Hugh Latimer
Unknown

If you think that our current cultural warfare is nasty, just take a look at the Protestant Reformation as practiced in England in the 16th century. Henry VIII started it for political reasons, his successor (Edward VI) continued it for religious reasons, and his successor, Mary I fought back with a vengeance, burning a few hundred people at the stake, including these two gentleman (and a third, Thomas Cranmer, the Archbishop of Canterbury)) who became known as the Oxford Martyrs.

Mary was brutal, but she failed; Protestantism flourished in England. As Latimer said to Ridley:

"Be of good comfort, and play the man, Master Ridley; we shall this day light such a candle, by God's grace, in England, as I trust shall never be put out."
And they did!

I remember as a kid, hearing another quotation, supposedly from Latimer to Ridley, that piqued my interest. I can't find any verification of it, so it may have been apocryphal, or from a novel or play or movie. It was fascinating and exciting for a young kid to hear such confidence and devotion and religiosity and true belief.

Be of good cheer master Ridley, for tonight we sup with the angels!

And...religion is not the only thing that cultivates such dedication. It would behoove the Left in America to remember that.

31 I hope when Trump gets back from meeting with Putin he fires Rosentstein for trying to embarrass him and playing politics.

Hopefully someone asks Putin about these preposterous charges.

If I were Putin I would say the following...

"These charges are baseless and malicious.

If the so called Department of Justice would like to proceed with this farce, my administration will call for a hearing in the General Assembly of the UN, there the so called Department of Justice will make a presentation of the evidence they have collected, I will send legal emissaries to listen and ask questions of the so called prosecutors and investigators of the so called Department of Justice.

If the presentation and cross examination shows compelling evidence that Russian citizens committed these alleged crimes, I will personally deliver them to the US authorities for trial."

I bet Roesenpenis balks at that scenario.

This is all a multi-act production of The Aristocrats.

35 Willowed:
I guess this statute simply restates the obvious but it would be interesting to see the case law around this one.
The case law is all one sided. The law itself has been ruled constitutional, "18 U.S. Code 242 means exactly what it says" and all of the case law reads like this:

Miller
V U.S. :"The claim and exercise of a constitutional right cannot be
construed into a crime." (Of particular interest since it was second
amendment case.)

Hertado V California: "The state cannot diminish the rights of the people."

Sherer V Cullen: "There can be no sanction or penalty imposed on one because of this exercise of constitutional rights".

Under 42 U.S. Code 1983 anyone violating 18 U.S. Code 242 loses their immunity and can be personally sued for damages.

52 Different mustache and beard, Latimer's nose more hooked and eyes are different. Ridley's eyes are more open. The reason they look similar is because they both have beards and mustaches and about the same length and color of hair, and they're both holding Bibles. Both menwear black hats and have black in their outfits. I prefer the striped over cassock (or whatever the official sartorial term is) because it makes a nicer look than the extreme black. Their commitment to her being president even carried over after election in the attempted coup.

99 And this is my point, if you look at the court painters of the Tudors, and for Phillip II they style is so much better for Spain.

Granted, they are good pictures of Hapsburg jaws, but with better feeling of line and shadow.

Juan Pantoja's paintings are a good example of Philip II's court paintings veresus Elizabeth's.

(Now, Diego Velazquez is miles better, but that is late 1600's, and he has that Dutch thing going)

Gowdy knows that even if the House managed to vote for impeachment, a trial in the Senate and subsequent guilty verdict for removal is at an almost zero percent chance of happening. Think something like that would take place three months out from a legislature election? No, and the optics of the Senate not actually impeaching him and the Democrats screaming every day about obstruction of justice are not what anybody should want right now.

Rosenstein can be fired. Today. Sessions can be fired. Today. Trump isn't going to do either before the midterms. I believe after the midterms, particularly if the Senate gains Rep. seats, then Sessions will resign. And Trump can nominate Gowdy , etc. to the AG position and he can then reshuffle the deck at DOJ and the FBI.

It does look like a Holbein, but all of his portraits I can find with this marker write out the word "Aetatis", and so it appears to be someone doing a very good approximation of Holbein's style. Don't doubt that these portraits were commissioned for a wealthy Protestant, possibly even Elizabeth 1, or one of her ministers.

163 "Bloody Mary" was nothing compared with Murderous Elizabeth, who killed orders of magnitude more Catholics than Mary did protestants. But protestants became the establishment power, so they got to write the history.

Nonetheless, Foxe's work is highly unreliable. For an accurate appraisal of the motives behind the protestant revolution in England, read William Cobbett A History of the Protestant Reformation in England and Ireland - written by a protestant MP about 1800.

