Four Officers Of The Amsterdam Coopers' And Wine-Rackers' Guild
Gerbrand van den Eeckhout

It just occurred to me why I enjoy the Dutch masters so much; their work exudes a warmth, not necessarily from the subjects (these guys need to relax and imbibe!), but from the colors and the contrast.

By the way, my original choice for this fine morning after the storm was an El Greco depicting Christ driving the traders from the temple. I recently saw it at The National Gallery in London, and it was spectacular. But I could not find a reproduction that did it justice. Even on the museum's own website was a poor, sad facsimile of a glorious and energetic painting.

The moral of the story is: Get thee to a museum! I'm not sure why museums get such a bad rap, although it is at least in part because many of us were dragged to them as kids and were forced to treat them as cathedrals, where one speaks in hushed tones and all must be reverent at all times, worshiping at the altar of great art.

That's crap. I have had the opportunity to wander through a large number of museums around the world, often alone (the best way!), and I have found that the best way to enjoy art is to look at the stuff that piques my interest and just glance at the stuff that doesn't. So what if you don't like what the art historians say is great. The real crap has been filtered out by history and collectors over the centuries (that's why there is so much absolute shit modern art), so it's a fair bet that most of what is in the museum is going to be at the very least a reasonably good piece.

So...what caught my eye in this piece? The little mutant bat-like dog in the lower left corner. I got a chuckle out of it, then looked at the rest of the painting and immediately thought of a cobloggers meeting just before the first bottle is opened.

Art may be great, but that doesn't mean that it has to be serious. By all means look at the weird animals and finely formed racks and weird feet and cool weapons and great sunsets and strange, six-fingered hands and....

You get the point.

I cannot agree with you more, CBD. I was amazingly blessed to live and study in Paris when I was much younger than 29. After class, I would stop by the Louvre on the way home, because I found a section with Greek and Roman statuary that very few people ever bothered to look at. It was peaceful, and the carved marble was absolutely breathtaking.

I got to know the security guard who worked that section, since I was one of the very few people he ever saw (his words.) He would take the time to talk about how the museum procured those pieces, how they cared for them, and who the curators thought did the actual carving. I got amazing history lessons, just because I bothered to show up.

When you live life staring at a phone all day, it's hard to do that.

41 State-sponsored health insurance for all Marylanders such as the single-payer plan proposed by Democratic gubernatorial nominee Ben Jealous could cost $24 billion a year, forcing lawmakers to significantly raise taxes, according to a nonpartisan analysis.

Such a cost would increase the state's $44 billion operating budget by more than half.

The analysis, drafted by the state's Department of Legislative Services and released to The Baltimore Sun, said Maryland would have to levy a 10 percent payroll tax against every business and charge a $2,800 fee for every man, woman and child to pay for a new health care system in which doctors bill the state instead of private insurance companies.

43 Willowed re: Recycling

That wasn't a joke, btw. China said no more, and now the United States has absolutely no market for recyclables that were already essentially zero-market to begin with:

qz dot com -
"we used to have just one big bin at our depots, and you threw all the plastics in there, and we just baled it and shipped it to China," he said. "Now we have to sort it by the specific resin, so we have four or five bins instead of one."

For every ton of reusable plastic, China has received many more tons of random trash, some of it toxic. That has helped build "trash mountains" so high they sometimes bury people alive

---

The caring, concerned recycling advocates were having trucks drive around to collect their trash, then shipping that trash thousands of miles by f*cking boat (one of if not the biggest polluters) to be piled up in China where they either stack it up because who cares or burn it for fuel.

IIRC China burns something like 40% of their trash, btw. Poof!

Some of the best conversations I've had in a museum are with the security guards. They are there all the time, they hear all the guides talks. They are looking at the works everyday and probably think about it a lot. And they know where are hidden gems are. One guy in the Art Gallery of Ontario was able to point me to a great little exhibit of WWI posters.

The rational, efficient, and cost effective way to dispose of flammable trash (much of it, especially plastics and paper products) is to run it through a shredder, then put it in nat-gas fired furnaces, where the resulting heat of combustion is used to run steam-powered electric turbines which put electricity back on the grid. But oooh, noooo, that will make CO2 and that will make the oceans rise 200 feet and give Kevin Costner fish gills, so we can't have that.

117 New York billionaire George Soros said former President Barack Obama was his "greatest disappointment," during a wide-ranging interview with the New York Times published on Tuesday, while also appearing to distance himself from partisan politics.

The wealthy liberal donor, who was an early supporter of Obama's 2008 presidential run, told The Times that Obama was "actually my greatest disappointment," before he was reportedly prompted by an aide to clarify that he was dissatisfied on a "professional level," rather than with his presidency.

At another part of the interview, he told the paper that Obama "closed the door" on him after he secured the presidency.

Soros, who was an early supporter of Obama in 2008, said the former president was his "greatest disappointment."

"He made one phone call thanking me for my support, which was meant to last for five minutes, and I engaged him, and he had to spend another three minutes with me, so I dragged it out to eight minutes," he said.

