Doc on deck.jpg

PG on big chair.jpg

doc bathing pg.jpg

Hello there,

Devoted Pet Thread fan Peter here.

The in-your-face gray tabby is Doc, a streetwise stray given to us by a friend back in 2000. Photo taken in his prime, about a decade ago. Diagnosed with a jaw tumor in 2013, he was given a year at most but thankfully survived in good trim for over four, departing from us a year ago just after his 18th birthday. A show-off and a bit of a boor at times (he once rudely chased a Dalmatian out of our yard), he was nevertheless charmingly, brilliantly, 100 percent cat.

Not so our slightly cross-eyed flame-point, PG, who is 50 percent human. Photo a decade ago but still hale and hearty now at 16. We adopted him as a companion kitten for Doc. PG was for P.G. Wodehouse and “Perfect Gentleman” (compared to Doc). Being part Siamese, he will reply to any question you ask him, in one of 5 different languages, none of them English. He and Doc had many epic, fur-flying wrestling matches but also many snuggly naps, often including Doc’s daily head-wash of PG pictured here. Both guys utterly unique and irreplaceable.

Many thanks,

P & J.

What beautiful cats!! And they appeared to have been best buddies on top of it. You can never replace a pet. You can get a substitute but never a replacement. Thanks for the submission!!

**First name identification only please - feel free to pare this down for length**

My wife and I recently adopted a puppy from a local rescue organization. Her name is Poppy and she came from the Turtle Mountain Indian Reservation in North Dakota with a brother and a sister. The mother died of unknown causes when they were around 5 weeks old, and the puppies were surrendered to Turtle Mountain Animal Rescue, and then transported to Coco's Heart Dog Rescue near the Twin Cities. They believe that she is a Lab/German Shepherd mix (and I believe it too based on her ears), eventually we will be doing some DNA testing to find out for sure.

The rescue organization and her foster mom noticed an occasional limp from her front left leg. They took x-rays of the leg which were inconclusive, and they suspected a growth plate injury that would likely get better with time, but that it needed to be monitored. We ended up adopting her at approximately 12 weeks of age, and she is now almost 18 weeks. She has been an absolute joy to have around, and has integrated well with our two older dogs, but most of all with her sister Stella (black lab/border collie). They love to wrestle, chase and play tug.

Most of the time, most people probably wouldn't even notice her limp. Though you could definitely tell that something was wrong when she was tired, or after a particularly active day. Upon further examination by our veterinarian, they noted that the pain was up closer to her shoulder area. X-rays revealed a serious injury to the shoulder joint that even my untrained eyes could clearly see before they even pointed it out.

We were presented with 2 surgical options for treatment. Amputation or Arthrodesis (pins, plates and fusion of the joint to stabilize it). Arthrodesis would have required 6-8 weeks of recovery time with severely limited activity and a lot of pain...with no guarantee of success and the possibility of further surgeries and/or possible amputation. Even if everything had gone right, she would have very limited range of motion.

Amputation on the other hand has a much faster recovery time, and most dogs thrive on 3 legs, especially when done at a young age. To us, the choice was pretty clear that amputation would be the best thing for her. She had surgery on July 5th. During the surgery, the vet discovered canine bite marks near the shoulder, so they suspect that the mother or another dog must have severely bitten her at a very young age. If it had gone untreated, it would have continued to cause her significant pain that would have only worsened with time.

The first night after surgery was a nightmare with a screaming/crying/biting/thrashing dog suffering from dysphoria (due to narcotic pain meds and anesthesia drugs). Neither my wife or I could get any sleep, she needed constant attention to calm her down and to keep her from hurting herself. The only positive thing in this time was that her appetite (normally very healthy) was completely unaffected, and she was a completely different dog when she could eat.

About 24 hours after surgery, a switch flipped and she was feeling much better and getting around very well. 48 hours out and she is still doing great and has her tripod stance down perfectly. She is still sleeping a lot, which is a good thing...though she sometimes has trouble finding a comfortable spot to lay down because she doesn't want to lay on one side all the time.

If anyone out there ever has to face a decision about amputation for their pet, please know that there are plenty of 3 legged dogs out there that thrive. It can be a hard decision and process, but I can confidently say that she is going to do great.

I have attached some photos of her, and my wife also created an Instagram account for her. https://www.instagram.com/poppyhopsalot/ - Jeff

First of all, I'm not much of an editor. I appreciate you taking the time and sharing Poppy's photos and story. Cute pup. Good luck with her recovery and all of the training that comes along with a puppy.

28 3 legged dogs. I have a cousin that is a retired vet. He had a 3 legged dog that a customer wanted him to put down rather than amputate a leg. He said it was the best thing he could have done by adopting that dog because customers would see the dog getting around just fine and they would feel better about amputation.

People laps are comfort for little Borzoi puppies and protection from attacks by siblings. When they're older it's different. I was once sitting cross-legged in the driveway putting a new license plate on Her Majesty's car. Big Stanley, all 100 pounds of him, landed concussively in my lap.

