For First Time In History, Democrats (Admit to Pollsters That They) View Socialism More Favorably Than Capitalism

I'm old enough to remember when saying that Democrats were socialists was officially racist, according to the Democrat Party communications operations and its partner, the Democrat/socialist media.

It was a "racial code-word," you see. A "dog whistle."

Now Democrats are proclaiming it themselves.

Does that make them racist?

Democrats More Positive About Socialism Than Capitalism
by Frank Newport

47% of Democrats view capitalism positively, down from 56% in 2016

57% of Democrats now view socialism positively, little changed from 2010

Republicans very positive about capitalism; 16% positive on socialism

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- For the first time in Gallup's measurement over the past decade, Democrats have a more positive image of socialism than they do of capitalism. Attitudes toward socialism among Democrats have not changed materially since 2010, with 57% today having a positive view. The major change among Democrats has been a less upbeat attitude toward capitalism, dropping to 47% positive this year -- lower than in any of the three previous measures.

I wasn't aware that Democrats has long admitted to a favorable impression of socialism, which is why I'm now particularly angry at the media denying it all these years when Democrats have expressed near-60% pro-socialist leanings since Barack Obama's first year in office.

The big change here is the 9% drop in Democrat support of capitalism.

Actually, I know it's not that simple. That's partly it, but the shift has been ongoing for a long time. And to that, the blame is squarely on the brainwashing from entertainment, media and the public education system, particularly higher ed.

You can afford the higher taxes (and afford to avoid them) easier, the higher costs aren't much of an issue to you, and the societal corruption is to places you don't go or care about. These people are stupid. The Venezuelans aren't starving because of socialism, it's because of evil American Exxon and white patriarchy, they think. This is how peasants think. Which sort of hints at the much deeper crisis here. That *any* hint of the behavior we have seen documented to have occurred as a regular thing would not result in a near-unanimous, bipartisan outrage and reaction, from the outset. Civic culture is pretty much collapsed, and probably most of the political class (and much of the rank/file govt. employee class) now simply has no American mindset or values, or sense of responsibility.

I love how if you want to get something analogous to 1M% inflation in physics, you basically need to go close to a black hole or shoot particles at each other at close to the speed of light, but to do it to this to an economy, all you have to do is put somebody in charge that thinks they're smarter than the public at managing their own money.

251 Question to Democrats regarding a positive view of socialism:

Why?

I mean, what has changed? If anything the failures of socialism and the success of capitalism is even more apparent than they were 10 years ago. Socialism failures have been seen all over the world, in rich and poor countries. If socialism worked, the most dynamic and growing countries on earth would be Venezuela, or Cuba, or North Korea. There is an almost perfect correlation between the degree of socialism practiced and disaster.

And to those who point to Denmark as a success I have only one response - we ain't Danes. That is to say, the fact that one country can kinda, sorta get some version of socialism to work doesn't mean it can or will work here.

264 Capitalism is simply a way for a society to determine what to do with scarce resources. It does this by having an auction for resources, carried on continuously every moment of every day. Socialism presumes that people, individuals, can decide this allocation process better than the auction. That individuals are smarter than the wisdom of crowds. That has been proven scientifically wrong for decades. No person, no matter how altruistic and intelligent, can make the number of decisions fast enough.

278 Come to think of it, the WP's Caribbean piracy article's hardest punch was delivered by the extensive collection of photographs of Trinidad-Tobago fishermen and people who were victims of the Venezuelan pirates. These are not sailors aboard yachts or galleons, but poor, barefoot people who make their living catching fish for the local markets. That Venezuelan thieves have to rob the poor to feed their own selves and families is significant evidence of what socialism has done to Venezuela.

335 One issue is that people don't really understand what they are talking about when they say "socialism." They think socialism is Sweden or something similar, but those are really just high-tax welfare states. When an actual socialist says "socialism" he means nationalization of the means of production; when the average lunkhead on the street says "socialism" he means free health care and a UBI. But the pollsters aren't going to explain that.

340 imo, the "opposite of socialism" is individual liberty.

Capitalism happens in socialist countries ... but with even heavier (less liberty) burdens placed on the seller and buyer.

Socialism in the ideal is largely what we in America call capitalism, in many ways. We have tax incentives for some things, we have trade sanctions on some people, we supply the needs of the poor (even illegals). Our socialism manages our markets, supports the 2Big2Fail/Jail ... not based on Capitalism (which would have let them fail) ... but based on socialism (TheSystem is more important than the individual investor).
SocialismR'US. imo "socialism versus capitalism" is full of false pretense. Wrong argument. Liberty means freedom to fail, not obligation of the masses to support the failures (especially not the billionaire failures).

Socialism: "a political and economic theory of social organization that
advocates that the means of production, distribution, and exchange
should be owned or regulated by the community as a whole."

Capitalism: "an economic and political system in which a country's trade and
industry are controlled by private owners for profit, rather than by the
state."

theory of social organization vs. system; owned or regulated vs. controlled for profit; community as a whole vs. state

We have regulation so theoretically we are all socialists now?
