Weekend Gun Thread

daily-man-up-20180626-123.jpg

***

Cognitive bias and the gun debate.

I teach a course at my Canadian university on the Psychology of Thinking and in this course, we discuss topics like concept formation, decision making, and reasoning. Many of these topics lend themselves naturally to the discussion of current topics and in one class last year, after a recent mass shooting in the US, I posed the following question:

“How many of you think that the US is a dangerous place to visit?”
About 80% of the students raised their hands. This is surprising to me because although I live and work in Canada and I’m a Canadian citizen, I grew up in the US; my family still lives there and I still think it’s a reasonably safe place to visit. Most students justified their answer by referring to school shootings, gun violence, and problems with American police. Importantly, none of these students had ever actually encountered violence in the US. They were thinking about it because it has been in the news. That were making a judgment on the basis of the available evidence about the likelihood of violence.

There isn't room for debate let alone discussion when every gun is an "assault weapon".

There is, of course, only one answer to that gut-wrenching question. Yet, Everytown, Moms Demand Action, and the students of MSD have chosen to trumpet the mythical panacea of banning high-capacity firearms, instead of confronting what is readily apparent: A gun — any gun — used to kill or injure someone is, for all intents and purposes, an assault weapon.

Make no mistake: Implementing universal background checks; improving the quality of (and removing the barriers to) mental health care; and eliminating access to weapons made for the battlefield would likely save some lives. But as long as we continue to condone personal firearms of any shape or size, we’ll remain trapped in a brutal, heart-breaking version of “Groundhog Day.”

And we’ll have only ourselves to blame.

The Weekend Gun Thread received the following this past week from Lurker Dan, a FFL holder. An open letter.

Dear Sheep,
I think that it’s time that you’ve had a few things explained to you. We understand that you’re aware of the wolf, but it seems that you’ve been privileged to have had the sheedog's protection for too long. It is actually very rare that you suffer the consequences of a direct attack. We realize that you can appreciate them from afar, but that’s different. And you’ve likely have never had to repel a wolf yourself. Some of us wear uniforms and are obvious to you (we know because we often see and feel your scorn), but the vast majority of us are operating in your blind spot...............

Several teachable moments in this story. h/t redc1c4

Troy George Skinner, 25, arrived at the girl’s home in Richmond, Virginia last Friday, while armed with a knife, pepper spray and duct tape, according to Goochland County police.

He had smashed the glass door and was reaching inside to unlock it when the girl’s mother fired her handgun, striking him in the neck. He survived.

Skinner had first met the girl on Discord, a platform and chat site for gamers. After several months, she stopped talking to him, despite Skinner’s attempts to continue contact.

“He was not invited here, he was not expected here, he had been told in the past that this daughter no longer wished to communicate with him,” said Goochland Sheriff James Agnew at a news conference on Monday.

Last week the Weekend Gun Thread was asking hypothetical questions for a hypothetical friend relating to .357 Magnum and .38 Special ammo.

The response was wonderful both on the thread and the "in-box".

A very good article .38 Special and .357 Magnum Self-Defense Ammo Ballistics Test. h/t RAs

Revolver fans rejoice! It’s been a long time coming, but we’re finally ready to show you the results of our ballistics gelatin tests for .38 Special and .357 Magnum self-defense ammo.

For this batch, we tested 38 loads total — 20 are .357 Magnum and 18 are .38 Special. The post for our previous ballistic gelatin tests outlines all of the detailed specifics of our test protocol and explains both the value and limitations of gel testing. If you are unfamiliar with how these tests work, I highly recommend looking over that article before moving on to the results here. You will also be able to see the results of 146 semi-auto loads that we tested covering popular self-defense ammo in .380 ACP, 9mm, .40 S&W, and .45 ACP.

Many of you use the internet for shopping. Where do you find your ammo and other accessories? Lucky Gunner, Target Sports USA, Palmetto State Armory? Or do you shop at ammo.com or Cheaper Than Dirt?

Hoppes 9, gun cleaning patches and .38 Special ammo, tips and stories can be sent to petmorons at gmail dot com.

7 Went to a local gun show, picked up a Lee Enfield Mark IV. Couldn't find a true SMLE but, I did okay.

Battered but very much a shooter.

The down side, though, here in CA, even a Lee Enfield is registered and CA wants to know the make and model of your gun safe. Which, I didn't think much of until I realized that once the state knows make and model, they can make a rough estimate of how many firearms one owns.

Looking forward to picking up the Lee Enfield, but, this is probably my last gun purchase while I live in CA.

Absolutely astonishing.
Thugs operate fearlessly, hitting waitresses, throwing drinks and stealing hats from minors.
That crap has to stop.
BTW no charges were being filed against the hat stealer until the public put pressure on the sheriff, who literally had to be threatened in to doing his job.

21 "Where do you find your ammo and other accessories?"

ammunitiontogo.com. Someone on another forum years ago recommended it because he works there, and the prices were OK, no reason beyond that.

