Breaking: A Secret Recording of a Trump Phone Call With His Lawyer Recorded Him Discussing Legal Payments to a Woman Which He Says Never Wound Up Happening

Apparently it's illegal, for some people, to pay what appears to be blackmail.

They're going to claim it's a "campaign expense" which "should have been disclosed in campaign filings." Yeah.

Meanwhile, Mueller has given yet another Hillary Clinton associate immunity, because Hillary Clinton associates are never prosecuted for crimes, only given immunity for them. Only people running against Hillary are prosecuted.

Because: How Dare They.

Fox News’s Tucker Carlson reported exclusively on Thursday night that Robert Mueller has offered Tony Podesta, the brother of a longtime friend to Hillary Clinton, immunity to testify against his business partner, Paul Manafort.

Manufacture evidence and browbeat witnesses to lie for you in open court? Check.

Imprison a man in solitary with no means of mounting a legal defense, communicating with family and supporters and have judges who are political enemies adjudicate the case? Check.

Have a history of doing this going back decades? Check.

110 It looks like at least in the charges Manafort is being prosecuted for, Podesta's legal involvement was kind of minimal, so while its crap to give immunity to people (never, ever have liked that) especially if its not critical, this isn't like they're letting the mob boss walk while busting a lieutenant.

I'm certain they worked long and hard to find a charge Podesta was minimally involved in.

This is bullshit. Trump was talking to his lawyer. That's a privileged
conversation. Trump never waived the privilege, so it can't be used
against him and Cohen should be brought up on ethics charges (at the
very least) for recording the call.

Posted by: TrivialPursuer at July 20, 2018 01:11 PM (fqUgw)

New York is a one-party consent state, so there's nothing illegal about Cohen recording his phone calls. He only crosses an ethical line if he divulges the contents of a privileged communication (or leaks the tape himself). Also, from Guiliani's statement it seems he knew this tape existed.

Those pearl clutchers did not vote for Trump in the first place. Plus, this is all just gaining him supporters from the middle who are getting disgusted with the obvious bias.

Manipulating them, yes. But not necessarily into voting for leftards.

All they need to do is convince them that the candidate is compromised, and that they will think "to vote for him would be to endorse everything he has ever done, and since there are no suitable candidates, I will simply sit out the election".

I've seen several conservative evangelicals who adopted this stance over the years. They wouldn't vote for Romney because he wouldn't support a full ban on abortion or because he was a Mormon. They wouldn't vote for Obama either, but they helped hand the country over to the Democrats for those 8 horrible years.

But as others have noted above, evangelicals have wised up and realized they are being played. They voted Trump, and he was a known quantity as regards his past.

248 Since the very, very first expression of the (ludicrous) idea that Russia!! could influence a US election, I have been saying the immediate response is obvious: Wayne County, Michigan.

That is, the integrity of US elections in many cases is close to zero. Such elections (as I have noted many times) would *not* be recognized by the US, UN, or EU as free and fair, due to lack of process integrity, in any situation where the world powers were observing/blessing elections in Third World conflict states, etc.

MI could not even conduct (the ridiculous) recount sought by Jill Green because ..... such a high% of Wayne County polling places failed the most fundamental integrity test (matching the roster to the votes tabulated).

Big thing bedeviling election integrity efforts is the constitutional allocation of process power to states (one area where the constitution is, for some reason, observed). But I've always wondered why civil rights cases can't be brought against states where election integrity is laughable, where now illegal aliens are being given the vote (diluting citizens' votes), etc.

If you look at the timing with this one and the stormy deal, if they did happen they happened the first year of Trumps marriage. In fact nothing that has come up so far that is remotely credible happened after Barron was born. I could see Trump having a bit of a mid life crisis or continuing bad habits but it would seem he made a choice when Barron was born and Melania got over that if such things did happen.

Regardless, I don't think this is going to have the effect the Dems hope it will. No Russia equals abuse of power to most moderate American's who have a sense of fairness. More actual discrediting of Mueller for any still on the fence.

Even Blitzer pointed out that Cohen has lawyers advising him what to say and do in light of him being investigated for a potential criminal case who are probably telling not to talk or post evidence. He also commented that Cohen has NOT been charged with any crimes at this point.

Yeah its a weakness on the right to think only the best of military and law enforcement. Its kind of a reaction to the endless spite and hate on the left, but it has to be tempered with reality and truth. I will in general defend cops by default because of what they have to deal with and the nature of their job but that doesn't somehow mean they never do wrong or should always be protected. Same with the military.

Its pretty damned obvious to even the dimmest intellect by this point that the federal prosecutors are bent as hell not in terms of being bought by criminals (although some are -- by the DNC) but in the sense of being willing to do whatever it takes to win, to the point of breaking the law, violating legal ethics, even doing things that get their case thrown out.

He's a BS con artist, he's one of those guys who got to where he is by lying boldly and outrageously and staying one step ahead of the people chasing him for what he did before. But its catching up with him.

Posted by: It's me donna at July 20, 2018 01:39 PM (O2RFr)

Rudy has listened to the tape, says it's two minutes long and Trump tells Cohen that if he is going to make a payment to Karen McDougal(whom Gloria Allred or other dems trotted out three months before the election, claiming she had a short affair with Trump at the Playboy mansion ten years ago) to do it with a check.

McDougal never was paid, but the National Enquirer did pay her $150,000 for the rights to her story. They then never published the story and have since released her from exclusivity.

The continuing yapping is that is also proof of election fraud as the National Enquirer owner is a friend of Trump. Known in publishing circles as "Catch and Dump". Keep McDougal from going to other news outlets with her story right before the election.

You can only push the heavily armed segment of the population (which does contain a few nut cases) so far before the smug face that was on the news last night disappears in a pink cloud speckled with brain matter while giving an interview on the street.

Part of his shtick is being super pro cop (nothing wrong with that generally).

I remember thinking he a total dumbphuck who has no idea how massive bureaucracies work. That to rise to the leadership you need drive and political skill--anything else is optional. In fact, being self interested and ruthless are common traits.

Anyone who served in or worked for a bureaucracy for any period of time knows this. The blue shirt cops of Chicago he so strongly supports know this (as you can find on the SCC cop blog). Any soldier from Vietnam who wondered why the senior military field/flag officers went along with the Mcnamara bullshit and didn't resign (with one notable exception, David Hackworth) knows this.

Of course, slo Joe apparently is fully on the anti trump train now after the Putin meeting (having previously prided himself in holding trumps feet to the fire x3 times more than he ever supported him).
