The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

The first problem with self-identifying as “conservative” in any way is that the label has been thoroughly corrupted. When someone like Jonah Goldberg is considered the face of conservatism, the label no longer has meaning. Goldberg started out on the far Left working for Ben Wattenberg at PBS. His “journey” to the Right got him only as far neo-conservatism, which has always been a Progressive heresy. The fact these people are allowed to call themselves conservative says conservatism is a meaningless label. The Zman Blog

Quote II

“I completely support House Republican efforts to have President Trump declassify the FISA [Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act] warrant applications, the Bruce Ohr/Chris Steele interactions, and all other relevant information regarding allegations of corruption in the DOJ & FBI. It is increasingly clear it was the Obama Administration who politicized the DOJ/FBI, not the Trump Administration,” Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC)

A Moron could make big coin with #I'mwithDickHead apparel.

One would think that Kaepernick would have shown some appreciation for the public relations risk Nike is enduring on his behalf by being loyal and not acting in a manner that will threaten to steal away Nike’s profits, but that isn’t the case.

While Nike is paying Kaepernick millions per the endorsement deal, and he stands to make untold amounts more through royalties of his endorsed apparel sales, he has nevertheless launched his own brand that indisputably will compete, at least at some level, with Nike

The ONT Musical Interlude

September 12, 2003, US singer songwriter Johnny Cash died of respiratory failure aged 71. One of the most influential musicians of the 20th century, known as "The Man in Black." He traditionally started his concerts by saying, "Hello, I'm Johnny Cash." Had the 1969 US No.2 & UK No.4 single 'A Boy Named Sue', plus 11 other US Top 40 singles. Cash also had his own US TV show in late 60s early 70s via thisdayinmusic.com

The Left Staying classy as ever.

“The [left’s] frustration has boiled over at points,” the Times understates. “Annie Clark, a spokeswoman for Ms. Collins, provided The New York Times with copies of a letter and multiple voice mail messages addressed to the senator using vulgar language and outright threats.”

One example of a threat is a “caller [who] told a 25-year-old female staff member at one of Ms. Collins’s Maine offices that he hoped she would be raped and impregnated.”

Collins has also had some 3,000 coat hangers mailed to her office (a reference to the back alley abortion).

Protesters have shown up at Collins’ private home in Bangor.

And "they" wonder why we have CCW permits.

Diabetes, is a dastardly disease. Good news on the pharmaceutical side. Tonight's Feel Good Story of The Day.

A ground-breaking clinical trial of a new investigational drug has been launched to help prevent and manage Type 1 diabetes, and researchers have already dosed the first patient in the world with the treatment.

The drug, which was developed by scientists Clinical Research Facility (CRF) at Cardiff and Vale University Health Board (UHB), aims to help the regrowth of insulin making ‘beta’ cells of the pancreas, which are lost in patients living with the disease. Despite being an early phase trial, the CRF has now dosed two patients with this new drug.

6 'A human rights crisis': US accused of failing to protect citizens from gun violence

Amnesty report recommends universal background checks, age limits, military-style weapons ban and a national gun registry
https://gu.com/p/9cxcc/stw

American gun violence is "a human rights crisis" and the US government's refusal to pass gun control laws represents a violation of its citizens' right to life, according to a new report by Amnesty International.

"The USA is failing to protect individuals and communities most at risk of gun violence, in violation of international human rights law," Amnesty argues. "The right to live free from violence, discrimination and fear has been superseded by a sense of entitlement to own a practically unlimited array of deadly weapons."

To address the crisis of gun homicide, suicide and injury that leaves about 38,000 Americans dead and 116,000 wounded each year, Amnesty recommends the US pass a sweeping set of gun control measures, including universal background checks, the requirement of a valid license to buy a gun, no gun purchases for those under 21, a ban on certain military-style weapons and ammunition, and the creation of a digitized national gun registry.

Congress should also pass a federal law prohibiting carrying guns in public "unless there is a credible justification for doing so", Amnesty argues...

By framing gun violence in terms of human rights, Amnesty is attempting to use international human rights law as a counterweight to Americans' constitutional right to keep and bear arms, experts said. While the invocation of human rights law could be a powerful rhetoric tool for advocates, they said, it was unlikely to make much difference in a courtroom. The United States has largely resisted being held accountable by international human rights bodies.

134 ...40 I read today about 80 foot waves in the Atlantic. is that normal with a hurricane?

Posted by: four seasons

Katrina's waves seriously blasted a few of the production rigs out in the Gulf.

Production rigs differ from the manned Exploration Rigs, in that they're un-manned, and basically are platforms which support pipe manifolds, bleed-gas powered generators for the pumps, electrical panels and such. They'll have crew housing, kept empty but ready, a helipad and some emergency supplies.

Nominal "above sea level" of those platforms will be from forty to sixty feet.

