David Horowitz Diagnoses Jonah Goldberg and the NeverTrumpers' Cowardly Positioning

Goldberg attacked Horowitz nastily on Twitter; if you care about that, see the link.

In this new column, Horowitz discusses the NeverTrumpers' focus-grouped ploy of claiming they support Trump's conservative policy actions while still hating him -- some, like Bret Stephens, even admitting they "still wish Hillary Clinton were president" -- due to Trump's character defects.

Funny, they never seem to have much to say about Hillary Clinton's character.

Also funny: they seem much more emotionally traumatized by President Trump than they ever were by President Obama. One senses, rather acutely, that they rather liked Obama, but were required for careerist reasons to pretend they didn't.

But anyway, as to this supposedly-I-support-his-policies-but-I-hate-his-character posture: it is strange indeed that they spend so little time or effort or emotion talking up these conservative policies they allegedly support. I guess you'll just have to take their perfunctory word about that.

Horowitz criticizes this stance as cowardly and calculating, for maximum career protection and even career advancement:

The posture of these NeverTrumpers is transparently self-serving. It preserves their intellectual credentials as "conservatives," and simultaneously takes them out of the line of fire from an increasingly vicious Left whose goal is to destroy Trump and his presidency, and--incidentally--conservative America. Sitting on the fence affords them new career opportunities -- appearances on CNN and MSNBC and columns in the New York Times.

All that's required is that they avoid taking sides in the political war that is engulfing the country.

All this reminds me of a memorable Trotsky sneer about liberals, whom he accused of being reluctant to step into the stream of political conflict because they were afraid to get their moral principles wet.

He also says:

The nastiness of [Goldberg's personal attack on me] sentence shocked me. Evidently the hatred of Trump is so fevered it can burn through two decades of cordiality and acquaintance. I wonder if Jonah would be so hostile to someone who shared his view of Trump's character but thought Trump's policies were racist, and tyrannical.

No, he wouldn't be. He was never this purple-facedly enraged at Obama and was one of the guys you could count on to chide you if your criticism of Obama offended the sense of propriety of his liberal friends.

41 Rush, for years, has been calling people out on symbolism without substance.

That's what the NeverTrumpers are. They reduced conservatism to symbols they could feel good about, little baubles that flatter the wearer and nothing more. It was cheap, easy play-acting that made them feel heroic.

Now the voters have finally, despite the Establishment's efforts, got their hands on something with substance. It's not pretty, but it gets the job done. We're ecstatic. They're appalled, because they put symbolism over substance.

That is *totally* it. Trump and some theorists around Trump made me realize that it's never been a game about "right", but "right" is a type of status--and the social sphere is *all* about status.

As an intellectual it initially dismayed me. But if you're going to win the game, you have to win the game people are *actually* playing. Not the game you think they should be playing.

As an intellectual concept: pragmatism is a virtue.

no. the only thing we consider in past presidencies is their policies. and i fully support what trump is doing, even if i have reservations about tariffs or other specific points, his success and overall conservative achievements lead me to give him the benefit of the doubt.

policies not personalities.

Obviously.

And Goldberg's/others' "character" stuff is idiotic as well. Political character: Trump has the best political character in generations, possibly in modern history (he does what he says he'll do - that's 95% of political character). Personal character: Trump has equal/superior personal character to 90% of the "elites", incl. the very dumbed down/corrupt/failed Beltway elite.

It's by far the best not to have any need or much interest in the opinings of such as Goldberg - because you actually understand important issues yourself and have figured them out - but if you somehow aren't in that position ..... best to completely disregard all these people who've beclowned themselves the last 18 months.

So that's his dividing line with his "friends" in the conservopress: Those who have found dead bodies on their property, and those have not.

You don't read Stephens writing about conservative judges, increased US Military strength (increased funding), the demise of Obamacare and would have been except Muh Principles McCain.

Stephens and his ilk are stuck - on the fence like cowards that Horowitz says they are. If they truly are conservatives, they should be writing about Trump's conservative victories - but they can't and still keep their cocktail invitations. So they say, yes, Trump has had some victories (But Gorsuch !!) while writing about Hillary being president. They aren't cowards. They're chickenshits. And as others have said, I don't see where they wrote a whole lot about Hillary's character, except when it was fashionable. Now that it's not fashionable, they don't.

