The Morning Rant

talking ape.jpg
"Look how the media is covering the leaked video of Google execs boo-hooing over Hillary losing the election. Their take is basically that it will give 'ammo' to conservatives who are charging Google with intentionally biasing the results of its search engine. If the video were different, if it showed Google employees whooping it up and throwing MAGA hats into the air because they were so happy Trump won, you can bet that there would be many chin-stroking think pieces written about how the video calls into question Google's objectivity. But seeing them openly weeping at Hillary's loss apparently doesn't raise that question. What's really creepy is how full of themselves the Google execs are, like when Google VP Kent Walker answers a question by saying that Google must ensure that the rise of populism doesn’t turn into 'a world war or something catastrophic'. I had no idea that the guys who run Google believe it's their job to keep history on the correct path. I thought that their job was to provide a search engine that they claim everybody can use. Except, of course, for the Chinese, whose authorities cooked up a scheme with Google to let them see only what they allow. Google's only response to the leaked video is insist, incredibly, that their search engine isn't biased, despite their entire executive and management levels being completely in the tank for the progressive left. So they want us to believe that that we, their prospective users, are being presented with a totally neutral, totally objective search engine where nothing is filtered or left out, but on the other hand, they want to bend history along a progressive path. That's the circle that really can't be squared, and I don't think Google wants you to notice."

The Real Story:

google meeting 01.jpg

A Cautionary Tale

There was some discussion in Wednesday's Rant thread about "the Cloud" and 'owning' vs. 'licensing' software and what does it really mean to 'own' digital property? So I thought this Twitter thread would be appropriate reading. I don't know about you, but this sort of thing makes my blood boil:

I think what's going to happen if Apple and Amazon and other big high-tech firms keep pushing this nonsense is that there's going to be one of those stupid 'class action' lawsuits that Big Tech will lose, some users will be paid maybe a couple of bucks each, and some lawyers will make tens of millions of dollars. The only thing that will really change is that the digital property sellers will have to change the wording in paragraph 47 of their 'terms and conditions' document to spell out that you don't really 'own' the product you're buying.

Shell Shock:

shell shock.jpg
This is another 'never gets old' pic from the election that you need to see the large version (click on it) to really appreciate.

Absolute Moral Authority:

dalai h8r.jpg

Have you seen the new SJW-approved Star Wars character they'll be introducing in the next movie? It's kind of disturbing, so if you're faint of heart, do not click here.

But most places that get a lot of rain are eventually going to reach an over-saturation point. I hope it works out for everyone out there. 102 I watched the Google video. I didn't exactly find it nefarious. The idea of adjusting "filter bubbles" to ensure that you get enough leftism is very sinister (though not secret). The idea of using your gatekeeper status on the Internet to give a silent donation to the Left is extremely sinister.

There was nothing in the video in my opinion that was actually damning but it was very interesting nonetheless and a few things stood out to me:
1. These people are in a huge bubble. I work for a Silicon Valley company. It isn't as big or famous as Google but it is big and smart and very much an organization from the Valley. A lot of what I heard is familiar. SV companies are deeply hard left in general. Google - like my firm - is a political monoculture and that is usually a bad thing for long-term prospects just from the business side.

2. These people are smart, but I doubt they are as smart as they think they are. They want to assess more data and the like, but they are very sure they have all the answers to the world's ills and are very sure that they can deal with those flyover country people who don't vote right through their machinations by just opening the proles' eyes to how great they are and by giving them free services for their own good. This is profoundly arrogant. I work with a lot of arrogant people (and I am one of them, in my own way) but these folks are much more arrogant than I am used to. This is also true, I suspect, of a lot of the rank-and-file. The towering hubris and know-it-allism was just as prevalent in the Q&A as it was during the speeches.

3. The company has no national identity. This is dangerous because they are so powerful. They talked about things like privacy and cryptography and the security of their keys and unwillingness to hand everything over the keys over to the government. This is actually a good thing, but they *never* mentioned what they themselves do with their status of gatekeeper and general data collector. They don't want to be beholden to any nation state or hand over personal data to outside parties but they are perfectly happy to exploit it for their own purposes - including political purposes (such as swinging elections).
I didn't get the impression that they think they are above the law, but perhaps they do think that they are above law as a concept.

