THE South African government has begun the process of seizing land from white farmers.
Local newspaper City Press reports two game farms in the northern province of Limpopo are the first to be targeted for unilateral seizure after negotiations with the owners to purchase the properties stalled. While the government says it intends to pay, owners Akkerland Boerdery wanted 200 million rand ($18.7 million) for the land - they're being offered just 20 million rand ($1.87 million). 'Notice is hereby given that a terrain inspection will be held on the farms on April 5, 2018 at 10am in order to conduct an audit of the assets and a handover of the farm's keys to the state,' a letter sent to the owners earlier this year said. It's almost an indoor/outdoor space. There's a balcony over the canals, but the furnishings and wall hanging belong indoors. Is that big curtain the only protection from the elements? It looks like it's just after breakfast, but only one plate was set, and one glass of wine has been poured. She's quite enraptured. Did she feed him for the show? Is he singing for his supper? Is his name Paolo? Oh! He's looking at music. He probably knows his own, but he's trying to play her favorite songs. She's of the merchant class, with the prim black and white. 24 I'm sure this painting is rife with symbolism and I hope Kris comes along to tell us the (correct) interpretation. In the meantime I will note that the now on his shoes match the ones on his knees and his pantaloons. I have no idea what that means.
Posted by: bluebell at August 20, 2018 10:04 AM (JJZzu) I know nothing of this artist, but it looks like Dutch Baroque, possibly around Vermeer's era, but definitely not influenced by him. There are very few symbols here, that I can see. The dog is probably the most prominent. He usually means loyalty and fidelity (Fido), and when present which a couple, the fidelity of each to his/her mate. It can also be used ironically, in that the couple should be loyal to each other but aren't. I see no evidence here, however, that the artist intended the dog to mean anything negative or critical. I am very interested in the painting on the wall. It looks like a depiction of Jesus raising Lazarus. Paintings in the background can offer the viewer a sense of what mood or message the artist was going for. Other images, such as the fruit and clothing, give a look at what economic class we're looking at -- in case the quality of the dwelling didn't give it away. Posted by: Bandersnatch at August 20, 2018 10:16 AM (fuK7c) I think it is possible... possible, the artist is implying her innocence, to a certain extent. I mean, she's let him into her home, and she's fed him. And is listening to him, and as he leans in (their elbows are touching, for pete's sake), she leans in his direction. She's possibly not quite aware that she is being seduced, but before the day is through, she will be right and goodly bedded. Look at the eyes of the cat and the dog. They know what's what. The farmers, landowners, etc who were white got the hell out cuz the alternative was to have your farm overrun and you and your family murdered. When I was bartending in LA, I met a guy who owned a safari business on his land in Rhodesia. He was a regular and had a lot of interesting stories, but- he also had no doubts about what would happen if he stayed cuz he saw what happened to those who tried to fight legally or otherwise. He got out with his dogs and opened a guard dog business based around his Rhodesian Ridgebacks. He did quite well. The wealthy and well-known always want their property protected. After looking at it some more, there looks like a subtle message about salvation here. I mentioned the painting of Jesus and Lazarus. There is a grape vine outside the window and grapes on the table. There is also a goblet of wine and a loaf of bread. If that painting wasn't there, I'd say they were innocent symbols of plenty, but combined with the image of resurrection and salvation, they take on a greater meaning. If this is of the Holland School, then the religious imagery would be relegated to symbolic and have to be inferred. Posted by: Kris at August 20, 2018 10:31 AM (OyyDO) 174

Been a few weeks but several of you helped me in my quest to reduce our cable/satellite bill. We are now pretty much streaming with Roku and Directv Now and using a local antenna to access PBS.
The only problem I encountered was in trying to rid us of Directv. Since we were bundled using Directv for programming and ATT for internet I couldn't completely kill Directv or I would lose my unlimited internet. I should have known there was a reason that ATT doesn't bundle Directv Now with their other services. I have Roku devices on all of our tv's in our main home and one on our tv at the cottage. I worked out a deal with ATT to keep Directv at the cottage for $10/month with their Family package. The benefit is that we can get local channels through it and the balance through Directv Now and Roku. Tried to use the antenna for local channels at the cottage as well but had to hold it in my hand while standing outside. I love my husband but not that much so that he could check the local weather. It was an experience and thanks to all of you for your help. Wish we could kill it completely but my hubby couldn't easily get to Alaskan Bush People.
Posted by: Kris at August 20, 2018 10:31 AM (OyyDO) You seem to have decided that IS Jesus and Lazarus. Look closely... no halo. And the extended right arm... there is a sword. Does the cat under the table symbolize anything?
Posted by: bluebell at August 20, 2018 10:24 AM (JJZzu) I'm less versed on cat symbolism, but whenever I've seen them in art, they have a negative connotation, especially if it's near a woman. Probably because of their association with witches. I remember a lecture where the prof said the cat could mean a woman of loose morals or bad/evil character. I think that because Sorgh put it directly under the woman it means something referring to her. That it is asleep and under a table could mean that that symbolism is negated. The dog is the exact opposite. It is awake and alert. The two animals face each other, in similar poses. They could be mirroring each other. Notice also the dog is the same color as the cat, and a similar size, even though it looks like a Spaniel. Posted by: Kris at August 20, 2018 10:42 AM (OyyDO) 220

