Report: James Gunn Fired from Guardians of the Galaxy
Looks like this is true. From the Hollywood Reporter:
"The offensive attitudes and statements discovered on James' Twitter feed are indefensible and inconsistent with our studio's values, and we have severed our business relationship with him," Walt Disney Studios chairman Alan Horn said in a statement Friday. On Thursday, Gunn tweeted in response to the tweets being resurfaced, "Many people who have followed my career know, when I started, I viewed myself as a provocateur, making movies and telling jokes that were outrageous and taboo. As I have discussed publicly many times, as I've developed as a person, so has my work and my humor." He added: "It's not to say I'm better, but I am very, very different than I was a few years ago; today I try to root my work in love and connection and less in anger. My days saying something just because it's shocking and trying to get a reaction are over." The offensive tweets came to light after conservative website The Daily Caller dug up the social media posts, which were mostly posted in 2008 and 2009. Soon after, conservative personalities were tweeting to followers to confront Gunn at Comic-Con. Gunn had been expected to be at Sony's presentation on Friday. Insiders say Gunn is not expected to be part of the panel now.I don't feel great about that, if true, given that he was fired due to fake rage over what seems to be nonsense. But then, sometimes you have to take a scalp just to demonstrate to the scalp-takers that you can respond in kind.

Well, you may think it's unfortunate in principle, but practically it's unavoidable. GotG is a kid's franchise compared to the other Marvel movies. They need to focus on that market.
Can you imagine parents bringing their kids to the theatre all the while thinking that the director is a guy who wrote "I know it might be sick, but that story [about a monkey ejaculating on a child] makes me extremely happy". At that point it's not a question of being overly prudish. They're just not going to trust this guy any longer.
The risk of losing out on the kids' market is simply too big for Disney to stick to their Gunn.

I don't mean to argue or be contrary, quite the opposite, I find the discussion of what makes things funny and what makes humor fascinating because as everyone here knows all too well I'm not a humorous person at all. And as everyone here knows, you are.
But I don't see that at all. For something work as humor, there has to be a connection, even if its ironic. "she's so beautiful she'd make a Bishop kick out a stained glass window" If there's no connection between the two things, at most you just have surprise and shock, which can make people laugh but not because they find it funny so much as discomfort and surprise.

I think we all can't figure out why people find some things funny. I watch some anime and I know that what they showed was supposed to be hilarious, and maybe in Japan it worked but... its just idiotic to me, or even annoying.
Humor isn't the same for everyone, especially culturally. For us as Americans, British humor really connects, but not so much some other cultures, like French or German.
I have kind of a weird mind, I like to know not just how something works, but why. Its like picking the lock on a treasure chest, it opens up so much more when I can puzzle it out and make it work. Then I understand more of life and how people are. And that applies much more broadly than just the single topic.
Sometimes we just cannot know, and that's frustrating. And I expect its annoying or tedious for other people to be inside my head when I'm doing this, too.

What's interesting is that Woody Allen says that his character, that awkward dorky guy, he based entirely on Bob Hope's character. His moves, his jokes, his reactions, etc. He said it was a way of getting through life despite being very shy and awkward. He turned on that guy and could be successful in social situations. If you watch them side by side it becomes really obvious, even though Woody's delivery is not the same.

Anything corrective just makes them lash out more.
It's something I've always liked better about the Right than the Left. On our side, for one thing, there's room for dissent.
And with given individuals you'll frequently hear things like:

"I was for the death penalty, but then ... and now I'm not."
You never, ever hear a leftist change their mind. On the occasions when one does, they have to leave altogether like #WalkAway, because there is no room for heterodoxy.

Totally agree. I actually sent an angry letter (probably never read) years ago to Jay Leno during his "Michael Jackson and little boys" joke phase" Every joke hints at anal rape. Yeah - if you are a molestation victim or the mom of a young rape victim, that's probably just hilarious.
Fenelon - I wanted to tell you I read that book "Everything happens for a reason and other lies" by Kate Bowler. Excellent book - devoured it in an afternoon. The appendix -what not to say to a cancer sufferer, is great advice for anyone dealing with a personal disappointment or tragedy.
