Max Boot: I've Decided to Become More Like a Stereotypical Liberal So I'm Into Soccer Now

Like a teenager trying on new identities, seeing which one the Kewl Kidz like the best.

By learning to appreciate soccer, I have also learned to appreciate the limits of American exceptionalism. Yes, we are a great nation, but that doesn’t mean that it’s our way or the highway. In fact, we become even greater if we learn to treasure the customs and attitudes of other lands. I suppose, in the end, my change of heart about sports is related to my change of heart about politics. In both fields I eschew the Trump Doctrine: "We're America, b---." No, we’re part of the world.

I don't have anything against soccer. I do, however, have something against weaklings, weaklings who at late states of their lives must scramble to remake themselves into something more acceptable to their New Leftist Best Fwiends.

12 Leftists have almost evolved into a different species.

Evolutionists have often wondered how two different species can arise (as sometimes happens) from a single ancestor, which splits into two different ancestral lines which drift furhter and further apart. The most famous example was a single species of monkey which somehow made its way to a previously uninhabited island. Once there, the solitary band of monkeys, over time, broke apart into two bands, which slowly branched apart into two differnet kinds of monkeys -- one kind grew bigger and bigger so it could eat a big tough kind of fruit, while another branch grew smaller and smaller so it could survive on a small kind of nut. Evntually, the two branches separated enough tio be considered two entirely different speices which could not interbreed -- even though they had all started out as the same species.

That's what's happening right now with leftists versus normal people. They are literally splitting apart from regular humanity and spinning off into a separate world and bcoming an entirely different speicies of hominid. Sometimes the difference between species is mostly behavioral and "mental," meaning the brains works a different way, leading to different behavior, leading (in the very long-term) to different bodies. We're not quite at the bodies stage yet, but the first part of the evolution is already happening.

I do.

Soccer is a boring, ill-conceived sport. Just as cricket is an extremely boring version of baseball (which itself is, frankly, a bit boring), soccer is the ultra-boring version of rugby.

It would be dead-simple to revise the rules of soccer to make it actually interesting -- not two hours of running around, leading t a 0-0 tie.

But no. It is ossified with terrible rules, leading to a tedious game.

What I'm getting at is that America is no stranger to soccer. It just hasn't become a huge success on the PROFESSIONAL level. Yet.

54 The entire concept of "exceptionalism" admits that other nations have positive things. Its not universal supremacy, rather exceptional: unusual, special, unique.

Soccer is okay, but its kinda dull unless you're drunk and in the stands. Other than that, its just something to rally around and cheer for, more about being part of something with others than actual enjoyment of the game.

And its super easy to play. I mean its hard as any other sport to be GREAT at, but any idiot who can run can play.

Imagine an NFL game decided by a series of extra point tries one after another. The game is popular because entry cost is low - you don't even need a ball, I've seen random groups of kids around the world playing with a rolled up sock.

104 World cup soccer is just about the most nationalistic tournament out there, next to the Olympics. And league level games, well for the players they are all about money and for the fans, it is more tribalistic. Which is why Liverpool FC fans hate the Man Utd and so forth. So Max Boot is saying he wants to emulate those traditions?

Everything Eurotrash touches is all about nationalism. Which is why the whole EU thing is such a joke.

The Eurotrash put nationalism into all the wrong things and take it out of all the right things. Typical Europe. Screwing everything up and then giving a shit-eating grin about their fvck-ups while lecturing actual countries on how to do things. It would be funny if it weren't so pathetic.

... okay. It's pathetically funny.

128 I was listening to one of the Freakanaomics podcast episodes recently and they were talking about sports because the world cup is happening.

Apparently some economists tried to measure some ideas that you have in sports, and they found that the concept of home-field advantage actually empirically exists, but it doesn't show up in the actual teams themselves. They analyzed a bunch of things across sports - things like penalty shots, or field goals, or free throws, and they found that players don't genreally perform better or worse when they have their home team or the opposing team's fans yelling at them.