Soros told the paper the he had hoped to have been consulted on economic and financial issues, and that Obama was known to "take his supporters for granted and to woo his opponents."

138 I was at the Cleveland Museum of Art yesterday to see this exhibit by this 92 year old Japanese woman, Yayoi Kusama, that was the most unique thing I've seen. It mainly consisted of six little rooms which one or two people enter and it had lights, mirrors and objects that gave off different sensations, like being in the center of the universe, or in a room of infinite dots or a bunch of pumpkins. At first I didn't want to go because it sounded like a bunch of latter day hippie crap for burnheads and fucksticks but it turned out to be a lot better than that and I had a great time. They had things logistically figured out to keep things moving and everybody seemed happy, so what's not to like?

142 A RUSSIAN warship called Dmitrii Donskoi carrying gold worth £100 billion has been discovered off the coast of South Korea and is believed to have sunk in a naval battle 113 years ago.

The Russian warship has been discovered off South Korea It is thought that the battle ship, which was discovered off the island of Ulleungdo, was sunken during the Russo-Japanese War and could have had the gold of an entire flotilla on board.
The Dmitrii Donskoi was an armoured cruiser in the Russian Imperial Navy's Baltic fleet which was deployed to the Pacific in the 1904-5 Russo-Japanese War.

The warship would have taken part in the Battle of Tsushima which saw Russia defeated by Japanese warships.

He is now hated and reviled because of dumb stuff he did when he was 17, because none of the people who now hate his guts ever said or did dumb stuff when they were 17. He's apologized, but of course, that doesn't matter. And then campaigned on "his healthcare" plan but said that we should ask Congress what the plan was--while adopting a fully hatched plan from lobbyists and think tanks.

In fact, they even so much as admitted that it was a rehash of the Republican Me-Too plan to compete against Hillary's plan.

Fans at the game who were wearing his jersey turned their jerseys inside out so his name didn't show. His parents, who live in Maryland, were at the game to see their son and they were shamed. He is now hated and reviled because of dumb stuff he did when he was 17, because none of the people who now hate his guts ever said or did dumb stuff when they were 17. He's apologized, but of course, that doesn't matter. 189 142 A RUSSIAN warship called Dmitrii Donskoi carrying gold worth 100 billion has been discovered off the coast of South Korea and is believed to have sunk in a naval battle 113 years ago.

222 Some of the best conversations I've had in a museum are with the
security guards. They are there all the time, they hear all the guides
talks.

Absolutely.

As a young pup I took all the money I had and went to Europe for four months. As I made my way to Florence (my first ever visit) I read Stone's The Agony And The Ecstasy, which includes a listing of places where you can see all of Michelangelo's known works. Stone recommended asking the guard at the Medici Chapel to let you downstairs to see where Michelangelo hid out during the Holy Roman Empire's invasion, and where he practiced in charcoal some drawings that were later executed in Rome at the Sistine Chapel. Nowadays it's on the regular tour and a few are let in at a time and only for a few minutes, but in those days it was just a basement room and at the whim of the guard you could sit for as long as you wanted, all alone.

The guard that day not only let me go downstairs but walked along with me for a bit and pointed out some of the best parts. Then he left me to contemplation, just me and Michelangelo's art. No ropes, no anything at all. It was the best single experience in a "museum" I've ever had.

226 I have to agree about liking the Dutch Masters with their use of light, the individual faces even when the work is not a portrait, and the detail in minor aspects. Look at the floor boards, their grain and how they are fitted together or the detail in the partial picture frame on the back wall.

As to museums, I miss them but no longer go places where I can't be armed unless there is no choice. Personal decision. Otherwise I could happily wander through the National Gallery in DC.

I wouldn't waste my time with a modern art museum if only because of the patrons, who take the joy out of the whole place. Many years ago I visited modern art exhibit that featured a Jean Miro work: "Hair Pursued by 2 Planets". A constant stream of visitors marched by, nodding as if at something profound. When I got to see it I burst out in helpless laughter which echoed through a couple of galleries. I had to sit on a bench until I got over the giggles. My girl friend was embarrassed and the patrons looked outraged but said nothing. (It helps to be the size of an NFL lineman.) All those hundreds of viewers and nobody else saw the absurdity.

Here is a good sized painting consisting of splotches of green and yellow paint, a squiggle and two black dots. The squiggle and dots were the hair and planets. I know nothing about Miro but this thing had to be a joke. If it wasn't a joke, that is funny, and pathetic, as well.

That's the last time I wasted time with a modern art exhibit.

238 The Dutch Masters did not invent portraiture, but their works during this time lifted it to a new level. Compare these guys to the two bishops we had yesterday(?). Those were pretty run-of-the-mill depictions of the subjects, and not very interesting. Some here thought they looked alike. But these guys, they are very much individuals. You have old and young and in-between. While their costume is similar, the WAY they wear them speaks to their distinct personalities.

The Holland Baroque Masters were limited in palette because of their Calvinistic theology. The artists had to find another way to make their works interesting. I'd say for the most part they succeeded.

