I've seen pics of 3D-printed guns. They almost always look like they're made out of some type of thick plastic. My question is: sure it's great that 3D printing will enable people to make their own weapons, but how durable have these weapons turned out to be so far? Never been hunting, aside from accompanying my buddy and his dad, who would go mule deer hunting. I would sometimes hang around my dad as he butchered the deer he got. Me and my brothers would dare each other to poke the eyeballs, and we would have sword fights with the severed lower legs. Somehow we were never traumatized by the carnage.
Dad stopped hunting by the time I was old enough. I have a Mossberg .30-06 that I have zeroed, but have not shot all that much otherwise. Nice weapon, though. Ammo costs a shit-0ton of dough. Posted by: Pug Mahon, Not Really Here at July 29, 2018 07:43 PM (EhZNT) 18

With even modest success in hunting and fishing, one can keep a good freezer-full of tasty cuts of various game.
This ties into the food thread, (kinda)... in that having an even broader variety of meats serves greatly to keep the kitchen a lively, interesting place of happy surprises, the year round. Plus, the satisfaction of having literally "brought home the bacon", as it were. Jim Sunk New Dawn Galveston, TX Posted by: Jim at July 29, 2018 07:45 PM (QzJWU) 20

As you know, the 2nd is not about hunting. As a lifetime NRA member the 2nd is the corner stone of the Bill of Rights. But I do hunt. Deer in Iowa and Minnesota where I own a small cabin on a lake near Bemidji. Deer in the northwoods is more challenging, I use a 357 lever action carbine up there. 180 grain semijacketed flat point
Also rabbits, pleasants, and varmints on my little farm with a Rossi 62 22LR. Hunting sharpens the skills of patience, stalking, and careful shot opportunities. "I am guided by the beauty of our weapons." Posted by: colfax mingo at July 29, 2018 07:46 PM (enccL) 22

The picture up top reminded me that, when the show Magnum P.I. first aired, the Vietnam War was still a very recent memory. I heard that it's being re-booted, so I suppose this current generation's Magnum will have played in the Sand Box.
Mrs Cop wanted to go shooting today and she kept the majority of hits inside the 0-ring of an IDPA target at about 10 yards. Misses went low into the abdomen/pelvic area so remind me never to piss her off. I took the Auto-Ordnance .45 Auto that I inherited from the Old Man; he bought it new in 1983 and didn't shoot it much. The only thing I did was lube it well (the steel was so bone-dry, the steel was soaking up the oil) and put some walnut copies of the GI "Double Diamond" grips on it (the factory grips are an unattractive brown-black plastic). The only .45ACP I've been shooting has been my Glock model 36 and it's been about 15 years since I've shot a full-sized M1911 clone. The felt recoil seemed substantially less -- not really surprising once I thought about how much more the M1911 weighs compared to the G36. It seems that most hunters have a family tradition passed on to them. My father had hunted as a boy and then given it up, supposedly because he felt bad about not being able to retrieve a deer he'd hit. (Family lore is unreliable).
I tried to teach myself hunting in my 30s. I had some fair success murdering waterfowl from a kayak. I managed two grouse from hundreds of hours tramping through the woods. And as for deer hunting, well I have carried a rifle in the woods during deer season. It seems like a different culture from fishing culture. Fishing you can usually find someone to hook up with and explore and share things. It's hard to find a true fishing partner, but it can be done. I have one. But the process is sort of open. You don't just get invited to someone's deer camp. Someone's deer camp is their sacred thing. It's mostly, as far as I can tell, not about deer. But it's also about deer and I haven't found people to share that with the way I have with fishing people. Posted by: Bandersnatch at July 29, 2018 07:53 PM (fuK7c) 36

