, so I can't imagine anything too outlandish like a ban on abortion or a repeal of the 2nd amendment.

But a repeal of the 17th? Still probably not. People are tied to the idea of Democracy in everything.

A repeal of the 16th? Maybe.

Term limits? Perhaps.

BBA? Outside chance.

74 "We don't like equal representation in the Senate because we don't understand the relationship between state power and federal power. Also, it sometimes hurts our coastal desires."
This is not a good reason to go monkeying about with the Constitution. We already mostly broke the Senate when we went to direct election (a disaster in its own right). Proposing that we eliminate the directly-proportioned upper house by turning it into a second commons is a calculated play to destroy the country and remake it in the coastal image. Just like when it has been proposed before, when power centers were different. No one wants to compete.

There are a lot of hurdles to jump before court packing begins.

Bare majority in the Senate willing to eliminate the filibuster completely.

Bare majorities in both chambers willing to pass legislation to make the court packing into law.

A president willing to sign it.

A Senate willing to place two more justices up.

I don't think the political will exists to go through all of those steps.

Provide a mechanism for states to declare bankruptcy, but also outline the consequences.

1) Immediate loss of statehood, and conversion to a territory.

2) All elected officials and all state employees above dog catcher are barred from elected office or state employment in any state in the Union or in the Federal government for the rest of their lives.

3) The state is responsible for all of its debts, and can only reapply for statehood once the debt load is 100% paid off.

121 I know most of us know this, but here's the reason the states each get the same number of senators:

So that we would be a united group of states. If the states AREN'T treated equally, what possible reason would Texas have to help Vermont? Why would Louisina allow trade through New Orleans to Minnesota? Why would Colorado allow California to have their water?

Equal treatment in the upper house is what allows the states to be united.

If you go proportional all the way, then four or five states will get to push around the other 45. And the other 45 won't take that treatment for long.

These people don't understand what causes war. Shit like that causes geographical conflict.

This sounds like something out of the Bible.

God says to the Israelites, "if you break my covenant with you, your life will become horrible. In fact, it will become so horrible that in the evening you will wish it were morning, and in the morning, you will wish it were evening,"

That's a loose paraphrase, but the meaning has always stuck with me as the epitome of a miserable existence.

--Feel free to suggest others. Arguably everything from the 16th forward deserves to be scrutinized carefully, although trying to repeal the 16th is shooting the moon.

I do wonder what an Article V convention would produce.

Any changes would need to pass 3/5ths of the state legislatures, so I can't imagine anything too outlandish like a ban on abortion or a repeal of the 2nd amendment.

If that were a real gun cabinet, then things would be very different. From the research into the topic that I did a little while back, I learned that handguns are essentially banned in Japan outside of certain individuals (law enforcement, etc...) that require them as part of their job. You're allowed to own a hunting rifle. But not only does it need to be licensed, but the local police are supposed to come to your house and inspect it every year.

197 Complicated Spiritual Business

Praying for others > praying for self, so I've read.

Yeah, but, some days I get so worried,
there's so much out of kilter in our lives.
I've sinned and erred my way
into a deepening hole,
without a clue how or even whether
our fortunes can be reversed.
I look around at ten million
seeming screaming problems
and begin to despair.

I turn, by habit, to the inner dialogue
with The Almighty & Company.
I begin to ask for
-- what I know They already know
better than I do --
what I need.

Before I can cry, "Please?"
I suddenly am overwhelmed
by all the the wonders I behold each day,
the opportunities I've been given,
the grace I have received, and
I find myself compelled to whisper,
"Thanks."

Pelosi's Dad was good friends with the mob, she knows how it works. Tie that with the Soviet infiltration ... and it still has not allowed them to completely overthrow us ... thanks largely to The Constitution and its checks and balances and established due processes.

We are in a war, and there may be some constitutional military tribunals to deal with the massive coup that is still underway. But public opinion has to continue to move toward realization of how evil these liars and swindlers really are. And they are being exposed for sure ... Red Wave would be helpful.

