Gun Thread: 357 Magnum - Bigger is Better! [Weasel]

pic 4.1 SW19-3.jpeg

Smith & Wesson Model 19

If the .38 Special cartridge is good, then a bigger, faster version has to be great, right?

pic 4.2 SW686-5.jpeg

Smith and Wesson Model 686

Designed in the mid-thirties by Elmer Keith, Philip Sharpe and Douglas Wesson the .357 Magnum is the big brother to the .38 Special. At a time when many law enforcement officers were issued the .38 Special, a still higher energy cartridge was needed to penetrate automotive steel and bullet-proof vests then being used by gangsters and bootleggers. With a transitional step as the .38/44 in about 1930, the .357 Magnum hit the market a few years later with bullet velocities in excess of 1400 fps and energies nearly triple that of the .38 Special. Quickly becoming a favorite of law enforcement, Colt's marketing department went as far as to name an offering in their honor.

pic 4.3 Colt Trooper MkIII.jpeg

Colt Trooper MKIII

As with other straight walled cartridges, the .357 Magnum is popular with reloaders. Common bullet weights are 125 gr and 158 gr, with muzzle velocities around 1450 fps and 1250 fps, respectively. One note of caution, cracked revolver forcing cones have been attributed to excessive velocities with the lighter bullets. Be careful!

Pic 4.4 38 v 357.jpeg

.38 Special (L), .357 Magnum (C), Dime (R)

Although the internal case volume isn't needed for powder, the .357 Magnum case was lengthened slightly (.125") to avoid inadvertant use in the lighter frame .38 Special revolvers.

Considered the Holy Grail of .357 Magnum collecting is the Smith and Wesson Registered Magnum. Pictured above is the RM in my personal collection.

***This Old Gun***

Our pal rhomboid sends us this week's old gun...

pic 4.6 rhomboid king cobra.JPG

Colt King Cobra

A consignment rescue, rhomboid found this week's old gun with a bobbed hammer and lots of handling marks. Now sporting Hogue Pau Ferro grips, a new hammer and refinishing by the Colt Custom Shop, it has been restored to premium condition. Nice job, rhomboid! I'd be honored to have a cap popped in my ass with this very nice example of the Colt King Cobra!

31 I like at least a 6" barrel. If you go with anything shorter you have to go with a much faster burning powder to get the full use of the load. However using something like Bullseye is hard on the pistol and you can't get the full velocity out of it..

Posted by: Vic We Have No Party at September 16, 2018 07:16 PM (mpXpK)

32 There was some bungling detective comedy (forget which one, Naked Gun, Sledge Hammer, something like that) where the detective actually defended himself by stapling the bad guy. Next scene the bad guy was using a staple remover to get the staples out of his face. Hilarious. Anyone remember that?

Posted by: Steve and Cold Bear at September 16, 2018 07:17 PM (/qEW2)

33 I don't believe her and I think if anyone questions her or reads the "notes" (that even Wapo says are inconsistent with what she now claims) they will be able to glean more details that could possibly disprove her story.

But honestly, even if it were true, I would not care. A 17 year old jumping on a girl at a party and then she leaves is hardly a capital offense. I was in a treehouse with a guy in 7th grade and he tried to grab and kiss me. I was a little freaked out, but hardly traumatized and would not now try to ruin his life over it (even if I remembered his name, which I don't).

But- it never happened, I am sure.

52 The worst thing about a hot loaded .357 is it doesn't make a good home defense weapon unless you have no neighbors living near you. A jacketed 125 gr hollow point will whistle right through the body of an intruder, then the wall behind them, and then likely the neighbor's wall unless you have brick walls.

Ramshot Hunter

80 Hah! Those little Smiths and Colts are nuthin'. Sure, they're nice revolvers but dinky. Try a 357 Redhawk from the original run in the mid-1980s. Ruger basically took their Redhawk 44 magnum and drilled smaller holes. Weighs a ton but can handle, easily, any semi-sane 357 magnum load. The cylinder is commonly compared to a bank vault. They only made about 5,000 of them and it is the closest thing to a 'rare' firearm I have.

87 Sure you can. The sintered copper only does its job and disrupts when it actually hits something. The firing of a pistol round in a short barrel is not enough for the projectile to break down. The pressure is not high enough.
5.56mm frangible works fine in M4 barrels profiles for police work and they are significantly higher pressure and velocity that a pistol. I doubt that 125gn .357 can " whistle" through a human body unless a periphery hit, unlike 7.62 x 51 which I have seen " whistle" through and mallet a person behind.

Yes, we have. And we update periodically. We have them scheduled separately on our home owners insurance. You would be shocked at what a small collection can add up to be worth should you need to replace it. Regardless of whether you keep guns in fire safes, etc. stuff can happen to them and you need to have a list to give to the insurance company.

