Twitter Bars Center for Immigration Studies from Using Phrase "Illegal Alien," Claiming It's Hate Speech;
Later, Under Pressure, Reverses Its Ban

Here are their tweets about this latest Twitter censorship:

1/ Twitter is not allowing us to promote any tweets including the phrase "illegal alien(s)", citing it as Hateful Content. However, the phrase "illegal aliens" has been used in both federal law and by the Supreme Court.

2/ From Arizona v. United States (2012): "There is no reason Arizona cannot make it a state crime for a removable alien (or any illegal alien, for that matter) to remain present in Arizona."

3/ Title 8 of the United States Code, Section 1365: "The Attorney General shall reimburse a State for the costs incurred by the State for the imprisonment of any illegal alien or Cuban national who is convicted of a felony by such State"

4/ US District Court Judge Andrew Hanen, 2015: "There is a certain segment of the population that finds the phrase 'illegal alien' offensive. The court uses this term because it is the term used by the Supreme Court in its latest pronouncement pertaining to this area of the law."

5/ Code of Federal Regulations: "Illegal alien means any person who is not lawfully admitted for permanent residence in the United States or who has not been authorized by the Attorney General to accept employment in the United States."

PRESS RELEASE: Yesterday Twitter rejected four Center for Immigration Studies tweets for use in the Center's Twitter Ads campaign, alleging hateful content.

Twitter has now reversed its ruling here, but only because of pressure.

Waiting for National Review to shriek that private monopolies can do whatever they want.

Oh, here, the wait is over before it began:

That's Kevin D. Williamson, of course, who should really Learn To Code if his only suggestion is "start your own tech-giant monopoly if you don't like the current tech-giant monopolies who can easily squelch all start-up competitors."

I don't suggest reading it. It's more of the same.

There is an implicit claim being made here -- that the special laws regarding monopolies are illegitimate and should be repealed or silently repealed and just ignored until they are dead-letter.

Ultra-Corporatists like Williamson, French, and Goldberg should be made to explain their feelings on this and defend them. The whole idea of the wisdom of markets determining the proper winner of market competition assumes market competition in the first place -- do these Ultra-Corporatists dispute this? Do they think that monopolies contain the seeds of their own destruction?

Even if that is the case -- what do we do in a nonfunctional monopolized market for the 10-40 years while we wait for the monopoly to implode due to its own internal contradictions?

Can they actually argue for and defend their unstated pro-monopoly assumptions instead of just asserting them by stealth?

113 A British Expat is Terrified by America's Gun Culture

US gun owners are holding the country hostage - and I fear for my family's safety
https://bit.ly/2QrCj2W

Friends and family in the UK often ask me: "What do you hate most about living in America?" My answer is always the same: "Guns". The horrific epidemic of mass shootings. The ludicrously easy access to firearms. The ridiculous power of the National Rifle Association (NRA)

It's politically incorrect, though, to point out that the fear expressed by gun-owners is racially tinged. Guns have long been seen as protection for white folks against black and brown folks - yesterday's Apaches and Sioux are today's Mexicans and Muslims. "Be careful what you say about guns," American friends of mine often warn me. "Remember what happened to Piers Morgan?"

Foreigners in the US are frequently told to defer to the constitution and the hallowed second amendment and its right to "bear arms"; they're reminded of how guns are part of America's founding story and inextricably linked to the country's rugged individualism and "frontier spirit"; they're supposed to recognise how Americans, in the words of the US historian Garry Wills, proudly demonstrate "our fealty, our bondage, to the great god Gun".

Yet this is misinformation, plain and simple. Let's be clear: US gun culture is built on myths and lies; on propaganda pumped out by the NRA, Fox News and gun manufacturers. Here are the facts about the country's fabled gun culture: almost four out of five American adults (78 per cent) do not own a firearm. In fact, just 3 per cent own half of all the guns in the US, with the other half held by only 19 per cent. The average American gun-owner has eight firearms; the average American owns none. Polls suggest three out of four Americans believe gun laws should be stricter than they are now, while nine out of ten support background checks for all gun-buyers.

The truth is that a small fraction of Americans - aka gun-owners - are holding the vast majority - aka non-gun-owners - hostage. They neither know, nor care, that the rest of the industrialised world doesn't live like this; they don't live in fear of mass shootings.

Apple and AMZN combined are about $2.1 trillion market cap, GOOG another $0.85T. That's something like 15% of total US GDP, but huge in terms of how many stocks there are now, and the growth of America.

