Weird News Dump

G'mornin' 'Rons & Ettes. Let's take a peek at a few things that didn't get their fair share of attention at the AoSHQ this past week.

daily-man-up-20170307-115.jpg

(A couple of people I know should drink a gallon.)

***

There was a plethora of 'weird' stories in the news this past week. Feel free to discuss these or some other stories in this open thread.

A couple of rules, if you finish the coffee please make another pot. No picking on the 'ettes, no running with sharp objects and play nice with one another.

Have a great weekend!!

5 (AP) -- Last Friday, Maine Democrat Zak Ringelstein wasn't ready to consider himself a formal member of the Democratic Socialists of America, even if he appreciated the organization's values and endorsement in his bid to become a United States senator.

Three days later, he told The Associated Press that was ready to become the only major-party Senate candidate in the nation to be a dues-paying democratic socialist.

50 Raccoon story from last night - I've got a couple french doors facing a back patio that's open to the back yard. So last night about midnight the cat (down to one now) started looking at the doors and growling, so I flipped on the patio light. There was this juvenile raccoon (smaller and quite a bit skinnier than the others I see around here) poking around the patio, and when I flipped on the light he (she?) walked right up to the french door (with me on the other side) and stood up against it, looking around inside, clearly thinking "wow that looks like a really cool place, can I come in?"

Well this REALLY pissed off the cat. She's not that big, but she doesn't put up with any other critters wanting to invade her private territory so she started hissing and spitting and even slapping the glass with her paw (with the raccoons face on the other side) So Rocky looked startled and finally ambled back off into the dark.

The pets, they're always entertaining.

The ex, as someone who was chronically late, began to use my daughter just starting her period as her excuse for being late........to me, who freaking well knew better.

"Gee Hon, I just looked, and this was your excuse a little over 2 weeks ago. Unless she is some superhuman menstrual freak of nature, something ain't right here".

Naturally the screeching then began about how dare I doubt her, blah, blah.......it was all over by then anyway, just my twisted way of having fun with her.

60 Men pretty much wore skirts throughout history until they found that riding horses required some sort of legging and shortening of the "skirt." The "skirt" became a surplice and then a jacket. Women stayed with skirts and even in the early18th century, it was considered slutty to wear pataloons because putting anything between our legs was somehow sexual.

That would be an excellent test scenario for interview candidates. Easy enough to set up. You get the last half-cup from the serving pot. Directions are right on the coffee machine, next to a full tray of supplies. The pot is opaque, so nobody will know if you make another or not. Nobody else is in the room.

Trying to be better about not spending all my time online. Also very busy, for me at least. Bought my sister's house so she and her husband can get a new house, in the same neighborhood so we'll be close to each other. Which will be great because they are becoming guardians of 5 siblings, ages 21 to 3, and I am looking forward to being an aunt and the kids are excited about finally having cousins.

Our parents are going to buy my house and move to Texas with our grandparents and an aunt in tow, so there is much excitement and activity. In a month or two we should have everything settled but I'm hoping to get to experience some of the pre-expansion content before it goes away.

I definitely look forward to running with you when you are able and I never give anyone a hard time if they aren't able since it's more important to be wise with your finances and time.

IIRC, Cannibal Bob is in the Phoenix/Valley of the Sun area. There was a mid century developer there named John F. Long, company is still around. John F. Long specialized on buying big tracts of desert and then packing in thousands of relatively small homes on very narrow lots - used every trick they could to save ground space so they could pack in more houses.

For a while back in the 80's my brother lived next to a neighbor who would never mow or water his yard, it was in one of these aging generic subdivisions, he used to call his neighbors house the John F. Long Weed Memorial Garden.

I took this tattooed Bernie-supporting girl and got her on the fence about Trump and leading prayer circles with our family. She made me respectable in more ways than I can count. Never forget that America's secret weapon is love. We can turn an enemy into a family member, something communism can never do.

Much love to all of you

132 New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu (R) has signed a controversial measure that will limit the number of college students and military personnel who can vote in state elections.

The bill, signed on Friday and a source of partisan bickering in the statehouse for years, will require registered voters be permanent residents of New Hampshire, obtain a state driver's license within 60 days of voting and register their vehicles in New Hampshire.

The new law will take effect in 2019.

New Hampshire is the only U.S. state that does not require registered voters to be permanent residents in order to cast a ballot. The rule allows thousands of college and university students who study in the Granite State to cast votes in the precinct where they live, even if they remain residents of another state, so long as they do not also vote in their home states.

People in my circles are so pessimistic that Clear McCasket is going to win in November. I have no idea why. She's nothing, a nobody, with no real personality or anything other than being the incumbent.

And she's only the incumbent because Rapin' Akin won the primary on name recognition, before he started talking about rape fairies and whatnot.

