Disney Stands Firm on James Gunn Firing, Despite Cast and Marvel Studios Demanding He Be Re-Hired;
His Pedophilia-Themed Halloween Party Pictures Might Have Something to Do With That
What's the Corposervatives' position on this now? Every time we criticize a corporation for free-speech firings, they tell us that is a shameful degradation of poor defenseless billion or trillion dollar corporation's speech rights; yet they feel perfectly justified themselves in criticizing corporations when they shit-can a liberal or one of their Corporate Conservative buddies.
So, Disney fired Gunn for pedophilia jokes. A lot of pedophilia jokes. The Corporatists praised Disney/ABC for defending their oh-so-important corporate image by firing Roseanne Barr. But when Disney fired a leftwing Trump opponent -- who, by the way, himself celebrated Disney/ABC's firing of Roseanne Barr for objectionable tweets -- the defenders of poor defenseless corporations' free speech rights started singing a different show tune entirely. No longer was it just a Private Business' Unchallengeable Right to fire any employee who scuffed up their image. Now -- and only now -- there were Important Citizen Free Speech Concerns to consider as well, now suddenly an actual human being's right to free speech had to be balanced with corporate speech rights. For some reason, individual speech rights were not a factor worth mentioning at all in the Barr firing. Nor the firing of any other right-leaning person. (Except in cases where NeverTrumpers are threatened, of course.) Suddenly it was not only permissible to question a Holy Corporation's free-speech-by-firing rights, but morally necessary. Well, anyway, despite Dave Bautista and other Guardians of the Galaxy cast members threatening to maybe quit if Gunn weren't hired back, Disney has announced it is standing firm in its original Private Business Decision. I'm not sure why Disney stuck to its guns on this -- I thought for sure they would fold. I think this firing was originally a fake one, fake like Christopher Steele's firing seems to have been. A temporary firing with lots of opportunity to sneak back in through the back door. I figured Disney was actually in on the seemingly organic "Rehire Gunn" agitation. Maybe they were. But then this happened: someone unearthed these pictures of James Gunn posing as a pedophile priest for a Halloween party, along with women dressed as underaged girls. Speaking for the Boston Archdiocese and NH, we cleaned house when the scandal broke here. Those that were still alive and known to be abusers were defrocked and forced out of the priesthood. Now granted, when it happened here, that was the cue for all the other dioceses in the US to do the same. They all knew that they had their own "problems". The fact they sat on it and stayed quiet is an abomination.

A (couple of?) former seminarian has reported that there was excessive drinking and sexual shenanigans amongst seminarians as well as seminary religious. The faith, which the church believes is handed down by the apostles, the belief in the Sacrament of the Eucharist becoming the body and blood of Jesus Christ , belief in the intercession of the Mary and the Saints. i would encourage you at this time to cling to the intercessions of the Saints and the Eucharist and not to let your feelings about corrupt priests and hierarchy get in the way of your relationship with Christ, with a church that i assume has long been part of your life. Of course there are good and faithful priests and this is agonizing for them too because they all get tarred with the same brush. In addition, the perps who have died have already faced judgement as will the ones who will go to meet God. if you have a priest you like i would go to talk to him about it.

There'd be no way to know when was the right moment. Social mores just change, change, change, ever so slowly, rarely announced or described in the media, until one day, years later, you wake up and realize that society's social code has fundamentally changed, and yet the shift was never officially declared.
The only two distinct "moments" where a big change was identifiable in this regard was the Roe v. Wade decision being announced in 1973, and then the Gay Marriage Supreme Court ruling in 2015. In those two instances you can identify the very moment when a formally taboo thing became "normalized." But in most other cases, it was little by little, giving you no chance to "resist."

Fenelon was much more eloquent than I, but remember the church is made up of sinners. ALL of us have sinned and fallen short of the Glory of God. If you no longer are comfortable in the Catholic church, but want to worship, seek another denomination, or simply read your Bible, and pray. I believe God wants us to have fellowship with other Christians, but I also think He understands when we need a break, and need time alone to think and pray-Jesus did this often, as I recall.
I recently left my church over several issues, and although it was the right thing to do, I am still grieving over it. Fortunately, faithful friends who pray without ceasing are praying over me, and that makes a big difference. If you need that kind of prayer, this is a great place to ask for it. There are some true prayer warriors around here.

