Ace of Spades Pet Thread

Good afternoon Pet Lovers! Welcome to the almost world famous Ace of Spades Pet Thread. Listen to the command. Sit, relax. Good Moron.

***

A Little of This. A Little of That.

Are you happy? I mean is your pet happy?

My tortoise is always glaring at me. Whether I’m feeding him carrots, stroking his shell, or casually watching him from afar, all I get in return is his eternal stink eye.

I’ve tried my best to please Linus since spotting him at a pet store chain that shall not be named. He sat in a stuffy, glass tank under fluorescent lights, and hid in his shell when customers peered in or tapped on the glass. His food dish was almost empty, with just a few hard pellets left of commercial tortoise food. The girl working there told me these unappetizing supplements gave tortoises all the nourishment they need (for the record, that is incorrect). I decided then and there Linus was coming home with me.

Vegan diet for cats? Weigh in Horde, right or wrong?

A vegan pet owner from the Gold Coast, in Australia, has been criticized for putting his cat on a diet that matches his beliefs and claiming that she’s actually thriving after switching to veganism.

53-year-old Harry Bolman has been a vegan for the lat 38 years, and after adopting Uma, a five-year-old cat, last year, he decided that the same vegan diet would be perfect for her as well. Bolman has been feeding her vegetables and special vegan cat food, and despite accusations that he is “abusing” and “killing” the feline, he claims that plant-based food is the “healthiest” for cats.

OhCeeSamurai.jpg

OhCee the Office Cat was previously on a PetThread wearing his tie, but I wanted you to see him showing off his armor from Samurai Age. OhCee was recently diagnosed with an inoperable nasal carcinoma which has blocked his right nostril. He had his first chemotherapy treatment on Monday, but the prognosis is not good and he may only be with us for a few more months. After asking a friend for advice as to whether I am making the right decisions, she said to do what it is in your heart and don’t be afraid to talk to OhCee about it. I believe OhCee said to stop treating him like a sick cat, so my secretary and I are letting him do his usual routines, which include greeting and playing with clients (there is a drawer full of cat toys in the reception area he will point out to you). -Name not provided.

I wonder what kind of child you were, did all of your pets have wardrobes?
Sorry to hear about your pet's condition. Here's hoping the treatments go well!

A month or so ago, you posted my two adorable Puggle sister fosters, Palani and Pernelle. They just completed heartworm treatment and were supposed to be adopted tomorrow (July 14). Unfortunately, out of the blue, Pernelle started regurgitating her food. I took her to the vet Monday morning and she has been diagnosed with Megaesophagus. It was a crushing diagnosis, but she has been doing really well. Here she is in the special chair she uses to eat. It’s called a Bailey Chair and a volunteer made it for her. Prayers for health and an adopter willing to care for a dog with this condition.
Happy Caturday (I also foster cats and have 8 (!) at the moment) I always enjoy the Pet Thread. - Debbie

Tough condition, but we have a Setter with it who is going on 12. Good luck with your fostering and thank you for the work you do.

Beautiful on Green.jpg

Dogzilla.jpg

Hi,
We are longtime readers/lurkers Robyn and Billy, deep behind the lines on the central coast of California, in a little agricultural town on the coast right between LA and SF.

This is our baby girl Ruby, a beautiful Dane/Mastiff mix. We lost her to old age on May 15th of this year. She was the best dog...not our first, but most definitely the best. We rescued her 61/2 years ago after she'd been abandoned by her prior owners, left in the backyard, neighbors feeding her over the fence when they realized what had happened. We are convinced she remembered that trauma. As time passed she wouldn't stay in the backyard if we left the house. She always found a way past the fence (chewing through it sometimes), only to be found laying on the front lawn waiting for us to return. Towards the end we just never left for more than a few hours, leaving her inside the comfort of HER house.

I love the Dogzilla photo, so indicative of life with a big dog! At just over 100 lbs, all she had to do to get attention was stand in your way and demand to be loved. Or sit right next to you and lean on you. As long as we were home, she loved her yard. I always thought she looked beautiful on green.

She's left a huge hole in our hearts. See you on the other side, baby girl.

Thanks for your column. Keep up the good work.

What a beautiful dog. It is easy to see how see has left a hole in your world. Thanks for sharing with us.

Ace of Spades longtime lurker's (TheCentralScrutinizer) mutts. Sam is a 4-year old Aussie/Newf /Greyhound mix. We recently picked up Spot from a local shelter here in the Omaha area. He was saved from an Oklahoma kill shelter and brought to Nebraska. They're both dumb as a bag of hammers but great family members.

A typical Saturday evening for a moron and his dogs. We hadn't even cracked open the first beer yet:

Edit: Forgot to mention that Spot is about a year old and a Pointer/Pit mix, we think.

Thanks TheCentralScrutinizer. It appears that you have a pair of wrestlers on your hands. The last photo suggests no mischief will take place in your home.

So true. I remember when my wife decided to rearrange the living room furniture. (I voted no, but that didn't count. Toxic femininity at work.)

At every turn, the dog was just as helpful as can be. Wife sweeps up dog hair from every exposed nook and cranny; dog lies down in the pile. Getting the rug aligned; she immediately saw that her role was sitting in the middle of the carpet while we were trying to move it. I think that, every time I was told where to move a chair or table, there she was, right in the way.

And putting up a Christmas tree with a dog helping should be made a competitive sport.

