54 Bander, the guy on the right is Peter, who is fleeing Rome, where he has been persecuted. Jesus appears to Peter (this is post-Resurrection) and Peter asks him where he is going. Jesus tells Peter he is going back to Rome, to be crucified again.

Peter realizes that Christ is telling him to return to Rome and face his persecutors. Which he does, and then he is martyred.

This is a lovely painting, CBD, and one which is meaningful to me. Thank you.

76 Quo vadis? is a Latin phrase meaning
"Where are you going?" The modern usage of the phrase refers to a
Christian tradition regarding Saint Peter. According to the apocryphal
Acts of Peter (Vercelli Acts XXXV), Peter is fleeing from likely
crucifixion in Rome at the hands of the government, and along the road
outside the city he meets the risen Jesus.

This is an allegory of the response to Jesus' words, "take up thy cross and follow me." I tend to think of the other guy as Peter, who berated Jesus when He told the disciples about his coming crucifixion and resurrection. As for the keys, well, Peter was supposed to have The Keys of the Kingdom, right? (There's your symbolism --) But if they didn't have pockets in those days, anybody with any kind of keys would have to wear them hanging on his belt.

Bander, the guy on the right is Peter, who is fleeing Rome, where he has
been persecuted. Jesus appears to Peter (this is post-Resurrection)
and Peter asks him where he is going. Jesus tells Peter he is going
back to Rome, to be crucified again.

Peter realizes that Christ is telling him to return to Rome and face his persecutors. Which he does, and then he is martyred.

This is a lovely painting, CBD, and one which is meaningful to me. Thank you.

The tradition from the early church is that Peter was in prison for being a Christian and was spirited out by his friends, but then he met the risen Jesus on the road and went back. The Gospel of John records that Jesus' prediction of what will happen to Peter (John 21:18-19) legend also is that at the time of his death perhaps 34 A.D. he requested to be crucified upside down because he felt unworthy to die in the same manner as Jesus.

Posted by: FenelonSpoke at September 18, 2018 09:57 AM (AllCR)

180 Peter is fleeing Rome. He is afraid for his life. Jesus is coming the other way. Peter says Quo vadis, where are you going? Jesus says "to Rome, to be crucified again."

Peter decides that he cannot disappoint the Lord again. He turns around and goes back to Rome to be crucified, upside-down.

I understood the tradition is that Peter died during Nero's reign, and Nero was emperor from something like 54 to 69 AD. Peter would probably have been close to 60 years old if not more by then.

I've always heard it was Clare Boothe Luce (the wife of the guy who founded Time) clashing with Dottie. A lot of the stories about Miss Parker have grown in the telling. She is supposed to have gone to an AA meeting, and when asked if she would join, said, "Certainly not. They want me to stop now!"

Trouble is, no date is ever given for that story, but it's always placed early in the Depression . . . and AA wasn't founded until 1935.

Good long-guns with plenty of cheap ammunition makes a lot of shit, like hanging people on crosses, just not practical. Too easy for the other side to simply say No - lets fight this one out. Which I'm pretty sure is why those in Power are so damned keen on controlling said long-guns.

No. The dome was the whole point of the building -- Hadrian and his "pumpkin" domes as Apollodorus sneered. There is a dome in the picture, it's just shallower than in reality. This guy was Eye-talian, so it should be a matter of pride to get it right. The rendering could be acting merely as a place marker, however, to let the viewer know we're in Rome, and because it's in the distant background - pfft.

It's details like that that make me wonder whether this was made to pay the bills.

There were all sorts of texts and gospels floating around confusing things.

Council of Nicea was convened in 325 AD to sort things out. You have to believe they were inspired by God so that the things they chose were written by God.

Some of the stuff was ruled right out, including the things we now call the Gnostic gospels. Others were sort of halfway out, the Apocrypha.

Catholics held on to the Apacrypha as good enough stories but not binding law, Protestants dropped them like a crazy ex-girlfriend.

360 Ford (I mean the Democrats) can delay her testifying to the Committee for a long time. All it takes is letters from Ford's therapist stating that it would be emotionally harmful for Ford to discuss this painful event with persons other than her family and the therapist.

Of course, that ruse goes out the window if Ford gives interviews to MFM outlets. Something she'll do eventually.

The Dems can play the timing like a fiddle, working to leave Kavanaugh twisting in the wind as long as possible.

I think it's because this is a conservative / strict Constitutionalist replacing Kennedy - who was known to wobble quite a bit. Even though (IIRC) Kennedy had praise for Kavanaugh, Ds know this really tilts the court. Delay and have a more Kennedy-esque replacement is their goal.

Given RBG is a dead-yoga-crossfit-walking-grandma, and will be replaced by Amy Barret, the Ds realize that this is their last chance to really have a chance to have a say in the Court's makeup. Plus, it gets the base fired up re: Ds in red states that Trump carried.and to try and demonstrate their fighting The Man.

Finally, great popcorn theatre will be if RBG croaks in early 2020 and the Rs have a sizeable lead in the Senate. Does Trump get to name a replacement? See 2016.

