No GAINZZZ Is Good GAINZZZ

That's false, of course.

I had an injury two months ago and took a week off to let it heal. Then I had a complicating factor called "lazyitus," and I took a couple of more weeks off. Then I was just out of the habit of working out so I just sort of did nothing.

Results: gained eleven pounds, but that's only half of it. I reverted to a lot of bad habits, like staying up late, getting hit with frequent insomnia, being Low Energy Jeb!, etc.

All the good I accomplished over a year or more was kind of wiped out in two months.

I used to have acid in my stomach at night. That went away when I got healthy.

But after two months of not being particularly active or healthy-- it came back. Because of course it did; why wouldn't it? When you revert to your old habits you're going to get your old ailments back.

I restarted my regime a week ago but I'm still not feeling great.

I guess the lesson is: Don't go off your routine. It's hard to establish a habit of being healthy and once you've established it, that's really helpful for continuing it.*

But once you start doing nothing, it's easy to continue doing nothing and it's hard to start doing something again. If you start being a slug again, then that is now your habit. And it'll take work to break that habit and start the new (good) habit again.

But that's my problem. How are your GAINZZZ? Please tell me about your GAINZZZ, because a bit of inspiration (and shaming) would be helpful.

* The way I put it is this way: The big Failure Point of any workout routine is, of course, simply deciding if you're going to work out or not. If you're making that decision each time you might or might not work out, you're going to fail, you're going to choose "nah," 50% of the time or more.

But once you have the habit of just doing it M-W-F or whatever, that decision point is largely gone. You're not deciding whether or not to do it; you just do it, because that's what the schedule says.

So eliminating that Failure Point by just getting into a schedule and treating the schedule as more-or-less inviolable removes all those many, many chances of failure.

Once you're not making the decision if you'll work out or do IF today, you just do it. The decision gets taken out of the decision loop.

Mostly. Obviously you're gonna have some really bad days where you just say "Eff it."

18 Until April 2015 (a couple of months before I turned 61) I was known to go on walks that stretched 10 mi through town and county. I broke my ankle in four places, ending up with a lot of titanium and, worst of all, laid up for quite a while. Now at 64, between that downtime and older age, and a colon resection last year (not to bad recovery - surgery was in January), it is tough to get back. 39 So gainzz time.

I'm in the summer of hell training for the fall race season. Running in Florida you have to be a vampire, only running when the sun is down. I've taken to doing my 17 mile maintenance runs overnight, starting at 1AM on Saturday night.

My coach started me on a regime of 400m repeats and worked me up to 20 of them during a session once a week. They are brutal, but I'm seeing big improvements. My goal is to set a personal record in November at the 10K distance, but I've already beaten my PR 3 times in training, once by almost a minute and half.

My next big race is Hood to Coast. It is a 200 mile relay from Timberline Lodge to Seaside Oregon.

41 Speaking of Jonah Goldberg, it used to rub me the wrong way when he referred to Trump (or some of Trumps' predecessors of The Wrong Sort) as "damaging the brand". But now I realize that was very wrong of me. He was in fact being entirely open and honest, admitting he's just a huckster shilling a product.

And I'm not at all surprised at his being Never Trump. The ones who puzzle me are Will (age, I'm guessing, as he's been slipping for some years), plus Nordlinger and French. I simply do not see how anyone who was for Cruz cannot grant that Trump has given us at least 90% of what we'd have hope for from Cruz. And a few (Klavan, Kimball) have seen it. I honestly cannot explain that sort's continuing Trump aversion, unless it's just (a) self-interest, or (b) being a pussy-boy.

45 Ace, I'm the last one who should be offering advice, given that the place where I exercise (my basement) has been under major renovation for the last couple months, but I will happily encourage you to get back on track.

With regard to your insomnia, a couple of thoughts. One, when you get back on track with your exercising, I'm sure your sleep will improve. But I would try to exercise as early in the day as you can. When my husband went through a period of exercising at night instead of at lunchtime, he couldn't sleep at all.

