An Observance of the Decay of Learned Restraint

A friend put up a picture of his childhood home on Twitter. It's apparently a big, nice house, so he was immediately assailed as flaunting his "privilege." A lot of freaking out and shrieking by the typical emotional incontinents.

He took it down. What a cuck.

I advised him to put it back up.

It is normal for people to have a little resentment at those who have/had more than they do/did. Everyone feels this.

Envy and jealousy are routine, even daily foibles.

What is abnormal -- or rather, has become the New, Awful Normal -- is for them to publicly shriek about it.

To, as David Niven once wryly put it, put their shortcomings on public exhibition.

We used to learn, as children, to restrain our pettier, nastier, more childlike emotional outbursts.

Our parents taught us to count to ten before blowing up in anger.

Our parents and our friends taught us that to display such base emotions as seething envy was uncool and childlike.

We wanted to grow up, we wanted to be seen as grown up, and so we tried to act like grown-ups. So we learned, either because of a parent's soft (but stinging) chiding, or a friend's rather less gentle insulting us as a spaz or baby, to restrain exhibitions of such childish butthurts.

We also learned -- or were taught, sometimes with some real social cruelty or an actual beat-down -- that if we had a problem, we should sort it out ourselves or just find a way to work around it, instead of running to the nearest authority figure to squeal on our playmates.

On that last point, men especially were taught to ask themselves, "Am I acting like a man here, or a whiny child in constant need of his Mommy's interventions?"

I'm sure women similarly asked themselves about their own behavior, probably thinking more in terms of propriety and maturity than about masculinity, but the effect was the same.

The rule used to be, "If you lose your shit, you've lost the game."

Now it's the exact opposite: "If you lose your shit and throw a tantrum, you win. Always. Because obviously the person who takes offense and flies into rage over nothing must have moral superiority over people who are calm and rational."

The old rules are gone now, thanks to the juvenilizing effect of social media -- where all 55 year old men pretend to be 13 year old girls. And not just for some perverted sexual goal, but because acting like a 13 year old mean girl is now just sort of how 55 year old men, who should know a damn lot better, have decided it's appropriate to present themselves.

It's also due, of course, to relentless conditioning bu the left that there is no such thing as an immature emotional outburst that should be restrained, or a minor psychic boo-boo that should be ignored and toughed out.

The left has taught society that internal emotional restraint is not to be valorized any longer; not to be treated as a personal characteristic to be valued and further trained.

The left teaches exactly the opposite -- that to restrain one's pettier, immediate emotional outbursts is to counterfeit one's True Self, a true self which is apparently a 10 year old with developmental disorders, and that what everyone must do to be #Woke is not merely permit oneself to descend into hysterics but to actively seek out reasons to descend into hysterics as frequently and as derangedly as possible.

This is all just to repeat the central insight of this still-bracing piece from Jonathan Haidt and Greg Lukianoff, The Coddling of the American Mind. In this article -- sorry that I've repeated its premise so many times -- Lukianoff discusses a previous phobia he had, and how he went through the process of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to no longer be phobic about it. Basically, CBT taught him to deliberately expose him to small doses of the thing he feared and keep telling himself There's nothing to fear here, get over it until his sensitivity to that trigger went away.

Lukianoff realized that what is going on on college campuses now -- and I would say, in society generally -- is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, but one pointed in the precise opposite direction. Rather than teaching people to not sweat minor things that might "trigger" them, to desensitize them to those triggers, this malignant version of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy teaches people to panic, throw conniptions, fly into hysterics, and descend into lower-animal rage over minor things.

Rather than training people to de-sensitize them to petty bothers, this malignant version of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy trains them to be hyper-sensitive to trivial things.

It's not merely that we are no longer valorizing -- promoting; holding up as an ideal to aspire to -- the age-old and well-proven ethic of emotional restraint and mastery of self.

We're now actively valorizing, promoting, and inculcating the exact opposite -- emotional promiscuity and performative hysteria.

And just a point here: Whenever I'm with people and we talk about such things, the word "Millennials" comes up, and people talk about how these Millennials haven't learned to be tough and restrained as we did growing up.

And there's a point there, sure, but I always want to say: Yeah, but the 55-year-old drama addicts are doing this same bullshit and they are plainly not Millennials, though they seem to like pretending to be on Twitter.

So yeah, knock the Millennials for having grown up, sadly, in an environment that did not valorize emotional forbearance but rather actively taught them emotional incontinence.

But do note: That was inflicted on them.

What about the 55-year-old drama queens who are trying to pass themselves off as Young People by acting the same way?

They were in fact taught by their parents, their same-age cohort, the people valorized in the media as role models that emotional reserve was cool, mature, and (for the menfolk) a foundational virtue of masculinity -- and yet they've abandoned all that.

They did learn these things at a younger (much younger -- much, much younger) age.

But they have chosen to unlearn them, apparently just to seem With-It with the Twitter Kidz, and maybe for the thrill of Feeling Young Again -- at least, while pretending to be a tween on Twitter.

Knock the Millennials to your heart's content, but who's really the group more worthy of mockery and scorn here? The young and irresponsible, or the old and irresponsible?

