Good News: Hillary Clinton Will Bring Her Famous "Hillary Clinton Campaign Magic" to Democrat Congressional Hopefuls

She'll be mostly campaigning in her natural milleu: Raising money from well-heeled power-brokers and bundlers in private settings.

Per NBC:

The 2016 Democratic presidential nominee will headline three events -- in San Francisco, Chicago and New York -- for the DNC this fall to boost the party's chances of seizing control of the U.S. House and Senate.

Billed as "intimate dinners with discussion," the first invitations were set to go out Monday night for a September event in San Francisco.

I'm having a hard time finding stories. The only thing in the news is the stuff making the NeverTrumpers have their first erections since they first saw a strapping young cabana boy mount their wives.

You know, this sort of thing that Razor is parodying with this snark:

Don't be so naive?

Incredible rich asshole leftists in those states donate money in massive quantities to the DNC, and that money is then poured into loal races in other poor states, to brainwash the rubes to vote in more socialist overlords.

It's just economic carpetbagging. I can't believe it's even legal but apparently it is. MOST campaign money in the elections in the other 47 states comes from California, New York and Illinois. Local elections are not locally funded.

Coen I'm skeptical of. Its a bit too convenient and extremely difficult to prove that money for the campaign was used to pay off someone for a clearly worthless NDA. Not only is the financing going to be difficult to demonstrate but why would he reject the idea of a pardon? Sounds more like the guy doesn't really like Trump and is trying to ingratiate himself to the Deep State than someone telling the truth. I just don't buy that the president ordered him to take money from the campaign and pay off a gold diggin' whore.

The good news is that this election cycle may finally spell the end of hillary as a political force. The bad news is that it would be replaced by community organizers on crack, which may, in a silver lining, spell further doom for the dem party as people walk away from crazy.

156 Fifty years ago, we folks could've discreetly arranged to quietly meet, plan and prepare to deal with all the things that need doing.

Nowdays, every communication is monitored, your every trip in a car or truck is on video somewhere along the way, and the Corporate/Govt. power to index, collate and filter these billions of daily data-points grows more God-like, by the hour. Facial recognition isn't a coming thing. It's HERE.

Committes of Vigilance won't even get past the first meeting, before Uncle Fed has his infiltrators and monitors in on the action.

Solution? Kind of a Committee of the Individual.

Simply ... go Lone Wolf, deal with the problem as you see fit, and never, ever tell a soul about it.

It's harder to do than a lynch mob. But the anonymity of the mob is gone, unless you're Antifa. Then, you're shrouded by not only your mask, but a compliant media and a cooperative government.

Still. A single shot from 400/500 yards. The isolated bombing. A garotte on a dark winter's night. Supressed .22 pistol to the skull.

The methodologies matter less than the results.

And the escape. THAT matters, bigly.

Our Burning Times are gonna be slightly different than Burning Times Past.

So, get your thinking cap on for the new paradigms, and don't limit yourselves solely to the Olde Ways of things.

And damn sure, Bob at NSA will send this one up the chain, but I'm sure I've been on *that* list for years now, anyway.

195 Its not just pay by the word that explains their wordiness. That was the 19th century style, and until pretty recently you weren't writing a novel unless it was a bookstop: 800+ pages.

Back then, people had more time and frankly inclination to read, so a long book was welcome. Plus, availability of books was much more limited; today we're buried in an avalanche of books around us with libraries and used book stores and Amazon with a kabillion ebooks and so on. Back then, unless you were really rich, books were in short supply. So a long big book meant a book that stayed with you a long time and you could enjoy it for weeks.

And, people were more patient. They didn't mind 3 pages of description of a scene. They didn't mind long conversations over pretty much nothing. The principle of "cut out everything that doesn't serve the story" was not even considered, it was all part of the experience.

Because, Mr. Ace, formalities must be observed.

It is only right and proper that upstanding fellows be of good comportment with the times, you see. One must always be aware of tides, if you will, of what it means to be correct and proper.

Things like, where is the best fromage procurer, where should we brunch on Thursday next, which nanny has the best Alsatian accent...

If we do not uphold good manners in carrying the great burden of being better than the hoi palloi, then it might just fall apart like so much handmade parchment tossed into the Seine, you see.

He pled guilty to campaign finance violations, and claimed the president ordered him to do so. Now, those are two different concepts and pleading to something is not necessarily admitting guilt. I mean, how many TV shows are there now about people that are being found not guilty despite pleading guilty in order to avoid a tougher sentence?

But even if you buy that he violated campaign finance laws by using Trump campaign money to pay off an NDA that doesn't equate to Trump ordering him to do so, or any guilt or question of Trump's illegality, and that's what the left wants everyone to jump to assume.

314 Just read McCarthy's quick take on Cohen situation. Not persuasive. His key premise - really the whole issue is bound up in this - is that the NDA payments were in-kind campaign contributions. Doesn't seem to be the case. Former FEC chairman interviewed by Levin yesterday stated the standard for defining campaign contributions, such NDA payments clearly do not meet it (payments were common practice for many different purposes, clearly not solely intended for campaign purposes/effects).