48 Eh, PETA, I disagree with your technique. I'd go with comparing the top image to Al Jolson in blackface or tiki bars that desecrate "sacred" images by using them in their decor. We sit in a place of smug human privilege and think we can use these animals as the butt of a joke by imposing our human-centric culture on them while effacing and eradicating their natural cultural expressions (such as spraying and scratching furniture). We arrogantly assume that they cannot take care of themselves and that our human medicine and human manufactured food is necessary to them, thus preventing them from achieving their full potential of being our equals. We need more positive role models, like Rocket Raccoon.

52 Re Poppy, daughter H had a Grand Pyrenees she rescued (another story for some other day) that eventually developed cancer (osteosarcoma) and had a hind leg break. Choice was to amputate or put down, but the Hrothgar genes prevailed, daughter opted for amputation, and Zoey lived several years beyond the expected post-cancer life span, even with only three legs. She got around amazingly well, participated in most activities, enjoyed life, and was loved by all.
Amputation is an viable option, and my guess is that Poppy will live a long, active, and happy life.

My cats' vet (aka Kitty Doc) took in a cat who was (literally) left on his doorstep with a leg so badly mangled (probably from a run-in with a car or lawn mower) that she would have died if he hadn't amputated. Pia is now the office cat and an absolute charmer. She's as active as a normal four-legged cat and doesn't seem to know she's missing a leg. I bring along a catnip toy for her when my kittehs have their annual checkup.

78 A pleasant Pet'em and Pet'em again day to you all.

Thank you for the pictures and stories.

I just found out I have 5 if not 7 feral kittens that have taken up residence in my other barn. They look to be about 10 weeks. I have put out food and water for them.

I'd bet they are related to the two I rescued a while back.

96 69 Loved the mini pony surviving the flood. Probably a tree or other debris was against the wall for a bit and pony climbed the ramp. My experience with minis is they are smart and do not panic as the big horses often do. Or possibly there was an open door or window and pony got in house and then out window onto roof.
Posted by: PaleRider, simply irredeemable at July 14, 2018 04:30 PM (r4KP2)

Yeah i figured there was something it was able to climb on to get to the roof. Where they mention not knowing how he got up there because the water didn't get that high, well of course not. That's why the pony went there. Probably how the leg got hurt.

107 My cat Boots had been not eating well. I was thinking he might be getting some kind of liver issue or older cat poor digestion. Vet found he was missing teeth and suggested wet food, plus pulling his fangs.

The things I do for this cat. Wet food stinks, I had to move his feeding dish farther from my bedroom. Then at first Boots thought the Friskies chunks in gravy was great, but after a few days he would only lick up the gravy, so now I am trying the pate kinds and mixing them with water. The dog is thrilled with all the leftover cat food to clean up but I don't want him to get too much rich stuff. I keep editing my Chewy autoship.

Hopefully when the fangs are pulled, Boot's mouth will feel better and he will just eat whatever he is given.

112 We just put our wee Billy cat down. Woke up and she was not doing her normal yoww feed me. She was very distressed and fell over on her side. I thought that she had had a stroke. We tried to get her up but she could barely move.. Called the vet and she had her wee heart go had and there's blood clots moving thru Billy's body. At least we had some time to say goodbye to her and thank her for being the most beautiful spirited and pretty wee grey monster. It's a beautiful sunny day and she went in the sun on her faverite spot with us cuddling her and her mate Puska the dog kissing her goodbye as well. She was 18 years and tiny. She ran the household like a boss. We were blessed to have her but fuck it's heartbreaking. See you on the other side Billy Cat.

Totally worth repeating from the ONT last night...

"Gentlemen of the jury: The best friend a man has in this world may turn against him and become his enemy. His son or daughter that he has reared with loving care may prove ungrateful. Those who are nearest and dearest to us, those whom we trust with our happiness and our good name, may become traitors to their faith. The money that a man has, he may lose. It flies away from him, perhaps when he needs it the most. A man's reputation may be sacrificed in a moment of ill-considered action. The people who are prone to fall on their knees to do us honor when success is with us may be the first to throw the stone of malice when failure settles its cloud upon our heads. The one absolutely unselfish friend that a man can have in this selfish world, the one that never deserts him and the one that never proves ungrateful or treacherous is his dog.

"Gentlemen of the jury: A man's dog stands by him in prosperity and in poverty, in health and in sickness. He will sleep on the cold ground, where the wintry winds blow and the snow drives fiercely, if only he may be near his master's side. He will kiss the hand that has no food to offer, he will lick the wounds and sores that come in encounters with the roughness of the world. He guards the sleep of his pauper master as if he were a prince. When all other friends desert, he remains. When riches take wings and reputation falls to pieces, he is as constant in his love as the sun in its journey through the heavens.

"If fortune drives the master forth an outcast in the world, friendless and homeless, the faithful dog asks no higher privilege than that of accompanying him to guard against danger, to fight against his enemies, and when the last scene of all comes, and death takes the master in its embrace and his body is laid away in the cold ground, no matter if all other friends pursue their way, there by his graveside will the noble dog be found, his head between his paws, his eyes sad but open in alert watchfulness, faithful and true even to death."
