On a happy note: Today is Nacho Day 606. It is 606 days that Hillary is nacho President!!! Actor James Woods no longer has an agent. Wish we had more like him in Hollywood. A short list. In no particular order. We told our children that any child could grow up to be President. And then we made it come true. We had car shows, boat shows, beauty shows and dog shows. We ran robots on the surface of Mars by remote control. Our women came from all over the world in all shapes and sizes and hues and scents. We actually believed that all men are created equal and tried to make it come true. Everybody liked our movies and loved our television shows. We tried to educate everybody, whether they wanted it or not. Sometimes we succeeded. We did Levis. We held the torch high and hundreds of millions came. No matter what the cost. We saved Europe twice and liberated it once.................. July 7, 1940, Born on this day, Richard Starkey, ( Ringo Starr, ) drums, vocals, Rory Storm, The Beatles. He sang lead vocals on one track on most Beatles albums, (The Beatles scored 21 US No.1 & 17 UK No.1 singles). Solo (1974 US No.1 & UK No.4 single 'You're Sixteen' plus 9 other US Top 40 hits). Ringo Starr and his all Star Band, (featuring; Howard Jones, Ian Hunter, Peter Frampton, Greg Lake). via thisdayinmusic.com July 7, 1980, Led Zeppelin played their last-ever concert with drummer John Bonham when they appeared at Eissporthalle, West Berlin at the end of a European tour. The set included: 'Black Dog', 'The Rain Song', 'Hot Dog', 'All My Love', 'Trampled Under Foot', 'Since I’ve Been Loving You', 'Kashmir', 'Stairway To Heaven' and 'Rock And Roll'. They finished the show with a 17-minute version of 'Whole Lotta Love' via thisdayinmusic.com First lady Melania Trump made an unannounced visit to wounded service members at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Maryland on Tuesday. Ringo was a fine/solid drummer and wrote the perfect parts for the songs he was working with. Nigel Olsen and Russ Kunkel are two others in that same vein. 20 plus years ago I told Gary I was thinking about taking lessons to improve my stickv work. He said "Don't. It'll ruin ya. On last night's ONT, 'round midnight, we started
discussing "The Worst Big Budget Movie Ever Made" (modern era). These were what we came up with. I doubt we missed any, but perhaps we COULD'VE overlooked one or two? alphabetical order: Alexander Empire of the Sun The English Patient Gable and Lombard In Harm's Way Kingdom of Heaven Pearl Harbor Remains of the Day They Shoot Horses, Don't They? Waterworld Aetius contributed about four of these, I nominated a couple. Posted by: strawdog at July 07, 2018 10:32 PM (Cssks) Good list. I would nix Remains of the Day (good movie, not really "big budget") and Empire of the Sun. I have never heard of "They Don't Shoot Horses...". Heaven's Gate was the classic example though many say it was much better than the reputation It did lose a lot of money though. The English Patient was the worst one everyone pretended to like, h/t Seinfeld but still true. Alexander was a horrible bust because the director wanted to tear the guy down and paid for it.. "Avatar" is not there because nobody nominated it heretofore. Consider it on the revised list, which I will update before I pass out... uh, I mean, fall asleep. Good catch, btw. The "modern era" means the last 50 years, i.e., since 1968. Mannix I don't know the difference between a film and a movie. Is anyone here familiar with the 2010 album Praise & Blame, by Tom Jones? A few weeks ago Sirius played the track from it, 'burning hell.' Posted by: strawdog at July 07, 2018 10:42 PM (Cssks) ++++++++++ Well, "lost their shirt" excludes several that already on the list. Avatar was a big-budget POS but it made money. So (eventually) did Waterworld (though it was a financial disaster initially). So I am assuming big-budget summer-movie types are off the list, like say, Transformers: Age of Extinction" It cost a fortune and sucks, but it didn't fail. Puddleglum, it did pretty much destroy Cimino's career.
As I understand it, he and his production teams were hyperscrutinized from then on, whenever he had the (rare) opportunity to direct any further films. The production companies also probably had absolute rights to fire him at any time for any reason. The only 'big' pic Cimino ever got to direct after Heaven's Gate, was The Sicilian, which from what I can tell has violently disagreeing reviews. Some people think it's incredible, others think it's trash. Posted by: qdpsteve at July 07, 2018 10:49 PM (eMKNe) 122