The second thing I would encourage you to do is to try taking tryptophan and melatonin, but take them earlier than they recommend. I think they tell you 30 minutes before you go to bed but I started taking it an hour and a half before bed and wow, what a difference.

I need to exercise, bcz I know that'll make the difference. Why I resist I don't know, bcz losing this routine I have built is only gonna end in sadness and tears. Mine.

52 Doing really good. Paleo diet, low glycemic carbs, if any. Steady two pound per month weight loss.

Within six pounds of goal. Five foot eleven, 179 pounds sounds kinda fit. Somewhere around 10-12% body fat. Waist around 45% of height. 43% is goal.

Not knocking myself out with exercise, just walking as often as possible. Kettlebells are good. Broken ribs are delaying improvements there.

Protip: Don't break a rib or two, or three, or five. Those mfers hurt like a summa bitch for months. They will make you want to walk though. Bout all you can do.

But at my peak I was trying 5-6 times per week (lift 3, martial arts 3), and man, it's just... Well, i couldn't do it. I'd cancel at least one and sometimes two planned workouts per week. The number of times I managed a 6 workout week, I could count on one hand.

79 Ace, on the 5 to 6 times a week thing, I can attest. I used biking for cross training, so my normal routine would be Tuesday-run, Wednesday-bike, Thursday-run, Friday-bike, Saturday-bike (if it is a short week), Sunday-long run (depending on the week 6 to 17 miles).

Once I amped up the training, I had to cut back on the bike. I needed the off day to recover. Otherwise I couldn't function at life and was in pain constantly. I still use the bike regularly, but I've cut back on my riding pace, and skip it if I feel soreness anywhere.

92 I was going to add the trick Ace mentioned above.

For starters, if I am wavering, I just make the decision and try not to think about it until it is time to go. So if I decide to workout at 6:00, then if I start thinking about it I find excuses not to.

Instead I make it automatic to just get up at 6:00 and start getting dressed. If I am wavering, I tell my self I will only go 1km and see how I feel. It makes it easier to commit to smaller goal until you get over the dread of facing 1 hour of workout, but once I go 1km, I always go all the way.

good advice.

#6 is important. Not just for waking up, but for insomnia or just not being able to fall asleep. Now when I can't fall asleep, I just stop trying and pick up my kindle and read.

One can't really "try" to sleep. Effort is mostly incompatible with falling asleep. So when you can't sleep, stop trying, and start reading (not a computer).

Soon you'll start feeling sleepy.

One trick i want to try but haven't is a kind of reverse psychology where I try to force my eyes open and force myself awake, to make my body fight it and get sleepy. I don't know if that would work.

110 My hubby and I started a strict plant-based diet nearly three years ago due to his high blood pressure. I wasn't going to make two dinners, so we did it as a family. Hubby and I dropped significant weight in the first few weeks and it just went from there. We feel great, look pretty dang good (I think) and I started fasting in the mornings several months ago and it's helped also. I don't eat until around noon-1-ish and I'm at the point where I really don't get hunger pangs until 1, sometimes 2. Hubby's blood pressure issues went away entirely. Not for everyone, but I feel like a different person, in a really awesome way.

maybe. But the other thing is, just having it there isn't turnig the doorknob or putting on your running shoes. To use the "just start" technique, you'd have to get dressed for a workout and then get on the thing.

148 I simply do not see how anyone who was for Cruz cannot grant that Trump
has given us at least 90% of what we'd have hope for from Cruz.
--
I was for Cruz, and I disagree- Trump has given us more.

I think Cruz would have been happy to fight with Democrats, but reluctant to fight with the Media at the same time, and would have avoided fighting with Republicans at any time. Trump is more accustomed to being in the spotlight, has the self-assurance that comes with being beholden to no one, and will take on anyone.

I still hope Cruz runs in 2024, but I've come around to thinking Trump has turned out to be what we needed in 2016.

