Quote I

That’s exactly why the left is so hysterical about the Supreme Court. They run to the courts to win their most unpopular policy ideas, gift-wrapped and handed to them as “constitutional rights.” Ann Coulter

Ann always interesting and usually controversial to some degree.

Quote II

“When I was a kid and used to come here, Chamula was isolated and didn’t have access to processed food. Now, you see the kids drinking Coke and not water. Right now, diabetes is hitting the adults, but it’s going to be the kids next. It’s going to overwhelm us.” Vicente Vaqueiros

Free Speech: 1 - Clock boy 0. The 1st Amendment alive and well, for another day.

It looks like time has run out for “Clock Boy,” the young Muslim American who was accused of bringing a hoax bomb to an Irving, Texas, high school back in September of 2015, when he was just 13. Clock Boy is the nickname conservatives gave freshman high school student Ahmed Mohamed after his stunt three years ago.

The young man was feted by the Left at the time and even invited to the White House by then-President Barack Obama. Both Hillary Clinton and Mark Zuckerberg expressed public support for Mohamed, folks like Stephen Colbert featured him on their shows, and CAIR (the Council on American-Islamic Relations) named Mohamed the American Muslim of the Year, as The Daily Wire noted.

Reason #13,658 why one should eat hamburgers at hamburger joints. Salads at McDonald's are making people sick.

Even under the best of circumstances, ordering salad at McDonald’s is a dicey endeavor. But now an outbreak of the foodborne parasite cyclospora has sickened over 100 people in Iowa and Illinois since May, and several cases are tied to salads purchased at the fast food giant.

The outbreaks were jointly reported Thursday by Iowa and Illinois health officials. In Illinois, about 90 cases have been seen since mid-May, with a quarter of victims reporting that they had eaten McDonald’s salads soon before they became sick. In Iowa, at least 15 people are thought to have eaten these salads just before developing a cyclospora infection, or cyclosporiasis, from late June to early July.

“Anyone who ate these salads since the middle of June and who developed diarrhea, especially watery diarrhea and fatigue, should see their health care provider and get tested for Cyclospora to ensure an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment,” Patricia Quinlisk of the Iowa Department of Public Health said in a statement.

Yummy.

The ONT Musical Interlude

July 15, 1978, The Rolling Stones started a two-week run at No.1 on the US album chart with Some Girls the group's seventh US No.1 album. The cover designed by Peter Corriston, featured The Rolling Stones in garish drag alongside select female celebrities and lingerie ads. The cover immediately ran into trouble when Lucille Ball, Farrah Fawcett, Liza Minnelli (representing her mother Judy Garland), Raquel Welch, and the estate of Marilyn Monroe who all threatened legal action. via thisdayinmusic.com

There is a time and place for ski masks and flannel clothing. Miami, FL is not one of them. Genius Award Winner.

A man in a ski mask was arrested Saturday after trying to rob a Broward bank, according to FBI officials.

But 46-year-old David Licht didn’t cash out as planned. In fact, he didn’t make it further than the door.

Police say footage shows a flannel-wearing Licht trying to open the front doors of a Wells Fargo in Hollywood off Taft Street.— the temperatures were in the 90s.

52 The thing that absolutely asslessly-chaps my ass about the Clock Boy thing is that the "clock" itself was such a weaksauce shitshow of embarrassment and ineptitude. Asshole (or his parents or whatever) unscrewed the enclosure from an off-the-shelf $6 digital alarm clock and put it in a fucking pencil case. And he gets lauded as some brilliant fucking engineer for "creating" a clock? For taking something designed in 1985 and slapped together in Shenzhen by the hundreds of thousands of units every year and making it worse? This gets you a fucking seat on the young inventors finalists' stage? I hope the eight year olds who, y'know, actually thought of new scientific or engineering or mathematical ideas and then synthesized them into reality made that asshole cry, mercilessly.

I am so irrationally pissed off about this.

Same. Trichina is pretty much eradicated from US pork. There's a whole generation or three of Americans who don't realize that a pork chop is just delicious pan-fried on its own because they grew up soaking it in applesauce just so it wouldn't have the texture of a mudflap.

127 That ice boat is pretty cool. but the guy needs to redesign his motor rig. Having to hold the tiller up to put the toothed wheel on the ice would get old pretty fast. There's a reason you step on the pedal to disengage the clutch, and not to engage it.

Motor wheel should be rigged so its own weight, or spring pressure, forces it into the ice, and handle arranged so that pushing down on it lifts the wheel off the ice. You could a latching device to hold the wheel off the ice for engine starting.

And that looks like a real old Briggs and Stratton engine, maybe off a tiller.

Yes, this. If he'd made a cardboard crystal radio kit, that would at least be making something from parts. If he took the clock apart and put it back together, that would at least indicate that he understood how to break something down and reassemble it and still have it work.

