Smile of the Week: A Liberal Anthropologist Goes Searching for "Trump Country"

Just start with the first tweet and keep on going.

Now, some of you might already know the twist here; I'm curious for the ones who don't know, when did you figure out the twist? It took me three or four of these entries, each increasingly unbelievable and Bias-Confirming, before I started to wonder about things.

Here Jesse Brenneman announces his mission, which is to heal the country by understanding Trump voters. Then he spazzes out about Hillary losing the election.

Here he comments on Trump Country radio, noting that all the stations are country, talk radio, and Christian, except those that aren't.

But that's just setting the table. His observations on dining habits in Trump Country are astonishing.

He is flabbergasted by yet another strange culinary sign that he's not in Kansas any more. (Actually he's in like Indiana.)

Further reports on the strange and wondrous signs and shibboleths of Trump Country.

He really gets it now.

While he grows weary in his travels, he is spurred onwards by the wokeness of a babe.

He reports on the strange folkways and superstitions of Trump Country.

Jesse Brennenman, whose entire odyssey is spent on highways and in highway rest-areas, draws some very dubious conclusions about the highly mobile lives of Trump Country people.

Once again, he's flummoxed by Trump County restaurants. This one might confuse Noted Outdoorsman and Working Man Jonah Goldberg, too.

Having earlier made the novel realization that there is not One America but, get this, Two Americas, he now just elevates beyond physical limits and decides that no, there are three Americas.

He is alarmed by the sight of strange rainbow-stripe flags in Trump Country, and wonders what perverse meaning they might have on these dark shores.

Trump Country is dangerous and it takes an intrepid reporter to dare the darkness.

I don't actually get this one, unless this is a big old Wink directed only at me (and most of you).

Finally, he looks at the bizarre media available in Trump Country, with DARK MYSTERIES OF POWER coded right into its front pages. Thanks to John Sexton of Hot Air.

Open Thread/Good Night!

Update: If you're not sure of his intent, check the tweet below.

Satire's hard. I fuck it up quite a bit. You have to walk a fine line. Subtle enough that it's funny - because the subtlety is the funny - but obvious enough that people get it.

Subtle, get this, is not in my wheelhouse.

Sarcasm I can do all day long - but not Satire. Satire is like a Golf Swing to me.

I got to see two drivers fight, which had us held over almost an hour while the cops sorted it out. I saw a young woman and kids helped out by an old guy that thought she might be short of funds. (Same guy checked with me as I wasn't eating at the restaurants.) I met some really nice folks in Wyoming. At one point, in Kansas, it was me, the driver and one other person on the bus. Busted my leg real bad on a jump when I was Young Ranger Sluggo in 2d Batt. After some surgery, I got a 30 convalescent leave. So I flew Space-A with USAF outta McChord to Wright-Pat. Some small executive type jet. USAF 1 star and some congress critter. Had a USAF Chief Master Sergeant also going Space-A. I was a runny-nosed PFC. Travelled in Class A's, jump boots and black beret, of course.

Got to Wright-Pat and the Chief MSgt took me to Dayton airport. All closed. So I ended up spending a few hrs at the Greyhound terminal. There was a station in my home town (ticket window and a bench by the curb), but I was in a leg cast and on crutches, so the driver detoured and dropped me at Mom's driveway.

185 Just one more thing: Most of the "observations" he makes about Trump Country are claims that they drive on highways all day, eat at highway rest stops, and are obsessed with stopping to get gas.

Of course, he himself is driving on the highway, eating at highway rest-stops, and stopping to get gas.

And this is his perception of "Trump Country." That is, he doesn't get that what he's seeing isn't representative of Trump Country, but of people driving long distances cross-state, and he doesn't get that the reason he's seeing these people is that he himself is looking for Trump Country ONLY on the interstates.

So what else would he see but cars, highways, and rest-stops and gas stations?

Film of course is about a communist exiled to the south during the Fascist period.

255 So CO is going CA, even WRT its "GOP"? Seems like it, at cursory glance. That one senator (Gardner) seems fairly useless, though he doesn't dine out on his uselessness, a la Flake McCain Corker Collins et al.

Just guessing, but I'd think CO is a place where a GOP that was worth anything, that stood for something, that offered a specific better alternative, would still have a shot at state-wide offices.

It seems to be universally the case that people fail to take account of how awful the CA GOP has been when trying to understand how a gigantic state like this is essentially a one-party state. It's not just the electorate changing, it's the GOP ceasing to be any sort of real alternative.

That's one of the problems a few were kicking around earlier.

You've got to go "over the top", with subtlety, for Satire - right ? Well ... how in the Hell do you go over-the-top with today's Liberals ? You can flat-ass SHOW THEM evidence to the contrary - and they just don't see it.

Pretty tough to Satire that - but I thought the guy did a nice job. Honestly surprised at the negative reaction by some here. He only made fun of himself. Can't see why that pisses people off.