156 I'm a lurker, but will chime in today. April 1st I took a picture of my fatass self and decided that was it. 225 soft pounds, and I used to be a 170 pound capable cyclist. Today I weighed in at 197. Hundreds of miles of mountain biking, much of it in the early morning before work, cut out a ton of soda and fast food, lean cuisines are my friends at work, no eating after 6 pm. My weight loss is offset by muscle gain, mostly in my legs, but I still call that winning.

163 Sorry about the delayed response. Yes -- add volume not weight, then start edging up your weight by week or month rather than session. The key is maintaining form, so you don't reinjure yourself, and the increased volume/intensity becomes more like cardio.

Also add in one of those "ab" wheels from a kneeling position -- great for warm ups and strengthening back and arms.

164 I typically work out six days a week, but it's light each day - total gym routine 3 days/week and elliptical the other 3. But I injured both wrists somehow (I blame the 2yo) a couple months ago, so I haven't been able to bear weight on them, so it's been just elliptical for me. I usually read during. (I've tried watching TV, but it can't keep my interest - if I'm reading, say, Dresden Files, I totally forget how long I've been going on the elliptical. TV, on the other hand, cannot distract me.)

One of the pain meds I took for the wrist injury caused me to gain weight, which I've been unable to lose thus far despite stopping the med (it also gave me constant low-grade nausea). I also fell off the sugar wagon recently. So I got back on that. It's hard. You have no idea how bad I want some sugar right now. But I want to fit into my favorite jeans and my favorite dresses even more, so that's my short-term motivation.

(My long-term motivation is that I want to have a good quality of life as long as possible...my grandma was a cautionary warning in this regard.)

174 As for insomnia, my recommended cure for that is having children. I always used to struggle to fall asleep, but since my eldest was born 7 years ago next week (!), it's lights out as soon as my head hits the pillow.

I'll be curious to see if I have trouble falling asleep again when the kids get old enough to be less draining. Right now, they drain everything I've got and then some. (The 2yo spent a hefty chunk of the day vomiting and is still having diarrhea. I'm ready to fall asleep right now.)

175 > I guess the lesson is: Don't go off your routine. It's hard to establish a habit of being healthy and once you've established it, that's really helpful for continuing it.*

180
* The way I put it is this way: The big Failure Point of any workout
routine is, of course, simply deciding if you're going to work out or
not. If you're making that decision each time you might or might not
work out, you're going to fail, you're going to choose "nah," 50% of the
time or more.

But once you have the habit of just doing it M-W-F or whatever, that
decision point is largely gone. You're not deciding whether or not to do
it; you just do it, because that's what the schedule says.
---
Its easy to get knocked off the track, but I disagree with this a bit. I started working out again in March of this year. I changed my whole routine to do so -- I am a night person by biology, but I made myself to get up at 5:00am to go to the gym. Every day, I ask myself if I will go or not, but while I work it out in my head, I get dressed for the gym. Many times that I would have stayed home, I just thought, eff it, I'm dressed already.

well I don't think I would reinjure myself. It's a two month old injury, and furthermore, I injured myself by throwing a very hard kick in martial arts, not in weight training.

I had been doing martial arts a lot more intensely and was really pushing the limits of kicking. Too much, it turned out.

The older you get Ace, I know you are only 29 but, the more important it is to cut out all the bells and whistles and distractions and get down to the most important aspects of good health - weight loss and muscle building. The machines and gimmicks are just that machines and gimmicks.

I've weaned myself off all the extraneous stuff and gotten down to business, because in the end, it's all about getting the best results in the shortest period of time.

Intermittent fasting and isometric exercises are the keys.

I really like the results of fasting (holistically-and all the health benefits it produces) and am attempting to get back into it on a more regular basis along with more just using my own body weight anywhere, anytime.

I hold my arms up, like a NFL field goal signal, for 1 minute, then two minutes, onto the third minute and I'm exhausted. Then I start again. Deep twitchy muscle development is key. Holding a pose gets you more bang for you buck.

