Update on the nails: I bought some of the high-potency acetone, and it worked mostly, but there are still some spots that are stuck pretty good.
So will repeat today and see how it goes.

It really relies on the state's GOP to head things like this off.
The VA GOP is....useless. They aren't going to support Corey Stewart since he beat out the VA GOP's preferred candidate. It's about the same situation that gave our state McAuliffe.
VA has election fraud pretty well baked into the cake. Richmond is always one of the last areas to report, and for the simple reason that they need to know how many votes they must manufacture given the other precinct's totals. The VA GOP has been very unwilling to pursue the vote fraud, despite concrete evidence that it is happening and it is a material issue.

I think you might be onto something there. I'm thinking it might be a commentary on the consequences of WWI. That vibrant red on the staircase is meant to emphasize it. It is the key to the meaning.
It wouldn't be the first time a modernist artist took a traditionally sacred symbol and reversed its meaning to discuss the War.

The Red Stairway is a powerful statement on destruction, hope, and the prevailing human spirit. An elderly man, wearing a black coat and hat, reliant on crutches, ascends a red staircase that winds up and then down the side of a ravaged building. In the right foreground, another man in a white shirt with arms raised is depicted buried up to his waist in debris.
As with many artists of his era, the horrors of World War II had a profound effect on Shahn and his work beginning in the early to mid-1940s. In this and other paintings Shahn, he chose to depict the devastation of the war symbolically, rather than as realistically or in a documentary vein. Here the man's journey up the stairs seems overwhelmingly arduous and seemingly leading nowhere. This lack of hope echoes the oppressive weight of the effects of war and yet, Shahn is careful to also imbue the work with a sense of hope in the fact that the man attempts the journey at all. The other figure's arms raised despite being stuck in rubble symbolizes an effort to climb out of the destruction and metaphorically echoes the efforts of people to rebuild after the damages of the war. Even the blue cloud-filled sky is a bit lighter above this figure symbolizing the promised gift of another day that comes with each new dawn.

I think that's mistaken. He doesn't just have his arms raised, he's holding a basket on his back. I think it's a basket of rubble and he's involved in rebuilding somehow.
I don't know how the photographer justifies that perspective on where his lower body should be, but he's not stuck.

Social realism and Socialist Realism are two distinct categories. Socialist Realism is art that is specifically used as propaganda for Socialist and Communist governments. It is traditionalist in style, romantic and classical in theme, and it has a heavy political message. It was named by Stalin himself and used by him, Mao, Hitler and others. Social realism is a any art with a Leftist message. It is usually modernist in style, and definitely not romantic or classical.

A local post office has some of those 1930's murals - burly men and women (haha men and women only) in heroic poses with farm implements and fields of grain, and zero details of their faces. The faces are blank. Which always creeps me out, like the people aren't really individuals, just cogs in the farm machine for the greater glory of the state.

In 1982 I was taking a graduate mgmt class as an undergrad and had to write a paper on consulting. I picked Walmart as my FIL had just taken over the pharmacy division which then was run under specialty divisions. I got to talk to several execs and found out getting people (mgmt) was the number 1 issue. I wrote the paper to go poach the good sears and other stores. they did!

All of the Senate races have tightened with outside the margin R leads in several appearing recently. Even the 'hopeless' cases like NJ are closing, my point being its across the board not individual candidates suddenly getting smarter or better looking. Manchin has a decent lead and I doubt he's going to take it by more than a squeak if at all ( Extreme left are pissed, and pissy about his Kav vote).
Plus Rasmussen has generic ballot tied.
So it's economy or Kavanaugh or whatever, but it will have down ticket impact on the House (they are also GOP) so I expect a lot of upside surprises for the GOP on election night in the House races (most of which are not even being polled).
A cascade may have started. The undecided and third party are very small in AZ for example.

The other day people were talking about business principles and debt ... but the rule has become to ignore most business principle .... LBOs were all about confiscating someone else's wealth by going deep in debt to (leverage) a buy out. This was encouraged by our government ... EasyAl Greenspan saw the problems (irrational exuberance) ... but kept greasing the skids, blowing up the bubbles.
Those rich people in LTCM were leveraged up to 300:1 and when their magic money machine for coastal "elite" millionaires broke, WE bailed them out, made them richer than ever ... and they hate us Deplorables for it, deny they ever needed us ... as the took out mortgages against the USA itself.
now we're in a mess ... hard to unwind the bubbles ... so Trump has to invite Goldman Boys right into the thick of things.

