Ireland’s government has fully recovered more than €14bn (£12.4bn) in disputed taxes and interest from Apple, which it will hold in an escrow fund pending its appeal against a European Union tax ruling. The European commission ruled in August 2016 that Apple had received unfair tax incentives from the Irish government. Both Apple and Dublin are appealing against the original ruling, saying the iPhone maker’s tax treatment was in line with Irish and EU law.
Elon Musk has called Vernon Unsworth, a British diver who advised on the Thailand cave rescue, a “pedo,” a “child rapist,” and a participant in sex tourism. Musk’s accusations remain unsubstantiated. This week, Unsworth filed a defamation lawsuit against Musk in federal court in Los Angeles, and his lawyers say he plans to file another legal action in London. That would be a strategic move. Unsworth is seeking more than $75,000 in damages and an injunction to prevent Musk from making future allegations. In a statement, Unsworth’s US-based attorney L. Lin Wood said, “Musk’s influence and wealth cannot convert his lies into truth or protect him from accountability for his wrongdoing in a court of law.”

THE DEPARTMENT OF Justice has reportedly opened a criminal fraud investigation into Tesla, after CEO Elon Musk announced on Twitter last month that he was considering taking the automaker private and had “funding secured” to do so. Musk later revealed that the funding required to go private at $420 per share, which he had believed would come mostly from Saudi Arabia's sovereign wealth fund, wasn’t exactly locked down. Seventeen days after that initial tweet, in late August, Tesla declared it would remain a public company after all—but the backtracking hasn’t stemmed the fallout from the incident. Bloomberg’s report of the probe sent Tesla shares down nearly 10 percent early this morning. (Stocks ultimately closed down 3 percent on Tuesday evening.)
The federal government can use the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) to spy on journalists. So said a pair of 2015 Justice Department memos, including one from then–Attorney General Eric Holder. FISA is controversial in itself. The act is supposed to be used to justify surveillance on foreign targets. But as Reason's Scott Shackford has explained, intelligence agencies often use it to secretly spy on American citizens, sometimes without a warrant.

Two Georgia women were arrested last week after officials found one of them selling marijuana edibles at a local church event, the Chatham-Savannah Counter Narcotics Team said in a Monday statement. On Friday, a local church was hosting an event for entrepreneurs, with vendors selling various items from booths. One of those vendors was Ebony Cooper, 28, of Savannah, who “was openly selling the edibles in addition to other items,” the CNT said, noting the items included marijuana-infused “cereal treats, brownies, and puddings.”
After his trip to South Carolina, he has since headed back into the storm zone to rescue people and animals from flood waters. In a recent video post, Alsup said he was headed towards Lumberton, North Carolina where a dam could possibly collapse.

Liberal media outlets are using Facebook and other social outlets as a dragnet for other women who might want to accuse embattled Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, proclaiming that "the truth will emerge."
Journalists and sources for ABC, the Washington Post, PBS and others are targeting sites like Facebook's members only Holton-Arms alumnae for women who might have met Kavanaugh while in high school, suggesting strongly and without evidence that many others were abused.
"Hi ladies, I'm Holton class of 1991 and an investigative producer/reporter for ABC National News. I would really appreciate any leads on Kavanaugh," posted Lauren Pearle. She added, "Hopefully, the truth will emerge."
Kavanaugh's accuser, Professor Christine Blasey Ford, went to Holton-Arms when she claims a drunken Kavanaugh molested her at a private party when he was a student in the early 1980s at Georgetown Prep less than 10 miles away from Holton-Arms. Kavanaugh has forcefully denied the charges, and his friends have also said they never saw him do anything wrong.
In another Facebook post, Holton-Arms alum Maggie Quiroga Mainor wrote, "If you have any connections from back in 1978 to 1982, please contact ASAP. I'm in touch w(i)th WaPo and other papers who want to support Dr. Ford."
A third Holton-Arms alum, Sabah Fatima, wrote on Facebook, "Hi! I'm looking for Cristina King Miranda. My very dear friend from childhood, Amna Nawaz, is at PBS newshour and would love to talk to her."
She added, "As the mob closes around Dr. Ford, as she goes into hiding, as her life changes forever, please do everything you can to ensure justice is done."
On her Facebook page, Nawaz posted an unsigned note from a former pal of Ford who said the alleged incident "was spoken about for days afterwards in school."
The Senate Judiciary Committee is hoping to get Kavanaugh and Ford at a Monday hearing to clear up the issue, but Ford is threatening to stay away unless the FBI investigates her charge and vague details. The committee and President Trump said the FBI isn't planning to investigate.
The social media dragnet comes just days after a woman helping Ford's lawyer emailed Kavanaugh's classmates also seeking dirt.
That memo on behalf of lawyer Debra Katz said, "Probably more so than Ms. Blasey Ford, many of us knew and hung out with Brett, Mark Judge, and their friends, we went to the same parties, to beach week, etc. It sounds like we likely had many more interactions with him than Ms. Blasey Ford. I have never met her, but the story that she is telling sounds plausible to me, and I believe her. Assuming that she is telling the truth, the odds are good that there may be other women who had a similar experience, and I am reaching out to you to help find out if this is the case."

