Open Thread

I've gotten behind so here's an open thread. I was just doing too many passenger ship icons.

Here's something: CATO Institute now arguing for leaky John Brennan's apparent perpetual property right in a security clearance.*

Pretty much all the Donor Class institutions of Corporate Favor-Banking are now arrayed against us. We're on our own, guys.

But at least the masks have come off.

And Admiral Bill McRaven says, "I would consider it an honor if you would revoke my security clearance as well, so I can add my name to the list of men and women who have spoken up against your presidency...The criticism will continue until you become the leader we prayed you would be."

I say do it. I also say he can voluntarily relinquish it if he wants that honor.

Of course, he won't be able to make bank anymore taking jobs which require that clearance.

Oh, and to be honest, let's face it, a lot of those jobs offered to former senior military/DoD people kind of fake-jobs; people pay them, supposedly, for "consulting," but what they're really paying for is to have someone with connections in the Pentagon to act as a friendly persuader on their behalf.

A lot of times these "consulting" gigs are not really created so that the client can receive the "consultant's" thoughts, but so that the client can send the "consultant" to share the client's thoughts with those currently embedded in decision-making and contract-awarding positions in government.

I don't know much about McRaven, but I do know a lot of retired generals make bank in what are essentially barely-disguised lobbying gigs.

But I guess he's not in the game for that.

Yeah, so, if he doesn't want the security clearance, then he should have it revoked. The only point of letting him keep it is to, hypoethetically, be able to receive classified briefings if Trump needs his advice, but he obviously does not wish to advise Trump, and ergo, there is no interest to the American people in him retaining it. There's a big pecuniary benefit to McRaven in keeping it, but given that he's not animated by such selfish concerns, then it's no skin off anyone's nose to cancel it.

Sad!

This morning, my 4 year old came up to me and said "Dad, living dangerously, I'm scared that Trump's revoking Brenan's security clearance represents his authoritarian tendencies." I just had to shed a tear because I didn't know what to say.

Posted by: joe, living dangerously

* People are taking this "perpetual property right" literally. That's my own snarky characterization of it. They don't really argue that. But the assumption seems to be, deep down, that Brennan has "earned" this thing and has a vested interest in it which apparently trumps the president's estimation of his future value as a trusted security-cleared adviser, or his estimation that he has no such future value.

The president has determined that Brennan is likely a leaker, with very good reason, and that leaving a security clearance in his hands is actually just empowering him to receive leaks and then disseminate them in the future.

When I first read aboput the American couple who died while biking through Tajikistan, it was described as a "car accident." Only later did it emerge that the people driving the car were creepy Muslims. And no mention was made of the political views of the American bicyclists.

But now all is revealed: The Americans were total flaming moonbats INTENTIONALLY traveling through purportedly dangerous Muslim-filled terror areas in order to prove that "Evil is a make-believe concept we’ve invented to deal with the complexities of fellow humans holding values and beliefs and perspectives different than our own." And the car-accident part of their death was not really germane to their fate -- what happened is that they were butched by knife-weilding ISIS members who intentionally targeted them:

102 I did some consulting work for a defense contractor. Pretty much everyone I worked with there was ex-military, who retired with a pretty high ranks. Their job - which paid $200K+ was to play golf with their former subordinates who were still in the military and make sure when it came time to buy stuff, it was bought from their company. It was a YUUUGE eye opening for me about how that worked and went a long way to explain how $700 hammers can be a thing. The corruption runs far and wide and these were supposedly "the good guys". Sadly there are no good guys within a 50 mile radius of DC. This company was based in NoVa like all the rest.

103 I mentioned on Tuesday that my polling place in NW WI ran out of ballots in mid afternoon. Turnout must have been waaay higher than they expected. I took a look at data for this off-presidential year fall primary vs the one in 2014. In my county, 8,421 votes were cast this Tuesday vs 2,851 in 2014. Republican voters totaled 4,088 Tuesday vs 1,183 in 2014. Dems were 4,333 vs 1,668.

No 2 primaries are ever equal. For example, there are US Senate primaries this year and there weren't in 2014. That alone will drive better turnout. But what I was really looking for is some sign of a blue wave. And you can see there is no such thing in the above numbers.

BTW, in the 2016 presidential election, 31,000 total votes were cast in my county.