Mine was a $10 saw blade that I'd bought on Sears dot com that they wouldn't take back in-store because it somehow wasn't sold by Sears on Sears dot com but by what used to be a local hardware store that was called "Sears Local" or some nonsense and that Sears considered a separate entity while still allowing them to sell under their name on Sears dot com. The store manager told me I would need to ship the $10 saw blade back to the seller, which was Sears dot com.
I bet I'd spent $20K at Sears over the course of my life up to that point. I was exclusively a Craftsman buyer. Mowers, air compressors, hand tools, etc.
And I never darkened their door again over a $10 saw blade.

This is especially worrisome as those same people try to formulate policy.

Sure. Just the other day he was in Salt Lake City meeting with John Huber who totally doesn't exist and isn't doing anything either.
And just yesterday the US Marshall Service, which is part of the DOJ, arrested nearly 300 people mostly in Mississippi on a variety of weapons, drugs and human trafficking charges. Brings the total arrests in that one ongoing operation to over 500 people.
He's in Europe right now with the heads of virtually ever other western law enforcement and border security personnel, including representatives of Homeland Security, working on terrorism and border security issues. It's not that hard to figure our what he's doing if you want to know.

A lot of people like to file Rockwell with the Regionalists. I tend to disagree. Like you said, they were centered in the midWest. Because of this, scholars go back and forth on whether Regionalism was a movement or just a school within a larger American Academic style.

I never really stopped shopping at Sears. They have a Lands End section, so I would stop in every so often to see if they have any nice Lands End stuff on sale.
I can point to what made me shop there less and less and less. The local store, at least. It seemed like their inventory kept increasing, but they weren't getting rid of anything. Their racks were just overstuffed and not sorted into any reasonable fashion. (pun intended) Not sorted by brands or sizes or anything. It genuinely became impossible to browse for clothes. It wasn't enjoyable at all. It felt like yard saling, sifting through the thousands of items for the needle in the proverbial haystack.
I will say Indy's store was much more organized, spacious aisles, definitely a better shopping experience there, but I am just not in town enough to do it all that often. But, locally, it was a crapshow.

Happens to all entities in the dreaded private sector once they become large enough. My company crossed that thresshold about 5-years ago. I'm hoping they can last another 10-15 so I can retire before they implode.

A lot of people like to file Rockwell with the Regionalists. I tend to disagree. Like you said, they were centered in the midWest. Because of this, scholars go back and forth on whether Regionalism was a movement or just a school within a larger American Academic style.

it goes beyond that. They were co-owners of the ISP "Prodigy" back in the early 90s, and also partnered to sell equipment from IBM, Commodore and others. In the mid-90s, they terminated their catalogue services and bowed out of Prodigy - I think in the same year.
Sears had literally everything to reinvent retail. They could easily have:
- Offered cheap, subsidized computer terminals by partnering with an existing manufacturer looking for market share (probably Commodore)
- Made the subsidy contingent on maintenance of service through Prodigy - a company they owned
- Made Prodigy on those systems default to an "online" version of the Sears catalogue, where the customer could shop at Sears and pay on the spot or upon pickup
--> Sears already had computerized inventory and supply chain management for the stores. Integrating it wouldn't have been easy, but it would have been doable for "in store pickup" if they wanted to.
They had everything except the vision. Sears wouldn't have just "been Amazon" - they likely would have changed how the Internet works, making it a commerce platform first and a content platform second. I don't know if this would be a good thing or not (maybe not), but they had the power to do it. Most Americans shopped at Sears at the time.

I've said it before. At inflation that high, reality almost doesn't make sense. You get stuff where you leave home with enough money to buy groceries, but by the time you get to the store and enter the checkout line, you no longer have enough.
To get a comparably bizarre outcome in physics, you need to launch things approaching the speed of light, get close to a black hole, or something. But to do it in economics, all you need is a central authority that isn't as smart as he thinks he is.

I will admit, if I am looking for an item, or different options/models on items, I go to Amazon first, just to see what model or whatever I want to look for and the price range. From there, I usually expand out to see if I can find it cheaper elsewhere or ebay it or whatever. But, my first instinct is always to check on Amazon first. Always.
There has to be a reason though that Target succeeds where Walmart fails. I am not talking in-house shopping, because that's clear. But, online. Target prices are objectively higher and the shipping is not a 2 day guarantee. But, it doesn't seem like Target's online presence is suffering like Walmart's is....it's just curious.

In a former life, I invented a catalyst based on a different metal than previously used. It was a prototype but could produce polymers that were impossible with the older catalysts.
My lords and masters scoffed that there was no way we could develop a catalyst based on hafnium. I was appropriately punished. I later left the company.
Years later, they commercialized polymers made using my idea. Probably awarded themselves fat bonuses too.

My Sears moment was walking into the local Sears one day and realizing that the joint had become shabby, as shabby as a dollar store in a strip mall. Then I started really looking at the merchandise and realized that, with the exception of some of the tools, the stuff they sold was shabby too. That's when I knew they were on the downhill slide.

