Because that can only be accomplished with surveillance and planned action. It wasn't random.
Meaning it is criminal harassment and probably stalking by statute.

There's supposed to be one in the Vatican, but I haven't found a link to that (not that I looked very hard). I wonder if the picture above is taken from that one.

The blurb at the National Gallery (the American version) also says that this is a sister piece to another about the Betrayal, here:

76 if the left isn't going to start killing judges (and others, like in the banana republics) ... then the harassment act will hurt them. It would be better if the source of funding for this particular group could be found, and the leaders called out.

Of course a lot of witnesses to Hillary crimes have been killed, or intimidated into silence. That has been in operation (covertly) for decades, ongoing with Mueller and his thugs, and hard to say how many other more quiet threats. But openly harassing children of the judge ... because TDS ... bad move for them.

I'd be wary of believing non-canonical texts. Some of them say some pretty wacky things. Like Paul having his head cut off by Nero and milk pouring out instead of blood, and then he picks up his head and leaves. A lot of these legends were written too late to be first or second century, and those closer to the situation than we are thought the claimed authorship was doubtful, hence the term pseudepigrapha.

Possibly a lot of both was allegorical rather than literal - one ascribed certain miracles to a saint in the expectation that the readers would recognize the story from elsewhere and understand it as an assertion that the saint had the same qualities as the saint in the original source you lifted the story from, rather than expected your readers to believe that the events literally took place.

A lot of medieval history was written as allegory too.

195 Makes sense. For some reason, in art Peter is usually depicted as an older man.
Posted by: Steve and Cold Bear at July 10, 2018 10:07 AM (/qEW2)

My take... Peter was the only one, that we know of, who had a family and an established reputation and career, indicating maturity. He was the "leader" of the Disciples, also indicating maturity. In art, the best way to depict maturity is age. Also, in those cultures, Age = Wisdom & Maturity. This is helpful if you aren't going to use attribute as the artist choose, here.

In contrast, John is always depicted as a very young man, possibly teenage. This is because he lived into the late AD 90s--sixty years after the Crucifixion. This is why many people think the person next to Christ in Leonardo's Last Supper is a woman (thank you, Dan Brown). It's really John (think a woman playing Peter Pan), as anyone who has read the Story would know.

I agree, Huck, but...

The art threads and the book threads are my favorites. I like it when we talk about not-politics, even though we all come here for the politics.

This particular drawing just doesn't provide much grist for conversation. It's a fine picture of a scene. We can talk about the characters, why is Peter bald and did Thomas go to India, so we did that.

We could start a fight about the legitimacy of the Papacy and the whole "Upon this rock I found my church", but we've already done the Thirty Years' War this week.

There's just not that much there. I will say, as it depicts a miracle, it's an allegory for all those Thai boys getting out safely.

229 I always loved this Thomas/Jesus interaction. Jesus doesn't say, "You doubted, so you're out!" And Thomas doesn't say, "Mm-hmm... Okay, yeah -- I'm convinced." Instead Jesus invites Thomas in his doubt to come closer, and when Thomas' doubts are dispelled, he falls to his knees and declares, "My Lord and my God!"

A beautiful depiction of a savior with tremendous grace, showing great latitude to the human need to be convinced, and also the rightful worship of God once that conviction is determined.

(2) Would a potential candidate for the SC, knowing full well the huge stakes involved, be tweeting at all, let alone early in the next morning after his nomination was announced? I get the daughter outrage completely, but I dunno about this.

331 Kennedy looks at the list of 25 and there are x on the list that he knows. He's ready to retire and knows his replacement will be a Trump nominee (he can't last six more years). So he puts in the good word for one or two.

Quite plausible.

But a deal -- I'll quit only if you pick Kavanaugh -- is not plausible.

332 Carpenter/mason before power tools =/= soi-boi

OK, this is a legit question from a marginally well-read Druid.

Joseph was a carpenter, is this why we assume Jesus was?

We see him being born, we're with him up 'til the age of about 12 when he's dressing down the rabbis about the errors of their ways, and then we don't see him again until he's an adult wandering from town to town stirring up trouble.

Is it assumed that he spent some of the meantime in a regular vocation?

335 It always bothers me how pretty artists depict Jesus as. I get it, they're trying to show inner purity and holiness, and this is the Risen Christ so he's transcendent and all but still. Isaiah depicts the messiah as someone no one would look at and consider great or beautiful. And he should at least look a LITTLE Jewish.

341 That Tadema of Moses and the Princess of Egypt is really nice. There is lot more going on that simply Moses being presented.