I would nominate the unalloyed shit salad that was "After Earth?" It was terrible and $150 million to produce. It made money, but cemented Shymalan has a laughing stock and he then went on to produce two sub-$10 million movies. His newest movie is budgeted at ~$50 million - chump change by modern standards. Posted by: Quint at July 07, 2018 10:43 PM (n13/j) I found this post so confusing. First, I thought you were talking about busts, as in a sculpture of a person's head & shoulders. But that didn't work either. Then, I couldn't figure out what poster Miss Sloane was. Was she someone new and what did she want? Finally, thru some hidden magic, it all came together. For anyone else confused...bust as in went bust (lost money) Damon as in actor lib Matt Damon (movie like Suburbicon) and Miss Sloane was also a movie, with an outspoken lib Jessica Chaistain, iirc. Which I think may have bombed. Phew. i'm exhausted. I usually only get that confused during a movie thread. Posted by: platypus, gg channel at July 07, 2018 10:59 PM (1lhwM) 158

Today an audience would find it 'full of cliches.' Yeah, well in 1967, making the bad guys the good guys, wasn't a cliche. Yet. Posted by: qdpsteve at July 07, 2018 11:00 PM (eMKNe) 161
Quint, it does make sense. But it's also kind of
funny; today the first minute and a half of a film, is watching all the up-front studio logos, both of those you recognize (20th Century Fox, Paramount) and these teeny tiny companies no one's ever heard of, or at least not yet. Posted by: qdpsteve at July 07, 2018 10:53 PM (eMKNe) Yeah it gets absurd. Everyone needs to have their own vanity production studio it seems. I think that "bad Robot" one set off the arms race. In Pearl Harbor, there was one actress who looked rather fetching in a 1941 swimsuit, but the CGI dogfights were dreadful. It was a WWII movie for video game addicts. "They Shoot Horses, Don't They?" was one of a whole string of depressing movies made in 1969-1970. Some others in that vein were "Midnight Cowboy", "Easy Rider", "Joe", "Five Easy Pieces", and I'm sure I'm forgetting some. They were all "Life sucks, you may as well just slit your wrists now." An interesting topic for a future Movie Thread would be the history of "love"/sex/porn scenes in films. Lying is embraced and rose-colored glasses are mandatory when it comes to reported earnings. Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at July 07, 2018 11:22 PM (hYcqw) 231

The joke about the weather-forecasting donkey is funny. But the ass as the symbol of the Democratic Party comes from Thomas Nast, who took it from AEsop's fable about the donkey that tried to hurl itself off a cliff. Which is a pretty accurate description of the Democratic Party in our day.

Posted by: Anon Y. Mous at July 07, 2018 11:16 PM (1F9jV) A lot of movies, like Shampoo, are huge deals bcz they are 'new', 'different', from what came before. That's why they don't hold up in later generations. I remember when I first saw "Saturday Night Fever", and was like, why is this such a big deal? Why did everyone slobber all over it? Well, at the time it was a new kind of scene (disco) and film-making, etc. But today? If it was made today? There is nothing extraordinary about it, IMO. That's why so many films/movies are misunderstood or not judged correctly. You can only understand if you judge them in context of their time period, and where movie making was cinematically at that time, and yadda, yadda, yadda. It's like people who are judging our Forefathers by today's mores. Or judging people from the 1800s or 1900s by today's standards. Context is so important with so many things. Without context, one's understanding and judgement is often wrong. Posted by: platypus, gg channel at July 07, 2018 11:32 PM (1lhwM) 269

