The Morning Rant

talking ape.jpg
"If there's any organization that's even worse at self-awareness than the MSM, at how bad they look in the eyes of others, and are completely clueless about it, it would have to be the Roman Catholic Church. Last week, Pennsylvania investigators released a 1300+ page report that detailed thousands of cases of child molesting by over 300 predator priests in 6 dioceses, and what does the Church do? First, nothing. Yes, I heard about their official statement which I'll get to in a bit, but the important thing is that the Pope has not said one damn thing about it. A case of this magnitude demands some king of visible, demonstrable act of contrition from the man at the top, but Frankie has been completely AWOL. And the Vatican's official statement is mighty weak beer. First, there's blather about 'shame' and 'sorrow', but they always say that. And then, and this is where we get to the cluelessly unself-aware part, it says there's been 'almost no' cases 2002, so, presumably, everything is OK now. Really? Do they really think now is the time to brag about the new shiny lock they put on the barn after it has burned down? Even if it's correct, I don't think most pew Catholics want to hear about that just now. It's like the old Monthy Python skit about how there's no cannibalism in the Royal Navy. I don't think anybody is satisfied with statements about 'shame' and 'sorrow'. One can easily conclude that once again, the Catholic Church is circling the wagons to protect its own. Not until the Catholic Church opens up an independent investigation, starting with the College of Cardinals and working throughout the seminaries and then down to the ranks of the parish priests, and rooting out every last sexual predator and enabler, will justice be done. Because, despite the bragging about no cases since 2002, you can bet there is child molesting going on now that won't come out until 2025 or 2030 or later. The Inquisition has a bad rap, but maybe it's time for another one."

I used to read about the destruction of the farms in Zimbabwe by Mugabe
kicking the white farmers off their farms. Often by force and I believe
Mugabe just kicked them off with no compensation. The farmers had been
there for generations. The new owners knew nothing about farming, so
what happened, you know the rest.

Some bishops have. From a letter by Bishop Robert Morlino, Diocese of Madison (!):

"But to be clear, in the specific situations at hand, we are talking about deviant sexual - almost exclusively homosexual - acts by clerics. We're also talking about homosexual propositions and abuses against seminarians and young priests by powerful priests, bishops, and cardinals. We are talking about acts and actions which are not only in violation of the sacred promises made by some, in short, sacrilege, but also are in violation of the natural moral law for all. To call it anything else would be deceitful and would only ignore the problem further."

I'm not offended-- in fact I think the Church should allow married priests.
But that WILL open up a whole new can of worms. They will have to put the needs of The Church and the flock OVER the needs of their own families, and how many women will put up with that? Then what about divorce? Alimony? Adultery? Hetero priests seducing young women who come to them for spiritual guidance?
All of these issues will arise.

It probably not a bad as your imaging it will be. Take a book, as a lot of time is waiting for something to happen. I've seen attempts to justify that the "office" of the Church is still legitimate and used by God, so no harm no foul. I just don't see how someone that has committed one of the most heinous acts imaginable will be used by God. I don't think this will help. Child molesters don't molest young children because they can't get women. They molest because they're developed a taste for molesting young children. Marriage doesn't fix that.

Besides, most of the molesting is of the homosexual variety, so should the Church allow gay marriage?

162 Marriage aint fixing the problem.

This is a homo-pedo issue.

My guess is that the RC church doesn't ban gay priests because they can't. There just aren't enough men willing to undertake a life of celibacy.

Admittedly, other denominations have problems with staffing, but they're not anywhere near as severe as the RCs.

And as someone pointed out, other denominations have married priests, and deal with the problems reasonably well.

166 Celibacy isn't the problem. The Episcopal Church (and the CofE) have long had the same problem. And that dates back to long before the godless goddess brigade took over.

And one thing non-Catholics don't often understand. If someone really believes in Catholicism, no matter how disgusted he is, he cannot switch to another church. Because on the basis of his beliefs, there really isn't one. Beggars can't be choosers. Erasmus and More are examples of men who, at the time, flayed the Church's corruption, but couldn't join the Protestants.

170 The Catholic Church has a swamp problem, just like our government. We keep winning elections ... yet nothing ever changes. And despite scandal after scandal being exposed in the RCC, nothing changes. There were intentional, systematic coverups of abuse. That doesn't just happen by accident. Unfortunately for RCC parishioners, their theology doesn't give them the luxury of going elsewhere.