And do they have real earnings, or could being so political cut the rug out from under them quickly, as other competitors are more easily "the next new thing" in the digital realm.

Easy Money government policy let AMZN drive others out of business by losing money on every book sold, for 20 years. And certain go-go momentum stocks were bought due to momentum.

lots could change quickly ... hopefully not till after the election. And the anti-trust issue and free speech issues are just a couple of the big questions.

LOL!

i went to w*rk for Ralphs, the local Kroger chain, and they gave me an employee discount loyalty card... like the regular card, but with additional discounts available.

for a variety of reasons, i almost never shopped at their stores back then, because the other chains were easier to get to, into, and out of, and their prices were better too.

a couple weeks into my unpleasant 6 months with them, i got called in t the bosses office for some updates and taskings, then on the way out, i caught grief for not using the card.

i politely explained why the local stores didn't w*rk for me, and was told that they expected me to spend my paycheck at their stores to buy my groceries...

that was the 2nd major indicator that i never should have taken the position.

Someone takes umbrage at "illegal aliens," I reply, "OK, I take your point. 'Wetbacks' it is, then. Happy now?"

353 336 I had Popular Mechanics and Popular Science subscriptions continuously since I was 13 or 14, and cut them off a decade or so ago. It got so irritating for everything to be politically motivated and so anti-science.

Same thing with Scientific American, which is neither, having been bought by some Brits and made into a socialist soapbox.

354 Eh, I agree with National Review. Govt. doesn't and shouldn't get involved. The customer base holds the power. As long as "conservatives" continue to use Twitter, GOOGLE, Facebook...they deserve every injustice and biased decision they get.

This "thank you may I have another" mentality is mind boggling.

I agree government intervention may not be the best course *, but a discussion about the companies efforts to silence the RIght needs to be had and pushed into the national frame.

US conservatives are a small slice of their customer base, I'm afraid, in particular those that really are aware and politically active. I don't think the companies will care very much. You could get every single Trump voter to stop using Google search, for example, and nothing would change.

Name and shame and ridicule activism and host of other efforts will be needed. I dont' know how that's to come about.

Leaving all internet interaction entirely is a death sentence for the Right. If you think you can get 63 million conservatives to become IT experts overnight, prepare to be disappointed.

*Outside of enforcing all existing laws to an unusual degree when it comes to the social companies' interference in elections, HIPAA violations, H1B violations, etc. If they want more big government, we should give them the full measure.

356 354/ Screw the high-school level Lazziez Faire argument about private business. All individuals and business are in fact drowning in regulations, so why the hell should Social Media get a free pass?

Further, a strong argument can be made that the fundamental rights, like freedom of speech, are now in mortal jeopardy because of Facebook, Google and Twitter which are undeniably the modern-day street corner and they are suppressing political speech -- which receives the highest level of protection from Supreme Court when it comes to Government action.

Yes, they are private parties. But manipulating news and suppressing political view points while promoting others -- to an audience in the billions -- is new territory. And it's mortally dangerous to the principle that free speech demands a free and open marketplace of ideas. CLEARLY needs regulation because of the abusive tactics of these companies.

Silly. Because they could have avoided it by just being really really good at search engine and really really good at providing a public forum. All of their concerns about "unsafe spaces" could be instantly fixed via technology by just letting users ban other users.... or let users ban certain hastag search terms.

If an Individual wants to seal themselves in a left-wing bubble, then great. But it's a serious problem when Google et. all try to seal ME off into THEIR liberal bubble. Intolerable. Must be addressed.

357 And it's not just suppression of speech and people. It's also manipulation of search terms -- manipulation of knowledge itself.

Google: "American Inventors." Boom.

Serious question.....how many people actually read the national review these days?

VDH, Andy McCarthy and Dinesh D'Souza are doing fine work, on balance. Most of the rest of it is worse than TepidAir.

In fact, just 3 per cent own half of all the guns in the US, with the other half held by only 19 per cent

---

"That's
probably about right, although I suspect he's wrong about the single
gun moms and pops who aren't part of "gun culture" but know it takes the
cops 30 minutes to get to their house to fill out the paperwork. Here
in the South there are LOTS of households out there with one gun.

Regardless, it's pretty badass that 20% of the nation can protect the other 80% as well as we do."

Odd, there's Pareto again. Imagine that.
