Economy Grew 4.2% in 2nd Quarter

This is a small revision to the previously reported 4.1% growth. Every little bit helps.

he U.S. economy grew at a strong 4.2 percent annual rate in the April-June quarter, the best showing in nearly four years, as growth stayed on track to produce its strongest full-year gain in more than a decade.

...

Economists expect growth to slow to a still solid 3 percent annual rate the rest of the year, resulting in full-year growth of 3 percent for 2018. It would be the best performance since 2005, two years before the Great Recession began.

The 4.2 percent annual growth that the government estimated for last quarter is the strongest such figure since a 4.3 percent annual gain in the third quarter of 2014. The expectation of 3 percent growth for 2018 as a whole would be up from gains of 1.6 percent in 2016 and 2.2 percent last year.

I still think one of the reasons Faceborg's stock tanked so badly and why Elon Musk is in serious trouble is because Trump's administration isn't funneling money into their ventures.

In short, back in the 90's he predicted that the US auto sector would be unassailable world champions because of the beneficial effect of labor unions in the auto sector, and and production of components nearby in the US.

I think implicitly those advocating it assume that they'll be the beneficiaries of largesse, not the providers of it.

A young black friend of mine (who's actually well off) talked about how we should "help the poor." I pointed out that Africans were much much poorer than African Americans, so we should tax the latter to provide "help" to the former.

A long silence ensued.

"You see, you presumed African Americans would be the beneficiaries of the help, not the providers of it. Places things in a rather different light, doesn't it?"

Obama - sit down for this - is not very smart. His economic illiteracy - very common in the political class and nearly uniform among his ilk - was obviously just the tip of the iceberg. Uninteresting, uninformed, incurious, and unworldly. As I have said for years.

Not quite. He didn't directly attack fracking, but he and the rest of his commie cocksucker minions carried out a lot of indirect action to try to kill fracking. For example, killing the Keystone XL and Dakota Access pipelines was an overt attempt to make N Dakota fracking prohibitively expensive.

Plenty of other examples, but that's probably the most obvious.

That the "leader of the free world" did not know in which country Auschwitz had been located, or what language is spoken in Austria?

Srsly, it was obvious even at this remove that Obama was not very bright. I don't believe the poverty of his expression was not a conscious detuning to match his audience, and that, coupled with his failure ever to engage in abstract thought, was definitely a tip off.

I think we can all agree that he is unwise, unlearned by traditional standards, and ignorant of the ordinary workaday world.
And I'd say he is a textbook example of stupidity in the Orwellian sense, in that his mind is in an ideological stupor.

But I don't think he is "dumb" in the sense of having a low IQ.

This is the great mystery that Orwell (and others) have puzzled over for decades --- how mentally competent people and even brilliant people can believe and espouse demonstrable nonsense.

276 Margarita it's a conceptual and semantic conundrum, but I don't think any conventional - and meaningful - definition of "smart" applies to Obama and people like him.

Notably smart, yet warped, even evil people demonstrate their smarts in some practical way, somehow, at some point. We see this with the biggest villains of the 20th century.

Obama is an absolute zero. The usual dodge of "political talent!!", which is typically nonsense (as with Bill Clinton) can't even be applied to this case with a straight face.

His elevation has nothing to do with him, everything to do with the degradation of American public discourse, the utter collapse of the press, and the overall degradation of the civic culture.

Enough of the public is so, so infantilized that significant numbers of voters who were not attracted to his vague, dishonest, but obviously very dubious non-agenda ("hope and change", WTF, was this a high school class president's race?) were *still* so clueless they thought "ooh, electing a black guy will help race relations!!! and stuff!!".

303 Not declaring Brennan has no criminal liability exposure.

Saying I have not seen even any speculation on how, specifically, that might be so. Launching and pushing a bogus "intelligence" crusade is not illegal, even if there is proof you did so knowingly. And only the thinnest veneer of "this really was our best estimate at the time, based on what we had" is sufficient to keep it in the policy disaster - not criminal act - category. (and understandably so - otherwise there would be prosecution for the high % of intel estimates that are unavoidably wrong, and always will be wrong)

DOJ/FBI perps have lots of exposure, on identified grounds.

