Open Thread: Die Hard Turns 30

Interesting piece about the novel Die Hard was based on. Nothing Lasts Forever was a sequel to The Detective, which itself was made into a movie starring Frank Sinatra as the titular detective.

The sequel was literally dreamed up when the writer fell asleep while watching the Towering Inferno. Sinatra was too old to reprise the role by then, so the name was changed from "John Leland" to "John McClane" and offered to Arnold Schwarzenegger, who turned it down.

A bit of trivia you probably already know: the scene where Hans, pretending to be "Bill Clay," meets John McClane wasn't in the original script. They only wrote that sequence after hearing Rickman's version of an American accent. And maybe after realizing that it's, what's the word, insane to never have the hero meet the villain face-to-face until the final confrontation.

I've seen them talk about Rickman's "American accent;" they claimed it was "great." I guess they mean it was hilariously bad? Seriously, he does not sound American at all. I guess it's funny but it kind of makes McClane look pretty dumb for even pretending along with this nonsense.

Regarding Die Hard With a Vengeance: You probably know this, but the reason the ending of that film was choppy and look like it was a rush-job filmed only an afterthought is because it was a rush-job filmed only as an afterthought. In the original version of the movie, "Simon" actually escapes after the cargo ship detonation. Only three years later would we see McClane finally track down Simon and confront him.

That original ending can be seen here.

It's not good. So both endings of that otherwise-good movie are bad.

One important legacy of Die Hard: A young British author was inspired by the sight of McClane's barefoot heroics to write his own story of barefoot heroics. That author? JRR Tolkien. "The Hobbit" was conceived as "Reverse Die Hard in a Mountain," another "siege" action-thriller, with the dwarven crew of thieves as the heroes and the dragon, a scaly Mr. Nakatomi trying to guard his loot, as the villain.

"The Hobbit" was also made into a movie, cashing in on the popularity of Die Hard.

Well Merkel's stasi criminals are corrupt, but who blew up the trade center buildings and what was being covered up? (or the OK city building, same questions) ...

or, who blew up our FBI/CIA to cover up the Clinton crime syndicate ... ? The Soviets got the "destroy America" ball rolling, but who are the real crooks now?

I hope when Trump gets back from meeting with Putin he fires Rosentstein for trying to embarrass him and playing politics.

Hopefully someone asks Putin about these preposterous charges.

If I were Putin I would say the following...

"These charges are baseless and malicious.

If
the so called Department of Justice would like to proceed with this
farce, my administration will call for a hearing in the General Assembly
of the UN, there the so called Department of Justice will make a
presentation of the evidence they have collected, I will send legal
emissaries to listen and ask questions of the so called prosecutors and
investigators of the so called Department of Justice.

If the
presentation and cross examination shows compelling evidence that
Russian citizens committed these alleged crimes, I will personally
deliver them to the US authorities for trial."

I bet Roesenpenis balks at that scenario.

This is all a multi-act production of The Aristocrats.

Seeing the sidebar mention of the Iroquois lacrosse team, I looked up lacrosse and hurling on Wikipedia. Hurling has been played in Ireland since ancient times, while lacrosse was played by the Iroquois in North America and predates the European discovery.

The two sports seem oddly similar. Could this be evidence of contact centuries before the Age of Exploration? There is an Irish legend of St. Brendan discovering lands to the west which predates Leif Erickson and the Vikings.

Ditto.
I actually had a couple of lib guys who had come around to W. They were impressed with how he handled 9/11, and other stuff.

Bush's second term was hell. Heard a lot of grief. After Obama was elected, I didn't show my disdain for the Socialist with No Life Experience. The politics talk decreased. Then, and I remember it clearly, got a long text in the early summer of 2016. Hey, LeftCoast, how about that Trump? I responded positively, and a slew of nasty crap, which we are now all familiar with, texted back. Guess he had been hanging out with his political buddies, all of which are Lefties.

Continued that way throughout the campaign. And yes, I did have fun on the evening of Nov 8, 16. But it got ugly and never changed. One of these guys, he later let on, got a lot of his info from Rachael Muncher. Seriously, he would try to use the stuff he saw on her show to be factual.

I tried a couple of times to have conversations that were fact based, but it was useless.

To this day, I get crap about Russia-Putin-Stormy-etc-etc-etc. I've quit responding. I do send a meme once in a while. But the conversations are over. And that is sad.

Sergeant Al Powell's mistake with the kid leads him to doubt himself, until he is visited by terrorists on Christmas eve and learns to kill again without hesitation.

How is that not a valuable lesson about the True Meaning of Christmas?

Well, if Die Hard or the Hobbit are ever remade with female leads, Tarantino should definitely be in the director's chair. He could show the female hobbits getting a shave along with their pedicure.