Which leaves aside the other key fact, that it's a civil violation addressed by fines, not a crime. Unless you're Dinesh D'Souza, or now, Cohen-as-stand-in-for-real-target-Trump.

But I don't think we even get to the secondary question of how such violations are handled. Treating private payments to private parties using private funds for private NDAs regarding matters that have arisen several times in the past cannot seriously be argued to be campaign spending - or the definition becomes meaningless.

I was using GAB and MINDS for a while, but really don't see any value in any of that. Too many downsides (fear of doxxing, perhaps), too few upsides.

Thoughts?

326 One of the coolest books I ever came across back in my former life was a first edition of "The Three Musketeers", bound in a beautiful leather binding, itself inset with a miniature portrait of Dumas, and inserted into the pages were hundreds of contemporary prints & maps of the places depicted in the novel, as well as genuine signatures of the people (the characters were all based on real people) portrayed in the book.

ehhhh... kind of. He did find their names in an old history but he made up the story and I don't think the history said anything about the people other than that they were Musketeers of some fame.

The whole story, I think, is inspired by the real-life Affair of the Necklace, but that wasn't about Madame De Winter scheming to reveal the queen's infidelity, but about some embarrassing fraud maybe including royal money in purchasing a necklace.

That's my point. She is, at best, a "regular girl" -- not some super-attractive sex-bomb. To me, she's slightly below "regular" or "average" -- I'd rate Katy perry about a 4.5.

It wasn't me who bright her up only] for the purpose of bashing her looks. I was merely replying to the generally accepted wisdom that she's a Perfect 10. Nothing wrong with being a regular girl near-average-looking. Most people are. But then again, most people aren't over-praised. I don't go around bashing averageness -- I'm only noting the emperor has no clothes.

And I don't think the Iran disaster was treason, at all. Treason seems to be the only word/concept people have for what are about three dozen different kinds of bad policies or decisions. But it's got a very narrow definition, only crime defined in the constitution.

Bad policies - disastrous policies - are not treason. They're ...... disastrous policies. They should be punished with political oblivion, not prosecution.

The misdeeds I listed involved actual concrete violations of law, gross abuses of power, etc. Iran disaster was indulged by the feckless GOP, who could have blocked it any number of ways. Policies that help our enemies are not, thereby, automatically "treason", but I know the word has irresistible emotive power.

>>>I've started Bram Stoker's Dracula after the reading topic
came up last night regarding classic novels. I'm enjoying it very much.

I do find it amusing that as Harker makes his way through the
countryside to visit the good Count, the village people, when told his
destination, perform the sign of the cross and the gesture to protect
one's self from the evil eye. Harker notes this, but seems mostly not
bothered by this at all.

I guess Harker was progressive.

459 Romney really is a vile POS. Assuming he's not stupid, since he doesn't seem to be, actually, stupid.

One of the potentially most serious corruption/hostile intel penetration cases in our history - the Awan case - is ended with almost no action or results. An oily Beltway lobbyist is convicted for crimes of a decade ago (after same charges were deemed not worth pursuing a few years back) - by an office illegitimately established contrary to DOJ regs, whose purported mission has nothing to do with such cases. And a sleazy NYC lawyer pleads guilty to a non-crime in order to lighten his sentence for crimes that had nothing to do with Trump.

And THIS is the day that restores Romney's "faith" in our judicial system.

One nice scenario with Romney is that the GOP gains enough Senate seats that his vote is not always important, and Trump gets on vicious terms with him (publicly), forcing Romney to pull a Full McCain (vote contrary to his state's clear preferences and his own long-held beliefs and positions), or go along with the president who's savaging him regularly.

The Lady in the High Window was immediately solvable upon first mention of the circumstances of "death," and the one with the Mexican actress -- I have no idea what that resolution was. It was very convoluted, mostly for the sake of being convoluted.

I forget the mysteries in Farewell My Lovely and the much-praised The Long Goodbye, which suggests to me they aren't worth remembering.

Still, the actual process of detecting is good. Banter and snap-backs and roasts are great.

Wrong. Jewish criminal gangs were a thing at various times.

519 i'll keep Space Merchants in mind.

I read Bestler's Demolished Man, which is about a protagonist (not hero) who wishes to commit a murder in a society with ESPers always detecting the thoughts of potential criminals. He has to defeat a lot of strange barriers to murder, but the one he uses to beat the ESPers is just to pay a commercial writer for the most annoying earworm ever discovered, so that his brain would always have that horrible ad jingle in it instead of thoughts of murder.

"Oh. Pepsis, we call 'em."

"Why?"

"Dunno. They say because the first one was written centuries ago by a character named Pepsi. I don't buy that. I wrote one once..." Duffy winced in recollection. "Hate to think of it even now. Guaranteed to obsess you for a month. It haunted me for a year."

"You're rocketting."