I will admit, if I am looking for an item, or different options/models on items, I go to Amazon first, just to see what model or whatever I want to look for and the price range. From there, I usually expand out to see if I can find it cheaper elsewhere or ebay it or whatever. But, my first instinct is always to check on Amazon first. Always.
There has to be a reason though that Target succeeds where Walmart fails. I am not talking in-house shopping, because that's clear. But, online. Target prices are objectively higher and the shipping is not a 2 day guarantee. But, it doesn't seem like Target's online presence is suffering like Walmart's is....it's just curious.

It's argued they didn't know what they were doing, that printing money caused by inflation, but I read an interesting bit about him.
They pretty knew that printing money would cause inflation, but they just got boxed in. It became just keep the system going for a while longer, and a while diminished to days.

Which just goes to show how bad the screwed up. I was recruited to AT&T post divestiture when they were getting into the PC business. Our PCs were, well not good.
We had a line of DOS based computer that were actually made by Olivetti, you read the correctly, and then a unicorn called the Unix PC. It was actually a pretty cool machine but AT&T being AT&T, never developed any real software for the unit. So Unix geeks loved it but it never really caught on in the corporate world which is a shame. It was a powerful little computer.

If you're game for some computer nostalgia, there are simulators for the DEC PDP-11 complete with a copy of the original UNIX.
I've seen screen shots of it running. There is a "usr/ken" directory. That's Ken Thompson's home directory.
That was the original meaning of "/usr", the user's home directories.

I was just talking with my daughter about this. She and her boyfriend (confirmed libs - don't hate me) bought a TV there and ordered it online. She said she ordered something else from Walmart because free two day shipping and you don't have to join. I also ordered some grocery item because Amazon wanted me to subscribe to their whole foods crap. I already pay for Prime. I'm not paying a separate subscription because you bought Whole Foods.
I can only hope that others are sensible to prices and service. Not snobs.

We have a Walmart in town, and the nearest Target is an hour away, so obviously I shop at WM more than Target and have no problem doing so.
But, objectively speaking, the Target experience in my estimation, is a better shopping experience. Instead of rickety old carts, the carts are nice and smooth. They have more cashiers running, not like....2/20 that WM is notorious for. The bathrooms are cleaner.
I won't speak to the workers or the clientele or the "People of Walmart" reputation. I think most WMs in my neck of the woods are perfectly fine. But, I do see why people prefer Target to WM.

Heard on FBN this morning from whoever they were interviewing that the fault of Sears demise the past five years has been strictly with their CEO. Guest(don't know name) said point blank that this guy's marketing ability was the worst he has ever seen, coupled with his terrible mismanagement of the company's structure. He cited for example removing circulars in local papers, mailings, etc. that advertised sales. People walking into the store had no idea what was on sale and what wasn't.
A friend of mine walked in with hubby to buy a washer , which the online Sears site described as on sale. Was told at the store that the only way to get the sale price was to order the item online and have it shipped. They couldn't buy one in the store, despite it being in stock, for the same price. That's nuts.

It used to be a great store, quality goods at a good price and solid customer service. Then Sam died. The fam wanted superwalmart and I think that killed the brand. Plus ZERO customer service.

Funny thing is that emulator will run software much faster than the mainframes did back in the '80s and such.
I've thought about downloading some of them just to play, but it's a bit too complex for me, as I was never that familiar with it at the system/admin level.
But I would other enjoy it.

But, objectively speaking, the Target experience in my estimation, is a better shopping experience. Instead of rickety old carts, the carts are nice and smooth. They have more cashiers running, not like....2/20 that WM is notorious for. The bathrooms are cleaner.
I won't speak to the workers or the clientele or the "People of Walmart" reputation. I think most WMs in my neck of the woods are perfectly fine. But, I do see why people prefer Target to WM.

Heh. You've never worked in an R&D enviornment. Everything that you create belongs to the company. If it relates to your work, even things done on your own time.
One company I worked for wanted to even own manuscripts produced by employees, i.e., any copyrighted material. So, if you so much as wrote a poem, it belonged to them.
The R&D Dept. revolted. When the company passed around the paper work, we began to refer to it as , 'The surrender'. We en masse refused to sign.
Note that this was post-employment, so we could do so without much risk, as they were not about to toss the entire R&D group.
Anyhow, we bored a new asshole in the corporate lawyer when we met with him.

Target is run by SJW's who hate us.
WalMart was started by Sam and he was a genius. His heirs are morons and not the good kind. But I will shop there when I need something from a big box store.
Sears is just sad. So much potential, as noted above, but never realized. I still go there, even though at this point the nearest one is pretty far away. But it makes me sad.
FWIW I try and go to Home Depot whenever possible. Head of the company is pro-Trump and shopping there is a pleasant experience.