They'll send a vanilla Republican state AG up against her this fall, and he'll wipe the floor with her. And it won't matter that these twin cesspits, St. Louis and Kans Ass City will vote for her.

I woke up at the age of 11, thought...."I don't have time for this" and went off to basketball camp.

Mom found the evidence, came up to camp, took me to the bathroom and gave me some talk about blossoming that about made me want to puke.

Then, I went out and spent the next 4 hours doing dribbling and passing drills, like it was any other day.

I interviewed for a sales job, eons ago. The expectation was mostly older customers. So the interviewer starts chatting with me, going on and on about this and that. It's nice and conversational. And at some point he sorta stopped, said some nice things about me, and my listening skills... and of course I didn't get the job.

It didn't occur to me at the time, good salesmen know how to get rambling customers to get back to the topic at hand.

The homes that I have seen with attic units are usually split units. Part of the package will be outside on the ground and the part with the compressor and house fan would be in the attic with pipes connecting the two. I have never thought that would be a good way to do it. BTW, my electric bill usually runs about $300/month in the summer in July.

Yeah, interviewing can be an interesting experience. You can be very good at it, have all the skills down, know what questions are coming before the questions come, and have perfect answers...

Then say ONE thing that clangs off the rim for somebody (if it's a panel, you have a greater chance of ONE person in the room not liking it), and it can be the most off-hand comment, and poof! You're done.

In my business, there's a word that gets used a lot, and I said something about not liking the word... and even as I was saying it, feeling the breath come out of my mouth, I realized I should not have said I don't like the word.

Oh well. Next.

238 I have a 1960 house with a big "whole house fan." I'm not a fan of the fan. It's loud and doesn't do squat for humidity or allergies. Also never ever think that you can use it say, if there was smoke from a dirty oven and you also have a fire in the fireplace, say on Christmas Day. Fan pulls the smoke from the fireplace down too. Don't ask how I know.

Posted by: Vic We Have No Party at July 21, 2018 10:28 AM (mpXpK)

243 The homes that I have seen with attic units are usually split units. Part of the package will be outside on the ground and the part with the compressor and house fan would be in the attic with pipes connecting the two. I have never thought that would be a good way to do it.

Posted by: Vic We Have No Party at July 21, 2018 10:26 AM

This is not a split unit. Everything, and I do mean everything is in the attic. I'd never seen that before. Seems terribly inefficient in a late model home. Especially if no effort was made to expel hot air from attic.

I like mine ok, but it only gets used when temps are between... say, 68 and 82. Anything under, and it's too cold. Anything over, and just turn on the flippin' AC.

It's also good for letting you know where you have poorly perched breakables. Anything anywhere near the airflow will fall, and not even necessarily right away, so you'll hear a loud crash when you least expect it. Fun stuff.

Nashville is pretty excited about their hot chicken. It's basically fried chicken encrusted with hot pepper. I don't get it, but I'm not a huge fried chicken fan. They allso claim (like half the cities in the U.S), their own particular BBQ. It's pretty pedestrian. One pro tip: Nashville is experiencing growth WAY beyond what their infrastructure is capable of handling. 3:00-->7:00 p.m. is a nightmare, and NOT just highways; their surface streets are f'd too.

My parents have been to Florida a few times since, and everytime, they are miserable about the Nashville traffic.

We'll be down around the airport, so I am hoping he can avoid most of the traffic. I will be going down earlier in the day, since I have the time, so I'll hopefully avoid the rush hour part of it too. But...it will be Labor Day weekend, so...it might be rough.

Unfortunately, check in at the house isn't till 3 pm, so I'll have to kill some time, but I'd rather do that, than spend 2 hours in traffic.

I live in Nashville. Hot chicken is big here but, I don't think it's all that. There are quite a few BBQ places that are very good. Edley's ismy current favorite. Jack's is also very good. Meat and three is a big thing here. It's basically you pick from among 3-5 meat dishes and then pick three sides. Meat and three is very country kind of thing and usually very tasty. East Nashville has some pretty decent breweries. Also, there are a number of new small-batch distilleries that have opened in the area.

Trump mocked NFL commissioner Roger Goodell for failing to enact a solution and proposed his own penalties for players who refused to stand for the national anthem.

The $40,000,000 Commissioner must now make a stand, he wrote. First time kneeling, out for game. Second time kneeling, out for season/no pay!

Anyhoo, I realize I'm not being specific here, and I don't intend to. Not for any other reason than maintaining the illusion of anonymity.

It appears to have jet nozzles on the arms, so the user's hands are not free to do other things while flying. Also, they were coy about not showing the landing. If he had landed on that moored raft, and then taken off again from it, it would have been a better demo.

A flying suit and/or jetpack is not really useful in the real world unless you can start and stop a flight at will, repeatedly and reliably.