I suppose Magisterium could propose some law such as "no one adult allowed to be in the company of children, it must be two or more", but then what if those two were namblites? I think the only solution would be to allow married priests, but that won't happen.

Paul's remarks weren't directed towards clergy, but rather the Corinthian church as a whole. Whether it should be applied to the Church Universal or should be taken as advice geared towards a particular situation in what was obviously a very troubled church is another question.

I'm not downplaying the latest report, and I cannot speak for its veracity because trial lawyers corrupt every legitimate claim in the U.S., nonetheless, its a relatively limited, albeit it disgraceful, disgusting and malevolent group.
In this act they've not only betrayed others, their faith and common decency, but basic church doctrine and more importantly the teaching of Jesus Christ.
Remember the organized "church" is not Jesus Christ or salvation. It is simply one embodiment of what Christ wanted to "build" upon Peter.
I dare say we almost never see these organized accusations and campaigns against any other religion, or faction of Christians. I believe that's deliberate, and partly based in evil.
Just like the evil that perpetrates these acts in the first place.

This notion the church has not moved against the perpetrators or somehow "from the top" directed a cover up, is without a basis in fact. It's more a legal construct used to gain compensation, than some type of atonement.
The perpetrators should be punished to the full extent of the law. But I am growing a bit tired of the nonsense this is somehow a ubiquitous problem, encouraged by a general attitude of church acceptance and hidden for reasons of evading responsibility. That's absolute unfounded nonsense and antithetical to church teachings.

No, but you're neglecting self-selection bias.

People are drawn to the priesthood in part because of the official squelching of sexual desires. They're either looking for a safe space to repress their desires or (I think far less frequently) they see a target-rich environment.

It's not that marriage will make a molester no longer want to molest, it's that marriage will open up the candidate pool to men who don't want to make promises they don't want to keep, i.e. normals.

That was debated out in Augustine's time. It was an issue against the Donatists. If God cannot use sinners, He's pretty much got to perform direct miracles all the time. And that is not how it works.

This is by no means a uniquely Catholic position. For instance, to use the Anglican formulation "The sins of the minister hindereth not the efficacy of the sacrament." It was accepted by Lutherans and Calvinists, too. And the Orthodox.

Really, there is virtually nothing that hasn't crossed the mind of practicing Catholics. The trouble is the one Johnson cited, that mankind needs more often to be reminded than instructed. And we live in a world where all the powerful forces have been striving to wipe out memory of the past.

Pep, the reason married clergy would work in the short term is it would force out the homosexuals just because you'd have big numbers of new men who would take a serious look at the priesthood if they didn't have to be celibate. But there would be lots of other problems, like how do you support a family for starters. I am a little biased, we had a Protestant minister living across the street from us when I was a kid, his wife seemed to be considered free labor for the church and they seemed to be under financial stress. I'm sure it varies wildly by the particular congregation.

234 I'm not trying to be disrespectful of the faithful Catholics, but I can't figure out why there has been no comment on what happens if a priest is fresh from poking a choir boy. Does the communion wine and wafers still transform into the blood and body of Christ? And what about confession to a priest that still smells from playtime? I've seen attempts to justify that the "office" of the Church is still legitimate and used by God, so no harm no foul. I just don't see how someone that has committed one of the most heinous acts imaginable will be used by God. I mean, not that I believe in Roman doctrine, but still....I just can't imagine how this wouldn't cross the minds of practicing Catholics.

237 The Church certainly has its problems, but if indeed there have been significantly fewer issues since the instituted reforms of 2002, and that most of this latest junk is just more of the same from prior to this reform, why all the hype? Yes, the Church's hierarchy willingness to accept homosexuality is a problem, and a significant one. But isn't this gay priest/teenage boy issue that which elements of the left condone and in fact are advancing as the next step in our sexual liberation?

I don't know about all of the cases but I was pretty familiar with the Massachusetts scandals.

The hierarchy deliberately moved problem priests around to avoid detection. They ended up serving as a virtual procurement ring, not just protecting but enabling.