From this, I learned that Google does seem to be not a transnational corporation but a *non-national* corporation. Their abuses of free speech on their platforms justify an FTC investigation and possibly a breakup to eliminate their monopoly, but I do think it goes beyond just market rules and regulations. They are not an American firm. They are themselves and nothing more. A company that big starts behaving something like a nation state and if they have no loyalty to their home country - and I don't think they do - then they are a rogue state and should be broken up on that basis alone.

121 I hate, hate, hate Adobe CC.

I hate it because it works like shit and my Cloud Services are constantly giving me headaches. Lost logins and pref files, and the Cloud Library only works right about forty percent of the time. This has cost me a lot of time in the last few years. Since they rolled it out, I'm seeing problems I haven't seen since CS4.

I hate that they have no motivation to address these issues, as they are a monopoly.

But mostly, I hate the fact that I DON'T OWN MY TOOLS. Aside from InDesign IDML, there is very little backwards compatibility, rendering my previous CS6 installation useless for anything other than original artwork.

Why is it simply accepted, industry-wide, that we should rent our g-ddamn livelihoods from Adobe Systems? *spit*

Oddly coincidental, just last night I discovered my old copy of lightroom from before the cloud, had 644 'missing' images.

There was a menu item 'find missing files.' It didn't find any files. What it did was list 644 files that were missing.

I had to do a manual search through the directory tree to find the file, identify the path to the file, and then point lightroom at the now found, previously missing file.

Lucky, finding one often found many others. It still took over an hour to find them all.

I think it is a racket, planned obsolescence from the 1950s school of automobile design.

192 this is a company wide meeting, for all employees, where senior executives are espousing politics.

You don't think that affects the companies actions? You don't think that by ALL of the Execs being on the same political page, they are using company resources to influence their employees.

And you don't think that when they talk about doing more, or not doing enough, for one political party, it has no effect on their employees actions and the direction of a companies actions?

I absolutely think it influences their actions and they said as much. I am not sure it is flatly illegal to do so. But I do think Google and the other monopolies should be investigated as monopolies and broken up. These are pure leftists with no national identity or loyalty. We wouldn't let an ideologically pure rogue state operate without barriers in the US, and Google and their ilk are rapidly approaching that rubicon. They are interfering in our elections, for example, which is legal (or legal-ish) because they are a domestic corporation. The transnationals may need a different regulatory framework because Google is an American firm on paper only.

223 And... Here. We Go. Ronan Farrow in the New Yorker:

The woman, who has asked not to be identified, first approached Democratic lawmakers in July, shortly after Trump nominated Kavanaugh. The allegation dates back to the early nineteen-eighties, when Kavanaugh was a high-school student at Georgetown Preparatory School, in Bethesda, Maryland, and the woman attended a nearby high school. In the letter, the woman alleged that, during an encounter at a party, Kavanaugh held her down, and that he attempted to force himself on her. She claimed in the letter that Kavanaugh and a classmate of his, both of whom had been drinking, turned up music that was playing in the room to conceal the sound of her protests, and that Kavanaugh covered her mouth with his hand. She was able to free herself. Although the alleged incident took place decades ago and the three individuals involved were minors, the woman said that the memory had been a source of ongoing distress for her, and that she had sought psychological treatment as a result.

I know a guy who's been in one. Awesome acceleration, quiet and
comfortable, lots of gadgets. But expensive as hell, and Tesla owns the
software, and when the battery goes, well, you'd better be rich. Life is
full of tradeoffs.

The S models range from 3 to 5.5 seconds 0-60. There's charging stations around the area, but they always seem to be in weird places away from coffee shops etc (as cheap as the real estate can get I suppose). Costco used to have charging stations and got rid of them (heh). They're always full, and always people waiting (damn cheapskates). CA was offering huge rebates, so your $150k car was nearly affordable.

Personally, I'm not keen on the giant computer monitor inside, and the build quality is meh. Plus, I really like hearing/feeling an engine and going through the gears. Seems like you're being powered by a big rubber band in a Tesla. We're going to start hearing what the real downside of these things is in just a few more years.

276 Yes, I imagine so. I'd drive one if I lived in the bay area too.

Every now and then you see some writer who comes up with "Tesla got it all wrong they needed to do something cheap".

No, no, a million times no. Tesla got it exactly right in that regard.

They went for a market that could afford to spend $100K on a second (or third, or fourth, or fifth) car. They went for a market that could accept some glitches in exchange for being the first one with the shiny new thing. And they went for a market where time mattered more than money - that is, solo-driver access to HOV lanes was worth the lease on a $100K car.