The point the present Anglo-Episcopal church has reached was inevitable, baked into its founding.

204 Protestantism "flourished" in England because Elizabeth I punished it, which she didn't want to do necessarily, but ended up having to because of efforts from French to overthrow her and put Mary Queen of Scots (raised in France and widowed by the French King) on the throne as a puppet. James continued the persecution. The State wanted a State religion, which it got and the Puritans ratcheted up the anti-catholicism another notch even hating the State religion. The power struggle led to the English Civil War which, in turn, led to our Revolution.

It's interesting to see how our Constitution is essentially a product of the English Civil War.

213 Elizabeth and Mary executed roughly equivalent numbers over the course of their reigns, IIRC, but Elizabeth was around for a LOT longer than Mary, and had to deal with the Spanish, etc. So Mary had a rather higher body count per year.

Also, Henry VIII did not just alter the church on a whim. Two things get forgotten:

1) The French kings had passed an act of supremacy doing pretty much the same thing back in the 1480s, so He wasn't doing anything unprecedented. It just that the Reformation added a dimension and tensions not present earlier (which is why no one remembers the French act....)

2) Henry was apparently convinced that his lack of an heir, putting England at risk of War of the Roses 2.0, was due to his marrying his brother's widow with papal dispensation (Henry's adultery wasn't weighing on his conscience, apparently). When he asked for an annulment, the Pope offered instead a dispensation for bigamy! What else was Henry to do?

235 We're over 100, so an off-topic comment on an article in the EMT if you'll forgive me. It is on the San Francisco poop article. In that article, there is this gem:
There are about 7,500 homeless people living in San Francisco according to the city, which will spend nearly $280 million this year on housing services for the homeless.

Someone needs to go to jail - either because they're lying about the official statistics or because they're stealing the money.
Let's do the math (I know, party foul here):
280,000,000/7,500 == 37,333
So that is over $37k per year, per homeless person!
Per month, that is $3,111.

San Francisco is in the middle of an absolutely monstrous housing bubble and housing affordability crisis. The median one-bedroom apartment in that city runs about $3,500 per month. So the city is spending *very* nearly the same price as a median (that is, middle-of-the-road (cost-wise)) one-bedroom apartment on each and every homeless person in the city, and yet those people are still homeless.

So which is it? Are they lying about the number of homeless people or is someone stealing the money? Or is San Francisco embracing the power of and?

Zombie, if you're around, I know you're from NorCal. What do you see with your own lyin' eyes?

239 Good morning Horde!!!

My morning chores are done, I am celebrating 55 years on this planet, and I ate the first tomato out of my garden for breakfast.

In my tiny corner of the world, life is pretty good.

CBD, thanks for a couple of great pictures. Man has done a poor job of interpreting Christ's commands for His church-not Henry's or Elizabeth's or Mary's, or Luther's. I think there is a verse in Luke (9:41) that sums it up: "Oh unbelieving and perverse generation, how long shall I stay with you and put up with you?" We get it wrong so often, and I think it exasperates God, but he loves us in spite of ourselves. I am personally very grateful for that.

240 Henry VIII was an athlete until he got a major brain injury during a jousting exhibition. It apparently changed his personality too.

It's stupid to imagine the "family values" of Henry VIII through today's lens. He was trying to get an heir, which was eluding him. Remember that he wasn't that far removed from the War of the Roses. The Tudors weren't exactly the legitimate heirs to the throne. The Pope, who would probably otherwise have given Henry his annulment, was being held by the Hapsburgs who didn't necessarily want Henry to dump Katherine of Aragon. He stayed married to her for a long time, only giving up thinking he could get an heir on Anne Bolyn after many years. She produced only a girl, then Jane Seymore died, he divorced the ugly German, beheaded another for slutting around and was outlived by the last.

The remake of Cat People, yes, with Nastassia Kinski and Malcolm McDowell. They were were-beings -- they turned into black leopards/jaguars, and there were all sorts of implications about incestuous relations between them (they were brother and sister). A weird film, but it really captures the flavor of the city at the time, 1982.

I remember when I was young finding what I thought looked like a fascinating book in our church library, "Lives of the Martyrs". Turned out to be a catalog of the most horrific tortures and gruesome killings you can imagine, in fact a lot were much worse than anything I could ever imagine on my own. Stories like "So they tied St. Oblivia into a burlap sack and let her be bounced around by two bulls for hours, and miraculously she still wasn't dead, so recognizing that this must be a miracle, the soldiers cut off her head with a sword." Charming stuff.

