The Tower of Babel: Just a Bible Story?

At what point does the fact that unconnected cultures all over the ancient world have very similar legends argue for them being based upon a common real-life event?

Proto-Terminator?

A sixth-century Lombard warrior buried in northern Italy appears to have worn a prosthetic weapon. A knife and buckle were discovered along with evidence that his forearm had been amputated. The stump was positioned across his chest and researchers identified a callus and bone spurs consistent with pressure from a prosthetic device.

22 Baby Sister Update (Really!)

Received the nicest email today from Joyce's dear friend Lynne P:

"Lisa & I rode the Lebanon Hills trails yesterday. The same beautiful horse trails Joyce would often ride. It was a gorgeous day and we felt Joyce with us. In honor of her, I wore her infamous MissMe jeans... the jeans she gave me when I visited in November. I know if Joyce could speak she would make a comment about me wearing her jeans... and that's what gives me smile on these days when my heart is so heavy.

We are missing Joyce. We hope she is riding heaven's trails and smiling down on us! We will never forget her and all that she has given us!

We hope you and your family are well and enjoying your summer. I just wanted to reach out and tell you that we are still thinking about Joyce and her family & friends.

Take care.

PS Lisa and I designed this shirt (Life is a Beautiful Ride) in honor of Joyce. May she continue to touch people's lives."

Got the pickup box off it, so there's that. Now I have a rolling chassis with no cab, box, engine, or transmission in it. Next step: unbolt the rear axle from the springs, remove the fuel tank, and make 4 torch cuts to the frame rails to bust it into 3 pieces than I can load into the pickup with little trouble.

Now enjoying a nice Caesar.

106 22 Baby Sister Update (Really!)

"Cultural Marxism" in modern usage refers to a conspiracy theory which sees the Frankfurt School as part of an ongoing movement to take over and destroy Western culture.

Well, it is. I am not a conspiracy theorist and I don't imagine there is a dark-paneled room full of club furniture and plotting post-modernists - but they wanted to destroy western culture and remake it in Marxist terms. So do their descendants. It isn't a conspiracy theory - it is a philosophical *goal.*

Monte Cook makes great roleplay mechanics, but his view of roleplay morality is hot garbage.

I've rarely seen people do a good job portraying chaotic evil. Everyone thinks it's just being the Joker, crazy murder goblin, look at how nutty and evil I am. But "Chaotic" in a DD sense doesn't mean I do things randomly, it just means having zero respect for or deference to codes of law, social norms, etc.

Chaotic Neutral is tough to do. You're basically an anarchist - the big problem is, can you keep your word? Because as a member of a party, you should.

I don't see a huge problem with Chaotic Good. I'll agree people misuse it - people call Batman CG when he's pretty clearly lawful. I've seen people use it to play 'shades of gray' anti-heroes which isn't quite right, either - you're still capital g Good.

technically also true of Neutral Evil, though - your main character
traits are being uncaring, immoral and selfish. Lawful Evil, like you

Hah, same here.

Yeah, Grazz't is definitely the most devil-like demon, but compare him to, say, Asmodeus, and Grazz't comes out looking like a child. Grazz't has all his webs of intrigue but he's too impulsive to play a successful waiting game - no way would Asmodeus ever get himself trapped on the material plane just because he went off the doink some sorceress.

Lolth is also different, a lot of which I think comes from her once being good and also from being a legit capital G Goddess on top of being a demon lord.

The dream is over and I suspect the Internet is lost unless the tech monopolies get broken up. I think there is a good argument to be made that this represents obvious and illegal industrial collusion, but who knows.

Microsoft Azure is going after gab.ai now. InfoWars is the test and I suspect they open a wide front more or less immediately before calming down after November if they win. If they lose, they'll open up the other barrel and who knows what that entails.

280 A point I half assed made earlier in the week, which applies to the ICE agent threat post below.

The Antifa and leftist hectoring for going out into the streets to physically assault Trump supporters is going to hit a brick wall once someone tries to do it in a stand your ground state against a CCW holder.

Antifa will attack with fists or bike locks. Victim will pull his gun and kill the attacker. Police will look at the scene and conclude the killing is justified and no charges will be filed.

The one thing that people should have learned from Treyvon Martin is that if you enter into a physical confrontation with someone who is armed, all bets are off. The person with the gun CAN kill you, and will NOT serve a minute of jail time.

------------------

Depends on the Joker in question. For instance, the Jack Nicholas Joker just seemed to like to kill people in creative ways. The Heath Ledger Joker, on the other hand, was essentially the human equivalent of a force of nature.

The big scheme for the Joker in Burton's film was to give out a lot of money, and then gas everyone who collected the money. The big scheme for the Joker in Nolan's film was to try and show that when pushed, everyone is a savage.

Not sure if they'd have recourse to sue - I'm sure there's something nebulous enough in their hosting agreement that MS can just throw enough money at the problem to make it go away. I think they should look into non-US hosting, or just get a dedicated server instead of using cloud services.

A system like gab does not run on just "a" server. There are hundreds, or thousands involved, they are no doubt using cloud services like CDNs, etc.