A fine weapon, but you don't want to feed it a steady diet of .357s. It was designed to be lighter than the Model 27 for more comfortable all-day carry for LEOs, and fired with .38 Special for frequent practice, with the .357 saved for occasional practice and duty.

SW came out with the 586 to split the difference between the 27 and the 19. A bit more robust for a steady .357 diet.

Yes, just got back a few hours ago.

Tried using reactive (splatter) targets and it made a HUGE difference. Had my best groups ever.

I had been avoiding those targets before because they were so expensive at Walmart. Then I noticed they were cheap when bought in bulk on Amazon.

My accuracy improved so much I had to move back from 7 to 10 yardss so the bullet holes wouldn't overlap so much!

116 > 52 The worst thing about a hot loaded .357 is it doesn't make a good home defense weapon unless you have no neighbors living near you. A jacketed 125 gr hollow point will whistle right through the body of an intruder,

If your HOLLOW POINT is going through the body of the target then you're doing it wrong. Use a bullet that actually expands. There's a lot of ballistic gel tests for .357 mag you can find online.

I swapped my Kel-Tec FP9 for the 638 for pocket carry after some side by side testing. The capacity is better with the smaller autos but both are as good/bad for shooting and the 638 weighs less and draws easier. If I have to tussle at contact ranges, revolver might be better.

And the 638 doesn't have that mag eject problem.

130 My sad gun story:

Had a client owe me money he couldn't pay. Took an HK 91 and a Steyer/Manlicher sniper rifle with double set trigger in lieu of cash. Seven years later, and one year post-divorce, sold both to meet very pressing bills (two months arrears car payment and overdue child support). Three years later my finances were much better and wanted to buy weapons back.

Alas, he had died and window who 'hated guns' sold them to pawn shop. sigh

Loved those weapons. The HK 91 kicked it's brass ougt towards the enemy and that double set trigger would go bang with the wind from a passing butterfly. I shot 4" patterns at 1000 yds. with it from sand bagged rest. Buddy, a much better shot than I, did sub 2" patterns at same range.

I'd rather shoot .45 or 10mm. I think I do still have a S&W model 28, though. Thought about getting a Coonan but funemployment intervened.

But I wanted something I could shoot deer and rabbit with, and didn't want to wait for a second gun for that.

So anyway: Great gun. Recoil operated, of course, not gas; very reliable, even if you don't clean it after every single use. I have no idea how old mine is; hell, it might have been a reconditioned WW1 trench gun, for all I know -- it was ancient and pitted when I bought it in 1978. Reliable, patterns great. Not the best trigger, but safe operation. A little heavy.

Most of them stay frost free by venting into the refrigerator. Can you check and see if there is a vent line, and whether it is frozen over. May be as simple as that.

Came with a new French Foreign Legion drop holster.

Frost free works by having a sensor and heating coils around the freezer cooling coils. If the sensor or the heating coils go bad it will frost up. The parts are cheap but the labor depends on the area.

I put another 200 rounds through the PPQ 45. It is, still, a very very accurate pistol.

However, I had two dead triggers (I was riding the reset to try to repro last week's failures) and one straight failure to fire (no striker hit) out of the 200 rounds.

That's not good enough for a carry gun.

So I'm back to the XD, since that always, always goes bang and is sufficiently accurate and then some. Glocks will go back into rotation as backups.

I'm going to fiddle with it some more but it looks like that IF I keep the gun very clean and if I don't try to ride the reset, it should still be a fun range toy or a tertiary carry choice. But I'm still nervous about carrying it and relying on it.

175 If I open carried like Weasel down at Weasel Acres, A 4" 357 revolver would be ideal. Especially if loaded with 38 special +P ammo or snake shot and the 38s. Comfortable on your waist, the barrel doesn't get in the way when seated, and quick to deploy. If needed, you can always go to full power 357s. I'm comfortable with single actions but a Smith or Ruger GP100 double action would work just fine.

Being me, I would probably choose a Blackhawk in 45 Colt but it's 357s under discussion.

181 My dad had a .357 magnum. It had a snub nose and these red and white sights, IE, there were two bright red tabs near the hammer and white pip on end of the barrel.
He carried it all the time. He worked in security for a big corporation I won't name, and investigated company theft. IE inside jobs where folks were embezzling money or stealing stuff from the job. And I'm talking large scale theft. He got alot of death threats from people he helped put in jail. But he told me the worst cases were the ones he did on the side for extra cash. He had a PI license and he would sometimes moonlight doing cases for individuals, and these were mostly divorce/adultery cases. He said THOSE were the ones that crazy ugly and those people were the main reason he carried.

