The Saturday Night Joke

A guy fell asleep on the beach for several hours and got a horrible sunburn, specifically to his
upper legs. He went to the hospital and was promptly admitted after being diagnosed with second-degree burns.

With his skin already starting to blister, and the severe pain he was in, the doctor prescribed continuous intravenous feeding with saline,

electrolytes, a sedative, and a Viagra pill every four hours.

The nurse, who was rather astounded, asked, 'What good will Viagra do for him,
Doctor'?

The doctor replied, 'It won't do anything for his condition, but it'll keep the sheets off his legs.

If I had a business, I would appreciate an employee like Dean Crouch. And instead of firing his ass he would get a nice bonus.

Instead of accolades, a Florida sporting good store manager was given his walking papers after he stopped a man from running out of the store with a stolen handgun.

Dean Crouch, 32, sprang into action last month to physically stop a man later identified as Jason White from leaving his store with a .40-caliber Glock he was looking at but did not pay for, the Tallahassee Democrat reports. White, 24, who had earlier that day stolen two other handguns from an area pawn shop, had also attempted to steal two magazines for the Glock and some ammunition while at Academy.

20 So lemme ask you, Horde...

This whole "The Queen hates Trump" narrative that's floating out there....

That's gotta be pretty much bullshit, right? Only thing i can see that it's based on is that he didn't bow (which you're actually not supposed to by protocol, but lying liars lie), and that he "walked in front of her" which is a dubious claim at best based on bad camera angles and timing it just right for that one time he was half a step ahead of her because she slowed down a bit.

Is there anything else there? I think it was in the Piers Morgan interview where he said the meeting went twice as long as it was supposed to at 45'. That doesn't seem like the kind of thing anybody would do for someone they don't like, let alone the Queen who is notorious for scheduling her day down to the freaking second.

I am sure he has insighted and stories to tell the Queen that she would find interesting. He had a top rated television show, he was an owner of a professional football team, he sponsored boxing matches and beauty contests, he own ed casinos and golf courses, he a real estate magnate in New York City, he was elected President of the United States.

I'm sure she has plenty of questions for him and he doesn't need to bullshit her to impress her.

56 Greetings, Horde. Hoping everyone is having a good evening.

I tend not to do this, but I had a fairly catastrophic day today, and I just need to vent.

Pulling out of the oil change place, my car started shuddering and the engine wouldn't stay on. The oil change guys looked at it and couldn't find anything wrong. This being Saturday, very few car places are open, but there was one. Had the car towed there and fixed.

That was over $500 that I cannot afford. It means that various creditors will get nothing this month, and will want double next month. Which I also won't have.

Back when Anthony Bourdain committed suicide, there was a lot of talk about how inexplicable it was, as he had wealth and fame. Well, here's the other side. I have no money and no fame. Before you start counseling me, I have no plans to commit suicide, but the idea is starting to seem more attractive all the time.

I once thought I could do things that people would enjoy, and I would enjoy creating them and bask in some (very minor) acclaim.

Well, those dreams are dead--I'm a wage slave who will die an unknown--and I'm tired of fighting in a contest I can never win. Hell, I can't even come out even, I lose every time. Existence is Hell, and there's no getting out of it. This car thing is just the latest event in a string of events that keep beating on me over and over, never relenting, never a moment of happiness, never even a moment without a storm cloud.

Yes, I know, I could be a peasant in China or a starving Somali in Africa. But that knowledge doesn't help, really.

So, that was my Saturday. Thank you for listening. And please, please, no prayers. Every time someone says "I'll pray for you" that's when the Big Guy Upstairs says, "Oh, I forgot about him" and it's a giant back-hand to the back of the head.

Thanks again.
PS: Typed this in Notepad, sorry if this barrels me.

Some of the best inventions/products were totally by accident. 3M and Post-It notes comes to mind. They were looking for a super glue type product for paper. Discovered instead a paper glue that could stick-pull off, stick-pull off. Just think of how naked office computers would be today if Post-It notes had not been discovered/invented.

I bet there are a ton of other products we use daily that were discovered/invented by serendipitous accident.

They do make a generic Viage, sildanefil labelled for treating pulmonary hypotension. It's consideraly cheaper than brand name Viagra. Less than $1 per pill vs. $20 for branded shit.

But it's not too effective, I don't think. It also has some benefit for Raynaud's disease as well, I see.

It's a PDE-5 enzyme inhibitor, which is what regulates increasing blood flow to Mr. Happy. It's misunderstood to think it *causes* erections.

Nope, it just makes it much easier to get one. It the initial signals to start the process aren't there, it does nothing.

For that reason, it does little for psychological causes (like performance anxiety, for instance).

Ruin him as a warning to others as to what can happen. From what I've been hearing today it may be worse and possibly it was a set-up. (Note: we still don't know exactly what was said but absolutely it was taken out of context.) What I can't understand is why the he caved so quickly when he ought to have been telling the twitter SJW mob to get screwed. Every time somebody surrenders like that it just emboldens the nasty little shits.