If that makes it sound as if we don't miss her; you're wrong. Miss her terribly. If my wife's health improves, we'll need another.

First clue for the clueless vegetarians/vegans is that cats in the wild eat nothing but meat. You will never see a feral cat messing with your vegetable garden (unless they happen to be chasing a prey animal through it).

Only monstrous assholes put cats or dogs on vegan diets. They're small predators; when feral they hunt game or forage for carrion.
This is what lack of protein in the diet does to cognition. When the war's over, the vegans will be sent to the fields to hoe turnips.

Committed vegans will not use shellac on wood because it's made from insect secretions; will not wear jewelry that contains pearls, mother of pearl, coral, abalone shell, or any other substance that comes from animals; will not go to rodeos, which they consider a form of animal exploitation; and will not use any soap made with animal fat. Yeah, they're a real fun group.

94 I've seen so many articles from vets regarding idiots trying to feed their cats vegan diets. Dogs can get away with a fair amount of it, but it's pretty much a death sentence for a cat.

I've not heard of any combination of black bean/rice/tofu whatever that's been hit on that will fool a cat's digestive system into thinking it's eating meat. They're carnivores, not opportunistic. It's bad enough these people are killing their kids by not letting their brains get enough protein and fat growing up.

But since I'm a dog person - sure, feed your cat gluten free tuna-free substitute food product. He'll thank you for it.

I figure the biomass attributable to dinosaurs is an infinitesimal fraction of all of the biomass on life on Earth since the first self-replicating molecules formed. The vast majority of it would probably be ocean-based plankton and plant matter, not dinosaurs.

And in yesterday's Houston KC show Miss Carmen was Best Veteran and Best Owner-handled Borzoi. At 10 1/2, this was her last show and she had a blast, dancing at the end of the leash like a puppy. The applause the spectators give to veterans was not just polite but enthusiastic for Carmencita. Later she was third in the Owner-handled Hound Group. Quite a finish!

Reminds me of our kittens. We had them confined to the kitchen temporarily after their neutering so they wouldn't rub their yucky butts on the carpet. There was no kitchen door, so we erected a large appliance box in the doorway that blocked the lower six feet, leaving only about a foot gap at the top. We were sitting in the living room and suddenly a kitten came sailing over the cardboard blockade. A few seconds later, his brother flew over.

So much for kitty confinement.

A bit of nostalgia this week. A mini-red dachshund was our family pet when I was growing up.We adopted her from the local pound when I was seven and she lived another 15 years. I will always have a soft spot in my heart for doxies.

Guinevere looks so much like one of our first poodles, Argyle. I've told the story before about how he went blind at 4 years old but lived another happy 8 years. He was one of the sweetest animals ever born and heaven was being on Mrs. JTB's lap while getting his appropriate amount of petting. And, blindness be damned, he had no problem jumping up on furniture, finding his food and water bowls, or knowing where the stairs began and ended.

So far it seems the only damage is my loss of 10 oz or so of perfectly good bacon.

I've had similar thoughts before. If PETA truly thought animals and humans were equivalent ("a frog is a rat is a dog is a boy" - Newkirk) then they'd want to put a stop to all carnivorous activity. So coming up with a way to prevent carnivores from being carnivorous is consistent with their philosophy. Of course , if you could cause all carnivores to disappear it would be an ecological nightmare.

213 50 Cat meets Raccoon story from last night - I've got a couple french doors facing a back patio that's open to the back yard. So last night about midnight the cat (down to one now) started looking at the doors and growling, so I flipped on the patio light. There was this juvenile raccoon (smaller and quite a bit skinnier than the others I see around here) poking around the patio, and when I flipped on the light he (she?) walked right up to the french door (with me on the other side) and stood up against it, looking around inside, clearly thinking "wow that looks like a really cool place, can I come in?"

Well this REALLY pissed off the cat. She's not that big, but she doesn't put up with any other critters wanting to invade her private territory so she started hissing and spitting and even slapping the glass with her paw (with the raccoons face on the other side) So Rocky looked startled and finally ambled back off into the dark.

The pets, they're always entertaining.

Thank you. I love that song, and yet, without the link, I would have been lost. Feeling double stupid now...which is pretty much a weekly thing at Ace for me. Gotta laugh...after the cringing is over.

Hah! So I'm not the only one who noticed that. I tried to figure it out..but my mind kept bringing up South Park Cartman images, which is of no help whatsoever.

247 Love the Malinois. I love all dogs but have a weakness for serious working dogs like that - GSDs, Dobermans, Malinios. I've had a few GSDs and Dobermans, have a GSD now, and I've always felt that they would die for me no matter what, and I reciprocate.

Oh, I'm laughing at self...of course, now I have to look up pobrecita. I'm guessing it has something to do with a big nose and a platypus.

Nah, it just means "poor thing/poor dear". It can be used for varying degrees of concern from grandmotherly to "your discomfiture amuses me a little, but I do hope you cheer up".

252 Must be a Missouri thing. My husband used to think that dogs belonged outside. Period. He might still feel that way, but our 80 pound Lab lives indoors and he worries about it being too hot or cold for her to be left out for an hour or two.

I think it's more of rural Midwestern rural thing. My Dad grew up on a farm and didn't think dogs belonged inside. Mom was a Midwestern town girl and convinced him eventually to let the dogs stay inside.
