NBC Poll: Trump Support Rises to 45%; GOP and Democrat Party at Parity

A couple of tweets I omitted: one noting that the public is at statistical parity as to whether they have a positive view of ICE or a negative one, and Trump's positions/reflexes on Russia are so low it suggests that his Russia views are unpopular, and are dragging down his general level of support.

The poll numbers themselves mean less than doodily squat. Might just as well be random. It's the general reaction to the numbers that is most informative and amusing.

Polls are obsolete. Until they radically change how they're done, they'll never be reliable.

Except in one regard - the polls are, by and large, the tools of the Party and State. So they're consistently dishonest.

I don't wonder whether the polls are true (they're not), but: why does the Party want this poll result pushed to the public?

In that sense, I think they're useful.

So in this case, my suspicion is that the Dem/GOPe internals have them scared about November, and want these polls out showing the Marxists under water - but just barely. I think these are scare-polls, for GOTV purposes.

58 This is a poll that I am 99% certain oversamples Dems and calls them "Independents."

Look at the trend lines. Disapproval going down for Trump, approval going UP. Again, in a poll that probably oversamples Dems. He's probably at 50% approval in the real world (higher in some areas of the country - MUCH higher).

If we have good Q2 numbers (which we will) and unemployment is less than 4% by Nov (which it will be) AND we have regime change in Iran by October (which I think will happen) AND Trump stumps for Republicans at risk (which he loves to do). Then... Well, yeah, there's not a chance in Hell of a "Blue Wave" happening.

Add to this the FISA IG report coming in August, and potential lots more very interesting docs being declassified... well... hold on to your hats, folks. This is gonna be fun.

That seems to be low. But what does that number mean?

I disapprove of how they are treated, because I think it's a mistake to tolerate them being here. They should be immediately shipped to their country of origin.

This doesn't affect my opinion of the President, because until there is a non-RINO majority of conservatives in Congress, his hands are tied.

Same with the border security question. Why do more disapprove? Because there's no wall. Why is that? RINOs. It doesn't really indicate a disapproval of Trump as such.

There should be a blue wave, because you always get one when a single party controls both houses of Congress plus the presidency. If it doesn't happen it's a failure of epic proportions on the part of Democratic party leadership.

163 If you follow one poll over time, it will tell you whether or not a trend exists. If you try to aggregate polls like 538, a lot of polls are crap and your aggregate number will reflect crappy data. At least when I spent any time looking at 538, supposedly they have a winnowing for really bad polls based on performance. Media polls are generally pretty bad. If you must look at polling, look to where the same questions have been asked over time with overly broad responses allowed such as what are the ten most important issues facing USA today. Then look at favorability polling where the parties positions on these issues are sampled. Take the 5 most important issues or so. The party that best aligns with these salient issues usually does a bit better at the polls. The naive model simply uses the economy but I am not so sure that this works as well in a hetergenous polity.

In general, general population polls have a vague relationship with election results, registered voters somewhat better, and then polls using likely voters during the last 60 days or so have a pretty good linkage with final results. Figuring out how to select "likely voters" from "liars" is much more problematic. Curiously enough, it is actually harder to poll races such as a congressional seat than it is statewide races. Statewide races in term are harder to poll than overall national population attitudes. Has to do with representative samples, the increasing difficulty in getting polling responses, and selection of likely voters. Early voting has also made it more difficult as some trends are baked into the cake earlier rather than later.

The really expensive private polls conducted for candidates are the gold standard and 538 guru used the Obama campaign's during Obama election years to tweak his formula. Hillary's were apparently crap and drug 538 and probably NYT down with them.

BTW some private polls are shown to donors simply to get them to donate to a "winnable" race. These are often crap polls too.

Everyone is trying to figure out how to do so online like Google through its spin off political shops, and Facebook related analysis such as Cambridge Analytica. My suspicion with no inside knowledge is that these models break down at the congressional level.

Ask me after Labor Day--my suspicion is if the economy stays good then the Repubs do okay. If a Storm breaks, then maybe something like 2002 midterms.

Any moderate Dems are hearing that, no matter how much they may dislike Trump, the Dems plan to plunge this country into a nightmare if they win. Not that they'll oppose the President's agenda, but that they'll try to actually remove him from office, and damn the consequences.

I think this may have a shocking effect on turnout, and not one that they're going to like.

The backlash ought to be for not having a funny molecule in his body. The man simply has no talent. Maybe it's his writers, but he is seriously unfunny. And the British accent can't carry him because his funny is so bad.

South Park had Noah nailed when they spoofed Whoopi: "Republicans are Trump is so stupid. I hate Republicans Trump." And that's the extent of it. It's embarrassingly bad. I think it might be less humorous than The View. So you can appreciate the level of unfunny we're talking about.

273 Re 239,
Most polling does include cell phones now but that in itself is a problem. Increasingly mobile voters using cells or folks using VOIP may be using a number that does not reflect the area code where they can actually vote. I'd imagine that this would be an issue in places like Florida or California. There are also important demographic issues, the rise of call blocking technology etc.