No, I have no real interest in doing so. I sure do have engines and stuff though, and even the big circular saw blade. Thing is, a skidoo will run fine on a frozen lake, and go faster than than that ice boat could, and it will also go across country if it's snow-covered. That ice boat would bog down in any depth of snow at all. Too specialized.

You would get tired real quick using muscle power to engage the wheel with the ice. I expect a fair bit of down-force is needed. Most snow machines, and I think quads now have a dead-man switch, like a key that hooks by a lanyard to your jacket. You get bucked off, lanyard pulls key out of socket, engine is shut down instantly.

Such a deadman switch would be very easy to rig on the ice boat, too.

245 CA Democrat Party endorses Kevin de Leon over Diane Feinstein for senator. Note this is one of those weird CA situations where the top two recipients of votes in the primaries are the ones on the ballot, so the general can have 2 people from the same party running against each other.

De Leon wrote the CA state sanctuary bill, and is to the left of Feinstein. The far loony radicals in the Democrat party (as opposed to the moderate loonies) have definitely been heartened by the victory of Camacho Elizando Ocasio-Cortes in NYC and think they can get this to snowball by ousting Feinstein.

I wish them luck. It's pure karma that these old white liberals thought they could sacrifice the country to amass power by overrunning it with illegals, encouraging grievance mongering and identity politics. They're getting their Davros moment when the Daleks they've created are turning on them and zapping them.

Ah, the Archimedes Screw vessel. Great in theory, not so great in practice. The two screw pontoons rotate in opposite directions, of course, have to, in fact. But if one pontoon gets more traction than the other, you scoot off sideways.

Such a beast was built, intended to be a snow machine, but its shortcomings were obvious. And the M29 Weasel came along, with track drive, and was an altogether bigger bang for the buck.

Posted by: lin-duh at July 15, 2018 11:17 PM (kufk0)

Yes, they can live on wet food. It's actually better than the alternative, if you have to choose only one, since cats are at risk for kidney problems if they don't get enough water (even if there's always fresh water available). Plus, wet food is, all other things being equal, higher in protein and other meaty goodness than dry food which often has more grain added that they can't really use.

In all cases, pick a decent brand to start with and you'll be fine. I did up an eye-wateringly boring spreadsheet of nutrition-to-cost that's around here somewhere, email in nick if you want.

I personally give mine Solid Gold brand Indigo Moon dry plus a can of Natural Balance limited ingredient canned about 3x/week.

Back in the late 70s I went to a snowmobile water cross race. A tiny 15yr old girl dominated the day. The sleds back then could kinda do water cross. The sleds today can actually gain speed on the water.

Now, I stumble into an ONT and you scalliwags are committing heresy against the world's greatest rock and roll band? Harumph!

So, two quick points, since taste is not a thing that people can be persuaded of.

Thing one: They've experimented in all of the genres. You could make a really good country album out of Stones songs.

Thing two: I only recently learned that one of the best jazz riffs in history was accidental. On "Can't You Hear Me Knocking" the song proper ends and there's a long instrumental.

It turns out that the musicians thought the song had ended and the recording stopped but they kept going because they were in a groove. It wasn't even so much the Stones proper, it was Billy Preston and Nicki Hopkins (I think) and their regular studio crew and it's brilliant.

One take only, because they didn't know they were being recorded.

This and also a cat's skull is the largest non-squishable part. If a cat can get its head in something, the rest of the cat will follow since they are basically a puddle with a head.

So, a box with a small opening that is sturdy enough that a dog won't bother trying to knock it over (or behind a couch or something) should be sufficient to limit access to kitty.

FWIW, most subversive sites will actually tell you that 1972 wasn't the "Tequila Sunrise Tour" for the Stones, but actually the "Cocaine and Tequila Sunrise Tour".

I can imagine they felt the need to leave that tidbit out of the Cuervo fluff piece.

In any event, the tour is said to have been the inspiration for The Eagles Tequila Sunrise which released in 1973.

Lydia used to sleep on the arm of the couch and occasionally just flop off in her sleep only to wake up inches from the floor and completely eat shit face-first. That was funny enough, but the elaborate "I meant to do that" act afterwards somehow made it even more hilarious. "Yes, I just bonked myself straight onto the floor out of a dead sleep, now I'm going to groom myself and what exactly are you looking at? You've never seen a cat groom herself?"

We use the Sam's brand cat litter for our cat. Comes in a plastic pail. As for boxes, you don't need anything fancy. We did get one with a lid. Does a little better job of containing the litter.

Whatever you get, though, make sure you've got a place for it where the dog can't reach it. That's another advantage of having a lid. You can turn the entrance to the litter box towards a corner of the room. The cat will be able to get in, but the dog generally can't.

