Serena Williams Loses To Better Player And her Own Temper, But Mostly To A Better Player

I don't have much interest in tennis, aside from the sartorial excesses and pulchritude of some of the women players. But this egregious example of our current worship of celebrity is galling. Williams broke the rules and got her ass kicked by a better and more dignified player. She should have respected the outcome, which wasn't in doubt, and shown some grace in defeat. And the fans should have recognized the better player instead of braying in support of their tribal favorite.

Athletics is the great equalizer. Skill, talent, perseverance, toughness, resilience. Nothing else matters between the lines, least of all the number of brain-dead front-running fans who cheer you in spite of your unsportsmanlike behavior.

I happened to see Williams' semifinal match at a bar on Thursday (because the Yankees weren't playing) while enjoying a cocktail, and I was struck by how flatfooted and out of shape she seemed. I was surprised that she won the match, although it seemed to a knowledgeable friend next to me that she didn't win it as much as her opponent lost it. Regardless, she behaved correctly, and the interview after the match was a reasonably good example of grace in victory.

Too bad she can't handle defeat. It will tarnish her legacy, and that is appropriate.

6 Sort of fitting that my sum total awareness of this event consists of who won, and what a classless nitwit Williams was /is.

This goes back to McEnroe, but tennis has long been a stupidly managed sport. Argue with the umpire ..... bye bye! Next. Every sport has human refs. Most don't tolerate stupid players mouthing off.

Oh and it's sexist because the ref was Hispanic and the other player is Asain. Then her coach basically says that he coaches and they all do it so big deal. Now ESPN is lobbying to change the rules.

And itsaughable to hear Serena scream that she has never cheated in her life when it's pretty obvious that she has been taken PED's for a while (testosterone) to keep her edge past 26-28 when most women tenniis players begin to fade naturally.

She doth protest Too Much.

66 I coached girls high school tennis for 8 years, and women's college tennis for another 3. I doubt Serena will be able to sustain top tier play for much longer. Once the skills drop with the normal deterioration that comes with age, there's just not anything you can do to compensate, like in some other sports. Experience can't get you that extra 100th of a second needed for proper positioning or hitting a winner. The geometry is relatively simple and stays the same. I'd say, with the exception of sprinting, tennis is the most unforgiving of aging. Especially for men, who've taken the game to near the limit of human performance.

She knew she lost and she knew why she lost and she was angry that it happened. She knew she was better than that and had been better than that. But that day was not her day or she did something or had something happen that put her off her game.

Whenever I look at the times I got angry the worst and acted the worst I realized I was angry at ME!

And fame/celebrity/notoriety can ruin a person. They like being treated like a queen/king (and who wouldn't?)

But soon some ppl start to think they deserve it. And maybe believe they're not getting enough or perhaps they are not in the lime light as often lately for some reason.

This can be corrosive unless a steady outside force is there to humble you without destroying your confidence.

Few have a person or object that can manage that and a lot has to come from within.

She's young yet. She could recover from this. It will depend on her and if she can get rid of the negative forces around her.

138 Willowed from an earlier thread discussing George Washington, but I thought it was beautiful:

We see faceless bureaucrats boast of abusing their position, and judges who scribble their preferences on the Constitution and call it law. But Washington said "The Constitution which at any time exists, till changed by an explicit and authentic act of the whole people, is sacredly obligatory upon all. The very idea of the power and the right of the people to establish Government presupposes the duty of every individual to obey the established Government. All obstructions to the execution of the Laws, all combinations and associations, under whatever plausible character, with the real design to direct, control, counteract, or awe the regular deliberation and action of the constituted authorities, are destructive of this fundamental principle, and of fatal tendency."

We see academics teach young people to suppress speech they disagree with. But Washington said this: "If the freedom of speech is taken away then dumb and silent we may be led, like sheep to the slaughter."

Now, the businessmen who run giant Social Media Corporations are routinely suppressing traffic, censoring and shadowbanning even mainstream conservative bloggers, educators, candidates and sitting congressmen. Just to be arrogant jerks, they even shut down the president's Twitter feed. They claimed it was an accident. It wasn't. They don't dare do it--yet. But they want to.

And when the Deep State of his day whispered "Let us make you Ruler!", Washington rebuked them. The Father of our Country resisted the temptation to tyranny. Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama did not.

He was not perfect. He could swear, gamble, carouse and womanize. But when it counted, he always put his country first. Kind of reminds me of someone...

Maybe we should be measuring ourselves to see if we live up to his standard.

139 Athletes are competitive. Sometimes, that competitive nature unfortunately overwhelms sportsmanship. Professional sports needs to get rid of umpires and referees whenever possible, IMHO. Technology has made it possible to rid SOME sports of arbitrary judgment calls that ruin games/matches through missed calls.
I'm a third generation Yankees fan. I know that's probably an unpopular admission, but hear me out. The Yankees were the benefit of some very questionable calls. The home run in the '95 Series against the Braves, when that kid reached over the wall to take away a probable out. And a definite strike which was called a ball against the Padres which then led to a grand slam home run.
Not all sports lend themselves to technological solutions to refereeing a game, but wherever it can be implemented without impacting the flow of the game too much, it should be tried. Again, IMHO.