No. Just no. There's so much wrong with this one it's hard to know where to start. Christ wasn't Charles Atlas nor did he make that walk alone. The facial expressions are over-wrought. There's no way Christ could have carried the cross he was crucified upon in that manner.

I think this backfires. I think many view this as what it is, but many more will be turned off with the whole "accused facing their accuser" thingy. It does give weight to the theory that she wanted to remain anonymous and DiFi held letter, but the hiring of an attorney and the taking of a polygraph kinda shoots that angle to hell.

That's been the whole reason thru out their marriage. Therapy just helps her at that moment which is good and from her perspective, reading student reviews and other info, she can make something positive out of that one evening.

I was listening to Breitbart the other night on Sirius and there was a guest on a show, who was a female black conservative. She said something that struck a chord. She said that white males shouldn't be shocked that they are now the target of the left, as the left will first try out their ideology to take out a group by targeting a minority group. Her example was the easy target of black males, particularly sports figures, by the lefts proclamation that they were all "toxic masculinity" , the lefts attack on the sport of football, the use of black males to convince them that the police were targeting them and they needed to stand up to them( hence the kneeling), etc.
She said that with the success of that attack, they have now moved that on to white males, a much larger group, but with the example set by stereotyping black males, they are able to be successful targeting whites.
She concluded with warning everyone to watch out for any leftist targeting of any small group as it is just a precursor for using it in the general population.

-----------
Howard McNear, OTOH:

"He enlisted as a private in the United States Army Air Corps on November 17, 1942, during World War II.[6] He created the role of Doc Charles Adams in CBS Radio's Gunsmoke (1952–1961).[7] McNear was under contract to CBS for many years and was featured in many of the network's radio and TV programs. From 1955 to 1960 he appeared frequently, in various roles, in the popular radio detective series Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar.[8] McNear made his film debut in an uncredited role in the 1951 sci-fi film The Day The Earth Stood Still as a boarding house resident along with the alien visitor Klaatu, and the 1953 film Escape from Fort Bravo. In a 1958 episode of Leave it to Beaver, McNear made his first TV appearance as a barber named "Andy", who gave Wally his first shave. Over the course of his career, he would appear in over one hundred film and television guest spots. In 1959, McNear portrayed Dr. Dompierre in the film Anatomy of a Murder who testified about collecting evidence of a rape.

And...

" During the show's run, he suffered a stroke that rendered the left side of his body nearly paralyzed.[9] He left the series for nearly a year and a half to recover. Andy Griffith asked McNear to return to the series, to which McNear agreed despite being unable to walk or stand, and the production crew accommodated him accordingly, as Floyd was usually seen onscreen either seated, or standing with support.[4] Many scenes were shot with him sitting on a bench outside the barber shop, as opposed to actively trimming hair as before. In most of his post-stroke scenes, McNear's left hand would be holding a newspaper or resting in his lap, while he moved his right arm and hand as he spoke his lines."

518 She's going thru / has gone thru menopause. They've never really had a
close, intimate marriage and now she's even "colder." She brings this up
and it did happen, just with another set of boys. That's been the whole
reason thru out their marriage. Therapy just helps her at that moment
which is good and from her perspective, reading student reviews and
other info, she can make something positive out of that one evening.

I don't think it happened at all. I think she was looking for an excuse for whatever failings landed her in couple's therapy. Like the mythical "black men" who "kidnapped" Susan Smith's children.

As a woman, I am truly disgusted by this and many other #metoo exaggerations and outright lies.

519 Sure, he swings a 39 oz. 36 inch cruciform bat and has 42 home runs this year, but even Jesus can't hit 97 mph in above the hands.

Actually this is his goalie stick. Jesus saves.

520 494 Yeah. The real Griffith was a philanderer,

Yes, I believe he was more like Larry "Lonesome" Rhodes (A Face In The Crowd", 1957) than Andy Taylor.

522 When I called to protest, I was informed that we got some kind of 'Green Power Certificates' and that green power is good and brown power is bad.

I asked if I could trade the certificates like Pokemon cards or SandH Green Stamps and I was told they are just benchmarks.

Somebody is making bank on this and it's not me.

------------

I suspect that the 'Green power' thing is mandated. I.e., GP *must* buy some portion of 'Green' power, and they are trying to make best of it publicity-wise.

523 > Big Don? Why do you think we called him "The Incredible Mr. Limpet"?!!

524 Now, some allegations have been lodged against Balrog of Morgoth, I know that, and they may indeed be serious, but on the other hand, he has made some very credible accusations of his own against the Valar, and we owe it to our conservative principles to undertake a full and complete investigation into both the charges and countercharges, and we must necessarily delay any actions on our part of any kind until these investigations are completed to everyone's satisfaction.

526 > Late 70s Nastassja Kinski came close. Mid-50s Sophia Loren...

Kinski hit the wall early and hard.

Loren remained highly bangable until well into her senior citizen days.

530 Didn't Ace do a post a year or so ago, showing what it meant (and how to wrap the olden-times garment) to "gird your loins" ??

So, in this painting, has Jesus girded his loins?