I remember when I was working one day in a food lab and started putting the radio on the 50/60's channel (this was back in 06ish or so.) I noticed how much happier I seemed. 40s stuff is the same way.
Music does make a difference, and the tone of music has definitely changed.

The adults in this administration have shown they understand that it's not a deal, but the end or at least total emasculation of the regime is the only sane objective here. That regime will not be manipulated, deterred, contained, or bribed into not being an intolerable threat or nuisance. They are far craftier and more able than all the non-peer enemies we've faced since WWII - and they have as much American and close allied blood on their hands as any adversary outside the few conventional conflicts that have happened.
The hawt Nauert says the aims are to address the full spectrum of our problems with Iran. But that's the point - the nukyler stuff was a handy pretext for isolation and sanctions aimed at *ending the regime* - nukes and missiles in themselves were, and are, NOT the point (unlike with the Norks, where, since they've stepped back from their outlandish terrorist stunts of the 80s, nukes/missiles really ARE the sum total of our interest in their behavior).

My mother suddenly snapped to today, since the high school reunion is on Friday. I'm not even going to list all the drama here. Suffice it to say that I had to take her shoe shopping. She actually thought she was going to wear 4" heels. She couldn't even stand up straight in them.
It's the first time she's left the house in 6 weeks. Then I bathed her and gave her a nice dinner and she went to bed. Then she got up - twice. Hairdresser tomorrow.

Yes. Something to use as a lead in for this prayer request.
Started having a muscle spasm Sunday that is pressing on my left sciatic nerve.
Got it worked over Monday afternoon and will again tomorrow.
Goes back and forth from okay, I can live with that to owww, that hurts and can't hardly even stand up and screeching halt if walking.
As for the lead in,,, have a 1 to 4 pm gig Sunday afternoon at a place that has, among other attractions, a corn maze.
Three hours on a drum stool is not sounding to appealing what with where the leg is at right now.
Any and all prayers for healing appreciated.

Exactly. I went to a Catholic school. The nuns and my parents firmly believed in right and wrong. Also, people had more kids and so you were less likely to wallow in self pity. When there are five or six kids in your family, you know that you aren't the center of the universe, so you accept normal disappointment as part of life.

I don't know about Morrison or Walsh, but Dylan has consistently put on good shows in recent years. He's not talkative, but I'd say playing good music is respectful of the audience.
I don't think discouraging cameras and cell phones is unreasonable at all. I pay money to listen to Dylan, not some jackass next to me yakking away to his friend about the concert.

I generally read/comment from three locations. One has had me blocked from commenting for a couple years. I don't think I actually did anything wrong. (that I know of) But, it really just saves me the trouble of commenting (and you guys of reading/skipping) and I rarely have anything important to say,. If I've got a super-awesome comment brewing, I just remote into one of the other locations and post it. They never end up actually super-awesome in retrospect, anyway.

Couldn't understand a damn word, and its a nice theater with great acoustics. Dylan is an acquired taste. You either like him or you don't. His band was tight. And it was an enjoyable evening with Mrs. MH and the mid-kid who loves Dylan.

I'm praying for you. I cared for my mother and father who were in their 90's.However, they had assets so that I could hire supportive help. It's tough enough doing it for people who were loving and supportive. Don't let her take over your life. Sometimes an assisted living home is the best thing.
I had a recently deceased maiden aunt who ended up in an assisted living home. She didn't want to go at first, but once she got there she liked it. They have activities, she received attention, and there were other people for her to socialize with.

Locke has one big advantage over Marx. Nobody ever made a smart phone by just existing. But all smart phones were made by sweat. Thus Locke's base currency is sweat and labor and Marx's is being a warm body--the person is the unit of currency. And one actually can produce distributable goods, while the other at base only consumes.

Just for shits and grins, I tried working out the actual gravitational force a 100-kilogram astronaut would experience on the surface of Ryugu, assuming that asteroid was a 1 km sphere of rock with 5 times the density of water. Came out to 0.35 Newton, which is indeed very little. But maybe I dropped a power of 10 someplace...

Just threw Liz outside and what I heard made me flip on the rest of the floods and walk on out.
We have coyotes in the neighborhood and they're running REAL close. Not unusual to hear them, the population is robust but you never hear them a block away, as I just did.
Fortunately my yard is fenced, as are the majority. Still made me unholster. Earlier in the year there was a lady attacked by one that was found to be rabid.

