Thai Rescuers Save Four More Trapped Boys from Cave, Bringing Total of Those Saved to Eight

Originally, there were 12 boys trapped, plus their coach. Now eight boys have been gotten out of the cave, and just four more boys and their coach remain.

The boys, ages 11-16, and their 25-year-old coach became stranded when they went exploring inside after a practice game. Monsoon flooding blocked off their escape and prevented rescuers from finding them for almost 10 days.

Two divers were assigned to each child to help them navigate the dangerous, narrow passageways.

On Friday, the death of a former Thai navy SEAL underscored the risks. The diver, the first fatality of the rescue effort, was working in a volunteer capacity and died on a mission to place oxygen canisters along the route.

I guess the cave passages are too narrow to permit a kid to wear a tank on his back, and he must take air from the cannisters placed on the ground along the route?

I was wondering about this -- just how deep is this cave, anyway, to present such a formidable challenge to escape? Well, it's long:

The canisters are placed strategically thoughout the escape route, which is about two-and-a-half miles long.

Here's a handy InfoGraphic:

And on the former Thai SEAL who died while pre-positioning those oxygen tanks:

By the way: Trump tweeted about this. Which of course made the media decide it was against saving the boys.

No, not really. But they did begin questioning whether the US, which always sends assistance and expertise in any deadly situation, really was doing what it always does as a matter of routine.

The media began crying #FakeNews and questioning whether the US is really helping.

Turns out: We are.

Will The Hill retract its pissy and cowardly pseudo-denial of Trump's tweet?

That last bit via Stephen Green at PJ Media.

54 Unimportant correction: it would be "air" not "oxygen" in the tanks. Pretty sure. There is no situation in which pure oxygen is used. For dives to depth, where pressure is higher and nitrogen absorption becomes an issue, exotic gases or mixes are often used.

But I believe all of this diving is at atmospheric pressure (very shallow depth of water, thus not much pressure).

Why did the coach take these young boys to such a secluded place?

Posted by: Regular joe at July 09, 2018 07:23 PM (7PllL)

According to a report, the cave is a popular tourist attraction. The kids went in like other tourists. Apparently it was also a team-building exercise, and the boys were tight with the coach. Suddenly the monsoons hit and the water came in too fast. So not able to get out, they instead went the other way to get clear from the rushing water.

And they kept going. and going. and going.

I've done some cave diving and taught some people to dive. Well quite a few people.

The single biggest problem I ever encountered was panic and if someone panics in a tight passage like that where there is no easy surface the odds of an unhappy ending are very high. And not just for the panicked. Remember, some of these kids don't even know how to swim let alone dive.

Not to mention removing any real necessity to do anything other than keep your eyes shut and breath makes it even easier. If binding and gagging were an option I'd go with that but this sounds like a good compromise.

First of all, he's just 25 y/o and while officially an adult, he doesn't exactly have years of experience behind him. He's actually the assistant coach and was told by boss coach to "take the kids on an adventure" after practice. So he took them to the cave where all the cool kids go. Seems you get bragging rights if you go to the back of that cave and scratch our name on the wall as proof you made it all the way.

I'm sure the last thing on his mind was the possibility of the cave flooding.

264 First off. It is not the fault of the boys' coach. The cave is well known, touristy and well traveled. It is a fun and adventurous place to take boys. My understanding is that the heavens opened up well away from where they were, and began to flood the cave without them knowing. Could the coach have been more careful? Yes. of course. But let's all take a step back and understand that this is Thailand, a very underdeveloped country. Taking the football team on a bike ride and cave exploration is fine. Sometimes even the most easygoing hike in a city park can go horribly wrong. So let's just step off brothers.

The second thing: I was keenly aware that international military was responding and assumed that US Navy was one of the first responders from outside Siam. When Trump said that, I nodded and said: "of course". When the media said " Trump isn't doing anything , blah, blah, blah," I was momentarily enraged, but then thought " these dickwads will get their comeuppance. And lo and behold.

Fuck all these MSM douches. The Thai seals, the Navy rescue divers and all the other people who are assisting as rescuers from whatever military they come from? Saints, one and all. And the Thai retired seal diver? He looks over us in heaven. If I were Trump? I would offer him a revered place in Arlington if his family wishes it. If not I would offer posthumous citizenship or military honors.

270 234 Curmudgeon, I recall a pretty small swim-through (day dive, Cozumel, beautiful conditions) I did years ago ..... even that was not my favorite part of the dive. Probably just 15-20 feet in length.

I also don't dive in lousy conditions, but I was just saying that things like bad visibility etc don't have the potential to cause panic.

Swimming hundreds of yards or more into small caves (like the cave divers do in cenotes in Mexico or FL) is about the only thing I can think of that I would never even attempt to do.

We must have gone to the same place. And the current just carried you along, right?

I will give the Fiesta Americana resort immense credit for their dive masters, who shepherded us dive novices through all kinds of mishaps, and made it comical rather than terrifying.

California, on the other hand, is cold water, hit or miss viz, and kelp aplenty. I usually just follow the anchor line down from the boat, practice my navigating until I start running out of air, and take the anchor line back.

On other hand, it might be a good motivator to get them out.
