Wow: British, Australian Police Now Affirmatively Enforcing Islamic Law

Definitely watch.

If you don't have much time, watch from 4:10 to 9:20. A woman asked police why Muslims were being permitted to engage in group prayer in a park, despite the fact that ordinances forbade that, and such ordinances were in fact enforced against all religions except Islam.

The cop refused to enforce the law or explain why it was merely "discretionary" in this case.

But that's not even the outrageous part. The outrageous part is that the very next day, police pounded on the door and arrested her for "perverting the cause of justice" -- all on videotape.

In "normal" times that would be my thinking too. But in this case it goes beyond a simple double standard, I think.

My sense is that the Muslims in the video know that praying there is against the law and are flouting the law because they know it won't be enforced against them. And it then becomes a demonstration to all who see it that they are above/beyond the law.

It's a consciously menacing performance, even if you don't regard the praying itself as menacing.

But it *HAS* to be public, *HAS* to be ostentatious, because the biggest reason it's such a deal is to enforce conformity and mark the outsiders.

America is not a atheist country. I'm a Christian and a Protestant to be exact, literally my ancestors fled Englnd and Europe during the Reformation to come here. Where I'm I suppose to go? No, the obvious first take is *not* that shutdown-theater is bad for the GOP, or the WH (whichever flavor), or for anyone in particular - there's no real set pattern at all of serious political consequences. Since the party "shutting down" things has never clearly suffered at the next election, it's not at all a reliable axiom that it's politically dangerous. I believe that last two times the GOP Congress was the perp, they gained seats. Probably for other, pre-existing reasons.

Anyway the rest of ace's post was spot-on, if understated. The GOP is the problem, always has been the problem, with the Senate GOP becoming noticeably worse. In 2010 the Senate GOP - and it was shocking - actually provided then-Speaker Boehner, after the red tsunami mid-term, with tremendous leverage in the last-minute budget drama made possible by the political incompetence of Obama's WH and the Dems generally.

He of course squandered it - instantly. It was pretty stunning. Today, it is inconceivable the Senate GOP would engage in politics, and actually work with the House to get something important done (while damaging their "opponents" in the mid-terms at the same time).

210 Late to the thread. Just wanted to say that this is the most awful, depressing, and scary thing I've seen all year.

I think Britain's only chance to survive is for the men of the nation to don masks, grab fiery torches, clubs, chains, bottles, or whatever else they can find, and inform the police, in a most persuasive manner, that their services are no longer required and that they are relieved. Then they can instruct the government to "do better" with the next force, and that they'll be handling patrols in the meantime.