Feelings of anger and betrayal should be expected. Quite honestly, I think an action we can take is to start drafting letters to our bishops. Ours did comment on the cardinal who stepped down, and stated that we have policies/procedures in place, etc. Well written, but I think as this PA scandal unfolds it necessitates more assurances.A concerted letter writing campaign that is respectful and to the point - is the best option. Many are talking about withholding donations to the church, but that will only impact your own parish, which in the mid to long term could result in its closure. But the bishops need to hear from us, their flock. Get it ALL out in the open, consequences be what they may. Only then can we truly start the healing process and rebuild.

The grand jury is claiming all this stuff was in the bishop's file cabinet, just a few feet from his desk. The real scandal here isn't that there were x number of pedo priests. It's that the church hierarchy tried to handle everything in-house, and did so in many cases by moving the bad actors to a different parish.

Yeah. The rate is lower than that of public school teachers, given the number of people involved over such a long time period. But as I noted above, that's not the real scandal.

I think the child pornography found on James Gunn's laptop was what killed him at Disney. LA County didn't prosecute (because of course they didn't) but it was still found and word got around.
I can't think of any other reason Gunn wouldn't be raising the roof trying to get his job back. He knows what he did.

Its not going away anytime soon either.
None of these priests should have been able to make it into, let alone out of, a seminary.
There are things that will eventually see the light as it relates to the seminaries.
It is a diabolical work coming to fruition.
Frankly its been foretold in various ways in various ages by about a dozen different saints. Interesting time to be alive.

It's not a fantasy - it is a calm, moral decision, taken far in advance, of what the point would be where I, personally, would have to give up on the law and start organizing people privately to do what the law is no longer capable of doing. There's a lot of precedent for that in culture, in fact in most of the world today. If justice cannot be obtained publicly, it must be carried out privately. People tend not to realize that is why it is so important to maintain a functioning and effective system of justice - because when it fails, all hell will break loose, and people like me will be the ones who make sure it breaks loose.
Also, not a good comparison to sexual promiscuity - not many of us are or ever were concerned about what went on between 2 adults, even way back when. That was never the issue. Destroying children's lives though - yes, that is worth killing for. If it comes to that point.

Everyone on the Left swoons over this quote. Such wisdom! Such insight!
However, when I first heard it, my reaction was:
Hell yeah it leaves the whole world blind. Better that than ME being blind while the sadistic tormentor who blinded me is still able to see!
That's the whole principle behind the Audrey Hepburn movie "Wait Until Dark," in which a blind woman is stalked by violent criminals, but at the climactic moment she turns out all the lights and "levels the playing field" by essentially blinding them as well.
What happens in the theater when she turns out the lights? The audience cheers. Because they see how unfair it is for a innocent person to be blind while the villain can see. And it'd be even worse if it was (as in the gandhi scenario) the villain who blinded you in the first place.
So yeah, I'd rather live in a scenario where "the whole world was blind" than one in which only the bad guys could see. And similarly, I'd rather live in a scenario where EVERYONE is forced to play by unfair rules, rather than JUST ME being forced to play by unfair rules while the bullies get to ignore them.
Would I prefer a world with no unfair rules? Of course. But, thanks to the bullies, that world is now gone. The only way to restore a fair world is to force our overseers to endure their own unfair rules. Only then will they stop enforcing the rules at all.

The Church has always had problems like this, too. Back in the 1990s I wrote a history paper on a local parish and they let me go into the Catholic archives to do my research. I found a letter from a priest who was in a rehab in Canada because of his drinking. Really heartbreaking stuff. This was around the time of the Great War. I found another account of a local priest who got into an automobile accident in the 1920s. He was drunk and there was a known prostitute in his car. The account didn't come out and say it, but it was a very touchy situation as you can imagine.
All of that happened one hundred years ago. The RC is like any other human institution in that it's fallible because it's made up of humans. The Church will survive this. It's survived very bad things before.

Hate crimes: anything having to do with Title IX, uttering the n-word, saying impolite stuff about Islam in public, preventing minorities from voting, separating mothers and children at the border, impinging the integrity of the CIA or the FBI.
Other crimes may be crimes, but they aren't crime-crimes. On a scale from 1 to 10 they don't register.
Why can't we all put politics aside for once? You don't want to bring back censorship, do you? This kind of behavior shows that conservatives are as much of a danger to free speech as socialists.

My take, exactly.
I suspect that he was "joking" in the same sense that Sheryl Crow was "joking" about using a single sheet of toilet paper, viz., putting something out there (in her case, signaling virtue) that could be walked back as a "joke" if it met with resistance or scorn.
