The artist has a definite affinity for the male form. Those are well rendered bodies. I absolutely don't get it. Why would Dante and Virgil want to bite each other in the neck? Who's the guy on the ground who's out of the fight? What are the Cardinal and the Toga Party guy looking at? Did they bet this fight? Why is the demon laughing, did he rig this bet? However, since this painting speaks to something that has been gnawing (SWIDT?) at me for about a month or more, I give you something I read recently - The Letter From Beyond.
I quote: It is the story of a young woman, Anne, who met an unexpected death, faced God at her private judgment, and was condemned to that terrible forever of suffering in Hell. Anne relates her fate in a letter, which she delivers to a friend, Claire, in a dream. You can imagine Claire's shock. She had heard the news about her friend's car accident and sudden death only that morning. It upset her since she realized Anne was not a good Catholic, and she said some prayers for Anne's soul. Then, that night, she had a dream, so vivid it seemed real. In it, Anne delivered a letter addressed to her. Do not pray for me, the letter read, for I am condemned. I didn't take God seriously. I didn't take advantage of the many graces He gave me in this life. I made a god of pleasure, of my own self-satisfaction and whims, of the good things of this life. And now I am suffering an afterlife of eternal torment. https://tinyurl.com/y8cnajnc It's been really bothering me lately. We've seen other William-Adolphe Bouguereau paintings before. Usually nudes from the classics. His ability to paint skin tones and physiques is as good as any artist. But today's painting takes those attributes and puts them in an incredibly powerful image. I find much of his work exquisite but this one adds power. Frazetta could have done this.
That Bouguereau's works went out of fashion because it wasn't in the avant-garde of art, as if there can be only one TRUE style, is disturbing but not surprising. Posted by: JTB at September 13, 2018 10:17 AM (V+03K) 185

OK, how about something cheery? And this is cheery, despite how I'll introduce it.
One of the most popular music hall performers of the late Victorian and Edwardian era was Marie Lloyd. https://tinyurl.com/y88vjupz Known as "Queen of the Music Hall," she began performing as a child, making a professional debut in 1885 at the age of 15. Her performances were lively, with a good deal of back-and-forth with the audience, but they were criticized as risqué, and she spent her career in conflict with theatrical censors. She suffered through abusive marriages, financial reverses and changes in taste, so that by 1919, her star was on the wane. Luckily for her, that year she was given her most famous song, "My Old Man (Said Follow the Van)," which remained a staple in her act until her death in 1922. In 2006, the BBC featured actress Jessie Wallace in a documentary of her life, Miss Marie Lloyd, Queen of the Music Hall, with recreations of her act. Here's Wallace in "My Old Man." Every time I watch this, I weep, whether it's from misguided nostalgia, anger / depression or because I'm just psychologically fucked up, I don't know. But for you, it's two minutes of sheer joy: https://tinyurl.com/z3vjhk9 Posted by: Mary Poppins' Practically Perfect Piercing at September 13, 2018 10:29 AM (kqsXK) 251

This happens in Canto XXX, among the Falsifiers. Capocchio, old Dante chum and "transmuter of metals" is being attacked by Schiacchi, who in life posed as another man to gain an inheritance. Dorothy Sayers' is the go-to translation: you always know where you are, who's who, and what the moral is.

"Judas I can see but Brutus and Cassius did what they did in a vain attempt to preserve the Republic and prevent a monarchy."
Brutus was close enough to Caesar to be a son (some rumors said he WAS), and Cassius, despite being an early opponent, was appointed to various offices by Caesar after his defeat. It was a thing with Caesar to put defeated enemies in places that looked like he'd forgiven them; he likely intended to do that with his former son-in-law Pompey except the little Pythagoran prick had killed him. I guess Dante thought Cassius should have been loyal after being appointed to an office? Even the Government of PR admits this is a 6 month total. If someone was speeding and died in a car wreck 5 1/2 months after the hurricane, the study says well he must have been speeding because the hurricane gave him PTSD, so he's a casualty of the hurricane and is included in the total.
I'm serious, wish I was just being sarcastic, but I'm not. Posted by: Tom Servo at September 13, 2018 10:42 AM (k1TUh) Not exactly. There is no attempt to attribute cause. It is a straight numbers game. Here is what the study says about its methodology: For observed mortality, we used records for all deaths occurring from September 2017-February 2018, provided by the Puerto Rico Vital Statistics Records (PRVSR) division of the Puerto Rico Department of Health (DoH). The estimates of excess all-cause mortality attributable to the hurricane are the result of comparing the projections for the census and displacement scenarios to observed mortality in the vital registration data. So, yes, all deaths in the 6 months after the hurricane, if they are more than a calculated average adjusted by other factors, are "excess." This has never been done for calculating deaths in any other event. Ever. Posted by: blaster at September 13, 2018 10:51 AM (Z5y53) 392

Also, bear in mind that Trump divested his company to Eric and Don Jr. and everything is in a blind trust. There is zero chance the liquor board or whoever in DC is going to deny a multi million dollar hotel in the heart of DC a liquor license because one of it's shareholders makes liberals upset. Here is what the report says:
We estimate that in mid-September 2017 there were 3,327,917 inhabitants and in mid-February 2018 there were 3,048,173 inhabitants of Puerto Rico, representing a population reduction by approximately 8%. We factored this into the migration "displacement scenario" and compared it with a "census scenario," which assumed no displacement from migration in the hurricane's aftermath. We found that, historically, mortality slowly decreased until August 2017, and that rates increased for the period of September 2017 through February 2018, with the most dramatic increase shown in the displacement scenario accounting for post-hurricane migration. Bouguereau became a student at the École des Beaux-Arts.[4] To supplement his formal training in drawing, he attended anatomical dissections and studied historical costumes and archeology. He was admitted to the studio of François-Édouard Picot, where he studied painting in the academic style. Dante and Virgil in Hell (1850) was an early example of his great, Neo-Classical works.
So he was just doing this as an exercise, to learn anatomy. He probably didn't enjoy it. Posted by: Steve and Cold Bear at September 13, 2018 11:12 AM (/qEW2) 516

May said, basically, we never asked Freddie and if you wanted to know you should have asked him before he died."
I remember another interview years back where one of the band members said they were in the studio working on it, and they just started throwing Italian words into it because it was operatic and a lot of fun, and it was mostly just a big fun day of goofing around for their own entertainment. And that none of them ever thought it would turn out to be so popular. There's a lot of neat little classical structuures they throw into that song that you don't really notice - first of all, the mood and tempo changes at various points give it an epic storytelling vibe, with an opening, then dramatic action, finally a denouement, and the "poor boy" sets up a statement/counterstatement Greek Chorus effect with "will you let me go?" "BISMILLAH, NO! WE WILL NOT LET YOU GO!!!" And of course, if you're going to go all the way over the top, the final ending just HAS to be a giant GONGNGNGNG.. Bougueareau's technical excellence is just jaw-dropping. The head of the dark haired man, the bitee - is just perfect. And it's hard to get the proportions right when a head is tilted at that angle, there's reverse foreshortening going on. The ginger devil's body is all out of whack and misshapen - look at his ribcage. The profile on Dante - classical Roman. This is just a great work, one by Bougueaureau I hadn't expected.