Actually, libertarians pretty frequently are proponents of Big Judiciary as the priests of the Holy Writ of the Constitution, as not just a plan and agreement for the federal government among sovereign states--but as the liberal progressive seat of morality it has become.

And everywhere government has enlarged, it has done with first the expansion of the federal court's jurisdiction over the states. After all it was Chief Justice Taney that overturned the State of Illinois prerogative to make anti-slavery laws based on the theory that the founders had never intended black people to be citizens--and he was going to enforce that "intent".

He grabs 4 cigars. Ok, Gracie, half of mine is yours. And he gives her two cigars. And half of yours is mine, so he takes one back, leaving her with 1 and him with 3.

She says, wait a minute, let me try that. So she gets 4 cigars. And says, let's see, half of mine is yours, and gives George 2 cigars. An...and George interrupts quickly an days, and half of yours is mine, and grabs the other cigar in her hand.

However, operationally we have two problems:

1) It does not stand up when people actually want power over other people.

2) Right now, a better description of Libertarianism (or at least many of it's advocates) would be Libertineism.

It's a little different though, they are supposed to believe in the wisdom of the Doctrine of Incorporation. If anybody should suffer the judges eclipsing their power, it's the states that vote for and promote activists judges who brought us the Incorporation Doctrine--that ignores the actual provisions of enforcement of the 14th amendment cited in the 14th amendment and turns "rights" on its head.

In a hearing Monday, a New Mexico judge found that suspects in a bizarre child abuse case were not a danger to the public, and released them on bond.

Defense attorney blames Islamophobia

Two Muslim men and three women are charged with 11 counts of child abuse each after police raided their compound in New Mexico and discovered 11 malnourished children living in squalor.

Their lawyer argued that there was a double standard in the case because his clients were Muslims. He argued that if they had been Christian and white, "we might not be here today."

Despite law enforcement authorities saying that they believe that the children were being trained to attack innocents, and that the adults were radicalized, Judge Sarah Backus released the suspects.

479 The New Mexico case is getting a lot of airplay on the news in ATL, because the murdered kid was from there. Tonight they spent 5 min on the local news rehabilitating the grandfather's image (the imam, un-indicted co-conspirator in the 1st WTC bombing) "I am a patriot now, I just want to know what happened here!" For Fukcs sake they released these people?

Posted by: BunkerInTheBurbs, still needs a new Nic! at August 13, 2018 09:53 PM (x7rWu)

480 What if they were Christian and White....?!?!?!!?!?!?!?

AYFKMRN!!!!!!!

If they were Christian and White, and kidnapping children to perform school shootings, they'd have already been firebombed into smithereens by the FBI, and the still smoldering ashes piled together with crazy glue and tried before a military tribunal post mortem, and there would never, ever, ever be another "thing" in the news for as long as the English language is spoken on this planet. The Christian religion would be outlawed, and anything with the word "camp" in it not explicitly run by a P.O.C. would be shut down post haste.

"What if they were Christian"....

Fuck that.

Yet, tomorrow, we'll still get all the "Trust The Legal System" shit from all the usual suspects.

It doesn't piss me off anymore, or amaze me anymore, or really do much of anything to me anymore.

I just know - regardless of what some say - that if a Judge says "Here, wear this paper star and report to the camps" ... there's a segment of people that will wear the star and report to the camps. Because Authority said so.

And they'll expect me to do the same.

Honestly ... screw managing the decline. This shit-show can't end soon enough. There ain't no legal or political remedy to this kind of shit. We're too far down the rabbit hole.

Empty? That sir, is not empty.
There's cattle on grazing land on one side of the road and wheat growing on the other, from the looks of it.
That land is full.
You want empty? Go to New Mexico, or Utah.

503 133 Hey don't knock Greyhound until you've tried it! I had an epic trip once. Went from Portland OR, down through So CA, across and up to Tulsa OK. Back home on the northern route, through Kansas and Wyoming.

Hummm, "epic"
Mid 1980's - I took many Greyhound trips alone between two southern cities - it was uncomfortable and slow, but not scary - acceptable since I couldn't drive at the time.
2017: My husband took Greyhound on the same route - it was much different. The bus station staff, driver and riders were all - uh - lowest common denominator types - barely functional, barely competent, fights and lots of yelling/arguing on the bus. Very uncomfortable situation.
Let's just say that we have ruled out Greyhound as an acceptable transportation option. Maybe in rural areas it is better.

In most surveys I've seen, it is THE most popular fast food restaurant among African Americans, and I don't think we're considered the average Trump voter. It's really just white progressives who have this thing against CFA.

513 The first sign that a political party is out of touch with their
voters is when they have to hold seminars on how to speak
with people in "flyover country." To the people who hobnob
with billionaire donors, the common man might as well be
speaking a foreign language. The modern Democrat party
has taken it to such an extreme level they now hold the
American people in contempt. Obama's bitter clingers
and Hillary's deplorables should have taught them a
lesson but they are still clueless. They still do not know
why Hillary lost!