"Scout's honor, Mr. Reich. It was 'Tenser, Said The Tensor.' I wrote it for that flop show about the crazy mathematician. They wanted nuisance value and they sure got it. People got so sore they had to withdraw it. Lost a fortune."

"Let's hear it."

"I couldn't do that to you."

"Come on, Duffy. I'm really curious."

"You'll regret it."

"I don't believe you."

"All right, pig," she said, and pulled the punch panel toward her. "This pays you back for that no-guts kiss."

Her fingers and palm slipped gracefully over the panel. A tune of utter monotony filled the room with agonizing, unforgettable banality. It was the quintessence of every melodic cliche Reich had ever heard. No matter what melody you tried to remember, it invariably led down the path of familiarity to "Tenser, Said The Tensor." Then Duffy began to sing:

Eight, sir; seven, sir;
Six, sir; five, sir;
Four, sir; three, sir;
Two, sir; one!
Tenser, said the Tensor.
Tenser, said the Tensor.
Tension, apprehension,
And dissension have begun.

"Oh my God!" Reich exclaimed.

"I have some real gone tricks in that tune," Duffy said, still playing. "Notice the beat after 'one'? That's a semicadence [sic]. Then you get another beat after 'begun.' That turns the end of the song into a semi-cadence [sic], too, so you can't ever end it. The beat keeps you running in circles, like: Tension, apprehension, and dissension have begun. RIFF. Tension, apprehension, and dissension have begun. RIFF. Tension, appre--"

"You little devil!" Reich started to his feet, pounding his palms on his ears. "I'm accursed. How long is this affliction going to last?"

"Not more than a month."

I think it's quite unfair to "blame" Dickens for this; Dickens used commonly known stereotypes of all kinds throughout his works, it was one of touches that made readers of his day so attracted to him. (even though many of those grate on us today) The nefarious "wicked Jew" character was something every reader of the day would have instantly recognized; Dickens used it, but he didn't create it. It is a reflection of the culture of the day, not of his personal views. Shakespeare has long been accused of doing much the same thing in "The Merchant of Venice", and has much the same defense.

Also, in Dicken's defense, Fagin is far from the worst character. Fagin actually does try to get the boys food and appears to care for them a little bit, as opposed to the purely English and viciously Murderous Bill.

534 I mentioned these late in the book and music yesterday but I'll mention them again.

Two pulp books I enjoyed were written by (dude) Kim Newman. Both are set in late Victorian England one thing I liked about them is that they are filled with Easter eggs for the fine eye for detail with knowledge of the Victorian era. The first is a dark comedy about Sherlock Holmes' nemesis. Professor Moriarty: The Hound of the D'Urbervilles satirizes several Holmes stories as narrated by his henchman, Colonel Sebastian "Basher" Moran, gambler, tiger hunter, lover of women, assassin, thief, and bon vivant.

I liked it so well I bought Anno Dracula (the original, unsubtitled book) expecting more dark humor but this is more a full fledged horror novel combining numerous elements imagining if Jonathon Harker, Professor van Helsing had been less successful in their battle with Dracula with a touch of Jack the Ripper thrown in. In fact, if I were to squint just right, I might see certain similarities with our current political situation.

I have downloaded both of them in the last twenty minutes.

Free books on Kindle is exposing me to all sorts of people I've heard about but never read. The kind of book I could make a cocktail party comment on, but I don't go to cocktail parties.

The one I'm reading now I absolutely do not recommend so please don't anybody take this as a direction for the pulp fiction club. It's "Riders of the Purple Sage" by Zane Grey.

It is unfathomably bad, overwrought, cliched, purple, and not so good. It has now sucked me in like a soap opera. I think I was lost when our guy got a first glimpse of an actual girl's breast.

Tho I really like Chandler, none of his plots (or the actual mystery
elements, I should specify) after The Big Sleep are worth a damn.

The Lady in the High Window was immediately solvable upon first
mention of the circumstances of "death," and the one with the Mexican
actress -- I have no idea what that resolution was. It was very
convoluted, mostly for the sake of being convoluted.

I forget the mysteries in Farewell My Lovely and the much-praised
The Long Goodbye, which suggests to me they aren't worth remembering.

Still, the actual process of detecting is good. Banter and snap-backs and roasts are great.

Posted by: ace at August 22, 2018

Ace, I think you mean The Lady in the Lake. The High Window was another novel of his entirely. Yes, Chandler was not a plotter like the Ellery Queen cousins, who really did the baffling business like nobody else, or like John Dickson Carr and his impossible crimes. But he wasn't writing that kind of mystery.

Language? He had it. From the opening of the short story "Red Wind":

"There was a wind blowing that night. It was one of those hot dry Santa Anas that come down out of the mountain passes and make your hair curl and your skin itch. On nights like that every booze party ends in a fight. Meek little wives feel the edge of the carving knife and study their husbands' necks. Anything can happen. You can even get a full glass of beer at a cocktail lounge."

And in paragraph 2, Marlowe is doing just that, and witnesses a killing, and it winds on from there. Good stuff.