Viagra also has a common side effect. "Blue vision" and increased light sensitivity. There is another enzyme, PDE-6 which is very close to PDE-5. -6 regulates the sensitivity of rods in the retina. It's how your eye system lowers the sensitivity when needed.

While it doesn't block it completely, it does have enough effect on the PDE-6 system in some people to cause noticeable light sensitivity and blue vision. Rods are most sensitive to blue light.

It's fascinating how complex the human body is, and how all this stuff is linked in complex ways.

BC, for an example of how things can change on a dime:

I live in a weekly motel on the side of the road. I lost my job driving Uber 6 weeks ago, due to Uber changing insurance companies to one with more stringent driving record regulations, 6 weeks ago. I was actually driving a customer somewhere, and the Uber app shut down, kicking me off of it.

So, been watching meager savings go out at an amazing pace. At this hotel, religious groups sometimes stop by on weekend mornings to hand out breakfast sandwiches and do prayers. Got a couple, and they asked me what to pray for in my case. Simple. A job. So, we all did.

One of the group hung back to ask me about work experience, so we had a short discussion about it. He said "that sounds like the kind of thing a friend of mine does, and he is looking to expand his business. Give me your number, and I'll have him call you". So I did, with very low expectations.

Well, his buddy called me this afternoon about 5:00, and we are going to lunch on Monday. Don't know how that will shake out, but it is amazing how things can change, quickly.

240 > I bet there are a ton of other products we use daily that were discovered/invented by serendipitous accident.

Teflon (polytetrafluorethylene) was discovered when someone noticed that an (apparently) empty cylinder of tetrafluoroethylene gas was way heavier than it should be.

They cut it open and discovered that the gas had polymerized to solid teflon. Counts because most people would never have noticed the discrepancy in weight.

Penicillin was discovered when a scientist noticed that his bacterial cultures had been contaminated with mold, and the mold had killed the bacteria. Counts, because most people would have probably just cursed the contaminated cultures and tossed them out.

Supposedly microwave cooking was invented when a guy working on a radar unit noticed that the candy bar in his pocket had melted. That effect would certainly have been noticed eventually anyway, so I'm not sure it counts.

259 When my husband and I got married in the early 80s, a friend of my husband's, who worked for Yoko, gave us the dining room table from John and Yoko's Palm Beach mansion. I guess she was redecorating.

We weren't Lennon fans, and the table was too big for our house, so we stuck it in a shed outside where it got a little damaged by termites. Even so, when we donated it to a charity we got a huge tax write off. I was shocked. This was not long after Lennon was shot, so I guess anything associated with him had value.

Sometimes I wonder what we could have sold it for.

I've been working on a browser plug-in to straighten quotes in m Copious Spare Time for about the last six months, so be sure to look for that in #twoweeks.

278 I really like the multifunction furniture. Right now, we're stuck in the house we raised four kids (and half the neighborhood) in. We have two dogs, neither one of which is suitable for an apartment. I'm not going to put down two dogs simply because they are inconvenient. In all honesty, the older dog will be lucky to make it to Thanksgiving; she has an inoperable cancer on one of her hind legs. But she's perfectly happy to lie out on the porch and watch the world go by and occasionally remind the younger dog who is the Alpha and who is the Beta.

It will be really nice to sell this awful white elephant and get a much smaller apartment. Less vacuuming, less dusting, less cleaning in general. Not to mention less room for Himself to hoard. I think he's getting ready for the revolution or something like that. (You do not want to know how many six packs of diet Pepsi he has stashed in the pantry.) Having multipurpose furniture would save lots of space. Less space, less rent. And, as demonstrated, almost all the pieces seem to be fairly easy to manipulate -- a very important feature at our age and state of decrepitude.

A small apartment, an internet connection, Amazon, local grocery delivery -- I think we will have a much easier old, old age than our parents. Not to mention four kids within reach who would do anything to keep Mom and Dad from moving in on them. (So much for the "smart" people who had either one or no kids because Mother Gaia.)

In application, then, flags are displayed on moving vehicles with the blue-star field always displayed towards the front of the vehicle. In this way, the flag appears to be blowing in the wind as the vehicle travels forward (flags are always attached to their flag poles on the blue field side). If the flag were not reversed on the right hand side of the vehicle, the vehicle might appear to be moving backwards (or "retreating").

Think about a real flag. The star field always goes next to the flag pole. So if you were marching forward carrying one, or had it mounted on a vehicle, the pole would have to face forward.

To the left of the flag, you'd see the stars on your left. But on the right side of the flag, you'd see them on your right.

That's the idea with the arm patches.

327 That guy who shot the cool, awesome tornado video is lucky to be alive. Incredibly foolish of him to do, and judging by how calm he was, it's inconceivable to me that he wouldn't have known what to do when faced with that situation. You GET OUT OF YOUR CAR and find the lowest lying ditch you can and spread yourself flat on the ground. You most certainly do not stay in the car and watch.

