Easier Problem - Black To Play (Ch. 1337)

Hint: The h2 square is very weak for White

20180714 - Problem 1.jpg
r1b2rk1/pp3p1p/3p2p1/2pPp3/2PbPPnq/3B3P/PPQ3P1/R1BN1R1K b - - 0 1

More Challenging Problem - Black To Play (718 )

Looking at the position, Black realizes that he needs to do something to protect his pawn on e5. There are a number of candidate moves to do this, among them 1...f6 and 1...d6. These look reasonable. However, both of these moves are not good. Why? What unpleasantries can White inflict on him in each of these two lines?

Hint: one line is an obvious fork, the other is trickier sacrificial line

Easier Problem - Black To Play

20180714 - Problem 1.jpg
r1b2rk1/pp3p1p/3p2p1/2pPp3/2PbPPnq/3B3P/PPQ3P1/R1BN1R1K b - - 0 1

Answer:

1...Qg3!
2.hxg4 Qh4#

or

2.Rf3 Qh2#

More Challenging Problem - Black To Play

20180714 - Problem 2.jpg
rnbqkb1r/pppp1ppp/8/3Pp3/4n3/2P1BN2/PP3PPP/RN1QKB1R b KQkq - 0 1

Line #1 starts with 1...d6.

This is not a good move because of the immediate:

2.Qa4+!

Forking the knight on 34.

2...Bd7
3.Qxe4

And White's position is better.

Line #2 starts with 1...f6

Also not good. White can initiate a combination with

2. Nxe5 fxe5
3. Qh5+ Ke7

If 3...g6? then 4.Qxe5+ forks King, rook, and knight.

4. Qxe5+ Kf7
5. Qxe4

In this position, it is now White who is up now up a pawn, plus he has a big lead in development, plus Black's king is exposed on f7. White is way better, and should win.

Hope to see you all next week!

___________

Note: that cryptic line of letters and numbers you see underneath each board diagram is a representation of the position in what is known as "Forsyth-Edwards Notation", or F.E.N. It's actually readable by humans. Most computer applications nowadays can read FEN, so those of you who may want to study the position, you can copy the line of FEN and paste into your chess app and it should automatically recreate the position on its display board. Or, Windows users can just "triple click" on it and the entire line will be highlighted so you can copy and past it into your chess app.

___________

So that about wraps it up for this week. Chess thread tips, suggestions, bribes, rumors, threats, and insults may be sent to my yahoo address: OregonMuse little-a-in-a-circle yahoo dott com.

87 Second problem/question: if f6, then NxP, PxN and Q-h5+ wreaking havoc, chasing king everywhere, and winning back the knight (or more). If d6, then Qa4+ and QxN, winning a piece.

Black instead should either just give the pawn back and try to get developed, or do something a bit less disastrous to defend the pawn, like Bd3 or Qf3 or something. But no matter what he chooses, white is still better, because he has much more development.

91 On the second problem, Qf6 is also really bad due to Bd3, and it's impossible defend the knight -- but if it moves, then Bg5 creates even more nightmares for black.

(In my previous comment, I meant Bd6 and Qf6 -- I still think in old-school notation.)

That's more or less right. The 1..f6 line is reminiscent of the Knight sac in Damiano's Defense 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 f6? 3.Nxe5!

The position I used actually comes from a line in the Ponziano Defense

1.e4 e5
3.c3 Nf6
3.Nf3 Nc6
4.d4 Nxe4

...which leads me to believe that 3...Nxe4 is inferior.

133 Spealing of beauty:

Today, the BBC published an HILARIOUS article -- unintentionally hilarious -- about the common practice of showing pretty girls in the stand during televise sports games:

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-44810404

"I was a World Cup honey shot"

The article quote s litany of leftist and feminists decrying the practice, saying how sexist and patriarchal etc. etc. it is.

To illustrate how horrible it is, the tell the tale of what happened to a Colombian girl who was chosen by the cameraman for a brief close-up during the previous World Cup. Brace yourself for tales of horror!:

"t's known as the "honey shot" - when a conventionally attractive woman is picked out of the crowd by cameras at a sporting event.

The issue has come under scrutiny during this World Cup and Fifa has said broadcasters have got to stop zooming in on "hot women".

It happened to Natalia Betancourt at the 2014 World Cup game between Colombia and Brazil.