Don't discount how much energy and strength it takes to uphold your own body. In fact, it's enlightening how important it is to hold your own.

Or, put another way, the 452nd reason to finally really become dead serious about core strength.

But did swim this morning (just under my usual 2K meters) and played hockey (with all 3 chronic pain issues acting up, plus the bruise/edema from a blocked shot 5 effing weeks ago getting sore 30 minutes in, I guess from the skate being tight).

Started out with I think the Royal Canadian Airforce exercises, and moved on to weights, and basic floor exercising, like push ups and sit ups. I have been doing some form of exercising ever since, maybe five days a week. Always weights, and using en elliptical some days and an exercise bike others. Enough to keep me toned. I made it a habit, and I find I have to do my routines at the end of the day to relax. I just know I feel like crap if I can't get moving. Doing everything at home helps because I don't have to go anywhere and waste more time. Best of luck, Ace. You will get back to your plan and you will feel a whole lot better!

224 I have been a lurker for a while. Commented on Gainzz threads a year or so ago. I went from 300 lb in 2014 to maintaining < 210lb since 2016. It really goes with diet more than anything. Exercise is good for overall physical and mental health, but diet is key. I have found bouncing between keto and carnivore have been the most successful for me.

230 What I want more than anything else is for the kids to get older and more independent. Right now, my day is get up early, get ready for work, get the kids up and ready for school/daycare, drop them off, go to work, spend all day in meetings, pick the kids up, go home, make them dinner, give them baths, etc., and crash into bed about 15 minutes after they go to bed. I MAKE time for half an hour of exercise in there, but I've got nothing left in my tank.

I really hate when people say "you will miss these days". I can't imagine missing having zero privacy, never being able to eat a meal uninterrupted, changing diapers (especially the ones with diarrhea in them), cleaning up barf, etc.

Well, I haven't exercised today, so I might as well get up and get moving. I'm actually already in my PJs, but that can be corrected.

238 somehow in the last three months I lost about 15 pounds ... old jeans were too tight for several years, got them back out and now almost too loose. Drilled two more holes in the belt.

Partly I work outside more, but I also listened to that advice on eating within a six (or eight) hour window. Easy for me to go to early afternoon with only coffee, barely hungry ... and I try to cut back on eating big after eight, which is when I feel most hungry.
So thanks for that advice ... I think it was Ace that brought that up.

I bought a recumbent fat tire trike to get myself more exercise, but it got a flat and sat for over a year. But I do need to do the cardio thing more ... though little work projects around a farm make me sweat a few times a day ... that is probably a key for losing a little. Have projects or a sport that is fun, instead of a grind exercise program that is a chore.

I've got the acid problem as well ... take the purple pill on occasion (Nexium, there are a couple others in the class ... Prevacid) or a generic Pepcid, if I'm going to drink beer. But losing that gut weight will probably help that a lot.
cheers, good luck losing more and feeling better

1) Isometric exercises + plus an occasional walk

Another key is to get your work out in by NOT working out.

You need to figure out cheating routines.

257 Meh, you're looking at it wrong.

I had a good friend for several years after college, co-worker, we lived together, (no not like that IYKWIMAATYD NNTAWWT)

He was a health freak, vegan (gawd did both his food and his flatulence stink), super exerciser (bicycling & others) , yet was always complaining about this ailment or that, the quality of his sleep (he sleepwalked - or hallucinated). He was like a highly tuned, sensitive Ferrari, which got all needy if you changed the octane of the fuel you gave it slightly.

Now, me, on the other hand I compared myself to a beater V8, maybe not running on all cylinders, but what the hell, ya got another 5 or 6 left, it'll get you there, and you could pump any fuel you wanted into it as long as it would burn (Jack Daniels, cigarettes, and Rolaids in my case). And you didn't have these wild swings in performance when you fell off that peak of tuning, you just chugged along regardless.

A lot less to complain about, and you could pend som'a that extra time you would have chasing pussy.

