People that insist on always being called doctor are fundamentally anti-American. They are attempting to use their doctorate as a title of nobility and enforce the use of that title to distinguish themselves from the "commoners".

Read a book on organizational anecdotes written by a career organizational consultant. There was some pretty hilarious stuff in that book.
Like an R&D team of researchers with PhDs constantly referred to each other as "doctor" and "Dr.". They had one MD in R&D--this guy, they *refused* to call "Dr.".

Domestic livestock mostly has a pretty good life, till the bolt to the head ends things quickly. The idea that "wild and free" animals have any notion of liberty is mostly projection. Many starve or end up tortured by some "fellow wild and free" predator that eats them alive. And fights over territory are constant.
Animals don't all just get along like in some fairy tale, especially when hungry. It is like the "noble savage" that Columbus found in the Indies (?), where they were so noble and advanced, they kept fellow citizens in cages and ate them like other livestock. (iirc)
Western Civilization is not the norm ... and wild animals are working to destroy it.

A professor teaching a course is referred to as "doctor" to distinguish him from those with lesser degrees. I also don't know of any J.D. normally making this demand either. As I said, it could only take place in a professional setting where these distinctions matter--and usually then it's in the printed program only.

Doctors are people with medical degrees who have passed their boards, not goofy academics with degrees in Victorian porn or womyns' studies. A real Ph.D. doesn't require mere knowledge but must include original contributions to the field. The dissertation is supposed to be a piece of actual research.
Now ... this basic requirement has been watered down for many STEM Ph.D.s and is totally laughable for whole fields that have no part being recognized by academia, to begin with, but the basic idea of a Ph.D. is that the person is a researcher, not just a knowledgeable practitioner.
I'm not sure what so many of you have against Ph.D.s. Just because there are lots of fake Ph.D.s out there doesn't take away from the importance of real Ph.D.s, who are traditionally called "Doctor" in formal settings.

I have a sister in law who is a PhD in psychology, and does not correct people (in non-professional situations) referring to her as a psychiatrist. It really bugs me.
I have a JD, and think it is absurd that people need to go by a title in any non-professional setting ever.

Anyone who has more than one degree at each level is a loser. People who get multiple masters degrees are junior losers. People who get multiple PhDs are varsity losers.
You only need (if there is a need) one degree. You can develop expertise in other fields without having to go get a degree in them.
I knew people who pursued multiple graduate degrees ... because they had nothing better to do. It's a totally useless pursuit.

Some of those designations don't have anything to do with college. Like, for example, "CHT" (certified hypnotherapist). You can get certified on the internet after taking a few online classes.
I know a college-dropout, ex-failed realtor who has been bankrupt several times who uses that one on her business cards.

It is not a marker for high intelligence.
I worked for 22 years at a university. Trust me on this one. The really intelligent Ph.Ds almost always insisted on being called by their first names.
The stupid ones insisted on being called "Doctor."
I therefore conclude that our little Fern is . . . not that bright.

Reminds me of the time I was grading some p-chem lab reports on effusion of napthalene where the purpose was to determine the mean free path of the napthalene molecule in a vacuum.
One of the students came up with an answer that was, ahem, substantially larger than the accepted one. I did some unit conversions, marked it wrong, and pointed out to the student that the answer given was larger than the known diameter of the universe. Perhaps another go at the calculation was in order?

I was working on a genetics paper, one friend was working on a paper for a French history class, and another one was working on some accounting problems. A girl who was an education major came up, flounced down with us at the table, and started whining, "Y'all, I was trying to make a sauce in Home Ec today and I failed. White sauces are SOOO hard! You just have no idea how difficult my classes are!"
We just looked at each other and stared at her. Ignore your friend with the fancy paper. She knows rather little about the difficult things in academics, and probably does a crappy job teaching the kids in her care. Pity them.

The Education Department is the worst department at every university that has one. The numbers bear out how bad the situation is - Graduate Education students have the worst test scores of anyone. They score even lower on the GRE math sections than the friggin English grads! They score even lower than the Sociology idiots! They are, by far, the worst.
And, yes. That does explain a lot about the sorry state of our education system.

Sadly, if you don't do undergrad education programs, you have to take a Master's Degree in Ed in order to get certification. Doesn't matter if you have undergrad or grad degrees in other subjects. And the freaking cost of the MEd is off putting.
Once teachers with BEd's start teaching, schools will pay for them to get a Master's Degree, so they can get federal funds for administration- the school pays for the Masters, and gets that amount for the school budget. It's an interesting racket.

