So, they're admitting that they are putting employees in harm's way by overworking and exhausting them in a dangerous environment.

Surely there are OSHA regulations against this.

21 I heard he was standing like that so the words spoken in the microphone weren't drowned out with the wind.

For anyone who has tried to light a cigarette in a big wind, you understand this theory.

Posted by: LeftCoast Dawg at September 17, 2018 12:49 PM (UsCnO)

22 The wet grass defense is stupid. The reporter only had to step 1.5 feet to his left to get off the wet grass and onto the pavement.

Additionally, if you look at the blowing vegetation, it's blowing right to left. The "reporter" is pretending to lean into the wind, but they're leaning the wrong way to do that.

Posted by: bonhomme at September 17, 2018 12:49 PM (9qZ3S)

23 So my recently indicted Congressman has just decided to stay on the ballot. This is probably a good thing as name recognition might be enough to pull him through. And, considering I'm prepared to vote for Zombie Dahmer if he has an "R" next to his name, my only question becomes how a vacancy is filled if he needs to leave the seat.

Posted by: I'm the Honey Badger, BITCH! at September 17, 2018 12:50 PM (iEoIm)

40 Posted this on previous threading...

So, Vic - how's the weather?

ms mouse has some distant relatives in the Charlotte area (Matthew, IIRC) and was chatting w/some over the weekend. Said rainy, but no problems. So this AM we're watching the alphabet networks, she's reading some online newz, and an official twatwaffle is blabbering on about eastern NC being "impassable" and worse.

So, she picks up her phone and calls - said relative is on their way to visit/help out another extended family member, and they're on I 95, which we just watched as being impassable. Pics were sent, and the road is clear, open, sunny, and has some traffic.

So the issue is - has weather reporting succumbed fully to the Gell Mann amnesia effect? Short of calling family/friends/whoever in a given area, how can one reasonably comprehend what's happening?

Feh.

102 I don't know as that's so much a defense as a report: here's what they said. The problem is that Stelter is so carefully neutral and accurate rather than his usual tilt that it looks defensive. He's doing his proper job here, which he rarely does.

But the attempts to dramatize stuff for "good TV" is the death of reporting. I remember all too well NBC blowing up a pickup truck with fireworks in the 1980s.

Will she show up in the next 2 days in the Senate? She has the time because she spent the last few days, finishing wiping her social media accounts of all content and history before anyone could look it up. So she has time now. Of course, if this "incident" has so affected her in the last 35+ years, she should be desperately wanting to testify and seek the tables to finally turn.

I compare this woman to the response of the Olympic athletes who were abused by that doctor.

Will the Skank show up to the Senate? I doubt it.

Yeah there's nothing credible about her tweet at all. Zero. She claims something took place, with vague details, and the two guys she accuses say nothing of the sort happened. There's no evidence, and she sat on the story for decades, even through the federal judicial nomination, and now it suddenly comes up?

And the more we know about this woman the more we find out she's a SJW "resistance" type?

It's far more serious and insidious than that. They started concentrating on middle aged women digging up "repressed memories" of their fathers having raped them daily, at home, from the time they were 8 months old until they were 12 years old ... but they totally forgot, until now, and all of a sudden they can remember every little detail from when they were 1 year old ... Serious shit that fvcked up a lot of families that were unlucky enough to have unstable daughters who got willingly or unwillingly got roped into this stuff.

I may be missing the question bc tlr, but if you plot the intensity and frequency of storms and other natural events, it's amazing how linear the relationships can be.

I don't recall if rain events are literally linear or some kind of exponential, but it's pretty easy to predict likely maximum return for a given period, or on the other hand the likelihood of a given size event in a year's time.

The judgement part of setting building codes is what level of return is an acceptable risk. It boils down to putting an actual dollar value on human life which is a ticklish thing to do.

The fact this came up in marriage counseling with hubby makes me think she was looking to excuse some of her own behavior or get his attention/sympathy.

As a therapist, I think she would have had to have undergone regular therapy herself before getting her license. This apparently was never "revealed" during any of those sessions....

There's a super-sketchy guy at my church who has an official "diagnosis" of being the victim of satanic rituals. The "psychologist" who gave him his diagnosis did some sort of repressed memory pseudo-science garbage to get him to remember.

In reality he's just a screwed up guy who does a lot of drugs to forget how much of a screwup he is.

He spends the majority of his time trying to get government services because he can't work due to the trauma of being the victim of satanic ritual. The rest of the time he bothers church leadership trying to get freebies from the church. Oh, and drugs. He fills a lot of time with that.

356 It is both a misunderstanding of statistics but also a misuse of statistics in describing an event in which are real known history is a short period.
Posted by: SH at September

...

If by this you mean the "500 year" label being thrown about loosely. I agree. But setting the predicted magnitude of what that event would be is pretty easy statistics.

Of interest, maybe; the wind speeds reported on news for tornadoes are always crap.

Wind storm testing was done on model buildings in wind tunnels, and the damage observed at various wind speeds.

We set the magnitude of a tornado in the wild by comparing damage to that observed in the lab.

It's very much a matter of judgement, and depends entirely that the buildings in the actual tornado were constructed in the same manner and quality as the test buildings.

At any rate. Once someone says "it's an F 3" then the bubble heads on TV look up the table and say the "wind speeds were reprted as ...". No one measures this wind speeds, but the general public is certainly understand the impression that we do.

