Venimus, vidimus, Deus vicit!

“We came, we saw, God conquered.”

This week saw the 17th anniversary of 9/11. Ever wonder why the hijackers chose that date? Well, in 1697 that date saw the Battle of Zenta, which crushed Turkish dreams of subjugating Christendom once and for all, but before that, in 1683, Spetember 11th marked the beginning of the Battle at the Gates of Vienna, the final push to clear the city and let the Ottoman Turks loose to sack Europe at will. It is not an exaggeration to say that had Vienna fallen, Rome would have been next and Christianity today might be relegated to the fringes of a backwater world. Instead, at their moment of triumph, the tide finally turned.

VIENNA.jpg

(More below the cut)

The Turks laid siege to Vienna in July of 1683. Lacking enough true siege cannons to reduce the city's defenses, they dug a series of parallel trenches surrounding the city, each one closer to the walls than the last. From these trenches they had placed gunpowder beneath the walls of the city, and by Sept 11 had blown them down in a significant number of places. On the 11th, the Turks struck! They surged out of their trenches, screaming like demons from hell. By a major stroke of fortune, the Viennese had detected the latest tunnels under their works and had managed to disarm the explosives. Desperately the Hapsburg army fought to keep the invaders out of the city, the Holy Roman Army holding the left flank, fighting man to man. All day the fighting raged, and it resumed on the 12th. By mid-afternoon both sides were exhausted, though it looked like the Turks would finally carry the day. At 4:00, however, a group of men appeared on the right flank of the Christian lines. Emerging from the forest were King Sobieski of Poland and his heavy lancers. Hesitating for a moment at the crest of a hill to form ranks, down they charged, King Sobieski at the forefront, straight into the Turkish lines!

POLISH WINGED HUSSARS!

Winged Hussars.jpg

20,000 men strong, it is still the largest cavalry charge in history. The Ottoman Turks were impaled upon the lances and crushed under the hooves of the King Sobieski and his men, and Christendom was saved. So if anyone ever asks “Why Sept 11th?”, now you know. The hijackers wanted a symbolic date, this time they were sure that they were striking a blow to bring down the West, and getting revenge for the defeat of the Turks 318 years earlier. Ask Osama, he'll tell you. Oh, wait, you can't. He's deader that Kara Mustafa Pasha (The Turkish commander at Vienna, he was executed by his men for having failed to take the city).

Now, what have we got that's more typical ONT fare?

Locally, the city does a smoke test of the sewers to find leaks, broken pipes and people who channel their down-spouts into the sewer system.
When that happens, everyone who channels their down-spouts into the sewers plugs their down-spouts.

It would be a tragedy if the smoke test made everyone plug everything up so the natural gas would collect to explosive levels

When I was 18 my childhood dog was put to sleep when I was at work - I had a summer 2nd shift job in a restaurant. My dad didn't tell me he was taking her to the vet and I was really upset when I got home because I never had a chance to say goodbye to her.

I had a girl friend worked in a bio lab where they processed and purified immunoglobulin protiens (the stuff that make you react to foriegn proteins and allergens) as a tech, and she mentioned that the owner had bought his kids a dog and named it "Iggy", or as they later found out, IG.
He was using the dog to pull out blood components to work on, and figured that was the best of both worlds.
To be fair, when he went in to his own MD for physical and bloodwork he asked for a couple of his own blood to take home to work on.

Nice enough guy, but he made dental technicians look compassionate.

145 I used to just hand over my pets to the vet simply because I had been taught this was the proper way to handle it. But when it came time for my big orange cat to leave, I held him on my shoulder outside the vet's office because I knew how much he loved being outdoors. I held and tried to sooth the following four cats. Unfortunately, my German Shepherd died at the vet's office without any family there. We had left her there to be examined. Just as one of the vets got free to examine her, she dropped dead. To this day, I still feel very sad that Murph had no one with her the last couple hours of her life or when she passed.