My Island of Misfit Surplus Weapons has a new resident.
I liberated a Cz 82 which was languishing in a local pawn shop in my AO, chambered in Makarov 9mm, with one magazine. Made in 1983 in the old commie Czechoslovakia. It was a good price, $219.00, but was missing the slide stop and slide stop spring. I procured both before I bought it, just to make sure the parts were not like hen's teeth. I found both at Buymilsurp.com which have odd, hard to find items for old surplus guns. Replaced slide stop and slide stop spring, which was a bit of a chore, but after a nice cleaning she runs fine while few dry firing and I will take her out on my next pistol shoot and put her through her paces. She seems to appreciate her new home and now to get a couple of extra magazines to help keep her fed and happy. Posted by: Hairyback Guy at July 29, 2018 07:56 PM (EoRCO) 43

So I would kill something and bring it to her and she would try to figure out how it was worth eating. Tried sea ducks (nope, no matter what), regular teal and mallards (yum), Canada geese (sometimes). Fish was a no-brainer, she did amazing things with striped bass. Yesterday, I bought 'my last pistol', a PPQ 45. Used, former range rental...so it might be a bit worn. But the price was killer, under $500 + tax. Hard to find a PPQ 45 for that price.
Like the PPQ 9mm I own, it shoots like magic. It's a little too lightweight but the stippling on the grip is snug enough. Accurate enough to shoot eyes out at 10 meters. Bizarrely, the grip is the exact size as the 9mm version or so close I can't feel the diff. Only instead of 15/17 rounds of 9mm, it holds 12 rounds of 45. I'm going to be re-taking the General Defense Handgun course in two weeks with it. Just bought 4 spare mags (damn expensive at $40 a pop) for it. Depending on what state you're in, you should be able to hunt on State Lands, which here in Texas, is done by winning a "drawing" for the permit and dates. Otherwise? Get to know the best Taxidermists in your area. They'll know the best guides and other Hunting Professionals, and can help make the connections for you. Be sure to book a Guide as a Hunting TEACHER, and not just a professional provider at getting you that one "clear shot" opportunity which is what the average client seeks. One or two seasons with a Guide, and you'll be good to go. But do take note of my suggestion to hang out at a good Taxidermist, if they'll let you. You'll see a lot, learn a lot, and meet a lot of hunters and outdoorsmen, there. Additionally, you could offer to help for cheap, at a local game-processing facility. You'll learn how to properly treat game, you'll see field dressing done right, and customers bringing in spoiled game where it was done wrong. And of course, you'll also make scads of contacts with hunters, landowners, guides, etc. You just have to get out there and amongst 'em. Believe me, the invitations WILL happen. Here's something I would like you guys to watch. It's not gun related, but it actually is. It's a guy arguing against a DRM system for video games called Denuvo. When it came out originally it worked pretty well at preventing pirating of games for well over a month. But now it's a joke and they are cracking it basically the day or two after a game releases, And its been shown to hinder the performance of some games that people have legally purchased, so you're punishing the people not breaking the law.
So anyways, he's arguing to just stop with the DRM that doesn't work, but he tries to argue that its different than his view on how there needs to be stricter gun control laws. So basically he's too stupid to realize his advocacy to remove DRM because its only hurting those that legally buy the game is the exact same as gun control. It's only going to punish the people that legally buy guns. https://youtu.be/dmRJ89UiycM Posted by: buzzion at July 29, 2018 08:05 PM (lKs2v) 66

Though there are metal 3D printers, they're pricey. For the polymer, you can probably use polymer for everything but the barrel right now in the really real world. At the moment, polymer barrels are only good for a few shots, though in SHTF scenarios, it could be used to 'obtain' better guns, like the old Liberty Pistols of WW2. I don't hunt much anymore. When I was young, I'd go out with my older cousin sometimes. My parents were terrified of guns, so never got the real family connection.
Posted by: Mark Andrew Edwards at July 29, 2018 07:59 PM (xJa6I) ----------- I used to tag along on Fox hunts a friend of mine's Dad would go out on. Never hunted directly myself. This was in Suburban Chicago in the late 60s. The Dad had a nice collection of shotguns/rifles in a display case for all to see. Amazing how much things have changed there since that time. My Mom and Dad both grew up in the city, my Dad in an apartment. They were not anti gun, we just did not have any. I moved to GA at 24, and bought my first gun at 25. It felt like I was doing something illegal. Posted by: Calm Mentor at July 29, 2018 08:07 PM (I16G8) 70