_______________________

Some people may have forgotten, but during the 1980's or 90's, Roseanne Barr was convinced that her parents had sexually abused her for years when she was a kid. She went on a bunch of talk shows and spoke about it, she was on the cover of People magazine as an "incest" survivor, and she wrote about it too. She gave explicit details, saying things like that her father had forced her to play with his penis, etc. Her parents, and her siblings, strenuously denied Barr's claims, and even took and passed polygraphs.

Years later, in the early 2000's, Barr said the sexual abuse never happened. Unfortunately, by the time she admitted that, her father had already died. Barr blamed the false memories on the variety of psychiatric drugs she'd been taking at the time she made the accusations.

Posted by: rickb223 at September 17, 2018 01:25 PM (Kq2SQ)

We are "overdue" for a major eruption of Mt. Rainier based on study of geological history (500-1000 years, on average). We didn't keep "records" during that time in the way we think of records and measurements now.

The point is that past history is not a predictor of future events. A statistical average frequency of 500 years completely allows for back to back 500 year events, though the probability may not be as high as say a larger time separation on the order of the average frequency.

A 500-year flood has a 0.2% chance of being met or exceeded every year. This is the definition. A 100-year flood has a 1.0% chance of being met or exceeded every year. This is how the flood events are calculated.

The names are misleading. It's all about risk and how much risk the government is willing to accept regarding flood insurance and infrastructure construction. For example, when a bridge is designed to meet 100-year floods without overtopping, this means that the government is willing to bet that the bridge will not have to be replaced unless a +100-year storm occurs. Which means that they have a 1.0% chance of having to replace it every year.

If I get this right, he was one of the guys who swooped into post-Soviet Russia and got rich off of some dirty deals that were illegal in Russia...but such laws were generally not enforced.

He was an early ally of Putin.

By the mid 2000s they weren't on good terms and Putin went after him for the laws that Browder almost certainly did break (even if they had generally not been enforced) .

At this point Browder became an anti-Putin crusader and managed to get the Russia prosecution of him declared to be political in Europe and the US - claiming that Putin was coming after him because Putin is (obviously) a corrupt SOB.

A statistical average frequency of 500 years completely allows for back to back 500 year events, though the probability may not be as high as say a larger time separation on the order of the average frequency.

...

If you look at the actual data plotted out, it's amazing how steady the relationship appears to be.

The prediction models have a pretty good basis in reality, at least for wind and rain events. Earthquakes do too, and I would guess volcanic eruptions but we don't design buildings for those do I don't know anything about them.

The difference in my mind is that we understand the build up of forces over time for earthquake and volcanoes, and have some ability to (try anyway) to measure that strain building up.

So it's probably logical to talk about "being due" for an earthquake or volcanoe, but nonsense to talk like that about a tornado or flood.

Again, it depends on what No means, were Flake to flip. The committee may report the nomination to the Senate favorably, unfavorably, or without recommendation, or it may choose to take no action at all.

If Flake flips to Nay, it probably means Unfavorable Report to the full Senate. McConnell can put it on the calendar for Executive Session, with unanimous consent, or a vote of 50+1. Maybe even just by himself but it has to wait a day, I think.

If the committee chooses the no action recourse, any Senator can use a discharge petition to get it out of the committee's jurisdiction. That may be fillibusterable but McConnell could take that to the Parliamentarian since it would sort of eviscerate the previous unconstitutionality ruling of filibusters on Federal Judges.

Really, it's in McConnell's hands as long as he has the 50%+1 of Senators present.

If you're ever needing a jolt of righteous anger to feel truly alive, read up on the satanic ritual abuse (SRA) hoax propigated in the 80s and early 90s. Mike Warnke was ultimately exposed by Cornerstone magazine in 1982. Lauren Stratford was the other charletan.

477 I don't think it is the therapist in this case who is wacked... all he/she did was write down this woman's account of 4 unnamed men assaulting her.

Yeah? Is she doing "Repressed" Memory Therapy? Is she guiding the women's memorys?

478 McConnell will not bring a losing vote to the floor. What Flake just
did was ensure that every wavering Dem in a Red state can now vote
against Kav with no blow-back. He all but publicly declared Kavanaugh a
sexual predator. And the fact that Flake was elected as a Republican
will be given weight by the media.

Posted by: Rusty Nail at September 17, 2018 01:43 PM (SN4NF)

Flake did not ensure that.

It would be cooler if it was hypnosis.

I wouldn't be surprised if they were both whacked, frankly. Maybe the accuser sought out a therapist who would be sympathetic to this sort of thing.

I just read the Wiki entry on the McMartin case, and the lead interviewer of the kids was a former lobbyist for NOW, and pretty obviously in the bag for this sort of thing. The whole picture became a lot clearer: the interviewer probably had an agenda from the get-go.

Nor did Flake announce he was a no vote.

Ha.

So you think McConnell isn't part of the deep state?

I hope you are right. Its only a hope, not confidence.

485 All that matters is what do the Red Chinese want McConnell to do.

"This essay was adapted from the afterword of the paperback edition of What Happened, which will be published on September 18."

The above note says it all. Some staffers methodically assembled every single whopper about Trump that the Left has created, and put HRC's name on it. That The Atlantic would publish it is further evidence of the magazine's irrelevance.