They were and probably still are outselling the rest of the $100K sedan market on both coasts.

Where they started to go wrong was ramping up to meet the supposed half-million Model 3 preorders, and promoting the $35K Model 3 price.

First off, it was never going to be a $35K car, not profitably. $43-45K would have been a more reasonable target. It'd have given them room to include the Model S' hatchback, and some real gauges and switchgear.

Model S production line had kinda grown organically, and there are a few hacks in how those things are built. At the volumes those were selling, they could afford that. But that 5000/month Model 3 target needed real production chops, and Elon did not know what he didn't know to use a discredited Rumsfeldism, he could never accept that the processes that the rest of the industry had evolved to their great cost over the last four decades really applied to HIM.

So everyone who knew manufacturing fled and to this day Model 3 manufacturing is ruinously expensive and corrosive to the company's organization.

289 223 And... Here.

310 Point of the anonymous accusation - because it's anonymous, it's impossible to investigate the accuser, to see if she has a history of mental illness, etc.

Because there's no actual date or place given, it's impossible for Kavanaugh to "prove" that he was never there at that time. (not that you can ever prove or disprove something that might have happened 35 years ago) The entire thing is designed to put the accusation "out there" and leave absolutely no way to ever provide any "proof" that it's false. Which is why we have never before allowed secret accusations any credence in this country.

347 In the letter, the woman alleged that, during an encounter at a party, Kavanaugh held her down, and that he attempted to force himself on her.

Right. The back part of town, the part between the river and Lake Pontchartrain, was swamp for a long time. (Still is, really, but the pretend paving disguises it.) The center point is the lowest part.

In contrast, the expensive real estate close to the lake, "Lake Vista" and similar developments, is all landfill put down in the 1920s. I wonder if any of the people who live there know that little fact.

There are some ridges that are sightly higher than the surrounding part. The French Quarter is relatively high, as are Esplanade Ridge and Metairie Road extending out into the suburbs. But generally speaking, if you're here, you're fooked.

All right, so you want to 'ride out' the storm. But for crying out loud, find some high ground to park your freaking automobile.

Car alarms can be heard blaring in the distance throughout the video.

Oil had mixed with the floodwater, Heath said, and she described an overwhelming scent of gasoline as she ventured downstairs.

"Oh God," she said. "All right, this is gross."

The odor soon became so strong it forced her back upstairs to continue filming.

"We lost all of our cars last night," Heath told her viewers, "because the water was above the headlights, even on our SUVs."

Popular actress Fan Bing Bing scored the lowest of all Chines actors and....she hasn't been seen in public for 2+ months!

Her low score was due to some alleged tax impropriety, so she may be in tax prison or worse. Just an ominous coincidence!
Posted by: Lizzy at September 14, 2018 12:06 PM (W+vEI)

North Korea does this, they do a recertifiction from time to time. It is a caste system.
If you have a high score, you can go to the better schools, jobs and areas like Pyong-Yang, and if you don't you are in the hinterlands, and can't get schooling at all.
There are factors like if your ancestors owned property or were Christians, and what your family has done recently, and if there are any complaints about not acting correctly.
They do scheduled "struggle sessions" where each work group gets together and each individual confesses to transgressions and the other members get to chime in too, and everyone better have something to say.

And no one knows what their score is, they just find out when they can't do things or get moved.

Norks are a horrible system where the entire place is a prison camp designed to spy on each other and keep each other enslaved.

492 425 What is attempted rape?

Trying to hook up and getting turned down? Having the girl say no and get up and leave?

This is insane.
___________________

Yeah, it's all pretty vague. He tried to "force himself" on her? How? Did he rip off her clothes (if he did that, seems somebody would have noticed that, like the other guy in the room, the other people at the party, etc.). Or did he just briefly press his erection up against her? I can see how that might offend a female, but we're talking about a high school party with a bunch of drunk 17-year olds. Passes are going to be made, and clumsy attempts at sexual contact are going to happen. Normal teens just shrug it off, without needing psychological counseling to get over it.

The fact is that the girl did not get raped or even hurt, and she was able to leave the room (if the incident ever even happened, which seems doubtful). She also didn't think it was significant enough to make a report or take any action against Kavanaugh or the other guy at the time, or for several decades afterwards. And she is apparently not willing to make her accusation public even now. So this is all just bullshit.