A couple of points: ships are one of the most efficient means of transport in terms of fuel used per ton of goods transported. So not really "dirty" in terms of emissions, even if they have Diesel engines with no emission controls at all.

two, plastic is just refined petroleum, so the best way to "recycle" it would be to simply burn it as fuel in a power plant.

301 BTW, yesterday Kreplach mentioned on one of the threads the artist Mead Schaefer, a contemporary of Norman Rockwell. In fact they were friends and neighbors. I hadn't heard of him before but did some research. Schaefer was an amazing, versatile painter who seemed to use whatever style suited his need or mood. He did a number of Saturday Evening Post covers that remind me of Rockwell. Earlier in the century he did book illustrations that at first I thought were by NC Wyeth. If you are in the mood to check out a new to you artist, try Schaefer.

Thanks to Kreplach for bringing him up.

That you divide the world up into essentially your strong supporters, your leaners, your undecideds, your leaners against, and strong opponents. (there were more clever descriptive names). And the mission of your info op is to move everyone one step closer to you.

You aren't going to get your Trigglypuffs to support you, but if you can move from strong oppo to leaner, you have done something because maybe, just maybe the leaner won't go to the polls if its raining or too cold or whatever.

So, no, the propaganda isn't going to flip voters. It isn't meant to. But that doesn't mean it doesn't do anything.

Late to the party, but here goes: the Dutch are Germanic (Deutsch) people from the wooded area (Holt landt) of the Low Country (Neder landt).

In other words: the Germans were calling their lower-Rhine cousins hicks and rubes, and the Dutch adopted it and wear that shit like a badge to this day. See: "Deplorables."

When my first born was six months old, wife who is MD based upon the signs and symptoms were 98% sure kid had a brain tumor. Had to wait a week for the MRI to confirm or rebut. It was a hard week.

Turned out to not be a brain tumor. He had something else, that wasn't fatal. Has a lot of challenges but he enjoys his life and I enjoy him.
He's had over a dozen surgeries on his spine, has severe autism, but in comparison to watching him die from a brain tumor, every day since has been a gift. His siblings also have special needs. Its all good compared to what it could have been. I'm the luckiest guy I know since I don't take anything for granted.

I remember holding the little guy in my arms and thinking that there was a overwhelming probability that he was going to die from a brain tumor and thanking God for the six months I had with him up to that point and that if even if he was being taken away early I was tremendously thankful for the opportunity to be his father for that short time. A lot of guys never get that today.

It can always be worse. And someone, likely on this board has had it even worse. The whole experience turned me back to God and the greatest joy I have is going to Mass with my first born. He loves going with me. Loves it. Its hard to do for a lot of reasons I won't go into here, but when we can't make it. He reads the mass to me. Yep he can read. For a long time we thought he would never TALK.

The trust in media is at an all-time low. People believe what they want to believe. I've heard too many times before that "This thing is the thing that will finish Trump for good!" If the economy is good and (big if) the Stupid Party doesn't shoot itself in the ass too much, I think the midterms will be a big disappointment for the Dems.

501 A former undergraduate and grad student at Ohio State during the mid 90's gave an interview to the Columbus Dispatch yesterday in which he said he filed a formal letter of complaint with the university after having gone to the Student Health Center to have a lump on his chest evaluated. He was seen by Strauss and the first thing Strauss did was examine his genitals , which the student thought was extremely odd.

He then claims Strauss leaned against him and had an erection.

Nothing happened ,although Strauss left the university in 1998. Appaarently, the letter was still on file with OSU and Perkins Coie has it.

Strauss at that time was no longer with the athletic department , but was a emeritus or adjunct MD within the Student Health system.

I'm not sure why this is pertinent, but said student made sure the paper knew he was conflicted about his sexuality at the time and has since decided he is gay. He is a LGBT advocate, married a guy , etc.

He says he believes Strauss was mentally ill, but is angry that no one at OSU took his claims seriously, that they protected him, blah blah.

I bring this up because the left is going to continue to use this, along with their partners at Perkins Coie. I am not convinced that Perkins Coie didn't plant this document among the thousands of files OSU gave them after working with this guy. Would be interesting to find out his connection to them.

More attacks coming on Jim Jordan , you can bet.

Agreed with your sentiments. My "Sophie's Choice" has made it hard for me to fathom organized religion any more. I believe, but I don't expect to ever understand why I had to make the decision for my daughter that I had to make. No amount of sermons of "Why do bad things happen to good people" ease my pain/heartache, or my daughters actual physical pain. I have never found any consolation in the phrase, "Well some people have it worse, be thankful". I get it; some people have a bigger shit sandwich to eat, but it's still a shit sandwich. But it was God's path for me. Wheeeee!

Like most Americans, I enjoy about all of it. They own one of my top five works called Stone City by Grant Wood. He paints Iowa as Tuscany, and it very nearly is. Having said that, this is a terrible place with nothing to do, nowhere to go and mean farmers. Keep moving.