Home field advantage is largest in Soccer in the sports they talked about, and the reason they found is because of behavior of the refs. They found statistical differences in the refs for favoring home teams in the terms of how they issue penalties and the amount of stoppage time they award. When the home team is down at the end of regulation, the refs tend to put more time on the clock (which lets the home team catch up). When the home team is up, they put less time on.

They also talked about corruption and bribery and a bunch of other fun stuff.

190 Soccer is happening because divorcees are unable to teach their sons how to throw or hit a baseball, throw a football or tackle someone, or throw a punch or duck a punch.

All they can do is teach how to kick balls.

The US Army biathlon training facility happens to be in the town I live in. Want to talk about the Terminator - the guys training there are robots. They go by you while they are training and you can feel the raw energy emanating from them, kind of like having a train locomotive pass close. To be able to ski that hard and that fast, then being able to hold a rifle steady enough to shoot is amazing. Granted I'm a good deal older then these kids are, but I'd be doubled up on the ground throwing up, not trying to aim a rifle.

192 I do, however, have something against weaklings, weaklings who at late
states of their lives must scramble to remake themselves into something
more acceptable to their New Leftist Best Fwiends.

I have been watching the 'Colony' TV series.

Wayne Brady plays "Everett Kynes" a genius who invents an algorithm that sorts humans for use in their alien overlord's unknown purposes, based on personality traits.

On the latest episode he tells two people who believed themselves to be elite, that they were actually chosen because they were evaluated and found to be "weak" - perfectly suited to be collaborators with the evil alien invaders.

"They saw weakness. They knew you were the kind of crabs who would always drag the others back down into the bucket." - Kynes

That's Max Boot.

I played soccer in high school a billion years ago. Football had the no
neck jocks who wore collared shirts, soccer had the long hair burnouts

The choice was easy.

202 Soccer is for pussies. No offense. I used to play soccer. I played for many years. I was a step below semi-professional. I found tennis, and walked away. Basically, tennis was a sport where there was no benefit to pretending to be injured.

A few years later, I watched a soccer match on T.V. It was Australia vs. Some African team. One player was kicked in the face with the ball. Play was stopped, because he had a bloody nose. 4 men carried him off the field ON A STRECHER. For a nosebleed...

I never regretted my decision to quit. There is no way I would allow myself to be carried off the field for a nosebleed.

234 First of all, soccer is the most overrated boring sport ever conceived. Nothing says AWESOME like a sport with basically a secret time keeper where important games can end regulation at 0-0 and be decided by penalty kicks.

Second, American Exceptionalism does not have a caveat for soccer. By all fucking means, if the US were like every other pathetic country, the only sport we'd play would be soccer, and we'd dominate the world at that, too.

We DO, however, play other sports, including a few that no other country in the world plays (NFL, NASCAR), or only a handful play (MLB). We also dominate world competition in Hockey and Basketball. It's simply that we don't give two shits about soccer.

Absolute studs on a PT Test - and absolute fucking wastes of time in the field. Strong as shit, fast as Hell - in short spurts.

Now - the farm boys and such - maybe not the best PT tests - but they could work all day.

Served with two guys that were on the Buddy System, Decathlon Guys from North Dakota State or some shit. Now those two - the best all-around functional athletes I've ever known. Could max the PT Test AND put in a good day in the field.

I always wondered if part of it was just the mental willingness to suffer and continue to work.

The Rainbow Game. Not near the same.

Posted by: Cannibal Bob at July 13, 2018 02:05 PM (Zmczq)

275 In American, sports, over the decades and centuries, we have intentionally tweaked the rules and the parameters to make the games more entertaining. For example, in the early days of American football, final game scores were often along the lines of 6-3, or even 2-0 (one team scored a safety), because the rules too heavily favored defense. So we kept adjusting the rules (like having forward passes, making clipping illegal, etc.) so that teams could more easily score. Etc. and so on with all American sports.

It often takes very minor misalignments in the rules for games to become extremely lopsided, wherein it's too difficult -- or too easy -- to score. In cricket for example, some "innings" can go on for 18 hours, where a single batter can rack up 700 bases before finally getting out. It's the reverse of soccer -- boring in the opposite way, as scoring is too simple and too commonplace. So American baseball -- an improvement of cricket -- adjusted the rules so that scoring is more difficult, and teams trade offense/defense more often, so each side has something to cheer about.