I think I would agree with the dissent on this one. The question isn't about the police tracking someone for years and years but about their access to historic GPS data. The problem is not with the police, in this case, though, but with the service providers who should demand warrants from the police before releasing the data. It is wrong to demand that the police must have warrants for this data to start. The data is property of the providers and it is their responsibility to handle it properly.
People should know which providers will puke up everything for any request (from cops or others) and which will actually safeguard their data. That would make a big difference in many peoples' decision of which providers to use.

I'm not sure if this is in this SC case but police use stingray devices to trick your phone into connecting to it instead of a legit cell tower and then track you and all of your communications through that. Without a warrant.

If the government wants to track people, they can get a warrant. After what we've seen with Trump and the Deep State, why on Earth would you want to give law enforcement a black check?
Also, you can make these arguments with your internet provider, why not let law enforcement look at all your browsing activity without a warrant?

I view the two titles as interchangeable in the teaching context.
"Doctor" is easier to say than "Professor," particularly when the person's surname is polysyllabic.

My family is full of medical doctors, phds, lawyer/jd. We all agree that you should only go by "dr" if you finished medical school.
As a lawyer myself, I know that half my fellow lawyers only went to law school because they were too lazy and/or dumb for med school.

For a long time, scholars of Kipling's ballad-style poems presumed that he was aping classical poesy, using English in Latin or Greek forms the way that Edgar Poe did. They were highly irregular meter and rhyme schemes, but they did repeat. Within the purview of poems that actually had meter and rhyme, they were incredibly creative.
Then along came a "Victorian cultural historian," and discovered that Kipling frequented the music halls, and used the meter of the pop tunes that cycled through there as the basis for new rhyme schemes. It changed the understanding of Kipling's writing process, big time.
Now, being good conservatives -- you DO like Kipling, don't you?Are you going to say that the study of that work was a waste of skin and oxygen?

My boss's boss fixates on crapping on the peons and kissing up to those with advanced degrees. She's been crapping on me since I started this job, running the plans room, the lowest of the low here. I took the job because of the bene's and don't really care about the work, which is minimal.
Then a couple of weeks ago she found out (who knows how?) that I have a M.Arch. and have worked as an architect for 30 years (which is remarkable, as I'm only 20 years old). Her entire attitude changed. I suppose she figured out I'm hip to her crappy bullshit about being an engineer. She works in admin, on contracting, so not much of engineer at that.
People who are hooked on this crap tend to be insecure and foolish, when it comes down to it.

I once got pulled over for a registration issue (technically my fault) when I hadn't done anything wrong. No rolling stop, lane change, tried to get through a yellow. I just got pulled over.
It turned out that the cops were just sitting there running plate numbers. (They do that with bots now). I thought that a search of my records was a search and therefor a 4th Am violation, so I set out to fight it in court.
Court said $400 and it will go away. I said F you I want a trial. Court said $200 and it will go away. I said the same. Court said it can go away for free.
Shortening the story, we did four or so rounds of this and the prosecuter said "nol pross".
I said, "your honor, I'm not a lawyer, but I'm doing this to challenge the law and I believe that if there's no case I have no standing".
His honor said "there is no case".

Once teachers with BEd's start teaching, schools will pay for them to get a Master's Degree, so they can get federal funds for administration- the school pays for the Masters, and gets that amount for the school budget. It's an interesting racket.

That's insane! I had a BA and an MA before I got my teaching certificate in '98. The whole point of the program at Wayne State University was to assist competent people in different fields to become teachers. My school district never paid a dime for any college classes and it ws pretty stingy regarding continuing education workshops if they took place during school hours!
I actually had a funny experience with a PhD from India. We were at a wedding reception and she wanted to be addressed as Dr and her first name. An older white gentleman informed her that he had a doctorate in chemistry and his wife (coming shortly) was a retired pediatrician. You could see her face change, like she didn't know what to say. Then she looked irritated because he said, "You needn't bother calling us doctor."
And my friend and I laughed and one of us (I forget who) made the comment that it would have been awkward because he and I both have masters degrees and if they insisted on titles... The PhD woman did NOT like the joke.

Cops can informally ask for all sorts of things. They can ask to search your house without a warrant. You have the right to tell them "No". They can ask you to answer questions. You have the right to tell them "No" - and that stupid Miranda ruling is insane. It's the person's responsibility to know his rights.

In the worst case it is to Congress to write a law requiring providers to provide an opt out for customers to safeguard their GPS data. In the worst case. But it isn't a judicial thing. Not to my mind, it's not.