143 From the Sydney Morning Herald...

The point penalty was triggered when Williams destroyed her racquet on the court after having her serve broken. Apart from the bad look for the sport of a player violently breaking a racquet on court, it is also dangerous to on-court officials, ball persons and front-row spectators as shards go flying.

All players know that destroying a racquet on the court is a mandatory code violation.

The game penalty was triggered after Williams, in a lengthy tirade, loudly accused the umpire of being a "thief" stealing points from her. Ramos let the tirade slide, showing great composure until Williams accused him of cheating.

All athletes and pro athletes lookk for an edge and use PEDs. The drug testing is a known joke. Tennis players lose muscle mass playing tennis because it's aerobic so you burn muscle fast like a cyclist. So when a man or a woman is bulky like taut playing a sport that burns muscle, it's a red flag.

So me a bulky male tennis player.Find be a bulky Marathon runner. No can't and tennis is an endurance sport. The edge in women's would to use PED's to build unnatural muscle for power and to recover quickly keeping that muscle.

I joust proved it. Balls in your court and I won't shut up because you yell at me to because reasons when you have obviously have no clue about how athletes bodies break down and build up fat and muscle in various sports.

(1) There are videos out there of Serena playing when she was 6 years old and onward. She has ALWAYS been built like a truck.
(2) The accusation comes entirely from outside the tennis world. If she were using you can bet there were be plenty of inside whispers and grumblings from competitors.

161 139 Athletes are competitive. Sometimes, that competitive nature unfortunately overwhelms sportsmanship. Professional sports needs to get rid of umpires and referees whenever possible, IMHO. Technology has made it possible to rid SOME sports of arbitrary judgment calls that ruin games/matches through missed calls.

Posted by: Concerned People's Front at September 09, 2018 12:58 PM (v1udk)

I strongly disagree. It's a technological solution to a personnel problem. Losing on a bad call mirrors life, where people sometimes lose through no fault of their own.

The whole idea of sports is not the score, or anything else. It's to mirror life, IMO. The struggle to achieve, the work required to achieve, etc. and the character to accept victory or defeat with equal grace, even if the outcome was arguably unjust.

Because that's life.

The women's pro circuit is the most SJW organization in sports. They demanded and got the same prize money as the men in the grand slams even though they play less and draw less fans. Remember they also allowed Renee Richards on their circuit decades ago.

And this year , Billie Jean King and Martina Navratilova called for the Australian Open tennis stadium named after Margaret Court ( all time leader in Grand Slam titles 24) to have her named remove for daring to express her Christian opposition to gay marriage.

He later confessed that he was not naturally so cool.
When he was playing a tournament as a kid, he banged his racket and cursed after missing a point. His parents responded by taking his racket away for six weeks.
A couple of years later, he had another court tantrum and they took it away for 6 months.
That was it.

And of course his self-control in the long run was a great weapon.

But how many parents, even reasonably strict ones, would do what his did?!? It would derail little Johnny's career!

Sorry, I don't quite understand your question, but I'll take a shot at answering it.

Rotten things happen to people in life for no obvious reason. Lou Gehrig, Stephen Hawking, etc. are two examples.

Compared to their travails, having a bad call at a sporting event doesn't even budge the needle, IMO. If you can't accept the latter with grace, how could you accept a REAL hardship?

Accepting bad breaks with grace exalts the human condition. Whining about it degrades the human condition, IMO.

Body type doesn't matter. Tennis is an aerobic sport. It is impossible to bulk up and maintain muscle mass in an aerobic sport. Find me somebody else in an aerobic sport like cycling, tennis, long distance running with muscle bulk... It has nothing to do with genetic genius. It's how biology and biochemistry works.

Please I'll be waiting for your solution that doesn't involve PEDs to help bulk and keep large amounts muscle mass in an aerobic sport.... It has nothing to do with genetics unless she has the mutation of XXY or XYY which gives a woman male traits and male biochemistry.

So yes everybody knows who has played a sport(s) at even a middle school level.

I hate to be this frank, but there's always maximum doting and virtue-signalling when it comes to black athletes. They are so bent on making them role models that they overlook all their personal flaws.
And I'm tired of hearing about motherhood when it comes to black female celebrities--they did this with Beyonce a few years back too.
So a couple of black women had babies. Big fucking deal.

As for the treatment of Naomi Osaka by boo birds and Williams herself a
cult of personality does horrible things to some people. Serena needs to
make it up to Naomi publicly. A rematch would make them a bunch of
money that always makes a person feel better..

It was a stark contrast to simplicity of Osaka in pearls, that's for sure. She was always a funky dresser, but people should be wary of becoming a caricature of themselves. I get the feeling those around her (including Nike) only feed the ego. Drag queens and 8 year olds play tennis in a tutu, not a champion over 35.