Horowitz is over the target. These guys know they won't be leading any large conservative charge. As stated, the victories Trump is striving for and has somewhat achieved, were promised long ago for just a few more election dollars. Any other president of R listing would have folded. Trump doesn't fold. And that's what pisses these guys off. They could have still maintained their R "principles" while telling Jeb to ditch Sessions all the while keeping their cocktail invitations.

148 To expand on my previous post. Conservatives were *losing* because they were playing a game of "right principles" and "correct and measured reasoning" --and they were solid in their own right.

But it's *not* the game the left is playing when they are distorting and redefining our Constitution in front of the voting public.

Not only that, but as borders become more porous and as the other side cares less how much it plays by the rules--without a universal understanding of "the game we should be playing", you're going to end up playing the game that humans play anyway.

De Gaulle was an arrogant asshole of questionable morals. He was also the most notable resistance to National Socialism in France.

Pétain was the figurehead serving the national socialists in France.

I don't see any way in which a freedom loving Frenchman could argue for his support of Petain because of the icky-ness of de Gaulle.

This is the same deal. We are in a war we are broadly losing and we've just gotten our first leader willing to fight. Give him feedback, argue for how he could do things better - but going Vichy as Goldberg and co have done is surrendering to National Socialism - in this case literally not just figuratively.

215 That's the thing, I don't know that Trump could have won against someone of better character. Had the Dems been running a socialist who was polite, articulate and not a criminal (a unicorn in and of itself, I know, but for the sake of argument...) that person might well have won. The contrast would likely have turned a lot of voters off of Trump's boorish manner.

But they ran Hillary Clinton. Who is of far, far worse character than Donald Trump. Her attacks on women whom her husband assaulted, her decades of looking down on regular Americans (compounded by her actual words during the campaign), her shameless exploitation of identity politics that I'm not sure even Leftists believed she herself believed in, not to mention her actual criminal behavior were and are recognized by "deplorable" Americans as being far worse than any personal failing or obnoxious language of Donald Trump's.

He really was the perfect candidate to go up against her.

My reasons for not voting for him the first time around were, I admit his character, but the more important factor was that I didn't believe he would govern conservatively. I believed, as an NYC Democrat, he was saying what he thought conservatives wanted to hear, and that when in office he would govern like a Democrat.

I was wrong. And although I still have a lot of issues with his behavior, I will be voting for him in 2020.

246 It's also become clear that Trump's behavior serves as a great distraction for the DC/MSM machine.
They have chewed up and spit out so many other Republicans who were polite and chose to not 'go there' in the same manner the Left does.

Every time he tweets, or he makes an off the cuff remark that riles them up, he is providing cover for the people in his admin who are getting stuff done.
He has perfected disrupting their OODA loop.

There is an idea derided as the Cult of the Presidency, where the president is basically the Father of the Nation and quasi-secular High Pontiff.

That idea is inconsistent with the idea of a state of free men voting for *political*, not spiritual, representatives.

301 I'll Bite. Jonah's question is worthy of a good answer. Let's start with the seven lively virtues (which oppose the seven deadly sins:

-- Trump is industrious
-- Trump practices Temperance in food and drink. He has no history of drug, tobacco, or alcohol use
-- Trump has show generosity and Charity
-- Trump is capable of great Kindness
-- Trump is Patient.

I would also argue that Trump is not particularly Lustful at present. There are no stories of women being with Trump now.

Trump also practices a certain form of Humility (yes, really) in that he seems to understand that he owes those who elected him to office his best efforts at keeping his promises. He hasn't "evolved" his thinking, at least not yet. There is also a certain amount of humility necessary for making deals -- you need to know what you are capable of, and what is possible in a given situation.

An interesting theory, but two problems:

1) The Clintons practically declared Lucianne Goldberg an enemy of the state, and Jonah still breaks bread with them.
2) Even if he seeks to avenge his mother, the strength of his vitriol is no more or less than that of other True American Conservatives like Bret Stephens, David Frum, Bill Kristol, Jen Rubin, Ben Shapiro, Mona Charen...