The modern day FBI with cellular technology is still incompetent, see Las Vegas, Florida School Massacre, Pulse Night Club, San Bernadino, etc.

You can literally tell the FBI straight up, these brothers are bad news, you might want to keep an eye on them.

Joel Silver, the producer of Die Hard, saw Rickman in London when he played the original Valmont in les liaisons dangereuses. Silver thought he was so good in that role that he offered him the role of the villain in Die Hard.

Ironically, he never got to play Valmont in the movie - that part, of course, went to John Malkovich.

Tolkien started writing what would become The Silmarilion during WW1. When he couldn't get any of it published(too dark) he wrote The Hobbit in the same general setting. A big success. Then he tried again to get the Silmarilion stuff published, and they said no, we want more hobbit stuff. So he wrote The Lord of the Rings, again in the same setting but with more connections to the Silmarilion stuff. With the success of the LotR they finally published the Silmarilion after his death.

Survival of the richest: the wealthy are plotting to leave us behind https://cnb.cx/2JeezuB

I did like this part however:

The Event. That was their euphemism for the environmental collapse, social unrest, nuclear explosion, unstoppable virus, or Mr. Robot hack that takes everything down.

This single question occupied us for the rest of the hour. They knew armed guards would be required to protect their compounds from the angry mobs. But how would they pay the guards once money was worthless? What would stop the guards from choosing their own leader? The billionaires considered using special combination locks on the food supply that only they knew. Or making guards wear disciplinary collars of some kind in return for their survival. Or maybe building robots to serve as guards and workers - if that technology could be developed in time.

This was interesting also:

They were amused by my optimism, but they didn't really buy it. They were not interested in how to avoid a calamity; they're convinced we are too far gone. For all their wealth and power, they don't believe they can affect the future. They are simply accepting the darkest of all scenarios and then bringing whatever money and technology they can employ to insulate themselves - especially if they can't get a seat on the rocket to Mars.

The biggest thing to remember about the Silmarillion is that it is- almost without exception- unrelentingly bleak. Not bleak like George RR Martin, but rather tragic and sad.

Remember that what Tolkien wanted to highlight or explore was the idea of Goodness, Courage and Honor in the absence of a Savior. Good men and women fighting the good fight, knowing they would lose.

430 I have no doubt in his heart of heart Rosenstein is sure President Trump had Russian help to get elected

No way. Everyone on that side knows it's pure unadulterated bullshit.

The Left are laughing at us because they are the ones in bed with the Russians. In fact, they probably ARE the Russians.

Trust me, they think it's absolutely hilarious that they can even create this lie, let alone repeat it every day. Watching us - the only real Americans left in the room - have to fight the made up charges keeps them lubricated.

431 What many Tolkien fans like about The Silmarillion is that it gives the backstory to a lot of the things hinted at in The Hobbit and LotR.
Posted by: davidt at July 13, 2018 09:48 PM (SV/HG)

I want to HAVE read it, but it's very difficult to actually READ it. It's like trying to read a Bible*, partially translated from a language that you took in high school. There's a lot of interesting things there, but interest and desire will only get you maybe a third of the way there.

* all books plus the hymnals, Sunday school curriculum, monthly newsletter, and tax returns going back twenty years.

*bows extravagantly*

One other amazing thing about Die Hard is that it was made before Bruce Willis became Bruce Willis. At the time, he was the goofy hipster con-man on Moonlighting. DH made Bruce into an action movie hero overnight.

Was Lethal Weapon a better Christmas movie?

Hmmmm, both had nudity.

Both had gunfights.

Both had White guys and Black guys as buddies.

One had Gary Busey, the other had Alan Rickman.

Huh, they compare fairly closely.

The lot of them are seditious. There's no other word for it. They are domestic enemies of the Republic, working to destroy it from within.

Only a short time ago I would have shrugged off such a suggestion as hyperbole, as exaggeration, but their behavior since Trumps election have revealed the truly ugly, committed side of these people.

Gay sex.

I think especially when you compare it to their behavior BEFORE Trump's election, it all comes in to sharp focus. Look at what they did with his suggestion that it was "rigged" or that he "might not accept the results". Look at the charges that were leveled at him.

I'm not talking here about "hypocrisy". I'm talking about a really deep dive in to what these people actually must be, and you cannot mistake it.

Add in the fact that they were using our intelligence apparatus to spy on his campaign and then passing along all the important information to his opponent while leveling these charges - and you would have to be Helen Keller and dead not to see it.

463 I have a connection to both Die Hard and Die Hard With A Vengeance. I have worked many times with the son of the author of the novel who is a set lighting tech in Hollywood. I was also the 2nd unit dolly grip on Die Hard With A Vengeance (although the only shot I did yhats in the movie is the push on the bomb under the train when the red light comes on). The script for DHWAV was originally just a standalone called Simon Says, which the studio made into a John Mclain story.