And of course, you'll also make scads of contacts with hunters, landowners, guides, etc.
You just have to get out there and amongst 'em. Believe me, the invitations WILL happen. Thanks. Good to know. Here in CT there's shotgun hunting on some state lands and rifle hunting only on private property with explicit permission, and I'm not really situated to meet the people with that property. MA was similar, NH was pretty easy, so I did my deer "hunting" there. Posted by: Bandersnatch at July 29, 2018 08:09 PM (fuK7c) 72

My question is: sure it's great that 3D printing
will enable people to make their own weapons, but how durable have these weapons turned out to be so far? I would bet many 3D-printed guns can't be fired too many times, before they would explode apart. Or do you just get around the 'durability' issue by making a ton of them and use them one after the other? Posted by: qdpsteve ...............From what I've read, 3D printing is just a passing fad. The real technology breakthrough is CNC milling of lower receivers. (And probably any other part you choose. There was a court case a few weeks ago won by one of the proponents of sharing the CNC instructions. The government was trying to say trading CNC instructions is like trading/distributing real weapons, and argued that was banned.. judge through that out. So, now, you can make your own out of high quality metals.. you just need a couple thousand dollar machine to do it.. but the price of those is coming down.. and a club, say a gun club for instance, could purchase and share such a machine. The only practical fully non-metal printed guns I've seen have one-use barrels. As in, after every shot you unscrew the barrel and replace it. As I noted earlier, most of the other ones are really just end-runs around the fact the government considers the lower receiver to be the gun, so if you print the lower receiver and buy all the other parts it counts as a self manufacture and doesn't require a serial number. Reading that Russia milsurp bust story, I think the author probably has it right - these were mostly guns destined to be sold on the collector's market. Though I'm not sure a (live) Panzerfaust counts as purely a "collector's item" (many here would love to have one as that special back-up system, I'm sure).
I have been fascinated by the PTRD (the Soviet anti-tank rifle) since I have seen them in films and documentaries, but haven't looked into them. I assume they quickly became mostly useful against thin-skinned vehicles (maybe to include the Mk I German tanks?). Haven't looked online to see if anyone has test-fired them on UToob. Have to say that of all the hardware in that bust, two items still easily top the list of the ones I'd grab - the Thompsons, and the M1919. Something about both I love - the M1919 actually seems like it was a tremendously useful and versatile system, easily man-portable, quick to set up, able to deliver impressive amount of fire. I go on prairie dog hunts in western Kansas to keep sharp, most of our shots are at 700 yards. On ammo, shipping costs, etc. - ammoseek.com. You can do dummy orders to check out what total costs/incl. shipping are, but their basic matrix has a column that rates shipping expense for each vendor with a relative scale.
Not really buying ammo for some time, I still use ammoseek to get prices on reloading components for judging local private sale prices. Investigating Detective: Grannie, why did you shoot him 5 times.
Grannie: My weapon jammed. I don't hunt anymore but that is how I got into firearms - mostly pheasant and rabbits. I don't live where hunting is easily doable but, even if it was, I don't think I would enjoy it anymore. I have range time coming up this week - a woman at work says she wants to hold my gun and learn to use it. I'm pretty sure she doesn't really want that , I'll show her the basics of using an AR platform instead. Applied Talon grips to my S/W Shield the other day. I like the new feel alot. Watched the 1980s movie "The Shooting Party" this weekend. Another of those "things are deteriorating to WWI" movies. But one scene stood out...near the end, where two of the upper crust males were keeping score on game they had shot. One man was so into the "at any cost" mentality that he shot when he shouldn't, injuring (and killing) a beater. James Mason, in one of his last roles, makes the most cutting comment a man could here at that time: "You didn't shoot like a gentleman." Any guy with a gun instinctively knows what he means. And hopes to never hear that about himself.

have been fascinated by the PTRD (the Soviet anti-tank rifle) since I have seen them in films and documentaries, but haven't looked into them. I assume they quickly became mostly useful against thin-skinned vehicles (maybe to include the Mk I German tanks?). Haven't looked online to see if anyone has test-fired them on UToob.