If gab.ai decided, hey, today I am just going to migrate to my "own" servers - well, they would have huge capital outlays and have to hire a bunch of staff and then have to undergo the migration.

I get the feeling that gab.ai isn't awash in cash as it is.

Won't argue with that. But the difference as I see it is that the Burton Joker was doing everything himself. The goal of the Nolan Joker was to get everyone else doing it too. The latter is exemplified in the ships scene in which he tries to set up a "murder the others or let them murder you" situation. The Burton Joker would have just bombed both ships.

A surprising amount of it has moved off-premise. The selling point is, "sure you could built it yourself but we're robust and reliable and have *really* good engineers and so we can do a better job than you can at the price point, even though the unit cost is higher than running your own servers."
It is true to a point, but once you get to the large side of "medium sized business" it stops making so much sense because you can afford to have a solid IT team. But inertia is a bitch and salesmen are generally quite good.

Sure. How many servers? How much bandwidth? What was your failover? All of those other things. What you do for a small biz is not something that a multimillion user platform is going to run on.

For very large systems I would run them in my own data centers on my own hardware. Economy of scale works that way. But that is HUGELY capital intensive. You aren't going to start a web platform by building a datacenter.

387 Sure.

Dude, I have no idea why you are so heavily invested in the idea that a Gab.ai could not possibly, perish even the thought, host themselves.

My example was one of but a small guy hosting sites for clients up to 18 years ago. Take it for what it is worth. The scale was implied.

Another round of funding and they would be set. Seems like under your view, even Goolag, Mr. Softy and Amazon fail, because who is out there to give them an outside cloud? Nomesain?

397 @379 Hickman's Dragonlance / Krynn world had Fizban, who served a similar deus-ex-machina purpose. But he was actually literally *spoiler*. And canny DMs knew to use Fizban's roger-rabbit superpowers mainly as comic relief.
-----------------

And the writers used him in the same way - as comic relief. He did important things, but generally in the most incompetent way imaginable. For instance, there was the time he blew himself up using a fireball spell to open the lock of a large cage - while he was inside of it. There are occasional moments of lucidity where there are hints that he's a lot more important than he lets on (such as his conversation with Silvara). But by and large, he comes across as an incompetent dolt.

He reappeared in the Death Gate books (with the cleverly disguised name of 'Zifnab'), but he wasn't as much fun there. And he really was insane in that series (late in the series, it's revealed that his mind had broken in the distant past for reasons that are explained in the books).

ZIONSVILLE (WTHR) - A peaceful evening watching TV at home ended with a 70-year-old woman attacked by an intruder.

The attack happened Monday near Oak Street and Sotuh CR 300 East in Zionsville.

According to our partners at the Lebanon Reporter, the woman heard a crash outside, then moments later, a stranger burst through her front door.

38-year-old Steven Parker allegedly grabbed the woman, took her cell phone and called 911.

Parker told police he was on a three-day meth bender and wrecked his Jeep while driving away from four men who were trying to kill him. Officers surrounded the home with their guns drawn and arrested Parker.

The woman had some bruises, but will be OK. Her husband slept through the whole ordeal.

444 So, why does the West hate itself? Because anything that hinders or denies human reason and the human will must be destroyed. The biggest hindrance is the West's past, its root: Christianity. Western self-abhorrence is hatred of what stands in the way of a "better" future.

Voluntarism values strength and hates weakness. Materialism values reason and hates faith. Both engender hatred, which is the first step towards self-annihilation.

========

He's bringing in some relevant concepts here, but I'm not crazy about how he's putting this. I prefer Francis Schaeffer, who said that after Hegel, we passed below the line of despair. It kind of dehumanized humanity, like Darwin or Freud. We're just animals our values were illusions and religious hopes were placeholders for scientific knowledge, which end in the heat death of the universe anyway. It not so much caused self hatred because our past was inconvenient, but because our reasoning had ended up causing despair. I don't seriously think Nietzsche believed in a "better" future.

So the brilliance of western civilization introduced a kind of background nihilism into our minds, that's why people hate it. That's why leftists are in love with third world cultures. They can vicariously enjoy primitivism by looking at people devoid of angst because they are mentally incapable of doing so, the same as people enjoy having pets because pets live "in the moment" and lack self consciousness. This is why leftists have no qualms about destroying our civilization. It has nothing of joy for them. Read Sartre's Nausea - it expresses the mood perfectly.

I'm also reminded of Ludwig Bultmann, famous early 20th century Lutheran scholar. This is who the Europeans looked to for spiritual leadership:

It is impossible to use electric light and the wireless and to avail ourselves of modern medical and surgical discoveries, and at the same time to believe in the New Testament world of spirits and miracles.

So, bottom line, knowledge of causality (to a certain point) causes some people like Nietzsche, Bultmann or Sartre to feel despair by linking science to nihilism. These influential people infected all of Europe with this despair, which is why Europe hates itself and wants to destroy itself by importing exotic animals from the middle east to take their minds off of their existential disgust.