Doesn't it also imply that they have superior qualities to other groups? Many other groups from native americans to Muslims to African tribes to asians have been just as ruthless, but they all failed.

So doesn't this belief imply a belief that whites are superior in their abilities, and not just their ambition? That sounds RAYCISS to me. You want to say "don't go there", but she went there.

And who gets to define who is a member of the power race (or sex or class or whatever)? Why your academic betters do. Only they have the ideological purity to detect it.

The Left's default is straight up democracy..
Unless the people vote the wrong way like on social issues such as Gay Marriage, second amendment, abortion...

Then it's a civil rights decision which people are too stupid to know what the 'right' choice is...

Same for the EU... the love to have referendums
and when the people reject them, they say 'VOTE again, this time the right way !'

Two reasons that WWII became the huge cultural touchstone that it is today is that it's got a fairly unambiguously evil rogue's gallery of villains, and it's the first major war that had a shitload of film footage rather than just still photography.

One thing that strikes me about WWI is that virtually everyone that started the war in Aug '14 WANTED to go to war. They all had their own reasons, most of which had nothing to do with the Serbia/Austria quarrel that started it. The rest of Europe just piled on thinking that it'd be a quick, easy way to snatch up provinces, glory, revenge, influence etc. The big mistake that they all made was thinking they could win their part of the war in a few weeks of fighting, with relatively minimal casualties.

Oops.

First off, the Republicans have a majority in the House as well, so this point is kind of moot. The House would have also confirmed him.

Secondly, the supreme court's rulings could potentially affect any state, including small states. Why should the smaller states have to potentially be victims of larger states appointing judges or officials that could be harmful to them? That's the point of the senate.

I am sometimes there. But increasingly, I find myself doing my commute in silence - no radio, phone in the center console and out of sight. It's a good 40 minutes for me to do nothing but think while the instinctive part of my brain handles the driving. I often snap out of a thought when I get home, to find I drove there on auto-pilot (something that never happens when I have the radio on).

357 Our current situation is like cancer; it takes years for cancer to become visible. In our case, the visible signs of the cancer of Progressive philosophy were ignored by the establishment until we now are in Stage 3 or 4. The cancer has spread from academia (where it first took root), through Hollywood, and the media and is now spreading unchecked through the population. There is no way to remove the cancer without killing the patient. We must overwhelm it by massively growing the conservative base, bringing in millions of reasonable people who have been unengaged, but see in the Kavanaugh debacle the full on lethality of the left. The left is a cancer that always kills its host--the democrat party, environmentalism, feminism, Black Lives Matter, all movements taken over by the left.

370 You could get published in a sociology journal with writing like that.
-----------
Go with the Journal Social Text'. It worked for Alan Sokal:

from Wiki:

The Sokal affair, also called the Sokal hoax,[1] was a scholarly publishing sting perpetrated by Alan Sokal, a physics professor at New York University and University College London. In 1996, Sokal submitted an article to Social Text, an academic journal of postmodern cultural studies. The submission was an experiment to test the journal's intellectual rigor and, specifically, to investigate whether "a leading North American journal of cultural studies – whose editorial collective includes such luminaries as Fredric Jameson and Andrew Ross – [would] publish an article liberally salted with nonsense if (a) it sounded good and (b) it flattered the editors' ideological preconceptions".[2]

The article, "Transgressing the Boundaries: Towards a Transformative Hermeneutics of Quantum Gravity",[3] was published in the Social Text spring/summer 1996 "Science Wars" issue. It proposed that quantum gravity is a social and linguistic construct. At that time, the journal did not practice academic peer review and it did not submit the article for outside expert review by a physicist.[4][5] On the day of its publication in May 1996, Sokal revealed in Lingua Franca that the article was a hoax.[2]

Yet they didn't. For various reasons, they pissed away their human capital over the generations, and continue to do so. I don't see why I should get weepy about their failure to bootstrap themselves.

The FrenchRev killed the wrong people, ... but I'm not really up on all that history. There is certainly a good point about contrasting the two. But I think we should not put too much emphasis on Law versus Mob. "Our Mob" of deplorables will fight for individual liberty, their mob will fight for communism and Orwellian control over liberty.