I assume the administration has thoroughly gamed out all the options and scenarios with Turkey. Because it seems a divorce of sorts is unfolding. I further assume the SOFA with Turkey will rule out any serious shenanigans WRT arresting US military personnel.

With Turkey, as with all the other NATO allies save for those in New Europe, their value to the US is 98.9% merely access to bases on their soil. Geography, that's about it.

I'm a freak of nature and my body needs 100 grams of protein a day to maintain my muscle mass. I had a muscle density test done and I have twice the highest ever recorded muscle density.

I'm 63 now. My weight hasn't changed, but the composition of my weight changed. My bad knee is not so bad anymore, although my good knee is getting a little cranky.
I have ups and downs.
If I haven't lifted in over a week, I re-set at 90% of the weight I was lifting and start over.
If it's over 2 weeks I start over at 80%. Etc.
Funny thing, though, is when I first started getting into heavy weights (for me, 295 lb squats) my body and my mind were forging ahead with me.
At that point I had to do a big re-set, I think it was the flu that stopped me. But, when I started nearing the heavy weights again, my body and mind were fighting it. It was harder, physically; and I was kind of afraid of it - I didn't have the 'I can do it' mindset.
Now, I'm at another re-set phase. My knees are complaining, but I'm going for it. See how it goes.

I haven't read all the comments, but you got it, just get to it.

4/18/17 i was 347, I weighed myself last month and was 204. You were one of my primary inspirations for getting off my ass and doing that - if you needed any motivation.

310 "228 I still hope Cruz runs in 2024, but I've come around to thinking Trump has turned out to be what we needed in 2016.
Posted by: rosignol "

Oh, brother! Hang on Trump has only just begun. You have to disable the bombs, secure the area, and lay the foundation before the real 'visible' work can get done.

Cruz is still suspect, but we need the Senate seat, he will be re-elected (not because of Cruz but in spite of him).

He will never, ever be president - because he's ineligible for starters and because he is a CFR member and a quisling.

Mark my words, and I was a very early Trump supporter and a Reagan fanatic, Cruz is not the person you think he is and will never be more than a tool for Trump to keep hold of the Senate.

The Mob Museum is definitely worth it. Also check out the Atomic Testing Museum and ask PoliticalHat if he will give you a tour. We had a great time there ask WDS or atomicplaygirl amongst others.

313 And one last point about Trump, you all are in for spectacularly wonderful things to occur.

Hang on to your hat, things have improved but you ain't seen nothing yet!

The man isn't stupid and he doesn't mess around. He's a long term planner, plotter and is willing to take the hits short term for long term gains. In fact, it should scare the shit out of his enemies because he is remarkably patient. He doesn't lose or give up EVER.

Reagan, as good of a man and an a stellar American as he was (still love the man), never had F' you money and had to deal with the Cold War, will seem like a small president when compared to what Trump will finally produce.

I laugh everyday and am of good cheer with Trump playing the fools for fools. He just makes me laugh.

Great things coming!!!

315 So I don't really like working out much - it feels like it's time/energy to a non productive purpose (as opposed to gardening for example). I used to love yoga but one studio closed, it's sister has shit parking where unless you show up super early you're hoofing it like 7 blocks in downtown traffic to get there on time (did that in pouring rain once, was awful).

I really was into yoga for a while - so much so, I actually did a hot power vinyasa class twice in one day. I have multiple injuries (broken leg, broken shoulder), and yoga really helped me be more flexible and feel good. I missed it (still do).

The yoga places closer to me I've looked at play music. LOUD, so it's often hard to hear the instructors, so I am not as motivated to go as with my old studio

But I need exercise, (I'm not going to be 29 forever), so I've been trying to walk the neighbourhood when I'm not too sore from moving a large truckload of boxes into storage in 90 degree temps.

The biggest thing that helps me, since the weather makes the moving and then the exercise erratic...? If I actually PUT my clothes on I exercise. Every time. So if I don't think about it so I can talk myself out of it, lay the clothes out earlier in the day or the night before, then autopilot putting them on, I feel a compulsion to exercise.