You can ban hunting and it doesn't make it to SCOTUS, at least not as a 2nd Amendment case. The problem in states like Illinois where I live is that they put in place carve outs in gun control to keep the hunters feeling safe, or the national match Garand shooters, current and retired cops, and in some cases veterans.
IMO the carve outs have to be scrapped. I don't hunt but I support hunters. When you take away my semi automatic rifles, limit magazine size and do other extreme crap like you have in 4 deep blue commie states then I move to the closest part of America I can find and you won't have me around to support you when they go for CA style hunting restrictions.

--- Needs a LOT of breaking in. I was almost unable to pull the trigger on the first magazine. That got better. Got 5 magazines. 2 of them are unusable. The slide locks up when you rack it with them in the grip. a 3rd magazine "works" but, over 27 shots, the slide didn't return 23 or 24 times. I could rerack and fire the shot but that's not how it's supposed to work! Other 2 mags are fine. I'll be returning the 3 lemons. The gun is *very* comfortable to hold but, with the heavy trigger pull, it's not pleasant to shoot. Low recoil, a bit of muzzle flip. I'll be seeing a gunsmith to see what he can do about the trigger. A tech at Classic Firearms says the glock-style trigger they installed interacts with the magazine safety resulting in a lot of metal on metal contact that makes the trigger stiff. I could remove the mag safety I could remove the trigger and replace with an original TT-33 trigger (less than $20!) I could do both! I'll discuss it with the gunsmith. My estimate is that when I get the trigger issue resolved I'll like shooting this a lot! Posted by: ArthurK at July 29, 2018 09:09 PM (OunYr) 238
To answer the questions above about printed guns -
The quality is going to depend on how good the printer is. Right now, a 3D printer that's affordable for the average person isn't going to have the needed quality to make a durable weapon. But the quality of the printers is improving. As an example, I read a year or so ago that the aviation industry (which is DEFINITELY not going to tolerate low quality parts) has started to use the printers. I'd guess that the ones they're using are a much better quality - and significantly more expensive - than what a hobbyist would be able to afford. So give it another decade, and I'll bet you'll be able to print a decent quality gun as the prices come down on the printers. Posted by: junior at July 29, 2018 09:10 PM (sJed/) 239

the bulldozer just left yesterday, partly clearing up some of the deer food plots. But I don't hunt, I mostly take pictures of the wildlife ... though may one day take a deer. I just put down a bunch of clover, alfalfa, radish before a 2" rain so should look good for fall/winter.
Would love to attract turkey, quail, maybe even pheasant. To do that also takes removing a lot of "vermin" that have gotten out of control. So I don't "hunt" I "guard" -- the garden compound, which is about a half acre. That's all just 22 action, and sometimes cage traps. Posted by: illiniwek at July 29, 2018 09:11 PM (bT8Z4) 244

30-06 Plinker, pretty much what Weasel said.
Garand ammo has pressure profiles within a certain range, designed to operate the rifle's gas system but not damage the gun (op rod is usually what people talk about, but I'm not sure I've ever seen an example of a bent op rod). Primers may/may not be "military", that is thicker cups, less sensitive, because of the M1's floating firing pin. I use the military ones, many reloaders do not - not sure what Prvi uses. And dang, that's a very good price for Prvi Garand ammo (partly due to the free shipping part). I have a can of 500 myself, bought last year during my final stocking up on commercial ammo before yet another new stupid CA law took effect, which is my "reserve". I've still got several hundred rounds of Greek HXP surplus to shoot up - I use that brass for reloading. Posted by: rhomboid at July 29, 2018 09:20 PM (QDnY+) 259

