I didn't go to the greatest auto parts store in the world yesterday. It does not have a "cage room" off to the side full of guns and ammo.
I didn't ask about the mysterious Sig P365 that they also didn't have. I didn't buy a Ruger LCP instead just because. I didn't take down and add a little Hoppes to said LCP today that I didn't buy yesterday for $224, all in. This week was Star Super B week. Nice 1911 knock off in 9mm made by the now defunct but fondly remembered Star Bonifacio Echeverria, S.A.
Great pistols, one was made in 1970 and the other in 1972, accurate and the action is slick as butter. Once new, now old skool. Every time I take them out of storage they still impress me. Posted by: Hairyback Guy at July 15, 2018 07:09 PM (EoRCO) 31

Back to the range yesterday. I needed the break.
Put another box through the Star BM. It still wants to hammer bite me. Though it got me thinking, maybe I'm SUPPOSED to be wearing gloves with this gun? I mean it was police issue in Spain. Yup, wearing gloves, no blood lost, no accuracy lost, either. Good little pistol, all things considered. Also put two boxes through the Glock 36. Damn, that thing is like a laser. But it does buck. The G36 is actually smaller and lighter than the Star BM, while holding only one round less. Technology is cool. The rifle in the picture appears to be a spring-air rifle. The hold is still wrong of course. And spring-air guns do have some recoil-- the recoil goes back and then forward, a recoil pattern notorious for shaking apart scopes that are not built to take it.
The recoil is modest overall, but as a dumb kid I put the stock of a relatively weak spring-air rifle on the point of my chin and the spring-driven recoil nearly knocked me silly. The woman may actually be at some risk of a shiner. Posted by: Semi-Literate Thug at July 15, 2018 07:40 PM (t5m5e) 98

Also put two boxes through the Glock 36. Damn, that thing is like a laser. But it does buck. The G36 is actually smaller and lighter than the Star BM, while holding only one round less.
Technology is cool. Posted by: Mark Andrew Edwards at July 15, 2018 07:11 PM (34CI4) I love my Glock 36. Fits my hand perfectly and points naturally at the target. Not much bigger than an old school .380 ACP, such the Walther PPK/S, but chambered in .45ACP! It was what I carried as a Detective. That being said, it does buck a bit but I don't think that they are uncontrollable. The G36 is rather under-appreciated, but I think they are a great pistol. I have a question. As some of you know, I just purchased my first firearm in 36 years. A Ruger 10/22. I did buy an extra BX-1 10 round magazine, I wanted a couple of more but that's all the gun seller had in stock. I got to thinking that tomorrow when I go to the range, I'm going to be spending an awful lot of time reloading. He showed me a 25 round magazine, BX-25 (again only one in stock) that I didn't get. I went to the Ruger website today to look it up and there were wildly different reviews, with a large number saying that they sucked, jamming after only 3 or 4 rounds.
Does the Horde have any experience or knowledge of said magazine, or a really good alternative? Thanks! Posted by: Old Blue at July 15, 2018 08:31 PM (gEvQ8) 173

172 Old Blue, I have three bx25 mags, and all three work just fine. Like anything nowadays, it took about two mags each for break in. I also have a few Butler Creek 25 round mags, and they function great. These have the advantage of being "jungle clip" capable, with a stud and recess allowing two mags to be clipped together.

I very politely corrected some dumbass at Insty's that an 88 was an AA gun and not a 'howitzer', and some other dumbass "corrected" me with 'cannon' including a link to it being used in an antitank role and as a position gun against hard targets like buildings even though I had already talked to someone else about its antitank use and how the Allied bombing campaign meant fewer 88s shooting up Soviet and Allied tanks. So I linked the military Wiki about it being a Flak gun and pointed out I and the other commenter had already discussed its ground use. No reply to that.

What about "Gun Bunnies"?
Posted by: Bert G at July 15, 2018 08:38 PM (yzxic) I was in a Fire Support Team (abbreviated as "FIST") and worked closely with the infantry. We were basically smart grunts and carried radios and blew $h!t up by dropping artillery projectiles on said $h!t. We called ourselves "Fist F*ckers" and the gun crews "Gun Bunnies." Since bunnies and machismo don't exactly coincide, I imagine the gun crews weren't particularly thrilled by that term. Field Artillery = "Cannon Cockers" as a generic non-insulting nickname. Notsothoreau, first priority is to absolutely insist on your approach of shoot-before-buy. That's the key.
Then, at least at first you'll be limited to whatever the range rents (some have a lot of handguns, some don't). Beyond that, plenty here will have better ideas (I don't carry and don't focus on carry-suitable hardware). Would only say do not over look revolvers, and do not ignore that you might want your carry guns to be shootable and fun enough that you'll both practice and become proficient with them. Some of the lightweight revolvers and even semi-autos (as discussed by others above) are "for carrying/having, not shooting" - meaning they're unpleasant enough to shoot that it's unlikely you'll practice much. AlaBAMA, if you're talking handguns, really not that much cleaning involved, neccessarily.
If you're talking handguns, using factory ammo, really really not a big deal. First, most modern guns don't want/need that much cleaning. Second, a quick wipedown, a snake through the bore and/or cylinder chambers, maybe a drop of lube (for semis) - that's really it. Plus, gun shops these days often have cleaning services. Have never used them, but for the cleaning-averse, perfect. Once a year, at most, pay someone to do a full disassembly and cleaning. See - I've solved your problem. A range report is expected for next week's thread .... Posted by: rhomboid at July 15, 2018 09:11 PM (QDnY+) 259