Our oldest dog is fifteen and has a huge lump of cancer on her hind leg. She doesn't seem to be in any pain, eats and drinks well, and barks her fool head off any time anyone walks past our yard. (Trash day is her favorite. She gets to bark the whole day long.) I know the day is coming, though, and it just breaks my heart to think of it. But I will be with her to the very last.

148 Ah screw it. Resignation letter below. It has NOT yet been sent, so any ideas are welcome. And yeah I already know: too long, too whiny.

*****

Hi [lead attorney/firm owner]. Apologies, but this email is to submit my resignation from the firm, effective immediately. Please mail my final paycheck(s) to my address, which you should have on file. Overall I appreciate my just under 13 months with [last name of lead attorney] Family Law, but I just can't deal with Jessica [my paralegal boss] anymore without feeling angry, frustrated, treated unfairly, and belittled. She apparently is a very good paralegal but in my opinion she is simply NOT a good supervisor, at all.

If I could elaborate:

- I am tired of being personally blamed for ANY instance of paper or documents being misplaced anywhere, either hard copies or in Dropbox.

- I am tired of how persecutorial she is about any problems I have, which I have worked hard to fix and avoid.

- I am tired of being blaming for "changes" I have NOT made to the Excel spreadsheets or other items in the office. (This happened just today in fact; she blamed me for dividing up Excel case file information by matter type, when this is exactly what she asked me to do months ago when we were having other database issues.)

- I am tired of her habit of "mouthing off" at me about little things when she is overworked, frustrated and tired.

- I am tired of her attempts to micromanage every word I say to clients on the phone.

- I am tired of her treating Clio, the entire office and everything in Dropbox as if it is her personal property and her overreaction if I make even the slightest change to anything, even when I can (a) explain why the change is beneficial, (b) the change is very minor, and (c) it's easy to undo. It is difficult to work with exactly zero autonomy about anything in your surroundings and environment.

- I'm tired of the lack of feedback from her, other than very negative and often angry feedback.

- I am angry about her having accused me at least twice of "not doing my job." If I haven't been doing my job, why am I still employed with [you]? And if a client repeatedly accused YOU of "not doing your job" as an attorney, would you accept that statement and continue to work for them, or advise that perhaps they should find another attorney to represent them?

- I am tired of the fact that EVERY time I have tried to bring up these points with Jessica, she becomes extremely defensive; claims I am yelling, screaming and out of control; declares "you're not doing your job;" and claims I am unmanageable.

It is true there have been incidents when I became defensive with Jessica. I have taken steps to reduce that. But it seems like no matter what I try to improve communication or performance, she finds issues to obsess on, EVEN WHEN THE WORK IS STILL GETTING DONE. Besides pushing certain issues past any rational point, she is often upset because I do certain things (such as, updating the case disclosure notices list) in an "as-they-pass-my-desk" fashion, instead of grouping them into the weekly schedule we prepared. I admit I could have been more open about this, but see below about how hard she is to communicate with. Jessica has asked me in a derisive tone, "if you haven't done what's on the list, what HAVE you been doing??" I have been DOING THE PROJECTS SHE GIVES ME TO DO EVERY DAY. Does she think I just sit at my desk doing nothing almost every day, ignoring my duties?

For many of my tasks, without positive as well as negative feedback, I HAVE NO WAY OF KNOWING IF WHAT I AM DOING IS WORKING. Yet Jessica seems to believe I should just magically know.

Jessica is impossible to communicate with in the office. She often dismisses anything I share with a flippant remark. Whenever I ask about taking a day off or payroll issues, she gets irritated and says "I'm not HR, take it up with [lead attorney name]!" She seems to enjoy jumping to the blame game (with me the loser) about every problem, rather than putting an effort into FIXING things. And just this week when I was finishing up with getting caught up on [index] labeling, which I ADMITTED being behind on, I sent her an email noting my progress and asked if some ideas for changes I had were worthwhile. In a follow-up email she said she’d refer the ideas to you, which is fine, but then launched into giving me a strict deadline to finish (superfluous as I was almost done anyway) and complaints about "wasting time" if/when it's not absolutely perfect.