It's a long list.

They mostly avoid all such comparatives. If you attempt to corner them, they'll say "It's not binary" (so there's no need for a binary comparison) or they'll say "Well she's not the president, that's why I don't spend time talking about her."

David French pulled that bullshit when someone asked him why he didn't talk about Hillary's actual collusion with Russian officials for campaign dirt. He said something like "Well if there's something there, then we'll see it, and we can impeach her back to her home where she already is."

A snarky dismissal, claiming that somehow Hillary's real collusion is NOT criminal (he can only think in terms of a political remedy like impeachment for HER), while claiming Trump's """collusion""" is itself criminal.

Based on David French's nonsensical contradictions and see-through post-hoc justifications, I have to imagine he's a shit lawyer.

well phil anschutz owns the Weekly Substandard. I don't know how Singer fits in there. I think he funds, or did fund, the Washington Free Beacon, and many suspect him of having backrolled the WFB's hiring of Fusion to dig dirt on Trump and Cruz, though no one's proven that or admitted that.

I do get the sense he funds a lot of NeverTrump, Inc. But there's no actual confirmation of that. Just a lot of suspicion.

Can you help?

We know that Adam Waldman, the lawyer/lobbyist who Mark Warner was communicating with in a secret back channel was representing Christopher Steele. It seems very apparent that the other Waldman client who was referenced during that communications was Oleg Deripaska.

Further, it is looking more and more that Deripaska wasn't just another client but he was in fact Steele's employer and a likely source of Russian dirt.

The FBI approached Deripaska and asked him to help build a case against Trump. He laughed at them and told them they were trying to create something that didn't exist.

Still, they had something he desperately wanted, sanctions relief that was killing him personally. I believe he is the "friend" Steele referenced in his communications with Ohr when he said it would be terrible if our "friend" was forced to go back home.

Those tapes might well prove Russian collusion, just not with Trump.

Spite, man. Spite is immensely underrated as a political force.

I'm fully in the camp that if the Left had stopped their toddler fit a week or so after inauguration, Trump would be a middling President in the Carter mode.

Nope.

Did none of them read the part of Trump's book where he discussed revenge and said you don't start anything but when someone starts with you, you take them down twice as hard, pour encourager les autres?

Because, dude, Trump point blank said hey don't want none, don't start none.

Also I am to the point of thinking very very very unkind things indeed about David French. I will say this. I've known a very large number of people who were intent on telling me how righteous and pious they were. It is my lived experience that the more you tell me that, there more there is something very nasty that you are hiding.

Do I have proof of that with French? Nope. Am I making a very nasty insinuation with no supporting evidence? Yup.

Trump is like Grant, in that he doesn't retreat from his enemies, he doesn't surrender, he doesn't make wonderful promises about doing something while he's selling all of his supporters out behind our backs - Trump's tactics are simple. He Fights.

friends and I have noticed a major shift in the past month with an increasing tempo the past week -- of the weaker-NeverTrumpers getting so pissed at the media for its bias, and of people generally supportive of Trump losing all patience for the NeverTrumpers and deciding that it's time, as they said on the Real World, to stop being polite, and start getting real.

I mean, most people gave them time -- a lot of time -- to work through the five stages of grief and exhaust themselves from their two year temper tantrum.

I think for a lot of people, all patience has run out and it's now just time to treat them as what they are, political enemies.

I don't mean this about me; I've been edgy about this for a long time. But I'm seeing it intensify. If someone claims to be Jesus-like in his moral flawlessness, then he can never correct a moral flaw, for his entire ego is set up to deny the existence of any moral flaws within him.

Those claiming to be morally perfect have created for themselves the sociopathic mindset that permits them to be moral thugs.

And when that happens the real battle lines get drawn. You either choose the corrupt, over powerful deep state or whatever you want to call it as not just our betters but our masters or you choose us for lack of a better term.

We are either going to take back the government and run this thing the way it was meant to be run or we are going to give it over to a corrupt political class. But if you choose us you take Trump as part of the package.