In Pearl Harbor, there was one actress who looked rather fetching in a 1941 swimsuit, but the CGI dogfights were dreadful. It was a WWII movie for video game addicts.
We talked about this sometime recently. In the 60s and even early 70s there was still leftover kit from WWII that worked, so they made the movies with real planes. And now for something completely different: the Thai cave thing. It's hard to tell exactly, but it seems like the Thais are going to take the Elon Musk solution, which sounds ingenious. They're taking a part of a rocket ship and turning it into basically a rugged air bladder to put the kids in. The stories say "submarine" but it's not rigid. They're taking the liquid oxygen bladders from a Space X rocket, attaching handles and nozzles for feeding in more O2. So the kids don't have to swim. Two divers will have fore and aft of this device and drag them through. This cave cannot be all that deep. Why not set up a drilling rig over the chamber where the kids are trapped, and drill a 12" pilot hole, and follow it up with an 18 hole opener? Should take only a matter of hours. Then lower a bosun's chair, and hoist the little bastards out, one by one.
Limited information, but...I think they've been boring test holes and haven't come close to the chamber yet. No good surface reference mapping of the cave. One of the other things Musk is supposedly doing is sending over stuff from his tunneling company like really good ground penetrating radar, but it looks like the rains are coming and the Thais are determined to do something now. The Chilean miners got rescued by drilling (by a Pennyslvania company!) but that took 69 days. Posted by: Bandersnatch at July 07, 2018 11:45 PM (fuK7c) 300
So this afternoon after mowing the lawn, I swept my driveway and sidewalk. At one point I saw a group of people walking on the sidewalk towards me.
I moved the trash can off the sidewalk and stood aside to let them pass. They were two women about 25-30 and two little girls about 4-5. The women were covered in tattoos. The blonde was quite attractive; the brunette less so, but still not bad. As they walked past they were talking to each other. They didn't so much as glance in my direction or acknowledge my presence in any way. Posted by: rickl at July 07, 2018 11:46 PM (sdi6R) 301

Anyway, I remember allowing myself to be hypnotized by the stupid 'love story' the movie was pushing with Rose and Jack, rooting for them, rooting against Billy Zane's character, etc. But years later, watching it again not so emotionally charged from the breakup and a lot less naive, all I saw was the idiocy of Rose thinking she was a "slave" to her rich background and the realization that Billy Zane's character had every right to be completely pissed off at her, as she was floozing around on him with some boyish-looking schmuck. In some cases, no .gov agency *anywhere* has the people, expertise or industrial capacity to deal with the disaster. You need the best people, and the best people usually work in industry. He was reckless. Fine with your own life, not with other people's kids. One guy has already died. Maybe I'll read something and have to eat my words, and feel bad about being harsh. I have a bullet-proof plan for dealing with caves that you can't simply walk into, and out of. Don't go in there.
When I was 12 or so, a good friend died in a cave-in. I've never forgotten. I've had a few instances of waking up with such claustrophobia that I've had to go outside in the middle of the night to get right again. When I was in my 30's, a good friend died by entrapment/drowning in a kayak while paddling a pretty challenging river. I was there when his wife was given the news. I don't kayak whitewater rivers. I figured that. It didn't make sense that the kids would be taking this path that their instructor had taken so many times before (=successfully) and now, suddenly, there's this crisis. Those are all good choices. One universally panned
movie that I liked was "The Razor's edge". It was basically Bill Murray's first attempt at a drama. It was not a "great film" but asked some good questions and the story was different. Better than some generic retread stories these days. Posted by: Quint at July 07, 2018 11:14 PM (n13/j) I am not positive on this, but I think this was a remake of a movie made 2 times before, from a book by the same name. I coulda googled first, but I went with guessing and being wrong. Which I probably am. Not sure the previous movies went by the same name. Posted by: platypus, gg channel at July 07, 2018 11:39 PM (1lhwM) Yeah, I don't google on issues like this. It kills the point of conversation imo. Chat now, Google later. I do recall that the movie was made before. And I did not know it was based on a book, Somerset Maugham. The movie drove me to buy the book. I guess I was just trying to say the movie was a risk and new to the 80's generation. They were certainly not playing with tried and true movie motifs. I am not saying it was a great movie. The acting was uneven and the story was not very tight. I do have a soft spot for comedians trying dramatic roles though. Another one I remember liking was Robin Williams in the Fisher King and of course Dead Poets Society. Posted by: Quint at July 08, 2018 12:15 AM (n13/j) 362