I do believe that there's photos out there of a couple of them doing pretty good imitations of steel pretzels, in Katrina's aftermath.

Those 80 & 90 ft. waves exist out where the Continental Shelf drops off and things get deep. Couple hundred miles offshore.

We're blessed that the inshore Gulf I so very shallow, in that the truly giant waves simply can't form in shallow water.

Still though... Hurricane Ike sent plenty of twenty foot waves crashing over all of the Galveston Piers, damaging all, utterly destroying the pier which supported the historic Balinese Room.

I feel badly for the East Coasters.... they've not had as much Hurricane Practice of late, and I hope they've studied the HELL out of the various Gulf Coast storms, the community responses and results.

Meanwhile... prayers up for all in the path.

Maybe not the specifics, but I can relate. Usually takes one of my buddies calling or dropping by to get me wanting to deal with other humans at all. much difference in a courtroom. The United States has largely resisted

254 @Insomniac

I'm not a good Christian and I don't know where you stand on praying but two things, man.

One, you are in my prayers each night that you be comforted and encouraged.

Two, praying that I do my best, to the best of my ability and with my whole heart has helped my work and, in the past, my dating attitude.

That for what it's worth, sometimes you need air support. Or above-the-air support. You aren't interested in just chasing tail, like I was once. So try praying, not for some woman, but just that you will try with your whole heart, to the best of your ability to meet someone.

256 Truth. I have a shitload of things I'm trying to
un-learn. It helps a little to know you mislearned things and have some
idea why you did, though the flip side is being less confident on what
you re-learn. Just hoping the meds actually help, which...well, I'm not
really sure about.

Understanding the origins of our "issues" really helps, and it's never too late. My narcissistic mother did a number on my self-confidence, and only now, at 63, am I seeing more clearly how deeply that penetrated. Even if I shook off some of the dysfunctional behaviors I picked up from her, I still have deep-seated feelings of inadequacy. Like a tuning fork, they still resonate when struck.
Meds are supposed to get you to a point when you can take off on your own. They won't be the answer, but I hope they can lift you to where you get a better "view" of things.

280 This afternoon, the weather being tolerable, I set out to get some yard work done before the apocalypse strikes.

Settle into the seat of the lawn tractor, turn the key. No start. Well that's strange, usually fires right off. Try again. Nope. Again, again. Crap!

So, as many of you know, the plans for getting something done began to fade. One develops a nose for these things.

Check, no fuel in carb bowl. Working forward from the fuel tank, line is clear, water trap is clear and has fuel in it, fuel filter is clear and has fuel in it. Disconnect the output of the fuel pump, and turn the engine over a bit. Nothing.

So, fuel pump is FUBAR. I pulled it off and took it apart. Here's what I found:
https://preview.tinyurl.com/y7s8auj5

Gosh, I wonder why all of the corrosion on the check valves? /sarc

If you look closely, you'll also see an eyebrow of rubber valve stuff on the right valve. The diaphragm was also fatigued and cracked.

With any luck, local small engine parts supplier has a new pump in stock.

I am that way also due to my upbringing but I have managed over time to not let perfection be the enemy of the good - or even the "just OK".I used to golf with my dad as a teenager. It was 3 hours of hearing what I did wrong on every swing. Soul crushing indeed. After leaving home, I never played again for 20 years. But I took up the game again - with friends - and you know what? It can be a lot of fun to go out with your pals and walk around and drink beer and bullshit even if you do suck. The occasional good shot is cause for celebration, the crapfest is cause for hilarity, and the lucky ones are for storytelling. Things can still be fun if they're not perfect.

287 Ooof, what a day.

Had to take my wife's SUV in for servicing this ayem. The shop supplied a ride to work; I arrived an hour early. When the SUV was ready, I got a ride to the shop from my son, after which we would have lunch. Then after work, I would take the SUV straight to a meeting.

Or such was the plan.

First foulup happened when I gave son the wrong street address, saying West instead of East. The same text had directions, but he checked only the address and relied on his GPS. By the time he picked me up, we had lost 30 of the 90 minutes I had allotted for this operation.

I worked later than planned to make up the extra time I took for lunch, and got in my 8 hours with enough time to make the meeting.

Didn't happen.

One tire picked up a spike and went flat fast. I changed the tire -- only to find that the spare was flat, too. Tread came off the rim. Called son for another ride -- pulling him away from the homemade pizza that had just come out of the oven.

Off we went to a Sam's Club, the only tire business open after 7:00. The techs said the tire was irreparable, so I had to buy a new one. Son returned me to where I had left the SUV, I put on the new tire, and finally got home, presumably long after the meeting ended.

OK, this got away from me, and I'm racing against a weakening battery so I can't edit.