I'm not that impressed with Atwood as a writer, in the first place. But these craze-heads take a specific nightmarish story, which had I guess some motivation in the framing of the story, and then act like the slightest move right will end up in the very *contrived* condition of the Handmaid's Tale.

They simply demand what is the "right" way to construe the corner case of a proto-life existing within another life. And they demand that the state enforce their dogmatic view that the outer life that gave a type of consent decide whether the inner life is a life at all. And they consider anything counter to the state dogmatism a dogma within itself.
However, we have a dogma of rights. No one can prove "rights exist". They are things we *attribute*. We may attribute them because we recognize, per Locke, their origin in the Will of God/Creator, which makes the inviolable by Man--or its something that society out of its good will attributes to its member (but then they are not inviolable--and we're seeing this more and more these days).
Locke has a very logical way to cascade rights. He reasons that because God forbids his claim for disposing of himself--and demands that he live for better or worse, that then no one can deprive him of that right (unless he enters a "state of war" against the law). And from his right to his life as an expression of God's Will, he deduces the right to property, and the right to self-defense....

Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley on Wednesday unloaded a torrent of criticism on Sen. Dianne Feinstein for her handling of the sexual assault accusations against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, telling the ranking Democrat on the committee, "I cannot overstate how disappointed I am."
Saying Feinstein "chose to sit on the allegations until a politically opportune moment," Grassley demanded she immediately turn over an unredacted copy of the letter from Kavanaugh's accuser, Christine Blasey Ford, that Feinstein received July 30.
Feinstein, D-Calif., shared the letter with federal authorities and other senators only last week, days before a key Judiciary Committee vote on Kavanaugh's confirmation, after a leak about the letter was published in The Intercept. Republicans have accused Democrats of orchestrating that leak.
Grassley, R-Iowa, who called the document a "significant piece of evidence in Judge Kavanaugh's confirmation process," said that despite multiple requests, he still has access only to a redacted copy of the letter included in supplemental background materials provided by the FBI to a select group of senators.
He asserted that he needs the full version of the document in order to "prepare for Monday's hearings" into the allegations against Kavanaugh. Ford's lawyers strongly suggested in a letter late Tuesday that she won't appear at the hearing until the FBI conducts a "full investigation" into her claims...
Also on Wednesday, Grassley sent two other letters -- one to Ford's attorneys urging her to appear at Monday's scheduled hearing into her allegations, and another scathing missive to Senate Judiciary Committee Democrats.

A House Democrat called on his colleagues Wednesday to "rise up" if Republican senators push forward with Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh's confirmation without hearing from his sexual assault accuser, Christine Blasey Ford.
"For the men and women of the House of Representatives, we must rise up in disgust and anger and make certain that our voice is clear," Rep. John Garamendi, D-Calif., said during an interview with CNN. "Get the facts out. Give this woman the benefit of the doubt. Don't treat her as so many women have been treated time after time in courtroom after courtroom."
Only the Senate has advise and consent responsibilities under the Constitution, rendering the House powerless to express any concerns over nominees named by the president for certain administration positions.
Instead, Garamendi suggested that he and other House lawmakers march over to the Senate because Kavanaugh's nomination was a "defining moment in the #MeToo movement."
Ford publicly accused Kavanaugh Sunday of drunkenly forcing himself on her during a high school house party in the 1980s when she was 15 and he was 17. Kavanaugh has "categorically and unequivocally" denied the claim.
Kavanaugh is scheduled to answer questions about the alleged incident on Monday during a public session of the Senate Judiciary Committee. Ford does not want to testify in front of the panel until the FBI has investigated her accusation.
President Trump on Wednesday described Kavanaugh as an "an outstanding man," saying it was "very hard" for him "to imagine that anything happened."
Garamendi dismissed Trump's defense of Kavanaugh, given the president's "long history of facing this precise issue."
"He cannot and should not duck his responsibility for a full and fair investigation of the allegations that have been made by professor Ford," Garamendi told CNN of Trump.

I'm surprised they just haven't re-written the letter to exculp their own dirty fingerprints in it all. It's certainly not above their "morals" to do so.
And I believe it took ChiDi and the cohorts who sprang into action from July to now to release this letter so they had time to scrub this woman's entire social media history from the intertubes.

The numbers I have seen show a pattern of gay priest/seminarian, gay priest/parishioner, straight priest/parishioner. Relationships outside of the church group - ie the weird guy at the park - aren't tracked. The straight priest - female parishioner had more underage problems than the gay stuff. Particularly in the Hispanic community. (and I hate to say this as folks who have been here a while know me as an abject homophobe.)
