The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

“Socialism only works in two places: Heaven where they don't need it and hell where they already have it.” Ronald Reagan

Quote II

“The frustrating thing is that those who are attacking religion claim they are doing it in the name of tolerance, freedom and openmindedness. Question: Isn’t the real truth that they are intolerant of religion? They refuse to tolerate its importance in our lives.” Ronald Reagan

Quote III

“America is, and always will be, a shining city on a hill.” Ronald Reagan

*****

Before taking his own life, Anthony Bourdain gave a wide ranging interview. Including his thoughts on Bill & Hillary.

“Bill Clinton, look, the bimbo eruptions—it was f---ing monstrous. That would not have flown today. [Bill Clinton is] a piece of s---. Entitled, rapey, gropey, grabby, disgusting, and the way that he — and she [Hillary] — destroyed these women and the way that everyone went along, and, and are blind to this!”

Microsoft has helped innovate facial recognition software. Now it's urging the US government to enact regulation to control the use of the technology.
In a blog post, Microsoft (MSFT)President Brad Smith said new laws are necessary given the technology's "broad societal ramifications and potential for abuse."

He urged lawmakers to form "a government initiative to regulate the proper use of facial recognition technology, informed first by a bipartisan and expert commission."

Elon Musk, Tesla, hit one milestone.

Looks like he is hitting another one.

In a series of tweets responding to Unsworth’s criticism, Musk referred to Unsworth’s “British expat guy who lives in Thailand” as “sus” (suspicious) and said he had never seen him at the cave complex. Musk challenged Unsworth’s accounting of the water levels in the cave, then got even angrier, explicitly calling Unsworth a “pedo guy” and saying he would prove the device’s utility by, uh, sending more people into the cave with it.

Government, universally inept.

The Canadian Army’s newest radar system can’t be linked in to NATO’s air defence networks but the military says it won’t cancel the project worth more than $200 million.

The Canadian Army is just now taking delivery of the first Israeli-built radars which are expected to be declared operational by the end of the summer.

But the Czech military has put on hold its deal for the same radars after NATO informed it the systems couldn’t be used because the equipment was built by a non-alliance member and couldn’t be integrated into NATO systems.

Iraq War veteran Leonard Cottrell Jr. knows his Constitutional rights, so he’s not going to let anyone confiscate his guns without a proper warrant and due process.

Cottrell, a disabled Army veteran who served three tours during “Operation Iraqi Freedom,” was working at a New Jersey Wawa store on June 14 when his wife called him to say that police officers were at their home demanding to seize his guns. The cops did not have a search warrant.

A 3-year-old girl is being hailed a hero for using FaceTime to call for help after her father had suffered a heart attack at home

Trevor McCabe, 27, was at home with his daughter Molly on the Fourth of July when he suffered a stroke. Molly used her dad's phone to call her mom at work using FaceTime.

"She did a FaceTime call, and she was so brave, and she told me that daddy got sick, and she showed me where daddy was, and so I saw him lying on the ground," Molly's mother, Devon McCabe told NBC News.

That was terrible. Just horrible violence. That brutal chair-jab. The way that one guy kept jumping in and pounding. How more big guys kept piling on like it was a major-league football tackle.

My prayer for you though sir, is that the years between now and then bring you across the finish line as a celebrant and victorious, rather than as a permanent mourner, broken, spent and withered.

You've got a couple-three decades ahead, wherein ass must be kicked, horizons must be crossed, and most importantly, the elixir of Human Friendship must be quaffed frequently, deeply and with gusto.

Posted by: Bitter Clinger at July 16, 2018 10:35 PM (fSpWn)
That's kinda the risk you take when you go off with a stranger to have sex. I didn't skank around in bars when I was young because I'm not a skank, but I knew women who thought nothing of picking up guys in bars and taking them home or going to their place. And I used to say, "How the hell do you know he's not some psycho?" "Oh, he seemed nice..." Like you can get a good read on somebody after a half hour of shouting in his ear at a bar. Ted Bundy seemed nice too.
I had a friend in college whose roommate brought some guy home with her. He didn't rape or beat her or slice her up. He just waited until she fell and then robbed both her and her roommate blind. Took their wallets, cash jewelry, an expensive camera...My friend was as furious with her roommate for bringing the guy home as she was with the thief himself.

194 Hey everybody. Could use a little advice tonight.

Long story short: I'm fed up with my family. This summer, I finally have the wherewithal to take a short vacation at Morongo, which I believe I've told you all about. Part of the reason I want to go there, is because they have a 'lazy river' pool that my niece and nephew absolutely loved, when we first visited there about five years ago. (The niece and nephew are now 13 and 17, btw.)