JackStraw - oh very much yes. Question is timing/structure. If, in fact, there finally is an unambiguous Turning Point at which the unbelievable criminality and constitutional vandalism of 2016/17 are unveiled (indictments, pleas, etc.), reaction to that will tell our fate. Despite my pessimism I actually think a solid majority of the electorate will find it unacceptable/appalling, though manifestations of this will vary in form and intensity. 454 I've revered Lee since childhood, as was the way of my people, but other
than Chancellorsville, what great tactical victory did he win?

Fredericksburg.

Johnston was a
better defensive general, having grasped early that the spade was more
powerful the rifle.

Johnston did indeed have that mindset, and it got him fired because he was too cautious. Lee knew that was not an option for the South over the long term, so took lots of offensive chances. However, he too was an evangelist for the spade when he was on the defense. His men mocked him early in the war as the "King of Spades". They learned that he was right.

460 Lee was good at speed, decision and alacrity. Then there's his personal charisma.

Tactically he had typical problems of trying to get his plans executed as he designed them. Not all of his subordinates were firing on all cylinders all the time.

On the defensive, he was damn good. But when he went over to the offense, things went awry more often that not.

Johnston was a very good tactician but he was lacking in decision. He wouldn't take risks. On the other hand, he also didn't wreck his army the way Hood did.

This is unfair; he never profited a single bit from any of the stuff that went on when he was in office. But he was not a good judge of mens characters, and he could not believe that men who he thought of as friends would lie to his face and cheat the country, just for money. There's plenty of good evidence that by modern standards, Grant had severe aspergers, was possibly borderline autistic. He was capable of incredible periods of intense focus, but also often said he preferred the company of animals (horses, mules, and dogs) to the company of men. It's rather common for people on the autism spectrum to relate to animals more than they relate to humans.

An Article V convention is a pipe dream at this time.

First, the GOP only controls the legislatures' of 31 states and only controls 25 states fully.

So right there you don't have enough states to call for a convention and to control it and it's out come.

Second, forget about the Democrats, the GOPe would work tirelessly to sabotage any convention.

And this doesn't even get into what the left would do if by some miracle we get enough numbers to even call for a convention.

The left would send it's army of thugs out across the country to harass and intimidate every state convention and every convetion official.

We are simply not voting or Article V'ing our way out of our predicament.

We have let it get too far gone and it will have to blow up and hopefully we are in a position of power in the aftermath to rebuild from the ashes.

Longstreet tried to talk him into bypassing the Federal positions at Gettysburg and racing to Washington D.C., which had been stripped of all of its troops. If Lee had listened to Longstreet, he could have occupied Washington D.C. within a week and probably have forced an end to the war right there.

Also, Lee took a lot of credit early on for the tactical brilliance that actually came from Stonewall Jackson.

496 486 So if you surround yourself with corrupt people and refuse nip it and them in the bud and just show apathy towards it, doesn't that make you corrupt as shit as well since you are their boss. Fuck profit."

Or it just makes one clueless, a person who was elevated to a level far above his ability to cope with it. As the wizard of Oz said, he wasn't a bad man, he was a very good man, he was just a very bad Wizard.

Grant could function well inside the very rigid hierarchy of a wartime military, with very clearly defined goals. He was lost outside of that (remember he had been a failure at everything he tried before the war) and he was only elevated to the Presidency because the men who were already planning on how to enrich themselves (more or less the Radical Republican Congressional leadership) saw him as a very useful patsy that the public would love, and who would be unable to even understand all the games they were intending to play.

No one defends Grant's presidency, but to be fair one must consider how unbelievably corrupt the entire political power structure was at the time. (huh, a lot like now) One of the only people who truly comes off as moral was William Tecumseh Sherman, who was openly disgusted by everything political and til the end of his life flatly refused to have anything to do with it.

There's just so much packed into it and it seems spot on. Really, really good and with a semblance of a roadmap. My only disagreement would be that getting the right people in office would be sufficient, and on that I'm with Mark Levin. The Republic is structurally damaged with a practicing Constitution that has been grossly rewritten to a behemoth of muck. Without using the States to override that which has been abused by decades of Congressional sloth and Judicial tyranny, just more, better Rs in the Legislature will still fail.

But on all things Trump, VDH gets it like very few of the chattering people do.