It seems that she was so busy trying to win the Dem party that she neglected to get the endorsement of the Communist party ("Working Families Party" = communist). The commies endorsed the other guy, and now, supposedly, he can't be taken off the ballot unless he moves out of the district, gets put on the ballot for another office, or gets convicted of a crime. He says he's "not running", but I'm betting that he'll win if he's on the ballot. Remember Joe Lieberman and Kos darling Ned Lamont? Yeah, like that.

Maybe if Cortez the Killer hadn't been busy slagging her opponent and every other Dem official (right up to Nancy Pelosi) some pressure would be brought to bear. Not happening, Alexandria. Nancy's capos are going to serve you up a nice cold dish of Italian revenge.

I don't think you're standing alone, by any measure.

There's this study, backed up by real facts, that legal CCW permit holders are the least likely to break the law re use of guns. That those folks value their right to bear arms in such numbers that they rarely commit gun crimes.

Now, I don't have a problem with enhanced penalties for those paroled/pardoned on committing new gun violations; make it impossible to regain that right again.

If you believe in the power of rehabilitation, of redemption, then this is The Right Thing To Do.

340 Evenin' Horde,

Had a nice couple of days at the cabin with Average Wife. Picked up a nice copy of one of my favorite recordings, Pat Metheny Group's self-titled album, on vinyl, at an antique store in Monterey. I've had it on CD for about 30 years, but frankly the CD recording sucks. I thought it was just poorly mastered but I was pleasantly surprised to find the vinyl version much better.

Also picked up a copy of UFO's Obsession, for a friend. Never been into UFO (never really heard them, actually), but my friend's a big fan, so I had to buy it. First listen: not bad... actually quite good. Will have to keep my eyes open for more of their stuff.

361 Pat Metheny Group, the self-titled album, is probably one of the more approachable recordings. More melodic, with more traditional song structures. The two songs comprising Side A, San Lorenzo and Phase Dance are spellbinding. Side B is equally strong. Again, though, if all of the CDs made were of the same quality as my copy, you may be disappointed (main gripe: garbled hi-hats).

Two other great albums are Offramp and Bright Size Life (the latter is not Pat Metheny Group, just Pat Metheny... but features Jaco Pastorius on Bass).

The use of Moon-Clips in many revolvers requires the machining away of metal from the rear of the cylinder, to the same thickness as the stamped steel of the Moon-Clip material.

Results in proper headspace, this.

Done correctly, only the outer areas of the cylinder are thus machined, and the inner diameter is kept "as factory".

This way, rounds chambered without being fitted into a Moon-Clip will still headspace properly.

You'd have to see it in photos, but the Moon-Clip only overlays about the outer third of a revolver cylinder.

Machine it all down to the cylinder "star", and you'll have to use Moon-Clips 100% of the time, from there on.

398 Anyone who machines away the rear cylinder face on a "dash-two" or earlier Smith & Wesson revolver, needs to be flogged in the public square.

ONLY way I'd ever do such, is to buy a used cylinder from a "parts gun", and have it carefully matched and timed to the existing lockwork in my revolver.

But the original cylinder on a classic S&W is sacrosanct, and ought not be altered in any way.

Speed Loaders are good enough, even though not the fastest, for my 28-2 Smith & Wesson Highway Patrolman .357 Magnum.

Butcher the new production Smiths all you like, though. They're still good guns, but they're not the fully forged and machined classics of yore.

The fastest reload is a second revolver. Then, depending on your platform, full moon clips, speed loaders, half-moon clips, speed strips. YMMV.

It is not quite as bas as you may think, and actually the Leftards are alienating younger adults at an alarming (in a good way, for us) rate.

My very soon to be 22y/o daughter tells me that the Left is running kids around her age off with their batshit crazy stances and party purges of any moderates. She goes to Alabama, so I asked her what her friends at other, less conservative schools were saying.

Her opinion of the responses was that they are now aware that 1. the D party no longer cares about the middle class, or any class except illegals, really. 2. They never really did. They have shown their hand in replacing the voting population in this country with one who will vote for them. 3. They are aware that about half of the Rs feel the same way, and they know why.

It was amazing to hear this, unprompted by me, from her. They are getting "woke". Not in a way the Dems are gonna care for though, except for those moonbat kids hanging on the fringe.

If the code includes the '&' (ampersand) and you're running JavaScript, forget it. Pixy destroys ampersands.

not a good night tonight. at work here and get call that my daughter is
driving our old car a 2008 Ford Taurus x and the pos sputtered and
died, so I drive up north to see what I can do. looks like the battery
is deader than a hammer, but when we try and jump it all it does is
crank now. I am not a car guy, never have been. My bud here at work
came up with his tester and the thing doesn't register any fault codes.
I was hoping someone would have an idea. I will have to get a new
battery in am but I don't know if the damn thing will fire up even then.