Since soccer's current rules make it far too difficult to score, and makes all types of scores be equal value, the game is extremely tedious to observe. All it would take is some simple tweaks to make it fun again.

Suggestions:

-- Widen the goal by about 10%, making it easier to get balls into the net.

-- Make goal-shots from far away count more (like the 3-point basket in basketball), while penalty shots count less. Best would be: Regular goal counts for 2 points, goal from far away counts for 3 points, and a penalty-shot goal counts for 1 point -- pretty much as is done in basketball. Much superior.

-- Loosen up the "offsides" rule in soccer, which is too confusing and too restrictive. Let people run around wherever they want. More exciting, more scoring.

See how easy that was?

But no. The game is rigidly ossified with these terrible parameters. And thus is boring.

Reason? Equipment required.

Any goatherder in a tora boran cave can kick a goat head between two posts.

Playing American football requires a shitload of advanced protective equipment to keep you from being a quadriplegic.

Basketball? Played by 5' 2" Koreans? It'd be like watching the WNBA.

288 I'm sorry, if you don't like it, GTFO. Not because I'm telling you to, not because I don't want you here, but because life is too short not to live somewhere that aligns with your values and identity such that you believe it is the greatest of all time and want to make it better still.

If you truly believe in diversity and acknowledge we're not all cut from one cloth and should not all be ruled by the exact same set of obligations, obligations to which free men voluntarily submit in the interest of an organized society benefiting them and those like them, and thus there must be different nations and states and municipalities governed in different manners.

To live in one that you do not consider exceptional, the best, and that you want to improve IN LINE WITH ITS CHARTER (i.e., not imposing the charters of other states) out of patriotism or civic pride, you're a pitiful, spineless human being.

TL;DR: SAD!!

366 One of the reasons I love baseball so much is the fact that it's so obviously a game.

Strikes, ball, runs. A diamond that you run around to try and get right back to where you started.

There's no implication of something larger, the kind of feeling I get from football and soccer that seem to have antecedents to some kind of war exercise.

Maybe I'm wrong about the actual history of the sports, but that's the feeling I get from baseball.

It's literally just a game, and that's what I like about it.

I coulda had a scholarship. But it's complicated. You see my 'summer' girlfriend was a 'jersey girl. So I applied to a 'jersey college which was tops in soccer to be near her. Coach wrote a letter. Scouts showed up.

It looked real good. Then on a date she 'casually' mentioned she was sore because she had just been fked in the ask that day.

You have to understand the morals of 'jersey girls. She was one of the 'better' ones.

There are people who reduce the game to 30 minutes.

Its really they only way to watch football, which is like 4 hours long but has 30 minutes of actual play. The rest is really loud and has shiny objects to distract you from that fact. And craploads of ads.

That's the big advantage of soccer: it never stops, except for injuries (briefly). No ad breaks. They try to squeeze ads in by running little ones in the corner.

PED testing in AAA is so much stronger than big leagues nowadays. Baseball's minor leagues are so expansive too, talent is spread out much more. And the minors are full of young players, many straight out of high school. It's very rare for a major leaguer not to have spent at least a couple years in the minors. Only the best of the best rise to the top.

People tell me soccer is really physically demanding - at least at the pro level, and I believe them. Those guys are in very good shape. I have a problem with a sport that doesn't utilize the upper body. My own favorite sport, baseball is routinely called boring (by un-American Commies I personally think nothing is more boring than watching race cars circle a track. But I'm not that interested in pissing on things that other people find pleasurable.

I know a woman who has been a vegetarian for 30 years (grew up on a farm raising pigs). Her husband is not a vegetarian. She arrives at barbeques with her box of Bocca Burgers, quietly cooks them and enjoys the food there than she can eat, like potato salad. She doesn't preach or lecture anybody, she just does her own thing. She's just fine.

People bitching and snarking about how stupid X is for liking X are tiresome, no matter what their politics are.