The gold standard is personal interviews but that is incredibly expensive. The next is to do polling but crosscheck with random personal interviews (knocking on doors), again it is very expensive. Ideally likely voter screens should cross check voter lists to see if they actually voted in the past--best predictor is someone who votes in even off year school and municipal elections, and so forth.

Used to do field research and the old combination of personal interviews in random geographic tracts combined with an overall list provides the best chance to minimize error.

They used to, and supposedly they were going to rectify that, but I don't know how. If I see a number I don't recgnize I never pick up. It is why I doubt polls so much. I don't know if they have pollers in malls and stuff...they used to. But again, I can't remember when I last went to a mall, or even answering someone when I did. So it is really difficult to believe the polls...bcz they are skewed. Plus, people lie. See 2106.
Posted by: platypus, gg channel at July 23, 2018 05:54 PM (HwGIC)

From what I remember, sample size is on the order of 2000. So, that's what, around 15 parts per million when compared to the number of voters in the last election. Each answer represents 65000 or so people. Not something I'd trust, no.

And then, are the respondents' answers honest? Someone calls me, I presume they know whom they are calling. How many people give honest answers nowadays?

Is the poll honest? Or is the sample skewed?

Historically, polls tracked closer to results the closer you got to en election, but 2016 kinda threw that out the window, didn't it?

308 Israel used its David's Sling interceptor system for the first time on Monday, launching two missiles against SS-21 Tochka tactical ballistic missiles fired from Syria as part of the internal fighting in the war-torn country.

Red alert incoming-rocket sirens sounded across the North on Monday morning, first in Safed and the Galilee region at 10:05 a.m. and moments later in the Golan Heights and Katzrin. Sirens wailed again in the Galilee and Golan less than half an hour later.
"The alarms that were heard in northern Israel were the result of launches that were carried out as part of the internal fighting in Syria," the IDF said.

"As a result, two David's Sling interceptors were fired at the rockets, as there was a fear they could strike Israeli territory. The Syrian rockets landed inside Syrian territory. No damage was caused, and there were no injuries," the military said.

-
It's unclear, at least to me, whether the reason that there was no damage or injuries was that the David's Slings were fired.

Access to classified information is always a two part test - does this person have the correct security clearance, and does this person have a need to know the information? I don't see how she passes the second part for more than a year now.
Posted by: Ace's liver

Correct, these guys keep their clearances to go to collateral meetings and conferences held at that level - and to keep their clearances valid - so they can quickly spin up into jobs with a need to know.

342 The defense establishment is expected to be able to point to the reason the interception failed within the next two or three days. The cause of the failure is likely technological in nature, and not related to the Air Force operators of the system, who made a reasonable decision to launch the two interceptor missiles from the David's Sling permanent site in the north.

And can they get an accurate cross-section of the country that way? Everyone keeps their cell numbers when they move, now, so you can theoretically call every area code in the country and only talk to current residents of New York.

The area code on my cell number is not the area code I live in. Nor is it the area code I lived in when I got the phone. Nor is it the area code of the store where I bought it. It is in the same state, though; Minnesota has 7 area codes.

371 Here's an interesting piece of info...

I've been reloading and filtering the Reuters 5 day rolling average generic House ballot and there are some interesting things there...

On July 14th, two days before the Helsinki summit, the generic ballot stood at 51.3% Dems, 37% Rep. A 14 point gap. That gap has steadily dropped every day since. Down from 14 to 10 to 5, and the latest data still only shows July 19th, with the gap down to 3. Democrat support dropped from 51.3% to 45% in 5 days.

The best thing that could happen is happening - Democrat implosion. I don't think the public generally responds well to calling the President's actions "treason".

Good thing that's basically all they have - anti Trump rage. Good luck with that, Democrats!!!

374 BTW, my filter on that is registered voters that claim they cast a vote for either Trump or Clinton in 2016.

Weird thing is, if you filter down to small groups, the poll gets very suspect. Among those that claim they are "very conservative", on July 17th a full 17.8% claimed they would vote Democrat. I don't buy that for one second. In two days, that number is down to 12.8%. Huh ?

When you include very, moderately, and lean conservative, it's just 59.2% GOP, 19.5% Democrats. This with 88% of Republicans approving of Trump's job. Again, that does not compute. They are 47% of voters, liberals are 37%.

Liberals, conversely are at 70% Dems to 8% GOP. That I believe.

Posted by: deadrody at July 23, 2018 07:03 PM (jsGbO)

375 Get this - A full 7% of all respondants consider themselves very, moderately, or lean conservative, yet voted for Clinton.

Oh, even better. A full 9% of all people claim they are conservative, but registered Democrats.

Posted by: deadrody at July 23, 2018 07:07 PM (jsGbO)

376 its like when hitler attacked stalin you don't know who to boo for! trump or was hilary now nancy pelosi what a choice! this is why democratic party establishment is more scared of alexandra ocasio-cortez then republicans are! sandernistas won't be primarying republicans! also never trumpets are leaving republican party leaving it to the populists leaving the wealthy donor class of both partys with no place togo to buy influence.