I say it's the older people who should be setting an example of how adults act but have decided to try to out-teenage the teenagers to get a few more retweets.

Anyway, I hope my friend puts the picture of his childhood home back up. It will be a bit of useful Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for the decrepit, aging infants most in need of such an astringent. It may lead them back down the path of wisdom they long ago departed, and on the path of re-learning that just because something causes them a boo-boo or butt-rash there's no reason to crying to mommy and daddy about it or to shriek hysterically for one's fwiendz to come help yell at the Bad Man.

As the Fool said to Lear: "Thou should have gotten wise before thou got old." It's past time for America's Oldest Teenagers to try to become wise as they once were in their early forties, before they began Lovin' the Twitter and decided it was good and right to have a second childhood a decade or two ahead of schedule.

To be young, physically, is a gift. To be young emotionally -- especially in your silver or silvering years -- is ridiculous and sad.

10 Yes, restraint is no longer effectively taught to the young. Even some of the not-so-young have cast it off as somehow "not the happenin' thing." But what that means is that it falls to the rest of us -- we who still value the courtesies and the traditionally understood social virtues -- to teach it to them:
1) By example;
2) By enforcement.

If persons who lack self-restraint are ostracized from all venues they value except for those entirely populated by others who lack self-restraint, we just might see some improvement. But there's effort involved -- a bit more than is required just to lament about the decline of standards.

But they will never grow up, I know every generation hates the one after them, but for millennials, it's well deserved.

I remember having a SIL that was going through therapy and the therapist told her that she should say whatever is on her mind to whoever she wants. This obviously resulted in many arguments and hurt feelings but I kept hearing this over and over from other relatives and even friends. People were being told.. say what you want.. it's your right. It's how you "heal". To which I say. BULLSHIT.

I've actually seen idiots on twitter talking about how it's privilege to have had two loving parents. That seems new to me.

Previously, someone with two loving parents were called fortunate or lucky, but in lefty cant those people are now someone to ignore/exclude because they had an unearned advantage.

In some uncommon cases, where a person's problem is being TOO inhibited and letting anger and resenment well up inside instead of expressing one's displeasure, I can see that being useful advice, up to a point.

But obviously undue emotional inhibition is not a problem that many americans are currently suffering from.

57 I'm not on Twitter any longer, but I am still very active on Facebook.

I run a group dedicated to running that currently has 34,000 members. I have my share of hysterics that show up on occasion, but I've crafted the rules of the group carefully to encourage adult behavior and to punish acting like a child. Critically, I allow all opinions to be stated and do not allow anyone to delete their posts or comments. Deletion is grounds for removal. If you say something stupid, you have to live with it and defend yourself. But you can't descend to name calling either.

It's worked pretty well for the last 3 years. The interesting thing is that every so often I need to comment and provide adult insight regarding some flare up of drama. 90%+ of the group is very appreciative of calmly delivered rational commentary.

So my experience is that the shrieking hysterics on social media is definitely there, but the majority of the people who are on Facebook really hate it, and yearn for rationality.

This is firmly encouraged in the military, especially overseas. The locals know what the f-bomb is and know you're disrespecting them. My SIL the "life coach" taught her now 30-something princess this. And we've suffered this idiocy at every family gathering since she was a toddler.

She's working at UC Berkeley now as a "student mediator."

69 Part of the thing with the house is a trend I've noticed coming on for a long time: that having something to aspire to is wrong. If you cannot have it now, if it requires planning, somehow, somewhere, an unfairness has been perpetrated against you.

That house your friend posted was probably not the first house his parents owned, or lived in on their own. They decided, most likely, that having a house like that was important to them, and they worked up to it.

Well, Generation X is now in the 40s and 50s and The Boomers, where this all arguably started, are in their 60s and 70s, so maybe this goes further back.

Don't let that stop you from joining, Fen - most of it is just fine. People post things that they are selling, or ask for recommendations for getting the roof fixed, or announce that there will be a fund-raiser for military families at this restaurant on that date, etc. There's a lot of good there.

It's when people start to treat it like Facebook that it gets ridiculous, especially because, unlike Facebook where you theoretically know your "friends," you probably don't know most of these "neighbors" because the local site encompasses many actual neighborhoods.

I skip most of it. But there have been a few gems on there.

I too continue to work daily at being more mature (mid-40's).

I'm disappointed, but not shocked, that young people are not only immature, but not striving to improve (for all the reasons cited above). They've never been taught how, why or that they should.

I'm disappointed and shocked by older people who've given up and regressed (also alluded to above). They've certainly been taught better. I don't get why they've given up.

As mentioned, I've also encountered the "I'm so old I don't give a damn" attitude, but when did self-respect become such a devalued currency?

145 I don't care if people have more stuff than me--a nicer house or car or whatever. Lot's of people do. And if it does bother me, I try hard not to tip my hand because to be outwardly upset at other people's good fortune makes you a LOSER.
That said, there are some people who never get tired of lording it over you--the perfect house, the hot car, the stunning girlfriend. These kind of people should be avoided.
And then there are people who DO have nice shit but they are still jealous if they come across people with more and nicer shit than them, they cry about how life isn't "fair."
These people deserve a punch in the face.