It sucks because IIRC they would set things in motion that would require two or five seasons to pay off in regards to individual characters and motivations, and it's a show that could use that effectively (looking at you, Walking Dead).

450 The FrenchRev killed the wrong people, ... but I'm not really up on all that history. There is certainly a good point about contrasting the two. But I think we should not put too much emphasis on Law versus Mob. "Our Mob" of deplorables will fight for individual liberty, their mob will fight for communism and Orwellian control over liberty.

The constitution is TheLaw, but it is a control on all other law, establishing Individual Liberty as preeminent to (bad) law.

...

Francis Schaeffer in How Shall We Then Live gives a fascinating comparison of the parallels of the American and French Revolution that you might find interesting. He finds at the core the moral underpinning of the Reformation in the American Revolution, and the lack of moral underpinning of the humanist Renaissance under that of the French.

He does a great, great job also of illustrating why having a basis for the Law above the Law (e.g. a Lawgiver, God) is utterly essential, and that without it we can only have arbitrary laws chosen by whomever is in power.

Your comment on Individual Liberty is similar, but he's drilling down to ask upon what basis do we argue that something like Individual Liberty is preeminent.

471 That thinkprogress article about the electoral college is from election time. It's old.

But the central thesis is that southern states wanted the electoral college for slavery reasons, which is an absurd claim to make.

Look at the population of eligible voter distribution.

These people need to look up the Connecticut Compromise, which is where we got 2 Senators per state and reps distributed by population.

It was CT, RI and DE (small states) who wanted the system that led to the electoral college.

NY (a big state) wanted set representatives per state (like the Senate), while VA and southern states (who had faster growing populations than the north) wanted a system more akin to the house of representatives.

...So the small states compromised. Led by the Connecticut delegation.

CT was not a slave state.

Portland built a freeway through a black neighborhood fifty years ago. Even though the neighborhood is now mostly white, Leftists argue that nothing can be done now to improve the freeway or fix bottlenecks on it, due to the Original Sin of building the freeway through a black neighborhood.

Twenty years ago, all of the loaded oil barges headed north in the Hudson for Albany.

Today, because of the shale and fracking in the Midwest, Albany receives its heating oil from the Midwest via train, and then loads the remainder into oil barges for shipment to New York City.

So, the loaded barges now head south instead of north.

547 One of the things I love most about the Constitution, and the cleverness of the men who wrote it, was that first they set it up so small states would have disproportionate power inside the Federal System, to make sure that they couldn't be steamrolled by the big wealthy states. Next, they set up an Amendment system where this power could NEVER be taken away from them unless most of the small states agreed to give it up themselves.

This is the leftist's greatest error in crying about this and thinking it can change. Of course they can get the big states to agree, they always could. But how are they going to get the small states to agree to give up all of their powers and rights to the big states? By yelling at them and calling them stupid?

Berkeley #1 is the real academic institution, that keeps cranking out Nobel Prizes in chemistry and economics and what not. Berkeley #2 is all the grievance studies departments and the luxuriant "equality" bureaucracy.

For decades the professors in Berkeley #1 have ignored Berkeley #2, and focused on real work, but the problem is that Berkeley #2 intends to completely control the University, and keeps making progress towards that goal.

You already see this starting in Engineering. Ultimately, the SJWs have their sights on the physics department - after all, they don't really care about advances in physics, so long as they have control.

I think Buckley used their style because he grew up in academia and excelled at it, and it came naturally to him. Same with Whittaker Chambers. It was irritating to sa the least.

But these modern inheritors of their legacy like Goldberg, Kristol, Nichols, Rubin, etc. fit exactly into that summation.

581 It is worse than that--the Luddites don't want any freeway through their town and want to tear it all out, never mind that Interstate 5 is a major north-south and border-to-border road.

And they won't widen I-205, the bypass around most of Portland, either, although it has plenty of room for that.