Anyway, I've had to postpone the thing TWICE now because just when we get near the date to go, my family members suddenly always come up with reasons why they either can't go, or at best can't stay the entire two nights. (And again, just *two* nights. I'm not insisting we stay at this place for a week.)

Anyway, only a week away from my first postponed date, I now just had to change it again. So now it's three weeks away again. And I am more or less convinced that said family members will become slippery again and there will be problems with the *new* dates to go. Unfortunately the dates I just set are the *last* dates/times it'll be likely I can still even host this vacation.

So part of me is wondering what I should do, should family back out on me again. Go by myself? Cancel and just go to Pechanga on my own? Save the money and plan for something bigger and better, BY MYSELF, next year?

But it's so frustrating I can't depend on my family. When my sisters or their husbands make plans, THEY STAY MADE. When *I* make plans, no one can come and I always have to change everything over and over again. I don't feel respected, to say the least.

Anyway thanks for the rant, and any advice is welcomed.

195 I'm not sure that the ends never justify the means. Given a dire enough scenario they probably do; sometimes outcomes are bound to matter more than process. I don't really trust us to be clear-sighted and disinterested enough to know when this is the case though.

I've thought about that phrase a lot over the years, and I realize that there is one big exception to the rule that we all recognize, even if we feel kind of ashamed to admit.

The ends DO justify the means when survival, of yourself of those who you are sworn to protect, are at risk. Not just well being, or an advantage, but the real Life and Death situation. That's why police can shoot to kill, that's why you are justified in using deadly force in self defense, that's why the US was justified in using 2 nuclear weapons to end WW2.

When survival is truly on the line, then yes, the ends do justify the means. But only when survival is truly on the line.

Yeah, but I don't see that as a morally ambiguous scenario or even legally ambiguous.

It would be harder to justify, in my mind, eliminating a theorized, potential threat that might be dealt with in various legal ways.

231 I felt her get up and get out of bed, but kept my
eyes closed. About 15 seconds later, I opened them a little and saw her
with my pants in her hand, about to go through the pockets. Cleared my
throat loudly, and she about crapped herself. Started stammering about
how she was looking for a pen to write me a note, as she was leaving.

So, watched her get dressed, escorted her to my door, closed and locked it. No idea how she got home, didn't care.

Not exactly my most shining moment of brilliance.

315 Two local radio guys recently had segmnts where they read responses from listeners they had asked for stories about their worst vacations ever. The replies were horrific but also entertaining (if you weren't the one who had to suffer though the vacation.) One I remember was a woman who went on a vacation with her grandpa when she was 10. He was on some sort of meds for intestinal problems but that didn't keep him from buying a whole box of eclairs and eating most of them in one sitting. Then he crapped his pants and had his granddaughter wash out his khakis and underwear in the hotel sink. I was laughing like hell, and also wondering what the hell kind of grandpa does that. At any rate, I've had some miserable vacations, but I never had to wash someone else's poop out of their underwear, so it's all good.

317 His idea of fun was seeing how much distance we could canoe each day.

We had a canoe camping tradition when my kids were young and the marriage was falling apart. By we, I mean I and a fishing buddy and his family.

One year it was me and the boys and their family, the next my wife joined us for half of it, the next it was both full families the whole time.

Oddly, that last trip was the most awkward. Aleksandar's (that's a made up but accurate name) idea of canoe camping was to break camp first thing in the morning and see how much river we could cover before twighlight.

Nancy's (that's her real name) idea was to paddle around and look at the beavers and hey isn't it nice to be on the water.

My task was to hold these two poles together.

----

Yep. I was reluctant to try it because it seemed like hippie dippie shit, and it's kinda expensive. Wasted a lot of time in needless pain.

The THC/CBD seems to work best. But the THC stuff does pack a (mild) buzz, so you don't want to use it at work, or if you have a job with UAs. CBD-only is nearly as effective though.

If you're in the Denver area, check out Greenfield's at Mississippi and Raritan. It's in the hood, but everything they sell is ridiculously cheap. Most places sell my brand for 45 but they do it for 30.

I've been through similar. My SIL always has to insert drama.

I balance it this way, I schedule vacation with mom and my sis and BIL and their kids, as well as taking SIL and bro's son with me. If they want to come, great. If they flake, great. But I always take the nephew (I like to make sure he gets to fish every year, because my brother won't take him).