Also https://ammoseek.com/ and another aggregator sort of federated search site that I can't remember at the moment; they don't sell anything themselves but run a search to find price/round at other vendors.

Honestly, I usually just wait for 9mm to go on sale at Dunhams and get a couple of boxes. Saves on shipping and it's just a few blocks away.

29 I bought the Ruger PC carbine today. All they had left was the display model so after inspection I told them to pack it up, I'll take it. Of course I bought it because it comes with a Glock magazine well. It's sold with the Ruger mag well installed.

So I get home and I proceed to take it down to replace the Ruger mag well to replace it with the Glock. Only takes a few minutes after you read the directions. Got it in and tried to put my Glock mag in but it would not insert. I thought I had done something wrong and then I realized that someone at the store must have done it already when they had it on display . Did the replace process again and good to go. Is it selfish that I want my five minutes back?

I have three already, hence the 90 rounds fired. Unfortunately under the Glock Military/LE discount program you can only order extra magazines for the pistol you are buying and there is a limit of 6 extra mags. That gives me 9 15 rounders for the pistol that also fit in the carbine so I should be OK.

66 It takes a prepared mindset - and/or personal fear - to actually drop the hammer on someone. Part of Marines and Army infantry training develops that mindset. Even then some hesitate - even in actual combat.

As a corpsman I more than once counseled Marines who had just killed a V. C. - and knew it was their kill. Too many stories about people in their own homes having their own guns taken away by bad guys. Bad guys don't always run when the gun is pointed at them.

Carrying or owning should not be a matter of "I'll feel better.", but "I'll kill the SOB and answer for it later." This may be sexist, but men are better about this than women. I'll forgive the waitress for letting the as...le walk.

Derbyshire told some truths that were uncomfortable, but truths nonetheless. He more or less recapitulated what I told my European bride when we moved to the U.S. She thought we'd have to get guns just to routinely protect ourselves (as whites have to do in South Africa today), as we were moving to a city with a sky-high murder rate. I told her that where we'd be living it wasn't going to be necessary, and then I gave her the Derbyshire talk.

I buy most of my ammo on GunBroker, AIM Surplus and local pawn/gun shops that I educated on what I need.

Didn't make it this weekend, but shot my M&P Shield 9mm for the first time last weekend. Nice, easy to handle little gun. Gonna encourage my daughter to get one. She seems a bit resistant to buy a gun so far, not sure why. She works in downtown Detroit.

Today wearing the holster, preparing for the day I actually carry.

81 As a corpsman I more than once counseled Marines who had just killed a V. C. - and knew it was their kill. Too many stories about people in their own homes having their own guns taken away by bad guys. Bad guys don't always run when the gun is pointed at them.

As previously recounted, my late father received a battlefield commission on Iwo Jima after his company had suffered 85% casualties. I once asked him if he'd ever known he'd killed somebody.

Only once, he replied. He said usually everybody was blasting away, and so it was hard to tell who'd actually got somebody. But once he was the first to see some guy come hotfooting toward his unit, and shot him before anyone else had noticed him.

I guess under those circumstances it wasn't as traumatic as it would have been otherwise.

Also, it was kill or be killed. The first night on Iwo Jima he told his company (he was first sergeant) to pair off, and for one guy to stay awake while the other slept. I was visiting a friend and his wife in LA during the most recent riots. It turned out that while he lives far away from downtown, the bruthas have figured out how to use the metro system to find fresh prey, and the rioters were only a mile away from his house.

It is more accurate than I am and its weight makes recoil light. Plus it came with a 10 round box mag. Found 2 more mags. What I like about the Enfield is its smooth, quick to cycle bolt. I run a couple of mags through it a few times each year. Bore remains shiny.

By all means, shoot it. The Type 38 is 6.5 mm Jap and has the Jap symbols for "38" stamped and stacked on the chamber while the Type 99 is 7.7 mm Jap and has the Jap symbols for "99" stamped side by side.

The 7.7 mm Jap is close to our .30-O6.

Be careful though, some of the GI bring backs were training rifles only and have no rifling in the barrel and are not meant to shoot. Hence the old wives tales of Arisaka's blowing up when shot. The real Arisaka's are some of the strongest bolt action rifles ever made.

Take it to a gunsmith, have them give it a once over and check head space, and if the rifle checks out, shoot it.

It's what it's made for.

B.) NO POLITICS. Aside from the occasional sideways slight (usually from Gene), there's no SJW shit. Wonderful. And,
iii.) The family loves each other and even if they do dumb things to each other, the affection is clear.

no, one officer demanded it, and everyone thought it meant them too.

They are good rifles, and very sturdy, except for the trainers that were meant for practice blanks only, and the ones made at the very end.

They are very nice to shoot.

This question about cognitive bias, it's so fundamental to all of this. I am fond of telling people, when we've had floods here in this area, out of towners are asking me if I'm getting around in a boat, as if the whole metro area is under water.