445 Star of the Guardians, by Margaret Weis.
Posted by: junior at August 10, 2018 12:28 AM (mTjez)

It was an interesting idea. A enlightened, beneficent, but corrupt monarchy is overthrown by a 'democracy' in a bloody revolution. The democracy quickly turns corrupt and then there is a movement to restore the monarchy.

It was also pretty much a rip off of star wars and Plato's republic. The Monarchy was supported by 'Guardians', genetically engineered and bred humans whose abilities border on Jedi. They have laser swords (which will kill any human who is not of that altered bloodline with a cancer like disease.) The title comes from the Jewel all Guardians wore around their neck to symbolize their 'office'.

It was a good idea that kind of went downhill pretty quickly after the first book.

A grandmother in Houston shot a man who was masturbating while riding his bike, KPRC reported.

"Initially investigation determined that the male was riding the street on a bicycle masturbating," Houston police told KPRC.

The woman was taking out her trash when she saw him.

"She told him stay away and not come in the house or she would get a gun and shoot him," Lt. Larry Crowson said.

As the man attempted to enter her home, she got a gun, fired a shot that went through the door and into the man's chest.

Police say the man was arrested last week for running around naked in that same area of Houston.

His condition is unknown.

The official story is that the driver didn't even know he was funneling information to Chinese intelligence. He thought he was just telling an old friend about what was going on.

But regardless of the truth of that, DiFi has apparently been cozy with the Chinese since back even before she was a Senator. There's a part of me that wonders if this is only coming out now because a lot of Dems here in California have been trying to get rid of her. 493 Just some late nite idle thoughts to share with the horde...

In earlier threads today, it has been suggested that conservatives need to form their own platforms that are completely independent of the leftist run monopolies that rule the Internet at this time. However, was also pointed out that the monopolies can rather easily stomp out any up-starts.

The thing is, that an entirely independent Internet could be created, relatively easily, that exists alongside the existing Internet, but free from leftist interference. This would be done be creating a completely independent Domain Name System (DNS) system. At the core of the Internet, "all" systems currently agree to use a single, global database that converts a domain name such as "ace.mu.nu" or "www.google.com" to a set of IP numbers that actually locate the content on the Internet. The DNS system is essentially a single electronic phone book that maps names to numbers. It just so happens that everyone around the globe uses the same phonebook, but there is no technical limitation to simply creating a new phone book -- one maps a different set of names to their existing numbers. The end-users would just need to the their browsers and other devices to use the alternate DNS system or phonebook.

Starting with an alternate DNS system, right-leaning sites could begin building alternate Internet services that over time replace leftist dominated Internet services. In some ways, it would be like winding the clock back to 1997 or so, but the primary advantage would be that all the technical advancements and present-day infrastructure could be fully leveraged.

It could be argued that such efforts to create a new independent DNS system would Balkanize the Internet, but it would be conservatives and libertarians creating lemonade from the lemons they were given. It would also provide a level playing field for new Internet services to be developed that are completely independent of the monopolies of the current Internet.

The biggest hurdles I see would be as follows.

First, could a governing body be created for the new DNS services that wouldn't be ultimately be corrupted and undermined? What would such a governing body look like and how would it be managed? How would the system be policed to ensure that a new generation of Googles, Facebooks, and Twitters don't come to dominate?

Second, how would people and services be convinced to switch to an alternate Internet controlled by a different global DNS system? With few users, there would be little incentive for services to be created for those users. However, few users is kind of a hidden blessing as it would return us to the days of hosting many sites relatively few servers so that expense is minimized and services can again grow organically with as the community grows.

Third, browsers, email programs and anything that uses the Internet would need to support using an independent DNS system. By and large, this is already handled by all the major platforms such as Windows, Mac and Linux by the name service settings in the OS, but it would be a bit of a hassle for users to easily switching between the current DNS servers and alternate DNS servers in a transparent manner. Not a huge issue, but one that would need to be addressed.

What do others think? What other issues am I missing? Ready to rewind the clock back to 1997 and restart the Internet again?

I'm not surprised. Multiple root DNS servers is the trivial part. Having a reason for people to actually use an alternate has been the hard part. As things seem to be moving now, sooner or later the leftist will succeeded in silencing any voice but their own on the Internet. Planting the seeds for a viable plan-B now would seem prudent on our part.

I don't know if starting at the top with an alternate root DNS is the best, or even a necessary first step. Perhaps it's just changing people's mindsets that services and communities must be hosted on Google, Microsoft or Amazon infrastructure to succeed. That thinking just keeps us in a mental jail that the leftist are more than happy to perpetuate.

(That and having gone through the 'change of life' to use the classic phrase). We would be totally screwed if that happens. Hubby is about to receive a small inheritance and we are thinking about how to invest what's left after we pay off our debts. He wants to buy some cheap rural property in central or southern IL. I would like that but, I'm thinking we need to get out of IL entirely. The question is where to find a place that will be safe for normies like us to live without being attacked or persecuted for being, basically, observant Catholics. Do we have to move to some way out place in, say, Texas or the Rockies or would just moving to some rural county in S IL or MO or IN be sufficient? I hope this isn't a silly question but I don't know who else to ask except the Horde.