I just want to tell all of the Horde: CHECK YOUR SPARE TIRES. Make sure you'll be able to use them.

I now have a chore for this weekend.

320 315 There are 3 explanations about why Johnny Cash wore black. One is the post-facto one 'that he wore black in support of the poor, the wrongly-imprisoned" bullshit. The second is that given by his old tour manager 'It cuts down on laundry expenses on the road'. The third. and most likely, is that Johnny Cash was a Ninja.

Here's the latest update from my cousin, the retired meteorologist. He used to run the NWS station at GSP here in Greenville, SC (well until it expanded and the rules required a Ph.D. He still ran it, just had Ph.D over him, who sat at a desk and looked like he was in charge).

He's got about 3 monitors and keeps up with all the data feeds and provides all of us with our own forecasts:

-------------------------------------
There are some significant changes in strength reflected on the 11pm advisory from NHC. Some high level wind shear (a change of wind direction and/or speed with height, in this case increased speeds aloft) have disrupted the hurricane, caused weakening, and opened up the eyewall on one side. The shear is expected to subside, but it will be hard for the hurricane to regain its former intensity. That's good for wind damage potential along the coast, but not much else.

The storm has also continued to grow in size and the surge will be about the same as if the hurricane was stronger. Also, the weakened hurricane will be at least as dangerous as an inland flood producer - and perhaps will be more deadly in that regard. Catastrophic flooding is more closely associated with tropical storms, tropical depressions, and decaying hurricanes than with fully mature, major hurricanes.

The worst weather for us will probably be Friday night through Sunday night or early Monday, with an emphasis on Saturday night and Sunday.

I've attached the latest track image from NHC - notice how the "envelope" or "cone" widens and the area within becomes huge after the storm gets well inland. That means very low confidence in the forecast track at those points in time, and the center of circulation could be about anywhere within that envelope. Steering currents become very weak and the storm could meander, which is common. Nevertheless, it's so big that we'll get bad weather. The forecast track is probably the worst possible case for us.
----------------------------

By "us" he means the Greenville, SC area. I couldn't include the track graphic he put in there, but you can see the latest.

333 Ian Galt (and Man from Athens) no need to guess about Chicago's casualty figures - as I've noted before, just go to heyjackass.com - an amazing website that tracks Chicago lethal gun-play with the sorts of metrics and graphics you'd find in a thorough stock/company report from and industry analyst.

September, so far: 14 shot and kilt, 72 wounded. Note the high wounded/KIA ratio, compared to the long-term 20th/21st century average of 2 or 3 to 1. This is probably explained mostly by poor gun handling and the absence of artillery (so far) in Chicago's violence - artillery being the big killer in land warfare since it achieved its modern form. (of course dirty water/exposure are the other big killers, but we're talking kinetic, weapons-related killin' here)

In the town where I lived, we had a railroad spur that got a freight train once a month. That train traveled at 5mph.

One day I had my cousin riding with me (in a different county) and when I came to a RR crossing, I looked both ways and saw a train about a mile away or more.

So I started driving through the crossing and that was when I discovered the crossing was very, very rough, and I had to drive very, very slowly.

Once on the other side, I looked at the train and realized it was an Amtrak Passenger train traveling at 130 mph or so and it missed us by fifty feet.

My cousin never went anywhere with me again.

I did not see so much sympathy for terrorists as some gentle, maybe willfully ignorant whitewashing of other issues: The refugees going from Syria through Turkey to Europe are portrayed as overwhelmingly women, children, and elderly men, which has been roundly and soundly debunked as the opposite of reality, and Muslims living in France are portrayed as being shut out of advancement opportunities by the ethnic French, rather than due to the Muslims' own self-segregation.

Substitute?

Guiness Stout.

And if you've ever enjoyed a genuine Steak & Guiness Pie, you'd understand.

I think Negra Modelo is the smoothest dark beer, ever brewed. Love the stuff.

But if they're illegal boosters....

I'll step up the Guiness. Heavier, but just as smooth. Not for the immature palate.

AWESOME though, with a fine cigar, after a Prime steak dinner.

Sublime.

Those that eschew, fail to appreciate a meaningful bit of living in this life.

443 A genuine, UK brewed and bottled, Newcastle Ale is my favorite beer, for straight up taste and flavor.

Close second, is a Negra Modelo, no salt, no lime.

Bit heavier, but smoother, and a close 2nd in straight up taste and flavor.

Sadly, since the demise of the Busch Signature Copper Lager, there is not a U.S. distributed beer, which compares.

Micro Breweries disqualified.... due to distribution limitations.

A good copper or dark lager or ale, is as to a perfectly cooked Sirloin steak is to a perfectly delightful, grilled chicken breast.

I won't even illustrate that comparison. If I had to explain, you wouldn't understand.