Those few seconds on screen would launch a career in modelling and on TV.

...Her image was noticed by the singer Rihanna, who shared a picture of Natalia in the crowd, captioning it "Colombian cutie".

"It was a fun moment, but I thought that was it - a few seconds of fame and a nice Twitter interaction with a pop star I admire."

When Natalia returned to Colombia from the tournament in Brazil, she wasn't prepared for what would happen next.

"That image opened the doors of the media for me," she explains.

"I had nothing to do with that world before, I owned a construction supplies company with my boyfriend."

Within months, she was on the front cover of men's magazines.

"I took part in the Colombian edition of the reality TV show Dancing with the Stars," says Natalia.

"That was a game changer; afterwards I became more comfortable and relaxed being in the media."

She's since worked with a number of Colombian brands and now models for an international hair care company."

Why -- they ruined her life! Made her rich and successful!

Even more comical, the BBC decided to illustrate this article with photos of (wait for it) HOT CHICKS IN THE STANDS, because having those photos is the only way to get people to click on the link! So they shot themselves in the foot, proving by their own editing choice the necessary rationale for focusing on hot chicks in the first place.

A double own-goal.

Any pecans are fine. Ones you picked up from beneath the tree are best. Definitely Karo syrup.

And a strong argument can be made that chest pie got its name as an evolution of old southern women calling it "just pie." Which it is. Just a simple pie.

202 Game related:

The latest (free) update to No Man's Sky comes out in 10 days: No Man's Sky NEXT. It's timed to come out when the Xbox-1 version of the game is released. It's the largest update yet, and it finally brings the long failed (lied about?) promise of true multi-player. No Man's Sky had a disastrous, and crazy launch originally, and Sean Murray had a terrible habit of exaggerating (lying?) about the features the game would have. Some have implied Sony forced him to release it before he was finished. I've had it since launch and I've followed the story closely. It's really a resource management space simulator, and not really a game per se. But now, with the addition of true multi-player that will probably change. The game is notable for being one of the largest games ever, with millions of planets. This is made possible by having a procedurally generated game area, an unfortunate side affect of that is that some of the planets have a bland sameness about them.

Non game related:

The only thing to talk about is nitpicks, because everything big is sorted out really nicely.
- Throttle is touchy. It feels like you'll get whiplash easing off unless you clutch in first.
- Turn signal switch is a little far
- For that matter, levers are a little far
That's really all. Everything else is very well designed and implemented. As for break-in, yes, there's a procedure in the manual, but it's nothing off the wall. It's got 0 miles in the driveway because I asked them to deliver it; the dealer is 10 miles away and it's raining off and on, which is the worst way to acclimate to new tires and controls. I took it around the neighborhood for about 2 miles after the rain had let up for an hour or so and had no real surprises or complaints. It's like a Corolla or something, it just works the way you expect.

Well one can fish alone, in fact I think serious anglers are secretive about their special spots. And pie is tasty regardless. So first you have to be willing to enjoy life, even solo. When that happens it gets easier to find at least a part time buddy.

But I know, I know. people who are depressed can't help it. But they tell you not to try to save someone from drowning if you are not a strong swimmer, and I use that with people and emotions. I have to work hard to keep myself on an even keel, I feel like I can't be trying to save someone who is always down or bipolar or whatever or I'd just get pulled under along with them.

At least she never combined it with those "looted from disco-era Earth, Wind, and Fire's stage wardrobe" sneakers.

312 Thank you.

So, your friendly Bandersnatch has bartered some tree care with the ex-wife. She paid to have the Husqvaarna tuned up and I've volunteered to murder stuff with it.

One of the things is a limb 15 or so feet up. I should point out that I love this stuff but I have done any of it for ages.

So I take out the extension ladder and extend it to where the limb is. Then, being a smart Bander, I decide to go up and secure the ladder to the tree with one of those tie down things with a ratchet.

The problem is that when I got to the point where I wanted to tie it I could not reach around the tree. When I went up one more rung the thing I was trying to prevent happened. The ladder slipped.

I was able to grab the tree. I let the ladder fall. Now your middle aged Bander is hugging a tree 12 or 15 feet up.

I shimmied down, including over an obstacle, but the insides of my arms and legs and the outside of one arm have the tree version of road rash.

It's ouchy.