If they schedule something, I make time to go with them as well.

420 Is the real reason for what the FBI/DOJ has done and is doing what CNN is now calling for; an actual physical coup with the knowledge that the public have been saturated with negative press about Trump for 2 years and will thus be looked on as a good thing?

There's been enough collusion with the press by the FBI/DOJ and Other IC for this to have been generated from the top. I'm sure the press needed little encouragement.

I can only say that if they did I think that would be the start of the 2nd Civil War.

Not like it's been speculated as a war between political parties but a direct clash between the Forces Controlled from DC against outraged citizens.

This makes a scary amount of sense. Guesses who they would put forth as Leader of the US?

Reminds me of when I was a teen and my grandmother, who was quite cantankerous and argumentative, would eat supper with us fairly often. My father was often the target of her criticism, but he put up with it bravely and stoically. BUT I could make him spit out his food and snort occasionally, since I had mastered the trick of giving a nasty reply in a voice just loud enough for him to hear, but too low for her older ears to catch. And then when she would say "Huh? What? What did you say?" then I'd just say loudly "Oh I said you were exactly right, grandma!!!"

It got to be quite the game. Made dinner entertaining.

Donna, the "gay guy" dragged behind a boat in the Onion story was waterskiing. The Onion just took pics of a guy having fun waterskiing and , and worked up a "dragging" story around it. Wonderful trolling on their part.

Hey! I "dragged" people behind my dune buggy, and in turn, got dragged myself. We were at Long Beach on Vancouver Island (before it became a National Park where you can't have fun), and driving it on the beach. We found an old sheet of plywood, made some holes in it, and hitched to the back bumper of my dune buggy with some rope. and made a rope bridle for the standing rider to hang onto. It was hard as hell to stay upright on it. The drag on the sand was pretty bad, and the rope would stretch. Then we'd hit the shallow water, and the board would shoot ahead, and tumble you off. But we had fun, for sure. And nobody else can do that there, anymore, because National Park. One of the fortunate few.

487 AmercanKestrel: thanks and I agree.

What's just so frustrating is, what they oftentimes choose instead of doing stuff with me. I can't tell you how many times I've tried to make plans with my sister, for instance. She'll say yes, then 24 hours ahead cancel. And why? Often times, because someone she *barely knows from work* wants to see her for some get-together (she's a grade-school teacher), or a neighbor (whom she also barely knows) asks her to do something at the same time.

It just never enters her (or others) heads that maybe they could say to these people, just once, "no, I'm sorry, I've already made plans with my brother." Although it's rare, I have done that for them, that is, tell people no because I have family plans.

But as I said: for some reason, if my mom, sister or a bro-in-law say "we're eating out on Sunday at 6pm at Domenico's"?? Guess what? We're all there on Sunday at 6pm at Domenico's. But if I propose the same thing, it'll get postponed at least twice before anyone finally can make the time to join me. Just beyond frustrating.

And although I admit it's a bad reason, it's another thing I kinda wish about having a girlfriend. I wish I could tell my family "gee, I'm sorry, me and my girlfriend are going out that night!" They know I most likely won't stand up to them, because they know I have no choices, other than (a) wait for them or (b) do everything alone.

My dad harumphed, and she said "oh, come off it... I've enjoyed everything I've seen him in!"

Before I could stop myself, "Yeah? Does that include lingerie?"

Arizona in July is not Convertible weather.

Something with a reliable Air Conditioning System, at least.

With Cloth upholstery, too. Not leather, and dear GOD, not Vinyl !!! +++ !

Addendum. Classic "Euro" classics have AC systems which did not anticipate climatic conditions in the Southwest and Gulf-Coastal United States.

Horsepower and cooling system BTUs are not correlated in those vehicles.

Choose, wisely.

That's what got me. Being divorced, when I flew to my Mom's, they then expected ME to drive the hour to visit THEM. Hey, 'tards, it's my vacation. I spent money on air fare to travel this far, you want to see me, here I am (or was). It simply never dawned on them how they put me out or, worse, it did dawn on them and they simply didn't give a shit because I was single and it was 'easier' for me to go to them. That's one reason why I dropped them. They couldn't understand that maybe I didn't want to drive Mom's car that hour and instead hang out with her. I finally got fed up with their arrogance. Of course, they thinking themselves perfect and saw nothing wrong with their actions didn't help matters any, either.

Please to be not nuking Nicaragua. Daniel Ortega claims to be Socialist (it's on billboards all over, there), but really, he's not. Just your basic pragmatic dictator, and neither the best of his kind, nor the worst. Actual Sandinistas that I met, they call him "Somoza Lite".