And when the kingpin of the whole enterprise, Bernard Francis Law, was uncovered he was called to the Vatican to live out his days.

Corrupt right from the top.

Furthermore, I've been around the church my entire life and had the opportunity to encounter a fair degree of clergy and people in the church hierarchy.

Having said all that I can comfortably repeat that despite all it's flaws and some very real perpetrators of evil acts, my point this is not ubiquitous or acceptable in any corner I'm familiar with is truth.

That is not a rationalization, it is a fundamental theological point, and not limited to Catholicism.

There are no perfect people, there are no perfect clergy. If God only works through perfect people, and there are no perfect people, than the very concept of a sacrament - which includes baptism and marriage - is meaningless. Pretty obvious, I'd think.

One doesn't have to be a Catholic - I'm not - to see why it is a pretty important point.

Yeah, I wasn't really clear there and I actually agree. What I meant was that celibacy drives away many desirable candidates because they recognize it's pernicious effects on their lives. You have to have a gang ... everybody has gangs now ... DeepState being the biggest I suppose ... America land of liberty was to protect from the gangs ... all the individual, but the gangs still form to the degree they are allowed. They become covert, or as with Chicago and "The Boss" (Daly, then his son, now Madigan) ... they rule rather openly.

Some local communities have their lawyer/judge cabals with divisions, but still the guild protects its own. The thin blue line of cop "gangs", but certainly churches or other groups can protect their own as well. Gangs tend to win, even if they are not the MS-13 types.

So now Trump is trying to unite the people against the DC Gang, and Dems and DeepState are trying to keep the people fighting each other.

Reassigning guilty priests was the wrong thing to do, but--and I'm not excusing the practice--the prevailing wisdom of the leftist socilological and psychological "experts" back in the 60's and '70's , when this was going on ,was that that sexual deviants could be "rehabilitated" and put back into society. So it's another example of how leftist thought corrupts EVERYTHING it touches.
It's similar today with the Left pushing for the Boy Scouts to admit homosexual scout leaders, The same people pushing for this will be representing the sexually abused 20 or 30 years from now.
The left destroys EVERYTHING.

303 Paul's remarks weren't directed towards clergy, but rather the Corinthian church as a whole. Whether it should be applied to the Church Universal or should be taken as advice geared towards a particular situation in what was obviously a very troubled church is another question.
----
.... before there *was* a "clergy". Paul speaks about Apostles, Evangelists, Prophets, Pastors, Preachers/Teachers, Elders and Deacons. No "clergy".

Why wouldn't it apply to the clergy anyway--or at least those who join the clergy when they probably shouldn't have?

I'm pretty certain that the church's decision on celibacy reflects Paul's teaching that it is better (for service to God) not to marry. Given that case, it's central to the doctrine about celibacy. (As a Protestant, I actually remark that it seems to me that many Protestants would tend to *wonder* what's wrong with a celibate pastor, despite representing themselves as having more reliance on the literal words of scripture.)

However, it is better to marry than to burn--and act out--in lust. This applies whether or not you've imagined that you can be celibate, doesn't it?

I'm not making the argument for married priests, I'm making the argument for reasoned assessment of one's lust. The history of the Church in having had married clergy suggests an argument to married clergy. And perhaps the decision to push all would-be servants of God to the perfect lifestyle expression of ministry was the ill-considered step.

Strictly speaking, that's backward. The Church actually does have married priests. Those in the Easter Rite Churches have always been so, and converted married Orthodox priests have always remained priests. More recently, first Anglican, the Lutheran married clergy have been admitted to ordination as priest. (Unlike the Eastern cases, the Protestant converts' are not recognized as already ordained.)

But there is one constant theme in all these cases: A married man can become a priest, but a priest cannot marry. That is also the Orthodox rule. You must marry before ordination, or remain celibate.

The whole question, though is phony. It's the product of an age in which sexual love and satisfaction are placed as the highest human good. And the Church ain't buying that, however much the attitude may seep into her members' minds. The deification of sexual love has been going on less than half as long as the Church has been around.

324 The priest who did our wedding ended up being named in a scandal. He did seem a little light in the loafers. The fucked up thing was that he was a pretty cool priest. He went out of his way to fit our wedding in on a day that they really didn't have an opening on their schedule. The big problem was we found the perfect place for the reception, and
they had a 2 year waiting list, but there was a cancellation that we
managed to get and it was only 6 months away. We wanted that church because the wife went to catholic school there as a kid, and its the church I made my communion and confirmation in.