The mass of people across the Nile are probably Jewish slaves. The doe-eyed woman playing is looking directly at the audience while the guy next to her who is helping carry the Princess looks a bit worried. The lotus theme is running amok. Her palanquin has the head of Pharaoh on it even as her chair has lion legs.

Nice little detail on the footrest as the Princess has her feet trampling an enemy, more than likely from the caricature a Jew, And here she is welcoming as her son a Jewish child.

Just noticed one of the maidens presenting Moses has in blue faience an ankh, the symbol of life.

342 I really doubt this. It doesn't strike me as how S. Ct. nominations work. Quite apart from that, if Kennedy was going to insist on a say in the nominee, wouldn't he pick someone with his fairly unique swing-vote positions to preserve his legacy? There's no indication that Kavanaugh is that guy.
Posted by: Bear with Assymetrical Balls at July 10, 2018 10:43 AM (iys0/)

Somewhere online or on the Sirius, I listened to a SC watcher who provided stats for how SC voted. He had compiled records on each current SC justice voting records and the percentage of times that they voted with the other judges on the court.

Kennedy voted 71% of the time with the conservative, originalist side of the court. I believe Roberts is at 81%, I don't know Alito and Thomas' score.

He noted that even though Ginsburg was at 17%, one must acknowledge that Ginsburg did vote 17% of the time with Roberts , Thomas, etc. He said that there are a lot of 9-0 decisions , typically on smaller cases that don't garner the left wing, media attention.

422 OK, this is a legit question from a marginally well-read Druid.

It was fairly normal practice for sons to take over their father's business, so it is assumed that he was at least trained as a carpenter-mason (The Greek word used for Joseph's trade actually covers both specialties). Also, he does use a fair number of metaphors taken from masonry, which suggests familiarity with the trade.

All the hints we get about Jesus' life prior to the beginning of his ministry suggest that he lived a fairly unremarkable life - Mary seems to have been the only person that remembered him schooling the rabbis, you may notice. His fellow villagers in Nazareth didn't seem to think he was anything special and got pretty irritated when he started preaching to them. One of the epistles says that there was nothing about Jesus on the outside that would make us desire him, which in addition to indicating that there wasn't anything special to look at suggests to me that he didn't stand out in other areas either.

I've always thought that those around him probably considered him just a quiet, unusually well-behaved kid who knew his Torah well. Other kids probably resented him a little...

423 298 264 55 I'm a bit surprised that an Italian artist made such an obvious error in his depiction - in the gospel account, the wound in the side was still clearly visible, such that Thomas could place his hand in it.

Posted by: Tom Servo at July 10, 2018 09:42 AM (V2Yro)

That always creeped me out. That Thomas felt he needed to place his hand in it. I mean...ewwww. Maybe the artist was skeeved by it too, so we went with something more pleasing. Artistic license.
Posted by: platypus, gumdrop gorilla channel at July 10, 2018 10:45 AM (zCpUM)

But Thomas never did place his fingers or hand into the Wounds. Once Jesus appeared to the Apostles again, with Thomas there, he fell to his knees and declared "My Lord and My God!" That was enough for him to believe.

In order to believe that the Catholic laity would fight for the end of contraception, then that would mean the left would consider the Christians on the right to be dummy idiots who blindly take orders from Rome, which is, formally, opposed to contraception.

454 During the Renaissance, with the re-emergence of Classicism, Christ was modeled after Apollo. Apollo was the god of wisdom, healing, art, and the Sun, and youth. All these things meld well into Christ. Not a god, but God. He is wise, healed the sick and lame. He is the Great Architect and Creator. And He is the ultimate Light of the World. Agelessness is a symbol of purity, which is why Mary looks very young when she's supposed to be an old woman. Michelangelo was referring to Apollo when he chose to make Christ beardless in his Last Judgement in the Sistine Chapel.

He has also been modeled after Jupiter.

Like Grey Fox said, its a reasonable presumption since that was standard in the day, and a lot of what we hear about the disciples and Jesus (which is not in the Bible) is based on tradition, stories passed down by people from the time. They don't have any Biblical evidence and need not be believed, cannot be used for any theological arguments but its not unreasonable to assume that people would have talked about bits we didn't see in scripture.

Its like the iconic, traditional depictions of what the disciples looked like; probably based on people who knew them, passing on the info.

460 Possible explanation.

Dems know Senate is bad for them, only a question of whether GOP gains 3, or 6 or 8, seats, in November. Plus, lots of big $$$$ is behind or at least sympathetic with the insane tantrum and its performers.