Oh yes, the Guinness in Dublin, and all of Ireland, is just nothing like what is here in the States. The pubs serve it perfectly, and the price difference between pubs is negligible.

And the taps are always clean. Because there are so many pubs, if one gets lazy, the customers abandon it and go down the street to a competitor. It doesn't take long to fix the problem. The Irish, and their friends, know their Guinness.

Entirely different flavor profile, actually.

The relate, as to the darker end of the beer spectrum, but that's as close as they get.

A real, genuine, Pint of Newcastle Ale...from Ol' Blighty... it would make Shiner's best weep in frustration.

And I say this as an occasional visitor to the Shiner Brewery and Tasting Room.

Serve that Shiner with your favorite steak. You'll enjoy it.

Two days later, try the same cut of steak from the same chef, but with the Newcastle, instead.

I won't have to explain the difference, thereafter.

483 A genuine, UK brewed and bottled, Newcastle Ale is my favorite beer, for straight up taste and flavor.

I just noticed it now when I clicked on the site because my phone asked me if I wanted to overwrite an .exe file so it's on my phone. I remember commenters mentioning this over the past few weeks. I didn't click on an ad.

My phone as been hijacked twice, it will heat up fast, battery dies fast, Bluetooth stops working, it's running in safe mode which you are only suppose to do from a hard reboot, and the clue that it's hacked is that my morning clock alarms will be turned on and one almarm is labelled in bold letters "lol m".

Just thought I give some details as I know y'all don't want this going on. If I get the pop-up asking me if I want to overwrite a downloaded .exe file, I'll write it down as I clicked to close it out fast because I thought it was a pop-up ad blocker working but the .exe file stood out.

Hope this helps, Pixy. Thanks!

No, just the random iphone "you won something" ad, that pops over the whole site and forces me to close that tab in safari and reload the site (and hope for a different ad).

Originally neocons were Democrats who became somewhat "Republicans" because the Democrat Party had moved so far left after the 1968 convention. Mostly they were liberal socialists that respected the US and the Military unlike the main Democrat Party who are communists that hate both. And from what I have seen these "converted" Democrats don't really have a conservative bone in their body.

The secret my friend gave me is to use the Better Than Bouillon Beef Base, a heaping teaspoon in one cup of warm water instead of just water. Makes the absolute best au jus (when strained, have to get the whole garlic and thyme sprigs out of it, along with the celery/coriander/mustard seeds and black peppercorns). I also use a leaner cut, the bottom round, with the fat cap on top so the fat drizzles down through the meat during the long cooking time.

As I said way above, the leftovers made into open faced sandwiches with the au jus is to die for.

Sandy wasn't even a Cat 1 iirc when it came ashore in 'jersey. But it hung around, and hung around, and hung around. Flooding was the main issue. It also spun off a bunch of tornadoes.

I suspect flooding will be the main issue with ol' Flo. The 'usual suspects' in low-lying areas will get slammed. Which is definitely Trumps fault for forcing them to live there.

You are correct. Karl Rove had to hand over the keys to the Amazing Weather Machine which he previously used to direct Katrina. Barry knowing that his team would be in control promised to use the Weather Machine for All That Is Good And Holy by turning it into a fire machine that burned down half of east Texas.

Probably about 10 years ago we had serious flooding in the Catskills in NYS. After a year or so, FEMA brought in at least a couple dozen trailers and parked them in an open field near the river. Needless to say they sat there until the wheels rusted out and the tires were stolen. Probably scrapped after a few more years....But FEMA said we are just getting prepared...for what?

772 That Zman quote is pure bullshit. Sure, Jonah is a douchebag, but he's misdiagnosing it. Ben Wattenberg was "far left"? That's like calling Lindsay Graham Alt-right.

And frankly there should be a ban on "neoconservative". It seems to have degenerated into a completely useless term, as Orwell said of "fascism", it means little more than "something not desirable." (And Goldberg is actually a half-hearted libertarian, which he describes as "fusionist" in an act of historical legerdemain.)

I'm becoming much less confident about the long than the short term. Right wing thought is collapsing into incoherence. They're either selling out completely, or moving to a new left-ish repudiation of reason itself.

OTOH, I'm starting to be a bit more hopeful about this November. I suspect we are, right now, at about the bottom of our support. Unless, of course, GOP campaign consultants can figure a way to throw everything away, which is always possible. I sometimes suspect we'd be better off with MORE Grahams if we could, in exchange, get rid of the Roves.

Which is 2600 too many. Its hard for me to believe that bureaucrats in DC can understand hurricanes in FL or TX and wildfires in CA and AZ better than the state governments.

What happens is we end up with freezers filled with bags of ice for years, and trailers sunk in mud in Arkansas - helping no one except those who were paid lavishly to provide the stuff.

Walmart, HEB stores and the Cajun navy were more responsive than FEMA.