At first they couldn't do it, it was just too soon, so we tried the church in the area where we were moving, but they put us through the frigging ringer. I wanted to punch that priest in the face with a fire hydrant. The fuck face fuck actually broke out a calculator, told us how much we needed to donate, and even though we didn't live in the area yet demanded we be there every week or, in his exact words " I don't care what arrangements you made, or how much money you spent, but if i don't see you here every week, I will not marry you on the day of your wedding". Well, little ol' berserker me told the priest I'll see him in hell, and we walked out. We went back to our original church and told them what happened, and the priest felt bad and chiseled out a time slot for us. He even waived all those pre-cana requirements since we dated for so long. I don't know what happened to that priest, but he pulled a miracle.

Different passage, in a different epistle. When Paul wrote that it was better not to marry, he was writing to the entirety of the Corinthian church. One must either interpret it to mean that ALL Christians are better off not marrying, or to mean that refraining from marriage was advice intended for the Corinthian church alone as a response to the sexual problems that that particular congregation. Claiming it as grounds for the celibacy of clergy alone is plain silly.

Elsewhere Paul lays out the requirements for deacons and elders/priests, one of which is that they be a man of one wife. Nowhere does he say that they should not marry.

347 I want to tread carefully here, so as not to offend. With that said, the fundamental problem with the RC church's response to pedophilia is that they are taking a gun-control approach to it, and they are getting much the same results.

You can no more stop these priests from acting on their urges than you can stop the tide. Like gun control, they are trying to legislate human emotions, which is madness in this case.

The root of the problem lies in answering the question "why are we getting all of these people in our ranks?"

Perhaps they should ask St. Paul, who was married and discusses this very thing. Or maybe the first Pope, St. Peter, who was also married.

The answer is as old as Christianity itself. If only the RC church had the courage to confess that they had gotten it very, very wrong.

You will find miscreants and scum in every organized group, from the USMC down to the Lutherans. Humans are human. However, there is a very good reason why you see far less of this particular cancer in the Corps or the Lutheran Church than you do with the RC church.

It is *so* obvious as to be comical, if it wasn't so tragic.

The RC church is dying, rapidly. If they don't fix this, and soon, then they are doomed. Very few people, and no mentally healthy ones, will continue to support this kind of thing.

Common sense tells you that if it is true in PA, it's certainly true in the other 49 states - and globally.

The church has to admit that they got the doctrine wrong. It's just wrong.

The notion that sexual and romantic good for man WAS a deification, which started in the Middle Ages. (Hence Macauley's gibe that, along with gunpowder, they introduced the two most destructive forces in the world.)

It gradually grew and became the summum bonum for mankind. You can see this in contrasting 18th & 19h C lit. Then, in the 20th, sex alone starts to eclipse the romantic side.

And of course, it took until the 21st C for this attitude to be read into the Constitution.

But it will pass, after doing as much harm as possible. Then Satan will come up with something else.

357 I grew up RC and was never molested by any of the priests thank G-d, but it was always sort of known. I had, at one time, thought married priests would help. Until I met an Episcopal priest who'd been married four times. Originally, it was not required to be celibate. As the church grew wealthier, and most bishops in the Middle Ages were considered nobles, the question arose of inheritance. Bishops wanted their sons to inherit their seat. Rome wanted to control who got it. So, for at least the bishops and up, marriage was disallowed, but mistresses were accepted because any children would be officially bastards and ineligible for inheritance. Priests on the parish level were ordered into celibacy but so long as it wasn't blatant it could be safely ignored.
Now, the church is in a crisis of men who want the job so as with so much else, standards get lowered.

South Africa begins seizing white-owned farms

That was fast.

And this is not some mere "weird news" from some irrelevant far-off land -- this could initiate a major international economic meltdown. South Africa has the second-largest economy in the whole continent of Africa (edged out by Nigeria), and unlike Nigeria is fully integrated with the international economy. If the land seizures continue, most whites - -and most wealth - -will flee the country, and the SA economy will collapse. When that happens, it will take the whole region with it. All sorts of market crashes and economic meltdowns will ensue.

