Video: Meet the World's First Domesticated, Semi-Doglike Foxes

A Russian scientist wanted to prove, back in the 1980s, that the evolution from wolf to dog was genetic and caused by selective breeding by man. To prove this, he bred foxes for decades, selecting for only one trait: friendliness towards humans (or at least lack of fear of humans).

Foxes that were fearful of humans or unfriendly towards them were not permitted to breed. (To be honest, given that this was done by Russians and scientists, neither group having excess empathy for lab animals, I assume "not permitted to breed" really means "not permitted to live.")

But the foxes that seemed warmer towards humans were allowed to breed. And over decades and many generations, they slowly produced more dog-like foxes.

The video below shows a San Diego couple who pay up to $9000 for the domesticated foxes and the import fees for exotic animals, and have about eight of them. They say the foxes are not housebroken at all, and not nearly as sweet-natured as dogs; but the video points out, too, that these were lab animals, bred and tested and then allowed to breed if they were sufficiently friendly, but not cared for as a master would care for his dog.

So, genetically they might be friendly foxes, but they haven't been socialized to be as friendly as dogs. Most of their early lives were spent in kennels and cages.

Who knows, maybe the next generation of these San Diego foxes, properly brought up by humans from puppyhood, might be more like dogs.

It's kind of interesting.

The TL;DR version is: No, domesticated foxes are no threat whatsoever to become Man's New Best Friend. While they're tame and unafraid of people, they're also pretty aloof. And who knows, maybe they're not housebreakable.

Still, they're kinda cute.

Video below, print article here.

If you want to dive right into the Road Test -- wild foxes vs. domesticated foxes as far as friendliness towards humans -- skip to 4:54 and watch for about 30 seconds.

51 Another problem is that Foxes are not pack animals. They are solo predators/omnivores.

They don't have the same need for a "community" nor do they acquire the body language that occurs in a pack.

They've done to some foxes like what was done to some small breeds of cats. They too are not pack animals which is why they seem so standoffish.

Can't see much use for a friendly fox.

153 So, here's an interesting slash terrifying thought that I'd been having lately, and this post is actually relevant.

A lot of what we as conservative base our political ideology on is he premise that there is such a thing as human nature, and that progressive ideology ignores that fact to it's detriment.

So how long would it take to change human nature?

We know it's clearly possible to change the nature of other animals. If we're doing it consciously, we can make significant changes in what... 10 generations?

It doesn't seem to be a stretch to assume that the dangerous progressive policies might also change human nature as well (albeit probably less quickly than a scientist can change a fox's).

Where I live in the SF Bay Area, it's totally illegal to touch, mess with or interfere with any wild animals -- even if they've invaded your house. My neighbor had a family of skunks that somehow found a loose board and moved into his basement. He was informed by the city that he was not allowed to evict them, lest he face a series fine. They told him to "wait it out" until they decided to leave on their own accord.

His solution was to "remodel" his back stairs, and -- oops! -- by "accident" the workmen removed the skunk nest and evicted the skunks.

Ridiculous laws require ridiculous disobeying.

I met a porcupine in the bush once. I was carrying an axe, because I was making a cut line and blazing trees. So I held the head of the axe in my hand, reached my arm out full length, and used the axe handle to gently bump Mr. Porcupine on the nose. Wham! He whirled around in a split second, and smacked the axe handle so hard with his tail that it flew out of my hand and landed several yards away.

Having proved his point, he then waddled away.

207 Selecting for one trait of behavior resulted in many changes, like mottled coats, floppy ears, changes in the jaw.

https://tinyurl.com/zzohk73

"The result of this breeding program conducted over more than 40 generations of silver foxes was a group of friendly, domesticated foxes. These domesticated foxes, which were bred on the basis of a single selection criteria, displayed behavioral, physiological, and anatomical characteristics that were not found in the wild population, or were found in wild foxes but with much lower frequency. One of the reasons that these findings were so compelling was that the criterion used to determine whether an individual fox would be allowed to breed was simply how they reacted upon the approach of a human. Would they back away, hissing and snarling, and try to bite the experimenter? Or would they approach the human and attempt to interact?

The domesticated foxes were more eager to hang out with humans, whimpered to attract attention, and sniffed and licked their caretakers. They wagged their tails when they were happy or excited...

Further, their fear response to new people or objects was reduced, and they were more eager to explore new situations. Many of the domesticated foxes had floppy ears, short or curly tails, extended reproductive seasons, changes in fur coloration, and changes in the shape of their skulls, jaws, and teeth. They also lost their 'musky fox smell.' "

But the foxes were the worst. They were everywhere. They breed like bunnies and eat more trash than bears. And they like to eat cats, too.

Having a cat, I didn't want them around. My illegal alien neighbors couldn't understand when I asked if it would be ok for me to eliminate the ones around our shared driveway, or if they would call cops. 318 Just wanted to say that the actual story is even more fascinating than this quick video, which actually mischaracterizes some of the most pertinent details.

The Soviets weren't necessarily out to prove that friendliness/tameness were genetically based. The only selection criterion for allowing the fox to breed was: did it run away from humans?

And, though they have now bred for many generations, the actual changes in the foxes happened very quickly, after less than 2 dozen generations. The Soviets basically proved that by selecting only for friendliness, early-modern humans could have easily domesticated wolves in less than the average adult human's lifespan!

On top of that, what's crazy is that the phenotypical changes in the foxes arose without selecting for them. Friendliness remained the only criterion, and the physical changes just came as part of the package. Turns out that the "friendliness factor" was a good measure of the foxes' adrenaline levels, and genetically low adrenaline levels can cause some interesting physical changes in young canids.

Makes you wonder if humans basically self-domesticated themselves from apes in a similar process! The friendly proto-humans got along and bred with each other bringing us to modern Homo Sapiens.

353 When I was a kid in Suburban Chicago the fox problem had gotten so bad that they were paying hunters $5/fox to go in the forest preserves and kill them. Made about $20 one winter that way. This was before Chicago went bugfuck crazy about guns.

Now that you mention that I think that this must have been the documentary I had seen. I think the documentary was about dog breeding, generally, but included this Russian fox breeding experiment as a side note. I saw it about five years ago, I think.

369 Funny story from synagogue: A guy a couple rows up had his young (5 or 6) daughter with him, and she kept giving out and sitting down during the standing parts. What dad didn't notice was, that while he was standing there praying, she was gently and meticulously untying the knots on his talis.

Somebody got spanked after services, today.

There is a disturbing Pandora's box out there.

Inside it is the research on the genetic influence on behavioral, socialization, and especially intelligence.

It has frightening implications and I recommend people avoid looking into because its horrific and depressing.

Saw something similar, but the main focus was wolves (even after generations were not domesticated). The fox experiments were just a side note, but ultimately similar result.

Posted by: Mutnodjmet at September 20, 2018 12:20 AM (sPJyv)

381 There are plenty of youtube videos where people keep fur-farm rescues and other perfectly ordinary foxes as pets.

Apparently the main challenge to keeping them as pets is the smell (they have some sort of scent-glands) and their destructive digging tendencies. Absent these two barriers, it's hard to see why they wouldn't be as popular as cats and dogs. They are absurdly cute animals (when they aren't digging a hole to china in the backyard.)

Their personalities seem varied, and their relationship to humans seem, like pretty much any other higher mammal, to be a function of their experiences with humans.

I don't understand the insistence that people only own and care for as pets animals that have always been owned as pets. No deviation allowed! Our relationship with dogs and cats started somewhere! And it doesn't really seem to require thousands of years of tweaking to establish a friendly relationship with an animal.