501 The campiness of the original Dr Smith is gone, but yeah they new one
isn't technically "Dr Smith" and it's clear that she is sociopath, who
for some reason just keeps getting the benefit of the doubt, which works
in a campy TV show, but not in this case. She would be marginalized
very quickly an not left to roam freely.

You can change a lot, Robot as an alien, OK, but jeepers why ruin Dr. Smith so badly. Just a waste.

I grew up on LiS in the 60's. Harrison figured out quickly that his equally dark sociopath character would be killed off by any rational group, so that's when the ad libs started. He invented all those put downs. In retrospect I really like the first BW episodes and the evil character, the show sure did a 180 from where it started.

While I've not really seen the new series (I unhooked months ago) I can see going in a different direction. How can you rip-off a character somebody invented? My concern is it's SJW like everything else.

Hemmer said this morning that his family has owned a place near the Outer Banks for 44 years, and the whole family goes there every year -- they call it the Hemmer Haj. One of my favorite scenes was in the 200th episode, where they had a crew filming a version of Stargate, a story within the story kind of thing, and they went through all these different ideas as to how they could have done it.

One version was the sting marrionette version, and they walk up and go through the gate, and of course the strings are all cut when they go through and they fall flat on the ground.

The Man from U.N.C.L.E. had one around the same time which features Robert Vaughn doing the Watusi with a gorilla (a guy in a gorilla costume, of course): "The My Friend the Gorilla Affair." Truly the nadir of the series. Like the LiS story above, it could have been saved, maybe, by casting the whole thing as a dream or a bedtime story being told by an adult or older child character to one or more young children -- but the producers didn't bother.

If transmission fluid is oily, I don't know how to tell between the different oils. We're going to have to have the car towed but it's extremely vexing.

Does anyone here know if a mechanic needs to drain the oil before replacing a timing belt and tensioner? Because the garage did warranty work on that this week and my husband and i are wondering if they dropped the oil and forgot to fill it, although they say they didn't.

627 Berkserker -

We drove the car to Boston and back in August, no problem. A day or two after getting back, it developed a rattle, so I took it in. The garage guys looked it all over, said the only thing they could find was that it was 2 quarts low on oil and the valves were dry. That sounded weird to us because the car has never burned oil (and there was no smoke, etc.) but we told them go ahead and change the oil (it still had about 500 miles before the recommended change). So they did.

Got it home, my son drove it to work and a couple errands, and within a couple of days the rattle was back and worse. About 50 miles since the oil change. We decided to take it elsewhere.

The mechanic at the new place turned it on, listened, and asked if we had had timing belt work done recently. We had had it replaced 18 months ago as part of routine maintenance, at the first place, and it was still under warranty. So back to the first place.

The problem was the timing belt tensioner, but they replace the whole thing under warranty, and we got it back last night. My husband drove it home (about 2 miles) and said it was fine.

This morning I take it 3/4 of a mile down the road and all of a sudden lights came on that I had never seen and I felt a power drain, although the car was still running. It was the engine light and the VSA light.

My husband got the car home, checked the oil, and it was dry. After calling the garage and asking if they had drained the oil, which they denied, my husband put 4.5 quarts in to fill it.

And there it is, in my driveway, until we figure out what to do with it.

Yeah, like people mentioned it would most likely go into the radiator fluid. When it happened to me I didn't see it in the radiator fluid either. Somehow the oil and water and what ever else seemed to mix. But the engine was fried, too expensive to bother fixing.

It's the sudden loss of power thing. That was the clue. Fine then -- no bang or anything, just weak.

634 bluebell, mine did the same thing, as for where the oild went? it's like the sock missing in the drier/ I have no idea!

635 If a BMW doesn't have an in-line six, it's not a BMW.

Funny, I've owned several, and despite my lust for an E34 M5 wagon I've never owned a six. They've all been V8s.

The M5 has been probably the most reliable car I've ever owned. Now, having said that, it'll probably blow a VANOS seal or something.

I'm currently doing the cam chain on our '01 X5, I need to go out and finish the VANOS seal job now. Waiting for a couple more parts.

The cam chain guides in those engines (M62/M62TU/S62) are basically safe-lifed at 150K miles. They crumble after that, but very few fail before that point.

It's a nasty job, lot of hours but not hard nor overly expensive if you can DIY.

636 It's either blown or not blown.
The oil has to go somewhere.

Where are the knowledge men?

It must be a difficult question you have, bluebell.

I think they kinda go like a Hemingway character described bankruptcy... gradually, then suddenly.