I can only hope this doesn't dampen the soaring Trumpconomy.

Only upside: More refugees looking like Candice Swanepoel will apply for asylum in the US.

392 King Otto of the HRE was so impressed by men of faith that he thought they would make the best and most trustworthy political emissaries.

But when you inject into society the dynamic that any lower-born or unlanded son can join the clergy and be promoted into a position of trust, ambitious men entered the priesthood to be put into these positions. And emissaries for the Empire became power and information brokers, the Church started amassing wealth and property and capable of attracting more ambitious men.

Let me state unequivocally that this is not a general argument against the Church, then or now. It is simply an analysis of how special level of access to an object of desire in the office of virtue can affect *who* that office attracts.

We showed no care for the little ones; we abandoned them. I make my own the words of the then Cardinal Ratzinger when, during the Way of the Cross composed for Good Friday 2005, he identified with the cry of pain of so many victims and exclaimed: "How much filth there is in the Church, and even among those who, in the priesthood, ought to belong entirely to [Christ]! How much pride, how much self-complacency! Christ's betrayal by his disciples, their unworthy reception of his body and blood, is certainly the greatest suffering endured by the Redeemer; it pierces his heart. We can only call to him from the depths of our hearts: Kyrie eleison - Lord, save us! (cf. Mt 8:25)" (Ninth Station).

Um, the rates of molestation are actually falling since 2000 in the Catholic Church once they began admitting they had a problem.

The other churches have the same problem. Some are just beginning to make their own admissions. Same problem, with married clergy. The schools are worse, probably because the kids are there much longer each week. Lots of married teachers.

There are arguments to be made for allowing priests to marry. I'm not arguing for or against. But this argument that married priests would solve this abuse issue is silly and not supported by the facts.

I grew up RC and was never molested by any of the priests thank G-d, but
it was always sort of known. I had, at one time, thought married
priests would help. Until I met an Episcopal priest who'd been married
four times. Originally, it was not required to be celibate. As the
church grew wealthier, and most bishops in the Middle Ages were
considered nobles, the question arose of inheritance. Bishops wanted
their sons to inherit their seat. Rome wanted to control who got it. So,
for at least the bishops and up, marriage was disallowed, but
mistresses were accepted because any children would be officially
bastards and ineligible for inheritance. Priests on the parish level
were ordered into celibacy but so long as it wasn't blatant it could be
safely ignored.

Now, the church is in a crisis of men who want the job so as with so much else, standards get lowered.

imo the "global economy" has revolved around the American consumer. We have been the demand side driver, others are far more limited and generally have required access to our markets to thrive. So we get commie cheaters China on the supply side, offering nothing to the demand side except in them buying resources around the globe (including here, including our politicians and influence in our schools).
The American miracle would be to cut off the cheaters that only want to supply, but still be commies/enemies, and bring production back to the US back to the US back the USA. We don't know how lucky we are boyz ... but with our debt it will be some tricky business.

But we are in the driver's seat, and even if market's tank, that is paper promises fake market "money" that goes back to money heaven (Joe Kernan line, on "where does all that 'money' go?") ... we could perhaps keep the job market and real economy strong. RealAmerica has to reclaim its government, for starters ...

---
I didn't say that he ever said they should not marry. That's not my point at all.

But here they are together: 1 Corinthians 7:1-2
---
1 Now concerning the things about which you wrote, it is good for a man not to touch a woman. 2 But because of immoralities, each man is to have his own wife, and each woman is to have her own husband.
---
This is not specifically about Corinth. It's a well-supportable reading that he is introducing the answer to a specific question by starting with a general principle.

Also, this rather echoes Jesus *hard* teachings about marriage in Matthew 19. You either make yourself a "eunuch for God", or you marry one and only one woman to fulfill the Lord's teaching on marriage. The Lord even says that some have made themselves "eunuchs for God"--i.e. the service of God. It's as if to say that some men, devoted to God, don't even indulge themselves in one woman--let alone get a new one every time they get bored.

We built the platform for feminism. The Beat Generation was all about men leaving their families to "find themselves", victimizing the women left holding the bag, so feminism had to come along and equal things out.

Along the way, there was much confusion about what "equality between the sexes" meant.