As for the Atomic Testing Museum, I LOVED it, but if you look at my nic then you see why. They had a lot of cool stuff, more than I expected and fun gifts too! Highly recommended.
For the Neon Museum, go at night, when they light up some of the signs, (you have to buy the tickets in advance). Some of the signs are not only iconic but ENORMOUS! Missed the fact we didn't have GNAMM this year because I would have loved to go back to both those places.

Have a great trip, Cosmic Charlie =)

316 I'm on track to make my annual bicycling goal of 230 miles. (I used to work with guys who could do that in a weekend. "Where are you going biking this weekend?" "Iowa." "Where in Iowa?" "Most of it.")

It's getting harder to hold up that M1917. I shot prone today for the first time in 8-9 months, and I'm happy with the score but boy did it hurt the upper body.

Posted by: gp at August 10, 2018 09:24 PM (mk9aG)

317 Since I have lost 15 pounds and many inches my acid reflux at night is almost gone. Not sure if it is the weight loss, the reduction in calories each day, the consistent exercise, or all three combined but it is a very nice benefit.

I have biked 1250 miles since April and hope to get in 400 miles by end of September. And that doesn't count the stationary bike riding I did during the rainy weeks in June and July.

Still, if I slack off, I start to gain the weight back. It is crazy how easy it is to put on 5 pounds.

It is not easy to drop weight after a certain age but if you make the effort you can do it.

Posted by: WarEagle82 at August 10, 2018 09:31 PM (xUc0d)

318 Well, I don't want to get on the scale. I am fearful to discover that I've transgressed 200 lbs - which is quite plausible. At 5'11'' that sure ain't great.

Anyway, I hope to get back into the basic fasting techniques you outlined.

319 Ace, I hope you do take the vacation. I have found that the key to a successful vacation (one that leaves you relaxed and refreshed) is to go somewhere / do something which forces you out of your mental "grooves." A week or two on your own in the French countryside (not in Paris, where everyone speaks English), maybe bicycling between different Bed and Breakfasts each day. Or perhaps an African safari or a week in London packed full of theater and after-hours music clubs. Get out there, dude. Come back with a new batch of stories to tell!

Posted by: VA MKZ at August 10, 2018 10:44 PM (UGO8J)

320 Go recharge your batteries, Ace! It's hard to focus on taking care of yourself when you're drained.
I used to have acid reflux until I cut out black pepper (also avoid raw onions.) Now if I know I'll be eating spicy food, I take a zantac beforehand.
Tryptophan gets me sleepy, and theanine helps if I wake up and can't stop thinking about things.

Use blue light filters on your electronic devices for nighttime if you're not already. I could tell an immediate difference late one night when I switched from my laptop (with f.lux) to my work one without the filter - the sleepiness vanished instantly.
What everyone else said - don't ask yourself if you're going to work out, focus on the feeling good part later. Maybe try a lower intensity sport like cycling or swimming, where you can still push it, but can also shift into lower gear.

321 Started working out in December 2017. Gym pretty much 5 days a week. 30 to 60 minutes cardio, then various weight machines. Lost about 50 pounds. Have stalled out as I took time a few months ago to buy a new place and move in. Have been doing the gym maybe once or twice a week now. That said, have been walking and biking a lot more than I ever did, so I want to believe there is some balance there. Have been the same weight for a couple of months now, even when not really working out. At least it seems to be stable. Am just working now to leave behind a corpse that will not make whomever has to pick it up say "Aw shit, a fat guy. I hate those." I may be filled with despair, but at least I'm considerate.