Posted by: Ace's liver at July 29, 2018 09:19 PM (h2Bdk) --- yeah, i was talking with some LAPD cops before a meeting, and one told me, after i'd mentioned CCW as a way of reducing crime, that only police should be allowed to carry. i asked him how often he went to the range. he said he only went for qualification, because they didn't pay him to otherwise. i giggled, and he was not pleased. i also upset a few when i opined that one good ol' boy in the neighborhood could have stopped the North Hollywood Shoot Out with two rounds of a deer rifle, because "what bullet proof vest?" i then suggested that a smart cop would carry a Garand or M1-A in the trunk, or at least an AR-10, and not an AR-15. that way you would have penetration AND firepower. yup: winning friend and influencing people, everywhere i go. JAS, I sense that awareness of the Senate's near complete failure (even to try and shape the political landscape such that GOP numbers there would grow) is quite limited. It's one reason I whined earlier today about the "losing" going on - not "winning".
Apart from Grassley at Judiciary, on the Mega-Scandals, and occasionally Johnson at Oversight on the same - and of course judicial appointments - Senate is a complete disaster (in terms of actually helping make Trump's key agenda items reality). On immigration/border security, and spending (not yet clear about key specific things, like EPA budget), stage is set for another debacle. Trump oddly said today he'd do shutdown-theater over it. I see no signs of any plan to make the key issues the ones that tilt the Senate races. Posted by: rhomboid at July 29, 2018 09:37 PM (QDnY+) 283

@112 I believe the events surrounding the Irene Incident led to the plot line of the Milt Caniff adventure comic strip "Terry and The Pirates."

Especially so-called 'trophy' hunting. And I own a gun and am totally 2nd A. Posted by: Bobby Ahr ------------------------------------- Not true. Animal populations need to be managed or overpopulation and disease becomes a problem. Recently Kansas City hired professional bow hunters to cull the deer population within city limits because of all the traffic accidents. Have hunted since a kid. First with Dad and brothers, then with a good friend and nowadays with my sons. We always stressed practicing shooting because it's important to take animals humanely, and we do get a lot of game and have hunted all over this great nation. Never really thought of guns as weapons until I was an adult. Rifles and shotguns were considered sports equipment like a bat and ball. My dad, his brothers and his friends were all either WW2 or Korean war vets. Maybe they didn't want to see them as weapons any more.

The 2nd Amd. of course is not about hunting. Or even crime, per se although it recognizes a God-given right of self-defense.
It is about the security of a free state. Not a Deep State. A free state, comprised of free people. And resistance to an unfree state. Many a would-be tyrant has choked on the 2nd. It is my firm belief that they would have already herded us into the camps without it. They wouldn't have even bothered to hide the recent and ongoing Deep State Coup Attempt if there were no 2nd Amd. Our Founders knew the urge to tyrannize was a permanent feature of fallen man. Couple of observations:
Michigan reports 300k deer taken during rifle season. That doesn't count bow and black powder Car deer accidents are substantial. So it's a heck of a population which can sustain maybe 400k non-natural deaths. Farmers consider them 200lb rats. Any recipe--referring to venison--which starts out, "Sautee two pounds of onions in garlic butter"..... For generations, any popular hero was supposed to have served in the previous war, whichever one that was. Even the Roy Blakely series about Boy Scouts in the Twenties had an occasional character "Harry" who'd served in WW II. The exception, of course, was Viet Nam. Magnum PI was the first, imo, to return to that trope. Good on them. Posted by: Richard Aubrey at July 30, 2018 12:35 AM (FfjkM) 352

Such a fitting tribute. I forgot to mention I have a 5' by 3 ' (ie5x3) laminated, above my bed, of the naked bluebell wood.s Best money I ever spent. Posted by: Respectful admirer at July 30, 2018 01:15 AM (4ICl5) 353
I'm not a hunter; I just have a very modest collection of guns that I shoot for target practice only. That being said, I have no opposition to hunting: I just don't do it myself. (But if I DO see a coyote come this way, it will live a short and exciting life.)

Let Gilboa make a double AR-10, with one side a shotgun, and they've got a sale.

There is elitism in hunting also. I always find the people who hunt and are pro gun control are the country club hunters. They go on bird hunts with a $30,000 dollar shotgun with a butler in tow. They are the deer hunters who have a trophy room full of 160 inch and above bucks....yet only hunt one day a year and with a guide. Basically they hunt to get in the elite social circles.....and frown on the 'hillbilly' hunters who actually put in their time in the woods to become real hunters.