If something doesn't go bang in my Glocks (and Sigs, and personal favorite brand - Rugers) then I know it's the ammo. If the Springfield acts funny I always figure it's the gun first. Moron Robbie, I don't think it's an Apollo mission to disassemble/reassemble an XD, but it's not as straightforward as doing a 1911. Just a few roll pins etc. for which I'd prefer to have the right tools (which I don't - some tools and general purpose punches and gunsmith screwdriver set). So the combo of having to get more tools (Cheap Bastid guiding principle) and having to focus and learn how to do it properly (Lazy Bastic guiding principle) have, so far, deterred me.
Of course I'll need a good set of starter and roll pin punches to build the ARs I'm gonna build some day, so ..... hmmm. Posted by: rhomboid at July 15, 2018 09:29 PM (QDnY+) 299

Police Try To Take Veteran's Guns Without A Warrant. He Didn't Let Them https://bit.ly/2uos8Tz
Iraq war veteran Leonard Cottrell Jr. says that last month New Jersey police tried to confiscate his firearms without a warrant - and he did not let them take them. Two police officers visited his home "because his 13-year-old son had made a comment at school about the Millstone Middle School's security, and the officers wanted to confiscate Cottrell's firearms as part of an investigation," NJ.com reported. Cottrell, who legally owns a shotgun and a handgun, is a disabled U.S. Army veteran who served multiple tours during "Operation Iraqi Freedom." Cottrell says that his wife let the officers into their home and let them search their sons' room where they did not find any weapons but then the officers tried to take his firearms, which "he has all the correct permits to own." "No one from the state was going to take my firearms without due process," Cottrell said, according to NJ.com. The police's attempt to confiscate Cottrell's firearms comes after Democrat Governor Phil Murphy signed into law a bill that makes it easy for law enforcement to confiscate firearms without due process. Also on your first day on a new job, right after orientation/onboarding, you have to fight the biggest guy there - you don't have to win, just draw blood - or else you end up being passed around like a pack of cigarettes for the rest of your tenure.
I worked at that company (it's an anagram of 'Sysco Foods'). They hired some wanna be tough guy as senior developer. That Friday I had to give a talk about something. At the end he tore my talk apart. Fair enough, I'm not a public speaker. But then after that humilation and we're back to our cubicles, he starts busting my balls over other random shit. What was that tale about Davy Crockett? I think it involved killing two wild animals, one a bear, with one shot by splitting the bullet in two or something. Or maybe it was Daniel Boone. On the Beverly Hillbillies, "ricochet shooting" was a favorite pastime. They'd light matches with a bullet after bouncing it off a rock. They thought shooting skeet with a shotgun was just cheating. Posted by: boulder t'hobo at July 15, 2018 09:56 PM (6FqZa) Hook your thumb through your belt loop. Hold a rifle at your hip and hook your finger through the trigger guard. Apply forward tension on the rifle until it trips the trigger, which sends the rifle back under recoil, until it is arrested and overcome by the force of you continuing to pull it forward. That's bump firing. A bump stock is a stock that mechanically assists that process without using the belt loop. Posted by: Guzalot at July 15, 2018 10:04 PM (schB/) .... I've had this discussion a lot. When the government tells me that a pedophile can't live near a school, have a computer or put out a pumpkin at Halloween, what I feel like they are really telling me is that the pedo is not reformed and likely to commit the same crime again. That means, to me anyway, that they should still be in prison. Likewise, when you tell me that someone is not to be trusted with Constitutional rights, you are telling me they should still be locked up. You know, it just now occurred to me that I'm a Moron, and this is the Gun Thread, and I happen to have a new 80% firearm in its preorder phase right now.
It's called the CS12-80 80% Combat Shotgun, and it's a hybrid of a Mossberg 500 12ga pump action shotgun and an AR15. Same action and reliability of the Mossy 500, but with the furniture and controls of an AR15. Easier to handle, intuitive to use, AND you can build yourself a nice shorty using a Shockwave parts kit (14" barrel) and an AR arm brace (like the nice new adjustable length ones from SB Tactical). It's never been a shotgun before you finish it, and it was designed to be over 26" in OAL length with a 14" barrel and an AR arm brace. Parts kits are readily available from many sources (eBay, gun parts houses like EveryGunPart.com, etc), and the receiver set comes with the jig you'll need to finish them using a router and hand drill (or better yet, a router and a drill press). We also sell the cutting tools you'll need, but since there is nothing proprietary involved there, you can buy them locally if you prefer. I know this seems a bit spamy, but it's on topic, and I've been commenting here sporadically since before Jug Ears usurped the Cherry Blossom Throne, so I'm not some rando asshole (I'm a known asshole). If you want to help a fellow Moron out, and stick it to the man just a little, you might wander over to the site my name links to above and see if you like what you see.