322 Can I share that I fell off the GAINZZZ wagon too and wiped out all my hard work, but I'm back at it again. A couple of weeks ago I had to be pushed around a museum in a wheelchair because I'd cracked a bone in my foot and even with a walking cast I was in too much pain to continue. I saw myself in a window and realized if I didn't lose weight, I'd spend my life in a wheelchair because my knees wouldn't be able to take it any more. I'd be dependent on others. I'd lose the independence I prize so greatly. So I started working on losing again. It's the 10th? 15th? 20th? time I've tried, but I went to the doctor and got a recommendation for a counselor who specializes in eating addictions. Praying this time is the last time I have to work so hard to lose the extra 100+ pounds I'm carrying around everyday.

323 Hey Ace (if you're still reading this far down). Had the exact same situation with a rotator cuff injury last year. A month in a sling after surgery, which I took as an "excuse" to do nothing at all exercise-wise (even though there were still plenty of things I could have done) ..and then that month turned into two ("still recuperating"), the travel for two months and all last three years' worth of gains wiped out. Main point that I think you'll benefit from hearing, is, tho: THE GAINZ WILL COME BACK FASTER NOW than they did when you first started from zero. It's like a learning a foreign language ... you forget a bit when you're not doing it everyday, and you think that you've lost that skill permanently. But then you go over to that country and start speaking again and you're amazed how fast it comes back. So GET TO IT ACE --- we NEED the Gainzzz Thread each week!

326 I find that when I stop working out for a while whatever reason (like being sick, or being in a small camper with a large old dog in bad weather), I just have to start back. I start back slow, but I get better.

You just have to always start back.

Posted by: alana at August 11, 2018 02:42 AM (jR3Be)

327 P.S. Rotator cuff injury above is right: You DON'T start out at zero. You have muscle memory and you have more muscles than you think.

If you remember how you were when you first started out, and how fast you progressed, you may see that you actually progress faster now.

330 When I get a good routine going, I take no days off. Days off will occur on their own because of life events. It's like bowling, you have a good game going, you miss an easy spare, then the next throw, you get the splits, now your good game is gone and it's downward spiral time. Never take a day off. You will still experience days off, but let outside factors control that.

332 I hear ya. My weight crept up past the point of 'no return" so I scheduled a long walk each morning or most. Had eye surgery so no vigorous exercise. Tracked my food intake (www.fitday.com is your friend). couldn't work out, and couldn't run, and discovered elliptical. (Guess what, no more knee pain, discovered how much fat was in my 'go to" foods tried less punishing/strenuous workouts so no more injuries) I'm down five pounds with another 10 to go. Progress is extremely slow but steady and I have daily weigh ins with scales that measure to .1 of a pound increments. I'm experimenting with timing meals and triggers now. I put the scale at the entrance to my kitchen. And this sounds dopey but I have a kitchen timer that dings every 14 mintutes, so I can getup and move around instead of sitting for 5 hours straight. Seems to help.

333 In order to stay motivated, THINK SMALLER.

Don't think "OK, I really need to do a workout routine so I'm going to work out now."

Think more along the lines of "OK I am going to take off my street clothes now. OK now I am going to put on my workout clothes and shoes. Now I am just going to do some bodyweight squat reps. Now I am going to do warmup reps. OK now I am going to do my squats. Now I will warm up with OHP light reps. Now I will do my OHP workout reps."

And on and on. Before you know it you are limber, you've got a bit of pump going, maybe even a few endorphins starting to circulate, and you are rolling. Now hold on to that good physical and emotional feeling for the next time you need to get started.

But the point is just focus only on what is immediately in front of you and before you know it you will have done what you know you need to do.

334 A little over two years ago, I stepped on the scale and found that I weighed 205. That was near the low end of what I had weighed from 1986 to 2016. Sweet! In 2010, I peaked at about 235, but didn't do much other than grab fewer handfuls of cheezy poofs and candy for the next six years.

Serendipitously, on the afternoon of my misstep onto the scale, I read about GAINZZZ. How simple -- just do every day what I do before my annualish physical -- and walk occasionally. So I GAINZZZed lost another twenty pounds.

185 -- wheee!

This summer I saw 195 on the scale.

I cut back on cheezy poofs again and just now weighed in at 186.

Life is good.