Roid gut, or more correctly HGH gut. If you do any web search about condition you will notice that there is a significant thickening of the waist and the muscle sheet across the front of the belly gets thicker and thicker, though remaining somewhat, muscular and cut.

When you look at Arnold and the lifters of that age and compare it to modern lifers (both who used "roids") you can see that all the modern lifter exhibit this pregnant look even at low body fat percentages. I read an article once that basically quoted Arnold saying "Yeeesh guys dial back the roids, you look like crap, but I guess that's the modern aesthetic"

When you look at Serena with her midrif showing, it is a classic case of roid gut.

They used "race" in the sense of "nationality," more of a cultural reference than a biological one.

The Germans, Dutch, and British are pretty closely related, not just linguistically but biologically. It's the French and Italians who are quite distinct, even in appearance.

Billie Jean King, on Twitter, is pretty much telling her to double down: When a woman is emotional, she's "hysterical" and she's penalized for it. When a man does the same, he's "outspoken" and there are no repercussions. Thank you, @serenawilliams, for calling out this double standard.

Posted by: m at September 09, 2018 02:30 PM (kGLPx)

458 Serena was disgraceful. The interesting thing is, after the initial outburst, Osaka looked rattled and Serena actually started winning points. Then she double faulted, threw her racket down and started yelling again at the ref. No sport allows you to scream at the ref and question his integrity by calling him a thief without any consequences. Simple truth, Osaka was a better player on this day and deserved to win, it's a shame it was ruined for her by the obnoxious ass kissers of the media who acted like Serena was a lock to win if it wasn't for a simple warning from the ref.
Speaking of the media, Chris Evert was also a disgrace, saying Serena didn't know they were going to take a point away for her outbursts. How long has she been playing? Also got a laugh of Evert saying it's "sake time" now that Osaka won. Really, because she's Japanese? Would it have been malt liquor time if Serena had won?

Because she has attacked USA Tennis for fining another female player who took off her shirt during a match, I"m assuming to put on a dry one? Or she just played in her bra, who knows, I don't follow tennis as I can't stand any sport where every time you hit the ball you bellow like a trapped cow. Apparently, the female player was fined and the male players who do the same thing weren't.
How about if you need to take your shirt off( why , I have no idea), then you step into the locker room, regardless of which of the 37 genders you are.

462 211 153 I remember how Bjorn Borg stood out in his day as a perfect gentleman on the court.

Then her coach admitted he had broken the rules. I guess it was caught on tape and it is not the first time he has done so.

So Serena flat out lied. It was OTT too.

Ever since she had the baby I think her hormones have been outta whack, and that's not her fault. Also, she is not used to losing. The combo brought on this mess, IMO. The lying though...that is all on her.

I will say she did tell the audience to stop booing and to celebrate the winner...and she was gracious. So that was something. Otherwise the audience would have probably continued, which is despicable.

lulz

I don't know!!

I took time off during the whole McCain week...total news blackout. Then I'm not sure what happened. Seems I'm kinda still on a news fast except for the headlines. I think I made some posts last week though...so I'm probably poised for re-entry.

477 Well I just avoided McCain threads over that week, which was impossible, and pretty much just bit my tongue clean off* on all the dedicated topic threads that turned into McCain threads. Like when people dropped into post 350 of a completely unrelated topic to share:

HEY DID THEY BURY THAT ASSHOLE YET I'M SICK OF HEARING ABOUT HIM HE'S ON EVERY CHANNEL

But I digress. Anyway, hope all is well. I was wondering if you'd gotten lost or something.

* it's fine, it grows back. no I don't know how.

478 Anyone who looked at the US Open's official website will see the top banner rotating through photos of all the winners - except for the winner of the women's single finals. You have to scroll down the page to see any mention of Naomi Osaka.

479 Naomi, I don't pay attention to tennis, and don't know you from Eve.... But I salute you, Dear Lady. I would like to congratulate you.

480 I have been playing tennis for more than half a century and spectating just as long--glad for Ms Osaka, ashamed (once again) of S. Williams for continued boorish behavior. Her act has been wearing thin for a very long time. . . hope now that some of the gutless sports "broadcasters" begin to call her on this stuff. . . .but I doubt it.

481 And, speaking of sports, just spent another glorious NFL-free day. Also, Nike-free--wore my UnderArmor duds on the tennis court today. No NFL. No Nike.

482 Serena is getting old in a sport that requires youth.Old Tennis players like old Strippers require blame for their condition, getting to old to play.I see this repeated until she finally is removed from playing by not winning and blaming everyone inside 200 miles for the loss. This is just the start folks, sit back and wait for the next explosion.Sad really Serena was a powerful Tennis player......once.

483 "She has, in fact, made a habit of boorishness, up to threatening to
shove a ball down an official's "effing throat" in the past. She
classless, graceless, and entitled."

Quoted for truth.