I still can't believe a church, of all places, kept that thing around for kids to read. It'd be like having "Faces of Death" in the church video library.

Major brain insult. He may have had a leg injury too, though. His gout, little wonder was exacerbated by a diet high in tanins. Of course, at a time when water HAD to be decomtaminated by the addition of alcohol of some kind, that's a problem. The very poor resorted to "small beer" made in every kitchen. Drinking water without adding some alcohol was deadly. The king would have had red wine which is bad for gout only second to stout.

Someone needs to go to jail - either because they're lying about the official statistics or because they're stealing the money.
Let's do the math (I know, party foul here):
280,000,000/7,500 == 37,333
So that is over $37k per year, per homeless person!
Per month, that is $3,111.

Mr. Mannix, I think this is an excellent example of why the left can't do math. They rattle off numbers like this, screaming that it isn't enough to do the job, but you have to ask, what job are you trying to do? Are you trying to house, feed and provide medical care for the homeless? Or are they trying to provide them with the same things people who work for a living and receive that amount of money are able to purchase?

I absolutely believe in helping those who are unfortunate, or who are unable to provide for themselves. But I have a problem with this. It doesn't pass the smell test.

The ever-growing sucking chest wound of administration. Always need to ask (as Moki did) what the goal is. The goal here is probably only tangentially related to the homeless. The real goal is the growth of administration and the conversion of the department into a semi-autonomous suzerain, with the sinecures that go with it. But you mustn't overstretch or someone will notice.

I wonder when the taxpayers of San Francisco will notice that they're being robbed blind and pissing away a quarter billion dollars a year and getting nothing but bags of feces, spent needles and unchecked street aggression for their money.

You know since Mueller is trolling Trump regarding the Russian Protrusion?

425 The ever-growing sucking chest wound of administration. Always need to ask (as Moki did) what the goal is. The goal here is probably only tangentially related to the homeless. The real goal is the growth of administration and the conversion of the department into a semi-autonomous suzerain, with the sinecures that go with it. But you mustn't overstretch or someone will notice.
---------------------------
The goal is just what Kafka taught - to create a system where no one is in charge so those in charge can never be held responsible for failure. You will notice, they never miss a payday while you are chasing your tail. Then they laugh and laugh.

432 I'd point out that Henry VIII executed 200 members of the peaceful Pilgrimage of Grace over a couple of weeks (and that wasn't the only thing of that sort he ordered) compared to "Bloody" Mary's 300 over five years.

435 "Well, the Audubon Zoo, anyway. He got out of his enclosure and killed,
get this, 4 alpacas (I bet they wish they'd stayed on the farm), an emu,
and a fox! Clearly he wasn't hungry, he just wanted to kill something."
Speaking of animals that just want to kill something, I once had a chat with the head honcho of the large-primate unit at the Lincoln Park Zoo. He said that if they ever had a problem with rat infestation in one of the habitats (rats do sneak in, and obviously they can't use poisoned bait) they just move the chimps into that habitat: problem solved.

"Be of good comfort, and play the man, Master Ridley; we shall this day light such a candle, by God's grace, in England, as I trust shall never be put out."

And the Anglican church said "here, hold my beer".

437 Protestantism was imposed on England from the top down with very few exceptions. Eamon Duffy's "The Stripping of the Altars" documents this fact in great detail from archives of the time. When Mary became queen, people brought out the statues, books, vestments, etc. that they had hidden during the previous reigns.

440 You conveniently forget that Catholics were also martyred by Protestants in England. And for the record, the Catholic church is huge and expanding. The Anglican church is on the verge of death.

441 One last truth: Henry the 8th broke from Catholicism because he wanted to have sex with other women. Not a great way to start a religion.

442 H-8 did what he did for "POLITICAL" reasons?
Puhleeze. He told Rome to shove off b/c Rome wouldn't grant him an (illicit) divorce and H-8 was not pleased. Besides that, he got 'clear title' to his very own island.
Then he knocked off a bunch of Catholics who would not kiss his ........ring and Longshanks did the same.

443 Well, the Anglicans think his last words were a conflation of the two. "When Mary came to the throne, [Latimer] was arrested, tried for heresy, and burned together with his friend Nicholas Ridley. His last words at the stake are well known: "Be of good cheer, Master Ridley, and play the man, for we shall this day light such a candle in England as I trust by God's grace shall never be put out."

444 "Be of good cheer, Master Ridley, and play the man, for we shall this day light such a candle in England as I trust by God's grace shall never be put out."

I think this line was used in Fahrenheit 451, IIRC in a scene where a book hoarder lights his house and himself on fire rather than see them destroyed.