The country muddles through, and the people there are quite charming. And, AFAIK, Nicaragua's contribution to the flood of illegal aliens plaguing the USA is minuscule, compared to the other players.

578 And I made a big strides on my project of the day, a stand for my found table saw. Found a Ridgid saw stand at the dump. "Flaccid" would have been a better name, as it was all flopadopalous. But I hammered the bent pieces straight, and bolted it all back together, put a slab of 3/4" plywood on top to support the saw, and hacked 9 inches off the legs. Put a set of pneumatic wheels under the front legs, and adjustable screw pads under the rear ones. With the saw bolted onto it, and sitting on a concrete floor, it is now rock-solid.

I am going to add a drawer to catch sawdust, and some handles to trundle it with. And make the handles do double duty by acting as supports for an out-feed roller.

Unfortunately, they'll never change and never understand your frustration with them, either. This is one of those 'continue to take their shit, swallow it and like it' or 'walk away and leave their shit behind you' choices.

I have two, or maybe three, great nephews or nieces, not sure which, whom I've never met nor ever will. Oh well.

An example: One time when I was in my early 20s and still going to college, my early thirty-something brother found my quart of Black Jack Daniels. He drank the whole thing down to within a literal half-inch of its life, only to apologize and replace it with a fifth of Green Jack. Hey, asshole, you've got the real job, replace what you drink.

Like I said, a long litany of bullshit that they gloss over because they're perfect and I'm only 'the baby brother'.

Good luck with whatever decision you make. But whatever decision it is, make it for YOU, not them. Life's too short to be surrounded by family assholes making your life miserable.

A Hallmark moment my family is not.

Big Left is currently in Hyperventilating Frenzy #729, in which they are currently hallucinating that Trump committed treason and enslaved the US to Russia yesterday, when he said that Putin was more trustworthy than Obama's leftover appointees in the Intelligence Community. "Kompromat" is Soviet-speak for "blackmail-worthy secrets" about a politician, which they are suggesting that Putin must have on Trump.

It's very quizzical, these constant Hyperventilating Frenzies they suffer from, as the invariably are internally contradictory and make no sense and have no "narrative consistency." The "Putin is blackmailing Trump" fantasy bluntly contradicts all their previous anti-Trump fantasies.

The left and the Dems need to be bitchslapped so, so, SO hard in the midterms and in 2020, they can't ever even get up again without begging for mercy. And Repubs need to learn to make things extremely painful for Dems from here on out. (Hey, I can dream.)

621 The most interesting thing about stupid criminals is that they think alibis and excuses are additive, such that the more alibis and excuses they dream up, the more innocent they will appear to be. Interrogations often go like this:

Police: "We have solid evidence that you committed this murder. Do you have anything to say in your defense?"

Stupid criminal: "Yes I do! First of all, I was in Brazil when the shooting happened, so it couldn't be me. Second of all, my momma says she was playing gin rummy with me the whole time, so I got an alibi. Third of all, my gun jammed, so how could I have fired the fatal shot? Damn gun wasn't even working. Also, for the record, I've never owned a gun. Furthermore, you can't prove the bullet came from my gun, because I threw it in the river and you'll never find it. And most importantly, the bitch asked for it, so it wasn't my fault! She stole my stash! She deserved it, so killing her ain't no crime. And lastly, it was self-defense, because she shot me first, right in my heart. Oh yeah, and it was an accident. The gun went off by itself -- I swear! So, you see how I am totally 100% innocent, because I got eight different ways to show I'm not guilty."

In a similar vein, the leftists think that anti-Trump conspiracy theories are also additive, even though (as in the example with the criminal) the multiple accusations flatly contradict and negate each other, and thus in toto add up to nothing. It goes like this:

"Russia HACKED the election, thus it was invalid. Also, Trump's victory proves that America is populated by ignorant rednecks who all voted for him, thus confirming that this is a racist country filled with racists. Also, Hillary actually beat Trump, so he lost. Did we mention that Trump colluded with Putin because they are in cahoots? Also, Putin is blackmailing Trump, and Trump cowers in fear that Putin will expose him and ruin him. Also, they are best friends. Also, Trump is a big bully who'd a mean dictator. Furthermore, he's a flabby weak loser who lets Putin totally PWN him. In addition, Trump is a blindly patriotic nationalist who doesn't understand the nuances of globalism. And at the same time, he's an anti-American traitor who sold us out to Russia. Did we mention that Trump is broker than he wants to admit, but is also morally corrupt because he's so rich? And that he has incest with his daughter, and is also impotent, and also has sex with any woman he wants? Most importantly, Russia bought a Facebook ad and guessed some guy's password, which is worse than Watergate and WWII combined. So, as you can see, Trump must be impeached."