Absolutely true. The Left is furiously fighting fixing the I-5 bottleneck in Portland, even though fixing the bottleneck was a key part of a state transportation package, since I-5 is critical to the economy of the whole state. The state transportation package also provided a bunch of money for things like bike lanes - the leftists think that they can keep the bike lane money, and still kill the freeway fix.

Ironically, the poor people in Portland moved east to near the I-205 bypass freeway as central Portland gentrified - shutting down I-5, and shifting all the truck traffic to I-205, would be shifting the pollution away from the gentrified neighborhoods to poor, often black neighborhoods.

But since the leftists don't live in those poor neighborhoods, they don't care.

582 I hate to say this, but I always got that vibe from William F Buckley. I do not doubt his anti-commie cred, but damn.

Buckley was brilliant. But he was an elitist, and if alive today he'd no doubt be a #NeverTrumper.

Heh. #MeToo.

Everyone thinks WFB is a great writer -- except me. I used to subscribe to NR, dead tree edition. I didn't think he was all that. Yeah, he had some $10 words he would throw out there, but I got the feeling he was just showing off to impress the rubes.

But, as you say, his anti-commie bona fides are above reproach.

right, ... founders saw the need to keep institutional religions out of government. They had seen those problems with Catholic popes and protestant kings. And their ties to the reformation are fairly clear, but it would be informative for me to delve deeper into the exact historic connections.

Christian "ideals" basically held the country together, while "TheLaw" (constitutional) was supposed to protect that God given liberty. Liberty means allowing choice ... which includes other religions, but not a religion that is really its own "nation with intent to conquer".

People have wandered from the Christian church, but that is still essentially the ethos of the people. But we are less anchored as hedonism became popularized (by those damn commie hippies ... heh) ... and the religion of our parents becomes an old remnant of fabric the holds us together, as opposed to living spiritual belief.

585 It suddenly struck me that libs want to count illegal aliens as whole people for the census, representatives and such, even though they can't vote, either. I guess they'd like to change that too, though.

Illegal aliens **do count** as residents for purposes of the census and Congressional apportionment. Utah sued over that in the last census, since Utah lost a Congressional seat due to illegals being counted. California has several Congressional seats that it doesn't deserve, due to its illegal alien population.

Something for the new right-wing Supreme Court to fix.

589 "libs want to count illegal aliens as whole people for the census, representatives"

and they do count, it is settled law (unfortunately) ... so they get their own FULL person representatives. There are about 15-20 reps assigned directly for the illegals. The illegals do count, do get represented. (anchor baby is not settled law as I understand it, it has not been directly challenged)

BINGO!
We need to understand people in the context of their own time.

Although Buckley was in some ways a "populist" --- he was sincere in preferring to be ruled by the first 300 names in the phonebook than by the Harvard faculty ---
his main concern was to prove that conservatism was intellectually respectable.

592 Is that sign photo shopped?

You know the pasty white lady, with the mental illness face, holding the sign saying kill all white people is the solution.

WTF? In Hitler's rise to power were there jews who marched in the streets carrying signs that said the solution to Germany's problem was to kill all the jews? Its seems that we have arrived a unique moment in human history where people demonstrate to advance self elimination. Clearly the diabolic is roaming freely in the minds of these self hating lunatics.

603 Just a note to BeckoningChasm... I'm hoping that the chasm isn't beckoning to you. This life is incredibly hard, especially if you do it the right way, and don't sail through ignoring all the people around you. I'm terribly sorry your friend committed suicide - it is a terrible, dark despair that comes and tears apart one's soul. Please don't follow. Where there is life, there is hope, and your life, your soul, matters. Sometimes it's day by day, sometimes it's hour by hour, sometimes it's minute by minute, but you can hold on, and things will change. Sometimes it's better, sometimes it's worse, but when you get to a point, a lot of it just seems to have gone by so incredibly fast. Despite everything, there is joy, and if you can hold on to that, if it's an early morning time of silence, or a walk seeing the sun play with the changing of the leaves, or what have you. I'm a religious person, I'll pray for you, but God loves you too, and He hears those in despair, and though it's never easy, I hope that if you endeavor to come closer to Him, you'll be able to sense this Love as well, and it will serve as a comfort and strength.