So Schumer really doesn't have any good options other than going along with the ridiculous lynch mob against Kavanaugh. One more thing: since the information environment ("press", pop culture, everything) is so grossly distorted to serve whatever Dem hysteria or fantasies du jour are prevailing, the down-side risks for them of this absurd and despicable behavior are small.

Been that way for quite a while. But the Dems' "appeal" is getting down to really unvarnished bigotry, ignorance, authoritarian impulses. Worse than before.

465 All the hints we get about Jesus' life prior to the beginning of his ministry suggest that he lived a fairly unremarkable life - Mary seems to have been the only person that remembered him schooling the rabbis, you may notice.

I think this speaks to the verse in Luke, that "Mary stored (treasured) these things in her heart." Luke the physician, who wrote the Gospel of Luke and the Book of Acts, did not meet Jesus physically, prior to his crucifixion. He was Greek, and apparently was a traveling companion of Paul on several of his missionary journeys. But it is not without reason to think that he spent some time with Mary, and she trusted him enough to tell him the stories of Jesus' childhood.

Also, can you imagine having a piece of furniture built by Christ?

OK, this is a legit question from a marginally well-read Druid.

Joseph was a carpenter, is this why we assume Jesus was?

We see him being born, we're with him up 'til the age of about 12 when he's dressing down the rabbis about the errors of their ways, and then we don't see him again until he's an adult wandering from town to town stirring up trouble.

Is it assumed that he spent some of the meantime in a regular vocation?

Of course, when he saw the real risen Jesus he just collapsed and worshiped Him, but that was the boast.

It'll be obvious to everyone but the hard left that the hard left tilt of the Democratic Party didn't work. Those not dedicated to every new fad on the far left will wrest control of the party from the hard left, but the hard left won't just give up. 525 I have to say that the Dems are coming apart at the seams in a way that I haven't seen before, though.

So are Republicans. I have a theory that we may be watching the beginning of the end for political parties as we know them.

526 Male lions are only good at one thing, killing other big cats. Bengals
beat the larger Siberians because they have more bouts under their belt.
Polar bears are mean but have a relatively svelte swimmer's build.

Bengal Tigers 600 pounds
Polar bears 1500 pounds

My money is on the bear.

I think Donnelly will make it in IN. I'm not hearing much enthusiasm for the challenger.

Best thing for Donnelly is probably for Kavanaugh to get a floor vote before Nov. If Donnelly votes Yes - I think he keeps his job.

531 Yep. That is why Terry McAuliffe staged the Charlottesville Lynching. Trump was polling 27% approval with blacks for the three months leading up to that. With that known, BOLO for another NAZI - Racist staged show somewhere around late October. Pretty sure Soros knows how to pull these things off.

The hysteria about birth control (Which is a question of subsidy, not banning) is along the same lines. The Commiecrats have planned Agit-Prop down pat.

But at last, I think people are wising up about it.

534 Why couldn't they have done a week ago what they did these past two days?

Infrastructure. Setting up aid stations, planting O2 tanks.

Also, the pumping over the week got the water levels down, which helped.

Also, this was a completely risky attempt, they didn't know it would work. They only started it because more rain is coming and it was thought to be the least risky thing.

It's only in hindsight that it's obvious this would work.

Unless the FEDS get involved, the answer will be no. It was a Dem Governor that orchestrated the lynching and the current Dem Governor will see to it that it the meme remains in place. Notice that none of the trials have actually occurred. Sort of like Mueller never going to court.

The Republicans have a low-key struggle going on between their Globalist and Nationalist elements.

The GOP have had these kind of infighting events before: Taft Vs. Dewey in the late 1940's, with Ike as the compromise President. Goldwater vs. Rockefeller in the 1960's, which ultimately led to Reagan. And the Bushyrovies going overboard with globalism led to Trump.

The ideal future Republican will understand the need to tell the Wall Street Journal globalist greedheads to stuff it, while at the same time not going too much the other way into isolationism.

Marcus Luttell was on F&F this morning and he said that he trained often with the Thai SEALS and they are absolutely excellent at what they do.

It was over a full day before the boys' parent's even knew they were missing. It then took almost a week to locate exactly where in the cave they were, remember they were 2.5 miles into the cave, having been chased further back due to rising water from a monsoon downpour. Then it took days to stage the rescue and to also get O2 , etc into the cave to keep the kids alive and also they have pumped millions of gallons of water out to lower water levels in sections of the cave.

I think it is miraculous that they got anyone out.