I noticed using more oil then usual for a week, then was climbing a hill and sudden power loss, all at once.

638 It is, Oren. I'm sure AOP and Berserker are cogitating on it. This isn't easy at all.

641 Is that honda a V6? Honda has some weird fuel economy thing called a VCM (variable cylinder management) that deactivates cylinders. I remember reading about this stuff when researching new cars. The system literally shuts off cylinders when not needed to get higher MPG, and supposedly if this system goes nuts it can cause major oil consumption exactly like you're experiencing. Judging by the lower power thing it could be you have cylinders being shut off at the wrong time, like under power. I think the oil consumption goes up because of low tension rings honda uses, and a shit off cylinder not doing an actual power stroke can bring oil up in the cylinder. Its possible you have multiple symptoms of a failed VCM. Its seems to be the thing on those engines, and I remember people having problems. Not sure about the 4 cylinder engines, but the V6s definitely had this problem.

642 willow, we have a 2001 Suburban that I am hoping will last until the last kid has finished college. It should, it only has 177k on it. It's been a good car except for the time fairly early on when the transmission went out, except for reverse, and I had to back it up from the median of a 55 mph road all the way up a hilly, curvy road for 3/4 mile back to my house.

Posted by: bluebell at September 14, 2018 01:26 PM (C1PQi)

643 Thank you Berserker. Yes, it's a V-6 with the VCM thing. My husband won't buy a car with less than 6 cylinders, LOL.

I'll mention this to him so he can tell the garage people to look for that, once we figure out where to have it towed.

There is a damn good chance that is your problem. I would say thats probably whats going on.

Bluebell, I am not familiar with Hondas at all. Some engines use oil pressure to tension the timing chain or belt. To lose 4 and half quarts of ol, you have either a huge leak (which should really mess up the car), or else it is getting burned in the engine, and the catalytic converter is preventing you from seeing the blue smoke that normally results from that. I doubt that engine oil is leaking into the transmission.

For now, I would suggest that the shop forgot to add oil. I would suggest that now that the oil has been refilled, drive it cautiously in local trips, and watch the oil level. If oil continues to disappear, assume it is being burned. It might not be an internal engine problem; there could be issues with the external pipes and plumbing related to crankcase ventilation.

Get the car to an Autozone or similar parts store, and get them to put their code reader on it. Normally a free service. If it returns trouble codes, ask their advice.

My normal recommendation for those with specific makes of "import" cars is that, once out of warranty, find a local independent shop that specializes in your make, or maybe yours plus one or two others, with factory-trained mechanics. Many very good mechanics get tired of the rat race of working for dealers, and start their own speciality shop, or wind up working in one.

647 I would say bring it to a honda dealer just because they may be more up in whats going on with their engines rather than handy henry at the corner garage.

Posted by: Berserker-Dragonheads Division at September 14, 2018 01:35 PM (9Om/r)

648 Thank you also, AOP. I'm send my husband a screen shot of your comments too. I'm not sure we're brave enough to actually drive it anywhere - I know I'm not. My husband will turn it on when he gets back home and check the oil again (I told him I'm not turning the key on that thing no matter what).

Thank you all for your help. I know you can't really diagnose a car over the internet! But we'd already lost faith in our old shop which we had been going to for many years, but which changed hands in the last couple of years and has gone downhill.

Posted by: bluebell at September 14, 2018 01:37 PM (C1PQi)

649 Good idea, Berserker.

Posted by: bluebell at September 14, 2018 01:38 PM (C1PQi)

650 Sounds like Berserker may be on the right track on this, Bluebell. I will defer to his knowledge.

The catalytic converter has the ability to mask oil burning for a while. Used to be, if oil was being burnt, the car would lay down a big coil of stinky blue smoke.

Also this!

There are a lot of honda "tuners" out there at specialty shops. There is actually a way do deactivate, or bypass that VCM. The honda tuners will know all about that. If all else fails, thats a good path to investigate.

Posted by: Berserker-Dragonheads Division at September 14, 2018 01:40 PM (9Om/r)

652 I'm wondering, if it is that VCM, if it's even going to be worth fixing on an 11-year-old car. Ugh.

Well, just searching around, the bypass for the VCM is called the VCM muzzler. Seems to be under $100 for the parts. Might be worth looking into IF thats your problem to start with. It does seem to be the text book case you got going there.

bummer bluebell, but it looks like they guys have given you solid leads on figuring it all out.

good luck.