My father is a bit of a ball-buster and when we were all younger and we went on Sunday drives, he'd like to drive us through the most prestigious neighborhoods of Upper Montclair (NJ) where the nicest mansions were and after we oohed and aahed and talked about how lucky "they" were to be living there, he'd drive through the shittiest neighborhoods of Paterson--the burned out buildings, the boarded up homes--some which were once grand--and the litter-strewn streets.
We didn't say a word and were happy to get back to our nice house.

Maybe it's different where you live, but the only place I ever felt a sense of community is the neighborhood I grew up in during the 1970s and 1980s. I can go over there right now and there are still a few people living there from that time and they'll smile and wave like maniacs and I'd be there for two hours shooting the breeze. And I haven't lived there since 1991.

Everywhere else there is no sense of community. One barely knows the neighbors beyond a very superficial interaction. Where I grew up we used to have block parties in the summer where we closed the road off and everyone went outside and had fun together. No one has block parties here. One neighborhood did put together a small holiday parade for the little kids, but all they did was march down the street while their parents took photos of them. Very little interaction took place.

So actually I'm not surprised at all that someone acted that viciously to their neighbors.

Now he keeps track of his self discipline points himself. he knows when he earns them and when he loses them. he knows its a daily grind. He knows the penalties for losing it and the rewards for keeping it.

Virtue. If you don't know what it is, how can you expect to teach it to somebody else.

Virtue. Live it, because your children will follow your example a lot more closely than your advice.

The stuff isn't a punchline to a freakin joke. It is literally the secret to happiness, success and long life.

IIRC, most of any generation is raised by the people two generations above them. That is, most Boomers were raised by the "GI's", most Generation X by the "Silent" Generation.

My own parents were definitely Silent generation, too young to Big Band Swing and too old to Twist and Shout.

Lucky you. In the past year I've seen four accidents (and a couple near-accidents) at the intersection a quarter-mile from my house. It's really the city's fault for allowing such a poorly designed intersection to be built, but from my understanding it seems pretty much impossible for any road to go that long without a major accident.

When I was young, if you saw someone with white hair, they were dignified, wise, and generally virtuous, if not understanding of what virtue was. We're not in a culture where youth is worshipped, we're in a culture where youth is considered the highest goal of humanity, and no matter what your age, you should try to act like a child, even if you are not.

I grew up really, really (what's the right word here?) "disadvantaged," in modern lingo.

Father was a (in retrospect) alcoholic womanizer. Mother was (in retrospect) severely mentally ill. They fought constantly when I was a baby, frequently ignoring me and not attending to my basic needs. They finally split up when I was seven, Dad moved out, Mom had a "nervous breakdown," stopped feeding me and my sister, Dad basically disappeared, never paid one dime of child support or alimony, while my mom descended into narcissistic madness, and for several years me and my sister were basically "street urchins," scrounging food from local communes and temples. (This was in a total hippie area, so most old Victorian houses were "open communes," where drifters could come and go; the temples were Hare Krishna temples.) My sister did not "survive" the turmoil, emotionally, and eventually fell into the drug world, never to emerge. I've been self-supporting since I was seven; never got an allowance, never was fed, never had clothes bought for me, etc. When I turned 12, my mother emerged from her psychotic haze to start charging me rent for living at home in our tiny dilapidated house. I refused to pay (with what money?), but every month she added it up, and when I finally moved out for college, she presented me with a "back rent" bill of umpty-umpty-ump thousand dollars. To this day, she still insists that I owe it to her.

Paid my way through college 100% at minimum wage jobs, and never got one iota of help from my parents or anyone else in my family.

And so when I hear anyone -- ANYONE -- complaining about "privilege" or "being disadvantaged" I have to suppress my rage and disdain. Give me fuckin' break. And in 99% of those cases, when I hear their "hard luck story," they actually were vast better off and had cushier lives than I ever did.

And yet through all of this, I never once had ever ever played the "poverty" card or the "disadvantaged" card or any of the other cards.

Fuck everyone who played the victimization game. My patience with them is used up. Completely.

My mom, however, was the princess of her family growing up, and retained that prima donna bullshit all throughout our lives. True, and your spouse and the grandparents when you are talking about your kids, but it is also nice to have friends that you can share things with.

I remember a time when a friend had connections so her family (kids were in elementary school) were going to attend one of those Kid's Choice Awards. Yes, for a moment I was jealous (kinda a bucket list fun thing to do sometime) but really her going had no effect on my not going. So I was really happy for her and texted her about looking for them during the show and just generally had fun being excited for them. We never talked about it but I think the fact that I didn't make them feel bad about their opportunity and was able to be happy for them is why they brought my girls some messenger bags from the event.

Yes. We've been lied to too. I haven't heard the shrieks as the liars are lifted from their feet to swing from the lamp posts, so I assume the blame falling on us now is probably due.

There likely isn't a name for the generation yet. Millenials were just "Generation Y" for quite a while before they went with Millenial. I believe I qualify as one and I'm pretty sure it only became the identifier within the last decade.