335 Serious, this is important info: Eating lower carb will often cure acid stomach. Happens for my husband and I every time. Cure in the sense that you won't have the problem on the days that you eat right. Not cure in the sense that you'll have bad heartburn pretty quickly after a day or two of high carb eating. Low carb internet communities have discovered the same correlation so it's not just two data points. Greater energy and mental clarity are also frequent benefits of lower carb eating. It's really distressing to me that AFAIK doctors aren't suggesting this change in diet to their patients with a lot of heartburn and GERD. My mother suffered horribly with GERD during the last few years of her life before she died 20 years ago of a sudden heart attack at age 59. We had no idea that her inexorable abdominal weight gain and reflux were being induced by her "healthy" low fat diet. She just kept cutting back on fat and eating more carbs of course because they were "healthy" and she craved them---never realizing that the fact that she craved pasta and potatoes was related to the fact that she (and the rest of the family who have cardiovascular problems) had metabolic syndrome. I'm so lucky to understand this connection now before it's hopefully not too late. It is freakin' hard to follow consistently though. Never give up!

336 Saturday morning, and I finally slept through the night without needing to eat at 3 AM in order to get any shut eye at all.

So, I slept through the night, got 8 hours sleep, and was able to do my IF of 16 hours. It is a relief to be back to my routine.

A big part of me thinks it was this thread...that the info took hold in my subconscious...and that made all the difference.

337 Injuries are the devil. I had a stress fracture in my ankle (not recognized, at first, so that slowed my healing). By the time the ankle was better, the opposite knee was aching and tender. I had to rest that for a few weeks.

Even after - yeah, lazyitis, and bad eating. I'm the worst weight and fitness I've been in years.

I started introducing some positive steps this week - eating more protein, moving more (and, I bought a new Fitbit to replace the one I've misplaced), and forgoing the mindless eating.

I also set up my ham radio, and worked on it for a few hours. Since it's in the attic, that's a few times up and down the stairs, which is also good.

338 Thanks for the nice words from the people in grey boxes. I pretty much just lurk here, but it's my favorite spot on the internet.

oilfield @ 322. I'm an engineer not a doctor, so take this for what it is worth, if you are serious I would start w/ 2 things. First, HFLC, Keto or whatever you want to call it. Basic math to start is that you want an 80/20 split on calories, w/ the 80 from fat. No carbs - not achievable - so carb limited to 20-30 grams and almost no fast carbs. To most, this will make you feel like shit for the first week or so, that's really carb withdrawal. But once you get on the split you will start to lose weight w/o trying and you will find that you're only hungry when you're actually hungry. Second, fiber, lots of fiber, 50-60 grams /day, you'll need a supplement to get there (I use walmart benefiber, or whatever is available when I travel).

Now, again PE, not dr, I always caution people - do NOT cheat. Not b/c of the whole you'll lose ketosis for a day, but there has been proven to be a more fundamental transformation in how your body deals w/ cholesterol - in simple terms, my doc when she was last reviewing my cholesterol w/ me said your bad cholesterol is 2 points below the minimum, so for the vegetarians I have recommendations on what they should eat when it's that low, but you put lard on your meat for calories, so that number's ok - insulin spikes will change how your body is dealing w/ cholesterol, tending to make it stick, so I think that cheating presents a more fundamental risk - in that it's probably bad to eat a lot of cholesterol (you'll end up having to do this) and do anything that would make it stick. No data, just supposition on my part, but the insulin mechanics are true.

Both of those are almost no work ways to start losing weight. Once you start to get those benefits, it becomes much easier to say, I'll go for IF (almost happens naturally), or I'm going to start to do some exercise. I'll check in if you have any questions.

339 @306 that is badass! Well done sir.

Assembling a home gym has been life changing for me. Nothing fancy just a squat rack, barbell, plates and horse mats.

My biggest problem is that I do a far amount of out of state service work. Long days in remote locations make slacking off too easy. Frequent resets are keeping me from hitting my goals but i am still much healthier than before the home gym.