I thought that after being with the firm some time, Jessica would realize I know what I am doing, and that I do have the best interests of the firm in mind. She instead acts as if I were a misbehaving child who just wants to cause trouble. I come in EVERY DAY with the desire and intention to do an excellent job. Making honest mistakes is NOT the same thing as willful disobedience. But Jessica doesn't see it that way, I guess.

Not to be rude, but I just have to say it: In the past six months, you have lost [former coworker 1], [former coworker 2], [former coworker 3], and now me. Is it NOT POSSIBLE that Jessica has issues of her own that she needs to deal with?

I write this in the hope I can leave on good terms with you at least. Take care and continued good fortune with the practice as it appears to continue a great growth trajectory. If you have any questions or wish to discuss any of this further with me, feel free to call at your convenience at [qdpsteve's phone number], or you can email me back here at [qdpsteve's email addy].

Best regards,

[qdpsteve's real name]

152 Our family dog had to be put down when I was 15. My dad took him to the vet. I didn't want to go. I said my goodbyes to him beforehand.

I didn't have any pets for many years.

In 2000, I adopted a pair of kittens. Leo died suddenly and unexpectedly at age 7, probably of a heart attack.

Kira lived to 17. Her health was declining in her last months and she had chronic kidney failure. She lost interest in eating. The last time I took her to the vet, the vet said that if she stops drinking, starts vomiting, or is unable to move, then it will be time.

But none of that happened. She was still drinking and moving Friday night. I got up to go to the bathroom and found her in the hall, and picked her up and put her in the bed with me. When I woke up early Saturday morning, her breathing was labored and her eyes were staring. It was obvious that she was at the end. I didn't know if the vet's office was even open that early, and at any rate I didn't want to put her in the car and take her there. It looked like she could go at any minute and so I just sat with her, talking to her and petting her.

It was a natural death and while she may have suffered somewhat at the end, I thought it was better than the possibility of her dying in the back seat of the car while I drove her to the vet. She always hated that car trip.

(This was in August of last year.)

176 Nike Fights to Keep Oregon a 'Sanctuary State' After Illegal Alien Kills Young Couple
http://bit.ly/2Ok0kaV

The multinational Nike corporation - accused of employing slave labor - is fighting to keep Oregon a "sanctuary state" for all illegal aliens less than a month after an illegal alien has been accused of killing a young couple in a drunk driving car crash.

In a statement this week, Nike CEO Mark Parker announced the corporation's opposition to a statewide measure that would repeal Oregon's sanctuary state law that has protected criminal illegal aliens for three decades.

177 Verizon's rolling out it's "sorta kinda" 5g network at the start of next month. It'll be for home internet only, with the mobile service coming later. And it's rolling out in four cities. One of them is Los Angeles.

Well, since I live in LA County - i.e. part of the LA metropolitan area - and my current internet service sucks, I decided to go ahead and enter my address. No luck for me, though. And that, of course, leaves the obvious question. Namely, just which parts of Los Angeles are getting the service at the roll out? Unfortunately, these days it seems like companies are loathe to let customers have easy access to service maps so that you can find out which companies provide internet service in a given area. Instead, you're forced to go to the individual sites, enter your address, and hope for the best.

You would think that providing coverage maps would be a no brainer. But apparently that's not the case.

A couple of years ago, it was clear that Sarge was going to have to make his last trip to the vet. I came home early from work to pick him up. I did not see his pen mate Ilya in with him. I called and called and finally ran to the outer pen outside and found him dead.

So I had to bag his stiff body, drive Sarge to the vet to have him put down, came back to pick up Ilya and take both to the crematorium.

To make a long story short, a couple weeks later the British occupied Philadelphia, the Continental Congress fled, and the Continental Army retired to Valley Forge to spend the winter.