I mean, who are they reaching out to? Who do they figure they are appealing to?

And why on earth would anyone think having a security clearance revoked is "punishment" in any case? This is a privilege, a special responsibility, not a human right or presumption.

162 I live close to a government-centric town, a lot of DoE and DoD types around.

I'm always amazed at what those clearances are worth. For a lot of low level shlubs, having the clearances is the actual job.

For instance if a sub-contractor comes in to fix the roof or do a plumbing job, they must have a security clearance or hire a cleared escort.

So you might have a dozen Juans and Carloses up on the roof doing work that aren't even citizens, but you'll have one cleared individual sitting down in a chair making $60 an hour to be present while the roof is getting fixed.

If the contractor does federal work frequently, then of course they hire on a couple of cleared individuals to sit around when needed.

It's kinda crazy.

Their bike trek was to prove this "I want to Give the World A Coke" commercial dream to be true and shame us nasty conservatives who are, obviously, just "H8rs." They then biked to an ISIS controlled territory where they were summarily run over and, while prone, stabbed repeatedly until dead. Don't bother to click on the left leaning Pluralist site - they tell the story with a "Some evil conservatives are making fun of these poor unfortunates" twist to it and, just to show that they have not gotten the message that the senseless murder of these two misguided progressives is clearly broadcasting in the shrill tones of an air raid siren, they end the article with this laughable statement:"Some liberals, for their part, view [the cyclists] as simply unfortunate. Ed Koch and Donald Trump are very much alike in that Ed Koch loved NYC heart and soul and Donald Trump loves the United States of America heart and soul and, beneath the bluster, both of them want (well, wanted in Koch's case) to do what they thought was best for the city/country they loved and who gives a flying rat's ass about party ideals and the like. Tim Hildebrand of Galt says the attack happened at a Social Distortion concert at the Ace of Spades in Midtown. Hildebrand says he grew up listening to the bands music and was excited to attend one of their shows, but never thought he'd leave bloody and bruised at the hands of a famous musician.

yeah the magic paper money machine of the stock/bond/ipo markets have made some people wealthy in their little neighborhoods, where they invested their hard earned income and can now reinvest in their neighborhoods ... support their communities.

that is the bright side ... BUT much of their wealth came by that magic money going to use slaves and pollute in China (and the rest). We built that ... Chinese infrastructure and military and their acquisitions around the globe. (thanks Hillary, Mitch, Feinstein, etc.)

And the paper profits helped the middle guy, but the leveraged connected "elite" became worth trillions, and globalists bought the government, and trillion dollar failures were given bailouts and immunity like candy. Wall Street shot Main Street in broad daylight and was not prosecuted.

But yes, they are more exposed now ... not sure that is stopping them, but we see where the fight is ... in part.

It's not easy because every time another movement starts, it gets corrupted by hucksters, it seems. Certainly the Tea Party seemed to get derailed by con artists coming in an hoovering up all the donations.

But the base, if it were willing to donate, and if the donations could be properly directed, could outweigh the donor class pretty easily, I bet. NRA is a quasi example of this.

I buy them for a side when we are grilling something.. easy peasy.. We only buy the "Whole New Potatoes".

Since they are pretty much already cooked, you can throw em in a pan with some butter and garlic powder and oregano and cooked them covered on the grill for about 15 minutes.. they brown up real nice..

You could skewer them too, but in a pan is easier.

These make a good side dish for things like sausage and peppers on the grill, etc. etc..

438 Why, you might as well ask why people buy potatoes at all.If you belong to the dietary sect that sees potatoes as actual food, well then, potatoes in a bag or bin have a good shelf life, but they are sure as hell not permanent. Once you smell bad ones, you won't forget the smell.

So if you're shelf-stocking for long-term, you would not use "fresh" ones. The canned ones last for years and years.

The weirdest part, though, was the three weeks between operations, during which I had 20/20 vision in one eye and 20/2000 in the other. Really distorts your sense of perspective.

Horsecrotch. End of mission/service means clearance is no longer required. So it's revoked.

At a future date post service, if TPTB decide they need your assistance or consultation then clearance can be reinstated, IF you qualify.

Even my limited clearance worked like that. Unless something has drastically changed in the interim, that's still pertinent.