And I mean, I understand not knowing if you're not from an area that is prone to tornados, but his calm demeanor tells me he wasn't inexperienced with them.

328 How can a car move at all if it's in Park?

That's what I thought! But hubby just asked me.. was the key still in the ignition? Shit.. I don't remember. My car is push button so I don't have to worry about that. It may have still been in the ignition. So car is off, in Park but if the key is still in the ignition does it think it needs to go? Gah!!

331 > Still waiting for the backlash, boss.

Slept through the last election, did you?

Republicans now control 33 state governorships (16 Dem, 1 Independent), 33 state legislatures (16 Dem, 4 split), the Presidency, both Houses of Congress, and will soon control the Supreme Court for a couple of generations.

Only 26 percent of military personnel vote D, and those are disproportionatly from *non*-combat specialties. Similar proportions hold for law enforcement.

Gun owners are so lopsidedly Republican that it's not even funny, as are the people produce all the food, energy, and water, and the people who distribute those essential items.

While I don't want to see a civil war (and expect that such a war would be the end of the Republic), if it does occur it's going to be nasty, brutish, and short. And it won't be the failed baristas in skinny jeans and bandannas on the winning side.

Most likely outcome, IMO, would be something akin to Franco's Spain or Pinochet's Chile. There is no plausible outcome where the communists win.

333 Just on the topic of everyone's got their own bag of rocks to carry (ref: Darkness at the top of the Stairs, a very good Robert Preston flick) my day was pretty good, with one wet fart in the middle of it. Took my 6 year old grandson to a great waterpark, lots of water slides, wave pool, lazy river, great day for it since it was 103 today. (in the DFW area) Me and him had a great time! So, in the middle of it, notice daughter (his mother) is texting stupid shit to me, so I call and it's some financial contretemps and she's ranting. It's petty and solvable, not even worth going into. She starts screaming about the guy who lives with her who actually supports her, and I feel the need to point out that the only person who did anything wrong in this situation (petty as it was) was her, and she should consider that before she starts accusing people of shit. So she starts screaming that this is why she wants to kill herself, and when she does it will be all my fault, because I am so awful to her, and she wanted me to know her blood will be on my hands for as long as I live.

So I say basically, ooookaaayyyy and we haven't talked since and I figure the psychotic storm has blown over. If I sound rather blase' about something that most people would freak out about, consider that this is probably about the 50th time this has happened. But it still puts a damper on the day.

Being related to someone who's mentally ill really stinks, especially since it usually pops up every time everything else is going good.

I can't tell you that. My guess is that they wear more patches on the left now and the US patch has more room on the right . I could look into it, but that would be my guess. I know you wear your present unit patch on the left, and a combat unit you served with on the right. Back in the day you did not see a lot of the combat unit patches. Since Desert Storm and even more so since 9/11, they are a lot more common.

Well aimed and timed-on-target, fired for effect.

I'm sorry only that it landed on an otherwise honorable and stalwart member of Teh Horde, whose observation was in general, correct, but in specificity, completely lacking in local intel as to the character and nature of his not-so-generic target.

Had his target BEEN "generic", his point would hold.

Didn't seem to be that much of a tornado. It passes right over a stand of trees and left them standing.

399 This whole "The Queen hates Trump" narrative that's floating out there....

The Queen and DJT have a lot in common: they are both like John Wayne toilet paper, don't take shit off anybody.

It's pretty simple. A right-side-up one has a wide white stripe on top on the pole side, and an upside-down one has a narrow white stripe on top on the pole side.

Air conditioned cars have a device called a "throttle kicker". The A/C compressor takes a fair bit of power to run it. If the compressor kicks in while the engine is idling, it drags the idle speed down, and markedly so. The throttle kicker is designed to increase the idle speed when the compressor kicks in.

Now, on modern cars, that is all done via the ECM. In your case, it sounds like the programmed idle speed increase is too great, causing the car to lurch ahead in Drive. If the car is one of those that shuts the engine right off (to save emissions, "eyeroll, then that just complicates the issue.

418 Man. I went to town, and had a pizza this evening. Plump broad comes into the pizza place. blond hair, dark at the roots, cut like a Mohawk with a pony tail. Tattoos everywhere, hands, arms, and neck. Arms so black with ink it looked like she had been fisting a squid. Pretty disgusting sight.

And I had a good shop day, too. Took a junk auto frame, and made a nifty pipe rack out of it, by welding on legs made from scrap metal i had lying around. And welded some upright pegs on top, too, to keep stuff from rolling all over.

What's Wrong with NATO?

"What's Wrong with NATO?" New York Times Magazine, September 25, 1983.
https://nyti.ms/2Le8nrk

Excerpt:

If we have learned anything from the NATO experience of the last 30 years, it is the rediscovery of an old truth: Dependency corrupts and absolute dependency corrupts absolutely. To the degree that Europe has been dependent upon the United States, the European will has been corrupted and European political vitality has diminished. A reconstructed NATO could reverse that process. But it would have to be an all-European NATO, with the United States an ally but not a member.