266 qdpsteve ... upon leaving a job due to a supervisor I absolutely loathed, my approach was slightly different. At the end of the last shift I intended to work there I placed a cheap 8-track player with a tape installed and a note affixed.

The note simply said "Play this tape."

The tape was Johnny Paycheck's song, "Take this job and shove it."

I caution you, however, to burn (dynamite, bulldoze) your bridges carefully. When I did the above I already had a job in the neighboring state with and old-time good buddy who knew me well. Seven months later my old boss finally found out where I was and sent a blistering letter in an effort to get me fired. My buddy showed it to me, said "Don't need to ask, sounds just like you. I figure the asshole deserved it."

It's nice to have back up.

296 qdpsteve: Your resignation letter is one of the biggest reasons I left my last job to open my own bookstore. I worked in the fast food field as everything from a waitress up to the manager. After my twins were in first grade and I could go back to work full time because I wouldn't end the week in hock to the day care center, I got a job in a chain bookstore -- the perfect place to learn how not to sell books. I went from part time to assistant manager, then stepped down to part time peon again. When I quit, I swore I would never again work where doing my job depended on someone else doing theirs properly. I was sick to death of being told that if field personnel would simply do what Home Office told us to do, everything would be just hunky dory. (Never mind that 95% of HO personnel had never interacted with a single customer in their entire lives.) And I was really and truly sick of the eternal politicking. The district manager was totally infatuated with two of her managers. The rest of her stores were just not good enough under any circumstances. Once, my manager was trying to tell our regional director about something nifty I had done to promote our store, and the district manager broke in to tell the RD what a great thing one of her pet managers had done, literally and figuratively pushing me out of sight.

All of that was just the long way of telling you how much I sympathize with your situation. I'm guessing HR and the attorneys know what's happening, but this gal is being protected by someone high on the company food chain. I hope you can find another job with a different company as soon as possible.

Good luck.

299 qdpsteve,

I tend to think you should give some notice you are leaving - two weeks is the norm. (Obviously this assumes you can stay sane that long.)
It might give you the opportunity to have a 'come to Jesus' moment with the boss (not your biotch supervisor) in private, where you can explain your environment. The fact that others are leaving, apparently because of her, should be noticed by the boss. Your notice might be the straw that breaks the camel's back and forces the boss to deal with the root issue.
The key is to try and remain positive while explaining that you are performing your job well, but the unreasonable, uncivil behavior is the problem.
It's tough, but try to be a mallard (let the water roll off your back!), and vent with the Horde, rather than toss grenades at any bridges.
Good luck!

I trust that I have contributed as much to your firm as I have taken away. I wish you good fortune with the practice as it appears to continue a great growth trajectory."

I scooped him up and took him to the vet and he stayed over night and got sewn up. I forget what the bill was but this was 40 years ago. Still more than I could afford.

Got him back and ever after, he would climb into bed with me and sit on my chest purring to beat the band.

326 Verizon's rolling out it's "sorta kinda" 5g network at the start of next month.

Posted by: junior

TMobile is also rolling out a 600Mhz LTE service (chn 71) which should have significantly larger footprints. Giving less populated areas access to higher speeds. I think that is going to be more important in the market than 5G for a while.

I wasn't right for a week, but i'll be damned if I let him die alone.

Dusty in here.

The allied German and Austrian infantry outside the walls were joined by the Polish infantry, and they collectively had a hard day or two of it holding off the various attacks by the sizable portion of the Ottoman army not actually besieging the city. But by the afternoon of 9/11 the Ottoman infantry had withdrawn, and cavalry scouts reported to King Jan that his cavalry had room to ride. A "forlorn hope" was sent in to test the waters, and those men became the heroes of Poland. Their success at penetrating into the enemy ranks encouraged the king, so that he displayed his banners, had the advance sounded, and with his household guard at the vanguard led the great charge into the Ottoman host, routing the Turkish horse who tried to stop them and then chasing them into the infantry who were trying to dress their lines. As the panzerneki medium cavalry, German-style dragoons, and horse-archers joined in, the rout set in, and the Vizier had his tent struck and went to salvage what he could from the debacle.