Funny thing is, Joe Crowley, beaten in the primary, is still on the ballot under the Working Families Party. The socialist ditz has complained about that. What it means is Crowley could retain his seat or the Dems split the vote giving the election to Pappas, the first Republican to run in the 15th CD in over a decade.

681 I am still a little confused by what is causing all of this "Trump is a traitor" talk.

Obama did exactly the same thing when he sent hillary to Russia with the reset button. He was trying to get Russia to be an ally and not an adversary, exactly the same thing Trump is trying to do.

Additionally obama refused for months to say a single word about the alleged russian meddling in our election, and when he finally did say something he just told putin to "knock it off" and he pitched a dozen or so embassy people out of the Country. If what Russia allegedly did during the election did was an "Act of War" as I am reading on various websites this morning, shouldn't obama have done a wee bit more to Russia?

He also had rice tell the anti-Russian cyber attack team to stand down and disbanded them during the summer of 2016 when this was all allegedly going on why would he do that if his Intelligence Community was telling him that Russia was interfering in the election?

It's almost like history for the left doesn't exist.

Not as far as I can tell. So far Pappas has no campaign headquarters or even a website because I want to volunteer for his campaign. So I tried calling the Queens GOP HQ and their phone rings and rings and rings, with no one picking up. Then I went on the Queens GOP HQ website last week and entered my info to volunteer but still no return phone call.

The GOP is less than useless in NY. Considering they have a chance to pick up that seat, it's a friggin' disgrace.

This is the first time in over a decade there is a Republican on the ballot though you'd never know it by the lack of effort I've seen so far.

What happened yesterday in Helsinki is a serious situation that really needs to be resolved.

We had an American President, rightly so, take the word of a foreign power over the word of his LE and IC apparatus, a foreign power that for the last 75 years has been designated as our greatest Geo-political foe.

Our LE, IC and political establishment of both parties have coalesced around and fixed the narrative that the Russians interfered in the 2016 election and this interference aided the current President.

The current President essentially said his LE and IC were wrong, compromised and politicized, on foreign soil no less, he also attacked his Presidential rival and the Democrats.

This is a lot more serious a situation than people realize.

Trump has been the most conservative, forthright and honest politician in the history of this country.

However, the fact that a sitting President cannot trust his LE and IC apparatus, an apparatus that was and is conspiring to take him down is a problem.

A. Huge. Fucking. Problem.

A problem that cannot be solved through executive action and a problem that will not be solved through legislative action.

I hope she has built herself a pill box to fend off all of the incoming fire, as she is directly over the target.

Good morning, Beckoning. Nice to see you. Did I see you say you had a YouTube channel? Would you mind posting the link if you do? I've heard you're an amazing artist.

725 @710

The Awan travesty is what finally made me realize that all is pretty much lost in terms of bringing any of the conspirators to justice and the restoration of a single rule of law.

Here we had essentially a foreign spy ring operating out of the Democrats IT department and he simply skated.

Not only did he skate all of his conspirators got immunity and he got immunity from further prosecution and to add insult to injury the "prosecution" recommended no jail time.

Contrast this treatment with the treatment of Manefort, Popodopous, Flynn, Cohen and it is clear we have a huge fucking problem with malicious prosecution of some and kid glove treatment for others.

We have a huge problem.

726 Roger Simon has an article worth reading over on PJ Media. He says that the Putin summit may be Trump's finest hour.

Judging from the excessive overreach and Kangaroo Court yesterday, he may well be correct.

728 It was nice to read the McCarthy article wherein he excoriated Mueller and Rosenstein. Their little recent trick to indict the 12 Russians has essentially covered them with the presumption of innocence as our legal system demands. Without a proper trial there is no way the DoJ will be able to prove them guilty.

BTW, does anyone know the status of the Concord trial? Supposedly there was a court date proceeding on July 9th.

Putin:

President Trump, when he was a candidate, he mentioned the need to restore the Russia-U.S. relationship. And it’s clear that certain parts of American society felt sympathetic about it, and different people could express their sympathies (ph) in different ways.

But isn’t that natural? Isn’t it natural to be sympathetic towards a person who is willing to restore the relationship with our country, who wants to work with us?