Currently watching "Night Will Fall" on Netflix. It's a documentary on the British experience liberating concentration camps. If I hadn't seen this stuff in grade school I'd be having nightmares.
Posted by: Farmer I saw a movie called "Rebel in the Rye" a few weeks ago. It was about J. D. Sallinger.. I had never known about his WWII experience. He was in it from the D Day invasion, fighting through Europe, right up to going into a concentration camp. He ended up being treated for shell shock. The movie then went into his becoming a successful author, and eventually a recluse. I would have been thrilled with a straight-up remake of "A Night to Remember", but the fictional love story was a plot device that allowed them to show every part of the ship from bow to stern. Not a bad idea, really. Posted by: rickl at July 08, 2018 12:07 AM That's a good point, actually. If you view it as an ode to the ship, the Titanic, I can appreciate the movie much more. Speaking of, the best documentary I have seen on the reason the Titanic sank is "Titanic's Final Mystery". They show it on Smithsonian Channel every now and then. Even though I saw it a year or two ago for the first time, I watch it every time I see that it is on. Goes through explaining how they couldn't see the iceberg in time, because of the false horizon created by the weather that night and the Labrador Current (cold water from the north). Fascinating documentary. After I saw it the first time, I stopped watching any other conspiracy theory show on the Titanic. Posted by: Clyde Shelton at July 08, 2018 12:17 AM (7A4qQ) 369

A lot of Thai men are monks for a couple of years around 18-20. It's not like a Christian monk who takes vows and commits his life to, it's more like the Mormon thing where you spend two years proselytizing. I am not sure what year it was but the original "Taking of Pelhman 123" was a really good movie. The great Robert Shaw starred in it. The remake was pointless in my opinion, but most remakes are. Even the Westerns during that time focused on anti heroes and a dystopian world. Back when Westerns were part of the American tableau, they would often reflect the societal views of their day. For example, there were a slew of anti communist themed Westerns during the 50s, and then later the anti-hero ones of the late 60's and early 70s. . Too bad today they don't make westerns, and even if they do make them, they are usually bad. Posted by: Quint at July 08, 2018 12:47 AM (n13/j) 422

Been quite a while but I don't remember Empire of the Sun being so bad.
But I have a ravenous apetite and forgiving standards for movies about actual history, and the setting of that movie, IIRC, was a fascinating and little known or explored one - expat internees in Japanese-occupied China. One day at a place I volunteer a guy came in who as a small kid was in a family interned in Manila, at one of the Catholic girls' schools, during the war. He had been the head of the association of internees and their descendants at one time. Also worked with someone who as a small child was part of a family of Russian White emigres, living in Harbin, when Japan occupied Manchuria. The opening scene (?) of The Last Emperor, the motorcade to which attendance was "encouraged" by charming young Japanese soldiers banging on doors with their rifles? He was there, said his whole family dressed up in Sunday best and went to take their place along the route. I love that s**t, so movies that deal with it always get at least a peek (unlike almost any others, any more). Posted by: rhomboid at July 08, 2018 12:51 AM (QDnY+) 426

I learned my lesson about caves at a ranch in West Texas, had a rather shallow one we had found some indian artifacts in and near visiting previously. I had gone down into it, about a couple hundred yards, but it was winter then and cold. Visited it in summer, and at the rather large entrance, there was a bunch of broken rock on the floor, stuff that had fallen from the ceiling. Walked in, heard something like dry leaves rustling, an odd noise. A pal a few yards behind me with a better vantage point yelled "get back here fast!!!" So I did. Looked back and saw, seriously, an 8 foot long diamondback with a body as big around as my upper arm gliding across the floor.
That cured me of any desire to go exploring caves. Posted by: Tom Servo at July 08, 2018 12:59 AM (V2Yro) 435