A Brit sci-fi show will travel to Jim Crow America to explore racism of that time, and will be filmed in South Africa. Think about that one....

437 Beartooth....that "replacing stuff with stuff" ploy? It works.

Acquaintance of mine up in San Antonio, was *way* over-financed (upside down) in his gleaming huge Dodge diesel.... just ridiculously so.

So, he replaces all the tools in the toolboxes with pawnshop pickups. Like you, he "built" a well used wallet with "2nd tier" family pics, receipts, and etc. Cab of truck was *not* "cleaned out", but looked like he intended to drive to work the following Monday.

He hooks up his 18 ft. fishing boat, backs up to a near-San Antonio lake, and "oops, forgets to put it in park" on the ramp. Sank the truck, the boat floated free, and the trailer just didn't care, being made to be dunked.

Cops went through his tools and effects with GREAT interest....and declared it a legit accident.

He had "gap insurance" on the financing....and walked away free and clear.

Oh, did I mention this guy was a COP?

I guess that made his homework a lot easier!

"Just for your education, and that of your customers, the menu in this place - in fact, this place itself, and the very possibility of such a business - was made possible by the US constitution and a unique history of individual freedom, rule of law (including, especially, in immigration), potable water, capitalism, insurance (real insurance), nuclear weapons, and the US military."

482 @326
TMobile is also rolling out a 600Mhz LTE service (chn 71) which should have significantly larger footprints. Giving less populated areas access to higher speeds. I think that is going to be more important in the market than 5G for a while.
-------------------

Depends on where you live. If you live in a rural area, then yeah, the TMobile thing will be more important. If you live in an urban area, then it really doesn't mean much. You've already got the high speed.

Also, the urban areas are going to be the ones that get 5G first in any event. More customers, and also my understanding is that the range is shorter. So you have to be closer to the antenna to use 5G than you do with other services. Thus, 5G will more than likely be restricted to heavily urban areas for at least several years.

But the problem, as always, comes down to "what does it mean when they say that they're installing in this area". In the more rural areas, I would imagine that when they say "We're providing service to X", then you've got a pretty good idea of what they mean by that. Unfortunately, that's not the case in an urban area. A provider says "We're providing service to X", and then you have to figure out exactly which neighborhoods in X are going to be the ones getting the service.

507 The Apocalypse Burger

Followers of the #ProgressivePuritanReligion create a new chapter in their Bible

Can climate-friendly cuisine help save the planet? Welcome to Zero Foodprint week https://cour.at/2xadyiU

Now it is among 60 restaurants promising a carbon-free dining experience this week. Why? Because this is San Francisco, and chefs want to ensure that Gov. Jerry Brown's global climate summit is fit for foodies, complete with esoteric menus worth a cameo on "Portlandia."...

Restaurants taking part in Zero Foodprint week aim to set an example that the rest of the food industry can embrace - not just high-brow establishments selling such items as the "Apocalypse Burger," a tasty creation built around a modest grass-fed beef patty that is plated to look like a charcoal briquette - a no-no because it's pure carbon.

"The dish is an allusion to the backyard barbecue - the iconic symbol of American leisure and wastefulness - with the briquette serving as the physical embodiment of carbon, stored prior to release into the atmosphere," says a menu note from the creator of the dish, chef Anthony Myint...

But the movement is no joke. Food is fast emerging as one of the more intractable - and overlooked - climate problems. Hence Zero Foodprint week.

Myint obsesses over every stage of the food that lands on the tables of his restaurants, which include the Perennial and Mission Chinese Food, and how it affects the planet. If everyone else in the food business were as meticulous, he argues, it would help reduce the emissions that lead to global warming.