I helped him a few times, but mostly it was boring stake out type stuff. And once or twice we would follow people around using different cars, but really that's boring too. That part of the job is not that exciting, and that's most of the job, really.
Once, when I was just out of high school I stole my dad's gun out of his briefcase and took it someplace to do something bad to someone. To my great fortune, the someone's were gone by the time I got there with dad's gun. I eventually cooled off and brought the gun back. I look back at that moment from time to time and realize how lucky it was that things happened the way the way they did that night. How easily my life could have been very different.
The Man Upstairs was looking out for me that day, without doubt.
Any time I see or hear about a .357 I think about it. Someday I may eventually purchase a handgun, but it won't be one of those.

I have not had any problems shooting hollow points with modern pistols or revolvers, but older models of pistols may not feed properly as hollow point ammo was not a consideration when they were made.

I usually shoot what hollow point ammo I have in my carry pistols and revolver about every 6 months just to change out the rounds for the next 6 month carry period.

272 Kavanaugh has been through six FBI background checks -- as a known conservative! -- and they never found even a hint of any of this. If there had been, then Democrats would have used it earlier.

There are literally dozens of character witnesses saying "no way". He denies it unequivocally. The other guy who was supposedly there says he doesn't remember anything like that.

The professor's story has changed, apparently as needed. She didn't tell ANYONE at the time, only making the claim close to 30 years later, and even then without naming Kavanaugh.

I'd bet if you had access to a mailing list she's on, you'll find a call for someone of such-and-such age from a certain part of the country, with "a story they can tell" to take out Kavanaugh.

Why would he withdraw? Why would anyone grant her claims ANY credence?

It's kind of depressing. We don't have conservative women who are willing to go on record and volunteer by lying and slandering candidates. They have too much integrity. I don't blame them. If he withdraws on his own volition --- (as opposed to being forced to by Trump) --- so be it. We will perhaps have dodged a bullet.

Being a conservative on the Court sometimes takes guts, the strength to endure the venom and hatred of the Left.

302 @272
Well he can't withdraw of his own volition because he would effectively be validating the accusations and not just ending his SCOTUS nomination but probably his role on the DC court as well.

I can easily see the usual suspects going wobbly.

This bullshit also gives the handful of Dems in Red States that would have been a yes because they are in tough races all the excuse they need to vote no.

The GOP is ideologically weak, undisciplined and lacks the will to enforce order on it's own members and is effectively 51 free agents and fucktards.

And since it has never sought to make Democrats pay a price for their underhanded and satanic bullshit, see Roy Moore, this is what you get and you will keep on getting until they grow a pair and make them pay.

The GOP is a useless pile of dog shit.

411 regarding comment number 114. The Remington Model 11 is a very nice, but hard kicking shotgun in 12 guage. Thirty years ago, I rescued a rusted Model 11 from under a buddy's leaky patio, a rusted hulk. Several bottles of naval jelly, a stock and fore end from Numrich, and a coat of grey Dura Coat later, the Model 11 turned out to be my son's favorite gun when he was 12 or so. I used to pay him for chores in shotgun shells for the 11. He sadly broke his neck in a bicycle accident a few years later. I will never sell that gun, no matter how hard the time, or how much I need the cash. It sits stashed away, loaded, and ready for action. Not my first line of defense, but it is dependable, and will knock down any two legged predator anywhere. jason J, tucson

They have to wait a year to see how many residents of South Carolina die this year. Then they'll say all the deaths were caused by Florence.

S.C. people had heart attacks in December because they remembered Florence and were stressed. People had surgeries for tumors and died in January because they were stressed about Florence. People killed in car accidents in February were thinking about Florence and not paying attention to the road. People died of liver failure in March because they were drinking to ease their worries about Florence. People committed suicide in April because their insurance companies wouldn't pay their claims for damage caused by Florence. Etc.

That's how they came up with 3,000 dead in P.R. Anybody with a P.R. death certificate that year died because of the hurricane, no matter what really killed them.

442 Regarding Marlins, look up "Marlin jams", it's a real thing. The sharp hook on the end of a Marlin lever cuts a grove in the aluminum shell carrier causing jams after a couple of hundred rounds. The sharp hook on the lever can be ground smooth and the shell carrier replaced to effect repair. Have the lever smoothed before you use a new Marlin and you don't need to replace the shell carrier. It's a simple fix any decent gunsmith can do. Marlin has know about this problem for decades but has chosen not to correct it.

444 I overruled the doctor once when my mom had a recurrence of c-dif. He prescribed her clindamycin which is one of the worst for that (for recurrence) ... and did not give her flagyl. (flagyl is the standard treatment for c-dif, there's another one as well, something about gram positive, gram negative treatment ...)

She got real weak and I had to take her in, the specialist the next day told me I did the right thing, was like "why'd they give her that". White blood cell count "explodes" trying to fight the c-dif and they get real weak ... I thought I might have killed her for a few hours there, but her doc didn't seem to be paying attention on some issues.
UTIs can be tricky as well ... and treating one thing can lead to some other issue. Would be good if doctors were less busy filling out forms, making sure to protect themselves from lawsuits.