I loved Catcher so much in high school that I went and read everything else that Salinger had ever written, then went to the Reader's Guide to Periodic Literature and thence to the microfiche (that's how old I am) to find what had only been published in magazines.
I never did find "The Inverted Forest", but I found everything else. When my high school kid read Catcher I picked it up again and found that it didn't hold up for me. When I was in high school I knew nothing of the class system underlying Holden's existence, nor of NYC, it was just a bold adventure that would have terrified me because my parents surely would have murdered me. I'd say it doesn't hold up, but I don't regret my Salinger obsession from back then. Reading everything made me feel better. Posted by: Bandersnatch at July 08, 2018 01:02 AM (fuK7c) 439

Uummm.,...,..are you fcuking kidding me here?
No. I'll elaborate. I read Huck Finn in high school and resented having to read it because I thought it was a children's book and I was in the smart kids English class. I skimmed it enough to write a paper. But I remember what my teacher said about it. He was better, and a more lasting influence on my thinking, than any college professor I ever had. Reading it as an adult I loved it. I got the politics (he's anti-monarchy, anti-government, combine it with Connecticut Yankee and you basically have a libertarian blueprint). The turning point where Huck decides to go to Hell to support his friend Jim, and the fact that he really believes in literal Hell so it's a big deal. Obviously the point of the book is anti-racism so it's laughable that lefties keep trying to get the book banned for the N word. (Btw, Twain never refers to Jim as N__ Jim, that phrase is from a later critic. Neither the narrator nor Huck call Jim a N__, only other characters do). Reading it in my 40s or 50s changed everything. Posted by: Bandersnatch at July 08, 2018 01:22 AM (fuK7c) 461

With the cooling ponds for power plants creating open water on ponds and lakes year-round, they don't need to migrate as much. You could make a good case for culling the resident flocks, as they might represent a weakening of the migratory instinct, which would not serve the species well if the advance (or end, heh) of technology rendered the power plant cooling ponds obsolete. one thing that i hated about "English" classes in college, and that i never really understood.
it was always "what was the author *really* trying to say?" read his Fing words you pompous idiot: he meant what he said. this "metaphor" BS is just that. if he had a deeper meaning, he would have written a philosophy paper, not a novel. he's just telling a story. fing ruined reading the "great " literature for me, because instead of being enjoyable, i was supposed to make up shit that agreed with whatever delusions my professor had about the "deeper" meanings. Posted by: redc1c4 at July 08, 2018 02:11 AM (IuPpm) This really does describe English departments so well. I remember a critique of the aforementioned Huck Finn cenetered around ignoring the last part of the book entirely out of a desire to develop a heroic character arc for Huck. The last section has Huck mostly regressing back to the mean, he meets up with Tom again and falls right back into his old habits of following Tom around and acting as an accomplice to his antics. The book itself undercuts the point they want to make about Huck "evolving" to be better than the violent Southern riffraff when he just returns to the same boy he was once reaching a familiar setting again. So even the story itself must be ignored in favor of the narrative as interpreted by English majors. Posted by: Sjg at July 08, 2018 02:25 AM (gDSJf) 506
Oh, and I don't know what the justification for Tom Sawyer is. He's a dick.

I'm so fuckin' sad right now. My Dad doesn't understand a One Step Process for feeding the dogs.
They don't trust the feeding process because he puts pills in their bowls. They both smell the medicine and won't eat. I had to wash out their bowls and feed them when I should be sound asleep. --He can't feed the dogs anymore. He wets their food for some reason and I can't get him to understand that they don't eat it that way. They never did. I'm angry that I'm awake, but I kept my patience. Thank God for that.