His diners can afford the added cost of carbon-neutral dining. Now he and other like-minded restaurateurs are trying to figure out how to export the climate-conscious culture to more modest establishments.

The Apocalypse Burger is on the menu this week at In Situ, the sophisticated restaurant tucked into the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art that Myint does not own but that embraces his philosophy. And In Situ's "thousand year" quail eggs that emerged as so climate-unfriendly? They still rotate in, too.

But the restaurant offsets the impact they cause by investing in a sustainable ranch in Marin County that claims a pioneering approach for raising cattle, one that scientists say could help reduce methane from cows and other greenhouse gases from the world's expanding beef consumption were it embraced by industrial beef producers.

Diners who order the $13 Apocalypse Burger are charged an extra buck to cover the offsets. A note on the menu explains it.

I have avoided a lifetime of such angst, by simply having never been interested much SciFI, damn near zero fantasy novels (though Tolkien beckons, now that I know more about his war and history creds), and ZERO "role play" engagements.

Yeah, I might've cheated myself of much cultural enrichment, but then again, I get the Cliff's Notes version (since high school) from all of those neck-deep in all of the "scenes".

I don't write this disdainfully, but practically.

I've had to bust ass to make income, since all the way back to the 8th grade. That, or Mom n' me didn't EAT.

Posted by: some rat in the swamp at September 14, 2018 02:58 AM (LOq4H)

Wellsite geologist. My job is to QC the geology side of the drilling operation. I usually confer with the Drilling supervisor on a daily basis, rarely with the toolpush, unless I need something done for me by rig hands. My only real "authority" on the lease is to tell them when to stop drilling. I would usually do that in conjunction with the play geologist in the office, but he (or she) often will tell me, "once you see the top of the Fernie, drill 5 more meters, and call TD." So I pick the Fernie top, and hence pick TD. (Did a lot of wells where the Fernie marked the end of the operator's rights. Alberta law allows us to go a few meters into the next formation, so as to be able to pick that boundary on wireline logs.)

Had a co-worker on many wells, Lyle. he was a good guy, very gruff in demeanor, but knowledgable, and good to work with. He often said to me, "I have to get out of this oil patch, it's going to kill me." So, he was on a spell off between wells, helping a friend feed cattle on his ranch, and got snagged in the PTO of the tractor. RIP, Lyle.

609 6:52 AM EDT just north of Raleigh NC and all is well. The eye of the storm has closed to less than 10 miles from Wilmington, is moving at 6 mph and has winds up to 90mph. Storm surges of 7 feet have been reported in Emerald Isle and surges of up to 11 feet are expected. Duke Energy reports 300,000 without power in the coastal regions of the Carolinas.
Here at the Refuge we have winds about what you would expect from a windy day, 10-15 sustained with gusts up to maybe 25 and just enough rain to keep everything well dampened. We have had power, cable and Internet throughout. This may change as the storm comes ashore and tracks across South Carolina but we're not going to get it nearly as bad as those in the storms path. Keep the coasts and South Carolina in your prayers.
This concludes the weather report from the Refuge. The show must go on and I have to go to work tonight, so it's off to bed with me. Later roonz and roonettez, fear no evil!

Each time they lose, they blame the Electoral College and want to have that converted into California and NY deciding which Democrat rules the country.

I want Devin Nunes to be the new Attorney General. I respect JackStraw a great deal for the research he does which our dickweed journalists are too lazy and dumb to do, but he misled me badly when he advised us to sit back and enjoy things when the first OIG report came out. First of all the summary of that was written by one of many dishonest people in the DOJ who gave Schmuck Schumer talking points that there was nothing to see here even though the data deeper in the report said otherwise. Second, whatever referrals came out of that are being slow walked by those slugs, Horowitz and Huber, so that nothing happens for any of us to enjoy. Meanwhile the Grand Inquisitor Mueller wrecking ball continues to swing in real time with no check on him.

This is all the responsibility of Jeff Sessions, a small man for a big job.
