Late Summer Saturday Open Thread August 25 [KT]

It's been a while since I have heard about Heather MacDonald getting shouted down on a college campus. But that doesn't mean she's gone away. David Thompson picked up on a couple of pieces by MacDonald recently. This is a quote from the first:

What do you do if you are the New York Times and 20 people show up to the white-supremacist rally that you had been breathlessly billing as further proof of the normalization of hatred in the Donald Trump era? Expand the definition of "white supremacist" to cover a large portion of the American electorate and its representatives.

The New York Times is not alone.

Our own J.J. Sefton linked the second piece by MacDonald in one of his wonderful Morning Reports this week (we're gonna miss him next week), but I thought it deserved a little special attention:

For academic feminists, male and female biology is either interchangeable or immutable, depending on what complaint they need to lodge.

I wonder if all true feminists have switched over to the "front hole" terminology already? Health Line has added it to their safe sex guide. But they are not re-naming the vagina. ""Front hole," as another term for vagina, is also used by the National Institutes of Health, Human Rights Campaign, BMC Pregnancy and Childbirth journal, and Fenway Health in collaboration with Harvard Medical School, the National LGBT Health Education Center, and the Massachusetts League of Community Health Centers."

Back to the MacDonald piece:

A foundational tenet of academic feminism holds that alleged differences between males and females are socially constructed. This credo usually maximizes the opportunities for charging sexism, yet it will be discarded in an instant if acknowledging the innate biological and psychological differences between men and women yields an additional trove of feminist complaint. The current issue of the Yale Alumni Magazine shows how the game is played.
For years, medical research neglected "sex and gender differences" in health, according to the magazine. . . .

As noted in the piece, there were reasons that research was often often conducted on male subjects. But let's frame it in a way that will increase gender studies paychecks at universities.

In related news from Thompson's post, there's a new subject coming to an academic institution (AKA Clown Quarter) near you: Racial Capitalism.

Sounds like they're teaching skills that employers will be looking for. At least employers with a lot of time on their hands whose wish is to help their employees change society's racist standards for grammar and punctuation. So, pretty much all of their students will be working in ethnic studies departments in universities. Theoretically.

Heather MacDonald was a feminist when feminists were still allowed to read male writers. I always find it interesting when someone moves from the left to the right politically, as she did. When you have some time, you might want to put this podcast on, or look through the transcript.

I don't think I've ever seen such a look of misery and dejection on the face of my daughter as I just did a moment ago. She just couldn't understand why I couldn't explain to her where babies come from.

I sat down with her on the sofa and (as calmly as I could) tried to explain to her why I just no longer have the right words to describe the birth canal. "And yes honey, not everybody with a front hole can have a baby", I was forced to say.

I tried to keep my voice steady, but it became increasingly difficult - the rage and feelings of helplessness were just too much. I think my daughter could tell something was wrong. I found myself at such a loss for words - nothing made any sense; nothing makes sense anymore. I finally had to admit, "Honey, I just don't know - I don't know what's going on in this country anymore..."

When I finished her lower lip started to tremble and her eyes began to fill with tears, "Daddy" she said, "why are the feminists doing this to the vagina?" Well, that was it for me: I finally fell apart. She just fell into my arms and we both began sobbing for several minutes.

For once she had to comfort me and get me back on my feet. Sometimes I just think it's too much, but seeing the strength in my young daughter's voice helped me to get through.

And the beautiful part--to them--is that if anything that Trump touched goes tits-up after (if) they get him impeached, well, they can just blame Trump. Same with the great economy. If the Left gets in and fucks that up, it will be Trump's fault.

I'm not 100% sure what the rationale was behind the alternating loads; I have heard that a big brownie's skull is so friggin' hard, a slug can skip off it if it's not a square shot. The buck shot will hurt like hell, and could take out eye/eyes.

There seems to be a decent amount of evidence that multiple small wounds delivered more or less instantaneously deal a considerable shock to the nervous system equaling or greater than a single large wound. I.e., a dozen buckshot have a much larger effect than the sum of their wound channels would suggest.

The one kind that I'll use indoors is a non-pressurized alcohol burner like a Trangia. They're small and slow and and best suited for boiling a pint of water or heating up a can of soup, but I've used them with a window cracked open. I guess sterno cans are about the same.

I don't know if I would have tried it if I didn't have a battery-powered CO detector though.

CO is the result of incomplete combustion. A hot, blue flame on a properly-adjusted stove burner produces about zero CO, whether the stove burns white gas, propane, natural gas, or alcohol. Look at how many homes have natural gas ranges in the kitchen, year-round.

I would have no problem with using a two or three burner Coleman pressure stove indoors; in fact have been on camp jobs where we did just that, for weeks or months, no problem. Of course, one should have some ventilation, as a matter of course, but CO is not the issue.

I'm not 100% sure what the rationale was behind the alternating loads; I have heard that a big brownie's skull is so friggin' hard, a slug can skip off it if it's not a square shot. The buck shot will hurt like hell, and could take out eye/eyes.

There seems to be a decent amount of evidence that multiple small wounds delivered more or less instantaneously deal a considerable shock to the nervous system equaling or greater than a single large wound. I.e., a dozen buckshot have a much larger effect than the sum of their wound channels would suggest.

A school superintend in Georgia was fired last week for a racially charges rant (in a private conversation that was recorded somehow.) But that is not enough. He has a civil suit against him for racism/hate or whatever.
So now it is not just poor taste, hurtful and socially unacceptable to use racial slurs. Or sign of bad character. It is now illegal. And probably retroactive. I'm expecting most of the people I grew up with will soon be in the camps.

No ammonia. Urea is ammonia conjugated with the deadly pollutant carbon dioxide, and is of neutral pH (the conjugation is basically wrapping up ammonia just to avoid its toxic effects). Urine ends up smelling of ammonia only after bacterial action on it releases the ammonia and the carbon dioxide outgasses.

The vagina is somewhat acidic (to impede bacterial growth), about the same pH as the buffering point of acetic acid (pKa 4.95), which is why vinegar is used as a douche. So any ammonia that somehow found its way there would be protonated, as it buffers at a pH of ca. 10 (IIRC).