It's amazing, where I work, it's probably about as dangerous as any area of this country. When I leave the building in the evening, in winter, there's a legit reason to be concerned, walking to my car after dark, but a little situational awareness goes a long way.

On any given day, there's going to have been at least one murder within a five mile radius of me. But you know what? I'm a middle aged white guy. You know how many middle aged white guys get murdered in the area where I work?

Pretty close to 0, year in and year out.

217 Be careful though, some of the GI bring backs were training rifles only and have no rifling in the barrel and are not meant to shoot. Hence the old wives tales of Arisaka's blowing up when shot. The real Arisaka's are some of the strongest bolt action rifles ever made.

Take it to a gunsmith, have them give it a once over and check head space, and if the rifle checks out, shoot it.

It's what it's made for.

I'm a wannabe filmmaker and working with Super 8, although obviously and hopelessly outdated, is a great way (and film schools' recommended way) to really learn how to work with film and all the lighting considerations it requires. You learn how to use film speed considerations, your camera's iris, a light meter, and other tools as well.

Then in turn, those skills can be used to obtain great images with modern-date digital footage.

Braenyard is right, at #266. If you purchase it yourself, with the intention of giving it to someone who is not a prohibited possessor, not taking money in exchange, it is not a straw purchase. It may have to go through an FFL if you're in different states, but that's just the transfer.

So how unfortunate was it that real "assault weapons" were so named ???

What was meant to refer to an infantry "assault", a armed attack on a defended position, was way too easily confused with the more familiar criminal assault concept.

And obviously our current masters of media have no intention to reveal the difference even when most of what are referred to as "assault weapons" don't have the automatic firing capability that provides the suppressive fire so necessary for an infantry assault.

I have calmly explained to him that I don't, I have civilian approved weapons (ARs, 2 AKs, pistols, e few other rifles and 2 shotties).Had the same conversation with him several times, he chooses to retain none of it.

To him an AR is assault rifle, an AK is a machine gun, and pistols are mil grade guns.

Universal background checks, however, are just a progressive sales term for the government keeping a complete record of all gun ownership - and with just a few more reasonable gun controls - confiscation of whatever guns the government decides to collect from that list.

Assumptions: 45 ACP, not a CCW piece.

1991 Series. It has GI sights. Full size. Around $750

Series 70. Also full size with GI sights. Better gun. Around $850. Had one as my personally owned backup piece when I was a Ranger back in the let 70's and early 80's. It became stepdad's bench gun (he was a Judge).

Series 70 Competition, Full size with nicer sights. Stainless Steel. Around $930.

Colt Commander. A bit smaller and lighter, nicer sights. Around $925

335 Earlier in the week, I acquired a gently used Colt Defender in 45 ACP. Finally got off my butt and took it to the range.

This thing is, of course, much smaller than my full size Series 80. It also has rubber wrap-around grips with finger grooves, so that adds to the different feel.

The beaver tail grip safety makes it sit in the web between thumb and hand differently.

Put a couple hundred rounds of target grade ball ammo downrange. No issues in function. Rear sight need drifted left a tad. Next trip.

I find I shoot it better one handed than using two. But, to be honest, I've not been to the range in a while and have some skill decay. All in the kill zone out to 20 yds, but not as good as normal.

All in all, very happy.

I grew up in the Bronx of the '50s and '60s. Back then and there there wasn't any administrative requirements for long guns. Pistols came under the Sullivan Law which meant that if you weren't a retired police officer, the owner of a cash business, or politically connected you pretty much had no chance to get a permit. In the early '70s, the City came up with a requirement to register all long guns.

Te fear is not a phobia.

"Where should I be looking for a colt 1911 45acp with a budget of 1k or less? "

1. Go to Cheaper Than Dirt
2. Pull down "Firearms", then "Handguns", then click "Semi-automatic"
... wait ...
3. On the left, click the caliber you want (.45 ACP)
... wait ...
4. On the right,in the "Sort By:" box,
select "Price Low to High"
... wait ...
(I think I'd pass on the Hi Point .45 ACP $167.64)

or

select "Price High to low"
... wait ...
(I think I'd pass on the Ed Brown Special Forces SRC $4,246.74

In either case, sorting by price shows what's on the market by manufacturer's price range .... and the overlap between manufacturers.

I think that this is a situation where you do indeed get what you pay for ... BUT paying too much gets you something that is not clearly better, and paying way too much ($4,246.74) gets you something that's a bit finnicky.

I think that $495 is the point where acceptable quality starts and maybe $900 is where the quality becomes less obvious.

Where you buy will affect your price. I'd look at the selection at CTD (look & read), then see what you can get at your local shop, then talk to your local shop, and buy there. A "tighter" gun (closer tolerances, less play in the action) is more likely to jam once dirt builds up. Talk to your local dealer. A $550-$650 CTD model at your local dealer might be a good starting point.