I really like these 1600s Dutch painters. The scenes are both pleasant and interesting. And I love the colors they use: often subdued but not dull and they always seem appropriate to the scene. I get lost in the image studying the details in the clothing, props, and the materials in the room and outside buildings.
BTW, Sorgh did a scene of ships in a rough sea that is remarkable. It is on the Wiki page for him. CBD, thanks for another pleasant way to start the week and learn about a wonderful artist. Posted by: JTB at August 20, 2018 10:50 AM (V+03K) 259

Behind the man on the ground is a cave. I first thought it was Jesus healing a sick man, until I saw the cave. It is really hard to tell what's going on, so whatever you see is just as correct as what I see. In the end, the painting is a lovely depiction of Dutch leisure. I'm not seeing all that much heat on Trump. Looks more to me like Brennan and crew know the jig is up and they are cornered. Rats tend to get excited when they are cornered. Trump is rolling this out in a very logical plan, this is far from the end of his tweets on this issue. It's just the beginning. I honestly don't understand anything, not one thing, about the rhubarb over John Brennan losing his security clearance.
I don't see any reason he should keep it. Is keeping a security clearance a human right? It does not hinder his freedom of speech. It may hinder his ability to make money but so what. Brennan has been deranged in his Trump hatred. I get confused about who said what idiotic thing but didn't he call for a military coup? Maybe it was somebody else, but I remember Brennan doing that. Hasn't he tweeted veiled threats at Trumps personal safety? I think the greater outrage is allowing a dangerous lunatic to keep his security clearance. yeah, Clapper seems to have said "hey, this was Brennan's coup, not mine" ... but they all knew and played along.
The theme (on DeepState being exposed) now is (imo) moving toward ... this goes back decades, and in essence goes back to our founding. Mueller the fixer ... was pretty clearly a "political op" by DeepState from the start, cover up for mob queen Hillary by attacking Trump. Centralized powers keep trying to centralize ... one guy says Adams didn't get what he wanted, so as president put more power in the judiciary, so that set a course for the "legislating from the bench" and "packing the courts" that we deal with now. idk that history ... some say the War of 1812 was as important as the Revolutionary War ... "a Republic, IF you can keep it". The internet gives us a good chance to reclaim the founder's intent, so they plotted to censor all "Americanism" patriots. Game on. In big news from 1976, The Eagles Greatest Hits album just now was certified as the best selling album of all time, with 38 million copies sold. Don't know what to make of this generations fascination with music from the 70's and 80's. This album, for example, was released 42 years ago. Heck, Glenn Frey has been dead for over two years! There's plenty of good music that's newer.... Posted by: Huck Follywood, Amtrak hater at August 20, 2018 10:40 AM (ULoJS) ** Strangely enough - I just learned to play Desperado on the guitar (not the lute) - it is an excellent song. The chord progression not that complex - but very lovely and a haunting melody. I also love the lyrics. I was saying to Mrs. Redux: "This is a truly great song . . . timeless really." Has there been better music made since the Eagles in the 70s? I would say "yes" but that doesn't mean that one should not appreciate a truly great pop/rock band that came up with some really timeless classics. Which leads me to another discussion we had over the weekend: With the passing of Aretha Franklin, and Ray Charles ten or so years back, where have all the great soul performers gone? Who has filled these vacuums from a male/female performer standpoint? My position was: no one - this line of great music and performers is dying out. The answers on the other side of the argument I did not find convincing (Bruno Mars? mmmm - perhaps - but really more RB and not purely "soul"). I throw it out there for the horde to discuss. I used to read about the destruction of the farms in Zimbabwe by Mugabe kicking the white farmers off their farms. Often by force and I believe Mugabe just kicked them off with no compensation. The farmers had been there for generations. The new owners knew nothing about farming, so what happened, you know the rest.