Just sayin' I have to see anyone with expertise ID specific criminal violations that might be in play, for Brennan. I suppose "conspiracy" to mount the various illegal actions of the DOJ and FBI might do the trick. Just wondering.

314 Every single one of the examples you give before that statement are evidence of ignorance, not low IQ.

You're right, up to a point.

Ignorance and low IQ are not co-extensive, but they are correlated, just not with 100% correlation. People with low IQ tend to be ignorant, and conversely.

I never saw any evidence of Obama engaging in abstract thought, and that definitely reflects low IQ, IMO.

Posted by: I smell something rotten... at September 03, 2018 02:12 PM (vpMHd)

319 Right. If Choom got straight A's we'd have heard about it every day of the week for 8 years. We'd have had comparisons between Trump's college transcripts and Obama's. We'd have been told its proof of his transcendent genius that caused women to swoon during speeches.

The fact that we are not told this, is proof they were meh grades given out of kindness to a guy who barely ever showed up to class.

I think Obama is smart enough, not particularly bright but maybe 110 IQ (to the extent IQ is valuable in identifying intelligence). But he's a fool, and that matters more.

Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at September 03, 2018 02:13 PM (39g3+)

320 And please note that he attended a fancy prep school, Occidental College (hardly top-drawer, but not skid row either,) Columbia University, and Harvard Law.
Affirmative action notwithstanding, one might expect these institutions to churn out a better product.
But they do not.
Posted by: Margarita DeVille at September 03, 2018 02:03 PM (0jtPF)

Occidental is notorious for being Red-infested, as is Columbia (as evidenced by welcoming the Frankfurt School).

I don't think Obama made his way through those two as an affirmative action candidate, but rather as a Red diaper baby moving up through the Red farm system. By his own admission his performance at Occidental was dire, and yet he was admitted to Columbia? Hmmmm.

Treason, being hard to prosecute out of wartime, is probably too much to hope for, so we would presumably have to settle for malfeasance in office. After all, pushing the levers of his official CIA authority and conspiring with foreign agents (the English are still foreign) to overturn a Presidential election is (at minimum) malfeasance. Don't have a clue what the relevant code would be.

Just like he was supposed to be this great basketball player. The only clips I ever saw of that was a shoot around where he missed about 20 shots in a row. Ordinarily I'd cut him slack because he was in street shoes, even though his shooting form smelled like ass, but then when one finally went in he put his hands up like he just passed potty training instead of being embarrassed he bricked so many before that. There's no way he's any fucking good at hoops.

My guess? Somewhere between 100 and 115, the latter being the average IQ of a college graduate. I see him as on the low edge of intellectual ability among the college students of my experience.

Historian Michael Beschloss stated that Barack Obama was the smartest man with the highest IQ ever to be elected president on the Don Imus show in November 2008. Imus asked "So, what is his IQ?" Beschloss didn't know, he said he was just assuming. This was a constant theme in the 2008 election and for the first couple of years of the Obama presidency. He was "the smartest guy in the room." They stopped that BS after it became obvious that the only time BO was the smartest person in the room was when he was in the bathroom by himself.

As to the first, not since WF Buckley.

They did regard Kissinger and Nixon as intelligent. It would be a stretch to call them conservative, of course, but they were Republicans and Nixon had an anti-communist background.

Now go back to what you said about a (loose) correlation between ignorance and low IQ.
And let's look at "ignorance."

By my standards, by your standards (which may differ somewhat from my own,) by the standards of Columbia University 100 years ago, the man is ignorant.

But by the standards of contemporary elite institutions, is he? Is he not well versed in left-wing ideology? Do not the memes of neo-Marxism slip automatically from his lips just as easily as a Latin proverb might come from the mouth of an educated man 100 years ago?

I dunno. Like Orwell, I find the puzzle of the smart leftist ....interesting.
